It has been another busy month.

Congratulations to Julian Lugg and his hard working committee for a great SA JAG Day. We had over 100 Jaguars/Daimlers on show with plenty of public coming through. Thank you to Rick Luff for commentary on the day and our members with Special Interest vehicles. The parade also celebrated the anniversary of the XJC and the XJS. Thanks also to all those who donated food to the Salvation Army.

The following weekend we had 20 Jaguars on display Saturday and Sunday at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. It was an early start with cars meeting at 7.45am and staying until 5. There was so much activity with races every 15 minutes that the days went quite quickly. There were historic touring cars, sports cars, classic Motorcycles, Porsche and the highly anticipated Formula 1. When they hit the track everyone flocked to the fence. I am sure this event will be even better next year.

Don’t forget about the “Take your tops off” Breast Cancer Fund Raiser at Birdwood Motor Museum this Saturday (31st October). It is not too late to enter or just come along on the day as a spectator. It is a very worthy cause.

The following Sunday, 8th November is our Club run to McLaren Vale. We are meeting at the Victoria Hotel at 9.50am, departing at 10 to Scarpantoni Estate McLaren Flat for wine tasting with Michael Scarpantoni. If wine tasting is not to your liking you could visit the Almond Train. We are then heading to Oxenberry Farm Winery/Café for lunch (approx. 12.15) We will be parking our Jaguars on the lawn by the Café. Please let me know if you will be attending.

Bring on the Spring weather. Hope to see you at the November meeting and look forward to hearing about the XJC Muster in Echuca.

We received $60 in cash, including a gift

voucher and over 2000 food items. The

variety of these items gives my clients and

the clients of our other programs a great

It has been suggested that a National Rally 50th anniversary

book be released in 2019. ACJC is considering this proposal and feedback on people’s recollections and highlights of the rallies would be appreciated. The book, if published, must be interesting and not merely a collection of facts and figures.

The future direction of ACJC was discussed, with an emphasis on possible joint ventures/activities (refer to the JDCSA submission). This was the beginning of on-going dialogue and it is apparent that member clubs should be encouraged to support proposed joint activities with a working proposal.

Other matters discussed included trophy rationalisation for National Rallies, updating the National Rally Manual and treasurer’s report and associated financial matters.

MSCA: Barry Kitts advised that the program is finished for the year.

The Motor Sport Festival offered four runs of the circuit at $25 for one day, $ 40 for two days. Entry to Pebble Beach event USA cost $350.

Regalia: Dave Bicknell looks forward to promoting Club products at Jag Day.

January & February are still ‘clean’, there must be something on! Register secretaries please contribute.

Guest Speaker: Lin Goed from the Salvation Army introduced her assistants Katey & Megan from the Ingle Farm facility which provides temporary accommodation for other-wise homeless people.

She mentioned the recent $46,000 funding cut by the Government and how valuable our Cats & Cans project is for their Outreach Programme.

They like to leave ‘Making Memories ‘the disadvantaged - what about a ride in a Jaguar?

Police clearances are required for persons helping (volunteers)

General Business:

Phil Prior mentioned the XJC models have 35 entries for the Echuca Run 17-18 October.

Peter Holland advised that Scott Adamson, who is restoring a Triumph TR7 & was given $1000 grant from the Shannons Foundtion 18 months ago has been working diligently to get the car back on the road.Congratulations for his good work.

President’s Report: Di reminded members re Jag Day next Sunday noting that good weather is forecast. Cats & Cans will be in place again & Di welcomed this evening’s Guest Speaker from the Salvos.

Jag Day Organising Committee chairman Julian Lugg will report later.

Other Events coming up include the Adelaide Motor Sport Show & the All-Register Club Run to Scarpantoni Winery at Mc:Laren Vale on Sunday 8

th November, followed by lunch

at Oxenberry Farm/Cafe.

Vice President’s Report: Julian reported that everything is in place for a great event & we are looking for a good roll-up. The Car-boot Sale has been moved to the back oval and the main entrance gate marshals will need to extra vigilant. Register secretaries are to supervise Register parking as per the signs that will be in place.

There are two extra toilets conveniently located.

Bob Charman is arranging the 40yr. anniversary parade for XJC & XJS vehicles.

Philip Prior advised that the Dive Club will be have a stand for sandwiches & cakes to supplement the usual BBQ. Vehicles must stay in place until 3.00pm.

‘Oil dripping cars’ should use trays, no pegs into the lawn.

Treasurer: Tim White advised every thing was in order.

ACJC: Peter Holland gave a report on the ACJC Meeting held on 9 August 2015, highlighting the following points:

JLRA provided a report on current status of new Jaguars in Australia, with the imminent release of the new XE being a highlight. The new F-Pace is scheduled for release in 2016

Planning for the National Rally 2016, hosted by the JDCQ is well advanced and will be held in the Caloundra area of the Sunshine Coast. Full registration details will be released shortly. This will be the first Rally not to hold a concours, as agreed by the clubs.

The 2017 Rally will be hosted by jointly by the JDCA and JDCHR in the Port Stephens area, with planning well under way. As an aside Peter noted that JDCSA is due to host a rally in 2018 and now is the time to start planning.

Global Unveiling of Jaguar Land Rover Bond Cars 15 September 2015 Jaguar Land Rover celebrated its vehicles appearing in the new Bond adventure,

SPECTRE. Cars, including the Jaguar C-X75, Range Rover Sport SVR and the iconic

Land Rover Defender, stole the show as they were unveiled in public for the first time at

the palatial Thurn und Taxis in Frankfurt.

Naomie Harris (Moneypenny) and David Bautista (Hinx) were guests of honour at the

glamorous event showcasing special stunt vehicles used in the latest instalment of the

James Bond series. Guests were entertained by British singer and musician John

Newman, who performed a number of top ten hits from his album.

SPECTRE, the 24th James Bond film, from Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-

Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, sees the Jaguar C-X75 drive

through the moonlit streets of Rome in one of the movie's most iconic high speed chase

scenes. Driven by Hinx, played by David Bautista, the C-X75 supercar, named the most

advanced Jaguar ever created, was provided by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle

Operations (SVO) in collaboration with development partner Williams Advanced

Engineering headquarters in Oxfordshire, England.

Mintaro Run on 13 September 2015. Rob Smith and Robin and Deidre Ide attended the run and said they were made very welcome. A good day.

Jag Day on 11 October 2015. 6 cars from our register attended. Well organised, successful day.

COMING EVENTS;

Border Run on 29 October 2015. Emails have been sent out to all those attending regarding the weekend events. Meet at 10 am at Tailem Bend for everyone to set off together. Bill and Julie Barker have kindly offered their home for anyone wishing to extend their visit to Victoria. It is recommended that all members attending the Border Run advise Bill and Julie of their intentions of either staying or returning to Adelaide immediately after the border run.

Club Christmas Party on 1 December 2015 at 6pm at the Police Club. Our register is to provide the entertainment and Bob Magor, the bush poet and entertainer, has been booked for the event.

All Steamed Up, Mannum 19-20 November 2016. Although this is a long way off, members are reminded that if they wish to stay for the weekend they need to book accommodation now.

Register Christmas party at Springton on 6 December 2015. The format will be the same as in previous years. Julian will be organising the meat for the barbecue and Robin will arrange salads in consultation with Moira. Sweets are still being worked out. An email will be sent to members so that we can establish numbers for this event.

Robin mentioned the tribute in the Classic Marque to Vic Leipus, a long standing member of our club.

Congratulations were given to Sue Harrison on becoming Events Secretary.

RAY AND VERNE DAWKINS It is with great sadness that members of our club learnt of the passing of long standing members Ray and Verne Dawkins. They joined the club in 1975 and have maintained continuous membership from that time. They were active members for many years and regularly supported Club Events and General Meetings. Their quiet demeanour and quick sense of humour endeared them to fellow members. After retirement their attendance lessened, but their enthusiasm for the Marque and the Club never waned.

Ray and Verne have owned numerous Jaguars over the years, but perhaps the one that provided the most fun was his XK120 Drophead Coupe. It was a birthday present from Verne to Ray. They drove it to many events, but a particular drive was always very special to Ray. Each Sunday morning he would take it out to buy the Sunday paper. The only problem, the nearest newsagent was located in Hahndorf! Nothing available closer to home in Adelaide, so it seems! The following quote from the Advertiser notice of their passing best describes Ray and Verne’s background:

“Recently retired Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and of an Accountancy Practice formerly of Epworth Building and also Victor Harbour, Raymond was a returned WW2 soldier who served in the 108th Tank Battalion. Both Raymond and Verne were active members of the Naval, Military and Air Force Club of South Australia, The sporting Car Club of SA and the Jaguar Driver’s Club of SA”.

It is true to say Ray and Verne will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Our condolences go out to their families.

Jaguar SS 100 We all know and admire Tony’s SS100 Jaguar seen so regularly at club outings.

The car is a 1939, 3.5 litre which was one of the last produced before WWII.

Between 1936 and 1940 a total of 309 SS100s were built and all were two seater roadsters..

During this period 191 were built with 2.5 litre engines and from 1938 to 1940 there were also 118 with 3.5 litre engines.

Tony’s SS100 left the Jaguar factory for Australia on 15 February 1939 and it’s first owner was Dr Walter Pye of Scone, NSW who drove it on his honeymoon before storing it on blocks during WWII.

The car had six more short term owners before Tony, aged 21, bought the car in 1958 and now he is nearly 80 and has owned it for 58 years.

On his travels to find other SS100s in the eastern

states, Tony met Dr Pye in Sydney in 1962 and he corresponded with him until his passing in 1994 aged 88.

When road tested in 1938 the 3.5 litre achieved 101 mph which is testament to the 100 in the name SS100.

There are nine 3.5 litre and six 2.5 litre Jaguar SS100 originals in Australia together with 11 replicas of which 4 are in South Australia.

Tony’s ownership of his 76 year old car is the longest of any SS100 in Australia and possibly the world and he has been a member of the JDCSA for more than 30 years.

Before continuing this story, I must point out that we used the Mark 2 for many holidays, there were at least 2 trips every year, one to wherever the National Rally was being held & the other to the Snowy’s & most of them were uneventful & the Mark 2 served us very well, so I would hate to create an image of the “Griswald’s in a Jag” & that whenever we went on a trip there was a disaster.

Also, I have selected the most memorable incidents & have attached some humour to them; it’s easy to see the humorous aspect now although at the time it was hard to see the funny side, I’m sure that that can apply to many of us even now.

And so the saga continues.

After returning home from our honeymoon the next task was to find the Mark 2 as it had not arrived back in Adelaide from Cooma. This took many frantic phone calls over several days until it was found in a freight depot in Sydney (it was meant to have been sent to Melbourne)

Eventually the car was returned to us in Adelaide minus its radio & bonnet leaper but had acquired some additional holes through the sills courtesy of a forklift slightly missing its mark, never mind we had our girl back & looking on the bright side I was able to use the fork lift holes to check for rust in the sills!!!!

I will never forget the look on Val’s face when we went into Bryson Industries to order some minor things such as 6 pistons & con rods, 12 valves, main, big end & camshaft bearings along with the gasket sets, by now the recent vows of “for better or for worse” were beginning to have a meaning to Val, especially if you had also taken a Jag as part of the marriage package.

Needless to say that we did not travel back to the Snowys in 1971 due to a rather acute shortage of funds, however we did go back in 1972 & this began our regular trips to this part of Australia.

We again travelled through the “back way” being the Alpine Way & stayed in Cooma at the same time as Mercedes were launching a new range of cars in Berridale at the Berridale Country Club.

We passed them twice a day as we travelled from Cooma to Thredbo & returned, to a point where we would wave to each other every time that we passed, but this came to an abrupt end when some of the Mercs got stuck in the snow & I was only too happy to pull them out with the Mark 2, a feat that was not appreciated by the Mercedes people, especially when I started taking photos.

We used the Mark 2 right up to 1981 when it started to become a bit small with the twins rapidly growing, back then we took our own luggage for a week plus 3 or 4 sets of skis, boots, ski clothing & many a traveller was bemused in a motel carpark when watching the morning ritual of stuffing everything into the boot then having the kids sit on the boot as Val & I would rock the Mark 2 up & down until the boot would shut.

As mentioned many of the trips were quite uneventful, but 1977 was a trip that will live in my memory for some time because this year the National Rally was in Canberra during the Queen’s Birthday weekend, which coincided with the official start of the skiing season, so we decided to combine staying at Thredbo before travelling on to the rally.

By now the club had started & we were mixing with many

great members & there was an incredible range of cars & what developed was a bit of a “pecking order” in what you drove, until then I had been happy with the little 2.4.

But now someone always had a Mark 2 that looked nicer or went faster than yours (especially in our early motorkhanas & so the little 2.4 acquired a set of chrome wire wheels, then a 3.54 limited slip diff (really economical with a 2.4) & finally a 3.8 triple carb engine with an all synchromesh overdrive gearbox.

It was in this car that we travelled to Thredbo in 1977, now we all know that it rarely snows in June even if the skiing season starts in June, but this year it dumped down.

We had been held up that day due to one of the carby’s starving for fuel (even a 2.4 went better than a 4 cylinder 3.8) & so we were driving through the Alpine Way at night down a long hill to a place called Leather Barrel Creek & at the bottom is a right hand turn with a one way wooden bridge. Val woke up to observe a bow wave of dry white snow either side of the Mark 2, so she suggested that I should slow down, but my reply of “we are in reverse gear with the handbrake on” kept her quite for some time (a case of, is the peace worth the stress).

We almost made the turn & when we arrived in Canberra there were comments at the rally that “I really should have fixed that big scratch before coming to a national rally”.

Only I knew the truth but at least I had removed the remnants of the bridge!

While staying at the Thredbo Alpine hotel there were some English journalist who really wanted everyone to know how important they were by talking in raised voices about how they were expecting their invitations to Charles & Dianna’s wedding soon & that they had arrived in Thredbo driving a new Rolls Royce!

Before we went to bed I went outside, lifted the bonnet of the Mark 2 & placed a rug over the engine & when I went inside one of the journalist in his finest British accent asked what I was doing, I explained that Jags did not like the cold weather so could be hard to start (especially with it snowing heavily), so he also decided to place a rather large rug over the Roll’s engine.

The next morning we were having breakfast but was attracted to a loud thumping sound outside, only to observe the Rolls leaping up & down in the carpark with vast amounts of rug coming from under the car, very closely followed by a lot of coolant (pays to leave a note on the dash like I did with words along the lines on “remove rug”) maybe I should have mentioned this to him, I stayed scarce for a while after this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It always pays to be aware of snow conditions & when in Jindabyne one year we were staying at the Lake Jindabyne Motel & heard that there was a lot of snow falling “up the hill” so I decided to undertake a trial fitting of the snow chains onto the Mark 2 before driving up for a day’s skiing, when one of the other holiday makers thought that I was “overdoing it” (his words).

But that day we did need the chains to get back down, although some twit in a 4wd tried to pass us & came unstuck, should have known better than to try & pass a Jag, even if it is up to its hubcaps in snow.

That night the guy staying at the motel caught up with me & told me how uncontrollable his car was with the chains fitted, he asked me if I would take his son down with us the next day if the conditions were as bad, & they were.

So he came up to me in the Smiggin Holes carpark the next day telling me how dangerous his car was & again asked me to take his son, I agreed but suggested that there must be something wrong with his chains so asked to look at his car.

What I found was a front wheel drive Alfa with the chains fitted to the rear wheels; he had copied exactly what I had done with the rear wheel drive Mark 2.

Of interest is that the Mark 2 was very sure footed with chains in the worst of conditions & except for having to remove the spats, the chains did not cause any damage to the inner guards.

Now over all the years that I have been going over there I have only lost 3 days skiing due to consuming too much alcohol, but that night he was so grateful that the following day was one of them.

50 Shades of Grey

I bet this has got your attention, but it’s not what you think (unfortunately), our beautiful Mark 2 had suffered a variety of scratches & dents over the years, they were all duly repaired but no repair ever matched the original grey & although the Jag looked good from a distance she was beginning to display many different shades of grey when inspected up close.

It was to be our last trip to the snow in the Mark 2 so I wanted it to look nice, Val was quite aghast when she came home from work 3 days before we were due to leave to find the Mark 2 minus 4 doors, bonnet & boot & completely resprayed in one glorious light grey, the problem was that the paint was the new lead free acrylic & for some reason it would not dry. So I had to respray the whole car again & we got it back together by about 2am of the day that we left (6am).

That first day of travel was one of many complaints about the smell, but I was thoughtful in supplying them all with buckets & they had something to keep themselves occupied by screwing the door trims back on.

Much of this might sound silly now, but I am trying to recreate how things were back then, many of our long standing members (like the Hollands & many more) will tell you that this is how it was back then; we were all young, not much money & did whatever we could to keep our cars on the road as cheaply as possible. When a new member would join the club with a new XJ6 Series 1 or E Type we were in awe.

Actually it might be an idea for the future that some of the members, who joined the club in that first year gave a talk at the General Meeting about the various misadventures that we had.

Then upon our return from the snow in 1981 there was a phone call from a work mate to say “was I interested in what he described as an XJ6 Series 1 ½ for sale (that had a few issues) I had never seen a Series 1 1/2 before so went to have a look out of curiosity.

The XJ years were about to start.

The XJC story is widely known by now, and while the production was the lowest in numbers of any Jaguar model, the XJC has become an iconic, much desired and sought after Jaguar. Although built from 1975 to late 1977, it was not launched in Australia until 1976, and this launch took place at a Jaguar National Rally in Mildura, where the XJC and the XJS were unveiled to club members, media and the public alike.

It was early then in 2014, that a group of XJC owners decided we should hold a celebration to mark the anniversary of our lovely coupes. We, all members of our states Jaguar clubs are, Allen Williams and John Mann of Victoria, Phil Prior of South Australia and me, Phil Evans from New South Wales, began planning the event.

The Planning We decided that the event would run along the lines of a National Rally, with a welcome party, a dinner and a display day. Echuca was chosen as an easier location than Mildura for all those travelling long distances. It is also blessed with many natural attributes and charms, and is a thriving centre with Moama just across the river. There were many restaurants and accommodation options in the area for us to select from to cater for those attending.

So Echuca it was, and we selected a rally headquarters at The Port of Echuca Mercure Hotel. It seems tourism is the

life blood of many Australian towns these days, Echuca is no different and is a busy place, and we must say that the local community, council, tourism and business folk were most helpful with the organisation of the event.

Muster memorabilia was produced in the form of a great grille badge (which also became the event logo); along with caps and polo shirts to provide a lasting memory of the event. A beautiful 36 page souvenir booklet was also printed, which features the coupes attending, and we’re sure this will be treasured by all for many years. We may not see such a gathering again for some time.

From the outset, we received support that we could not have done without, from The Jaguar Magazine and all the Australian Jaguar clubs who publicised the event in magazines and on websites. Shannons were our major sponsor, and Andrew and Michelle of Temby Automotive, Eltham were marvellous in their support. Andrew and Michelle flew their Yak aerobatic plan to Echuca on the morning of the Sunday display day and made a couple of low level passes over us with a smoke trail billowing out the back!

Many owners and their coupes checked into The Mercure on the Friday and the carpark looked a great sight, with nearly 30 coupes being cleaned after their trips and being inspected by all and sundry. I think we were all in wonderland!

Coupes at the Mercure Coupes came from each state, and we thank you all for your efforts and kilometres travelled. One was driven over from Western Australia, not without incident, but Juliette and Mark finally arrived on the Saturday morning, and had taken the ‘adventure’ in their stride and were very cheery and happy with it all. Great attitudes!

Friday welcome party, a lovely evening and setting. Canapés were served and cold refreshments were enjoyed after a hot day.

We were extremely fortunate to have Howard and Sue Snow join us also. Both spent their working lives with Jaguar Cars, Coventry, and are now retired and resident in Australia. It was by great chance that they were on a touring holiday and would be in Echuca when the event was taking place.

Howard readily agreed to speak to our gathering about their Jaguar lives, and he well remembers the difficult development process the XJC went through before it was released to the public.

At about the time that the car was conceived, he was Personal Assistant to Lofty England during his period as Chairman of Jaguar following Sir William's retirement. His talk was very well received and much appreciated by all.

Saturday dawned fine and warm again and many availed themselves of the optional activities that were planned. Some went to The National Holden Museum, and many

took the chance for a lunch time cruise on the paddle steamer, “EMMYLOU”. This was a wonderful

experience, cruising on the mighty Murray River, with all its sights and activities, and one of the highlights for many of us this weekend.

Back in The Mercure carpark, which always seemed to be a hive of coupe activity – there were cars being cleaned (again!), stories and tales swapped. We got busy setting up for the Saturday evening dinner – in a nice room at The Mercure into which Phil Prior carefully drove his Daimler Sovereign coupe. It looked magnificent and a very nice addition to the evening’s atmosphere.

Again, 80 people enjoyed a plentiful buffet dinner, and the evening ran smoothly with the assistance of a local identity, Ross Veale who was our MC. Ross is another example of a helpful local who would not take any payment for his time, but in return he asked that we might donate some money to Echuca Regional Health for their new hospital. Some excess funds were handed to the mayor and the hospital CEO at the Sunday display day awards.

We were once again fortunate to have another Jaguar identity, Bill Hemming and his wife Deb, join us for the Saturday dinner. Bill’s career included working for Jaguar in Australia and Europe and he actually drove the launch XJS to Mildura in 1976 and drove the XJC back to Sydney. While he preferred the XJS at the time, he came to love the XJC and purchased a 4.2 model, fitted it with a V12 engine and towed his race cars with it.

Bill is still an active racer, and at one time owned Elfin Sports Cars and presently owns the Elfin Heritage

Museum in Melbourne. A true character and his talk was very well received and appreciated by all. The weekend has seen him come to regret having sold his XJC!

The evening flew by and was over before we knew, but not before the presentation of some certificates to those who have been helpful to us and who made the evening the success it was.

I was presented with a lovely print of my XJC by my fellow hard working organisers, for which I will always be most appreciative. It was a wonderful gesture by them, thank you again.

XJC Display Day Sunday morning dawned fine (the weather was great all weekend) and already clean Jaguars and Daimlers were being cleaned (again) in readiness for the display day. Everyone was very keen and coupes were

lined up, and by this time, 32 were now present and drove in procession down the main street and back - a truly great sight, and then on to The Aquatic Reserve. This was a perfect location for our display, with lots of trees and atmosphere by the Murray, where the coupes were arranged in a semi-circle in the “bowl” with one XJC in the middle, flanked by with two lovely XJS coupes, in order to recognise the anniversary of that great Jaguar also.

We had anticipated having at least 36 coupes displayed on the Sunday, but for a variety of reasons this was not to be. To those who were not able to make it through illness, we hope all is well with you.

Another 60 odd Jaguars of all models came along and were parked up separately outside the XJC display, and we appreciate those who came from Victoria just for the day. A group from The Hunter club also made a tour of it to The Muster from Newcastle and we also appreciate their efforts in doing so.

It was a great day and a chance to relax a little and for us organisers to check out the assembled coupes. Old and new friends mingled, chatted and inspected cars in a relaxed setting, with a coffee van close by and the local Lions club with their usual tasty fare.

Some impromptu, informal judging was planned and the following owners and their coupes received awards. This was a difficult task, as many of the cars were deserving of such recognition.

The categories and winners were:

Best Original - Ian Pringle (SA) - Jaguar XJ4.2C

Best Modified - Wayne Woonton (VIC) - Jaguar XJ5.3C

Best Presented - Lloyd Eldred (VIC) - Jaguar XJ5.3C

Most Desirable - Greg Lewis (WA) - Jaguar XJ4.2C

Our weekend concluded with expressions of thanks for many who contributed to the success of the weekend, the awarding of the trophies, and $500 from surplus funds raised during the event was donated towards the new local hospital. There were goodbyes to those leaving for home, but quite a few stayed on to unwind and relax after a hectic few days before heading for home on Monday. The feedback from everyone has been fantastic and rewarding, and those who don’t normally attend Jaguar events were truly impressed.
