PRESIDENTS REPORT February 2012

Welcome to 2012. I trust you all had an enjoyable Festive Season with family and friends plus a little Jaguar motoring to add to the fun.

The Club has a busy year of events ahead of it, so best that you sharpen your pencils and start filling in the JDCSA calendar that now proudly hangs on the wall. For example trips away are planned for Ballarat, Mount Gambier, Renmark including the Humphrey Pump at Cobdogla and the Pichi Richi Railway just to mention a few. Then we have the usuals such as the Dinner Dance, to be held in July this year for a change, All British Day, McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic with lunch at Fox Creek Winery and SA Jaguar Day. Looking further ahead the Club will be 40 years old in July 2013 and I have asked Di Adamson to set up a group to plan suitable celebrations for this milestone in our Club life. If you would like to be involved or have any specific ideas on things to do or include for our 40th, please see Di

An impromptu mid week run was organised by Phil Prior and proved to be extremely popular with many “new faces” in attendance. Cars ranged from XK to E-type to Compacts to modern Jaguars. The day was BYO for morning tea and lunch with two different park settings for morning tea and lunch stops plus a visit to Mount Bold reservoir. What made the day so popular and enjoyable? Was it the informal eating arrangements without the pressure to be at a particular venue at a set time for lunch? Was it the informality of the day and the opportunity to relax and talk and lift a few bonnets? Was it the less chaotic driving conditions of the weekday? Your feedback on what you wish Club events to be would be much appreciated. Please tell a committee member your views or pass them on through your Register Secretary. We will create events and runs to suit the needs of the majority of members. Mid week runs definitely appear to be on the agenda.

The Committee has been looking at the idea of having a guest speaker (could be a Club Member or someone from another club, business or organization) to enhance interest at General Meetings, say every two months. Our first guest will be Vice President, Di Adamson who has agreed to give talk on alternative ways of purchasing and managing Club Regalia using on-line methods. The Club is in desperate need of a coordinator for this role, as both Committee and Members at large agree there is a need to maintain a range of Club Wares. Hopefully Di’s presentation will encourage a member to volunteer for this role. It can be tailored to suit the individual, who can write his or her own job specification. The advantage and popularity of regalia becomes most obvious at big events such as SA Jaguar Day and ABD. Of course, the National Rally to be hosted by the JDCSA in 2014 will especially highlight the need for a range of regalia.

The Committee has agreed in principle that the JDCSA should look into the appointment of a new Patron for the Club. This is not an urgent requirement, but has been part of the Club make-up for most of its operating life. In the past, the Committee of the day has taken suggestions for possible candidates for the role and after careful consideration made a recommendation to the membership for approval at a General Meeting. This is the process now outlined in clause 17 of the Constitution. If the procedure is followed diligently, approval is a mere formality and most importantly avoids any embarrassing discussion at General Meeting level.

In the past, the criteria used to define the preferred attributes of a Patron have been: the person must be well respected within the community at large, the person should have a strong interest in cars/car movement and preferably, but not essential, an interest in the Jaguar car. These criteria have served us well with our previous choices and will be used by the current Committee as a starting point for choosing our next Patron. However, if you see potential candidates who should be considered, but do not necessarily quite fit the above criteria, please feel free to put their names forward.

If you wish to put forward names for the role of Patron, please send your suggestions to the Committee or forward them through your Register Secretary. A brief written summary of your reasons for nominating a candidate would be helpful, but is not essential.

Finally, a word on Conditional (Historic) Registration. It does appear that legislation will be Gazetted this year (March has been mentioned) to introduce a cutoff date of 31 December 1978 for cars to be eligible. Any cars manufactured after that date will not be eligible once the ruling passes into law. In the meantime the rolling cutoff date still applies. If you have a 1982 car and you are considering putting it on Historic Registration I suggest you do so sooner rather than later before it is too late. Once it has been so registered it will retain its Historic Registration status, which will not be taken away when the proposed cutoff date is introduced.

I look forward to catching up with you at the February General Meeting.

Peter Holland

President

Organising a run this year!!!! I received the following invitation from the Adminstrator of the

Enfield Plaza

Hi, My name is Kristina and I am an Administrator of the Enfield Plaza Markets. We are based at the Enfield Plaza Shopping Centre 449 Main North Road, Enfield. The purpose of sending this email to all car clubs is to let you know that we have the perfect site for you if you have shows or public viewings or meets for your cars. Swap meets would be ideal here. We are on a hugely busy road, probably 100m from Gepps Cross (towards the city) with massive passing traffic. We are looking for ways to attract the community and customers into the centre. And we are planning to host many events in 2012 including Music Days, Multicultural Days, Car expo's etc. You may be looking for places to showcase your cars? Should this be the case, we may be able to assist. Aside from having a front carpark - our rear carpark is absolutely massive and totally undercover - great in summer and winter.

What do you think? Can you use our venue for some public show/meet/run/swap meet? Please let me know

Cheers

Kristina Market Administrator M: 0424000780 E: [email protected]

Some History on the famous D-Type

Experimental Fibreglass D Type

When the Jaguar D-Type emerged in May 1954, it was the most advanced car of its time. Its construction owned much to the aircraft industry experience of Malcolm Sayer and many others who were recruited to join him at Jaguar's Experimental Department. The D-Type pioneered a monocoque centre section fabricated from aluminium alloy sheet with riveted fasteners, standard aircraft practices in the Fifties but the first use of monocoque techniques for a competition race car. Other techniques and equipment sourced from aircraft production included a leak-proof rubber bladder fuel tank, which was important in a riveted sheet metal structure. The rear suspension was from the C-Type, with lateral torsion bar springing but now with parallel trailing arms. Mounted under the bonnet was the venerable XK unit in competition form, fitted with dry sump lubrication that both improved reliability and reduced the engine's height.

This allowed Sayer to further reduce the frontal area and smooth airflow across the body. The design was routinely tested in wind tunnels, reducing aerodynamic drag by 28-percent between the C- and D-Types and 20-percent between the ultimate 1953 C-Type and the long-nose D-Types of 1955.

At its first time at Le Mans, the D-Type nearly repeated its predecessor's feat of winning the event. The D-Type driven by Tony Rolt and Duncan Hamilton finished a bare 1 3/4 minutes behind the Ferrari 375 driven by Gonzalez / Trintignant.

Jaguar scheduled 100 production D-Types to be created, but later reduced this to 67 in August of 1955. By the end of that year all the cars were basically completed and had been assigned chassis numbers. Many had been sold, though some were still seeking ownership. In 1957 in an effort to boost sales, some unsold D-Types were used to create the XK SS.

Car chassis number XKD 544 and powered by engine number E5018-10. had been constructed in 1955 and was painted in the traditional British racing green. By autumn it was undergoing tests at the M.I.R.A. test track at Nuneaton with nearly all of the D-Types being tested by Les Bottril of the experimental department.

Page 11: 2012 February Classic Marque

10

XKD-544 was sent to Jaguar's main dealership “Brooklands” in Bond Street central London and put on display and would not return back to the factory until January of 1957. It was then updated with all the current racing modifications, by this point in history, it still had not found a buyer and was eventually reduced to spares. Jaguar completed this auction on August 12th of 1957.

Near the close of 1957, Harold Thompson, the head of the fibreglass department, was tasked with creating fibreglass composite body to replace the traditional fabricated aluminium alloy skin. After completion Norman Dewis the “factory development engineer” tested the car at M.I.R.A. on several occasions. The results of those tests found the construction of fibreglass materials and resins of the day were not strong enough to cope with the power of the car. This car remained with the factory as a test mule as well as being used for display and demonstration purposes over several years.

Though nothing came of Jaguar's "plastic fantastic," in 1956 Colin Chapman began developing his all-fibreglass road going Lotus Elite two-seater coupe, which was unveiled in the autumn of 1957. It would be another five years before the Chaparral from Texas introduced fibreglass chassis structures into racing.

The D-Type was ultimately replaced by the E2A prototype which ultimately became the production E-Type. XKD 544 was then lost for a time and then re-appeared in early May of 1959, when Auto sport Magazine carried an advertisement for the car on behalf of Philip Newby Cars Ltd. of Allesley Road, Coventry. The purchaser is not known, and later on re-appeared for sale in Dyserth, North Wales, advertised once again in Auto sport on August 14, 1964.

Purchased by Peter Butt, a London dealer specializing in XK Jaguars he set about to acquired original D-Type parts to do a restoration of the car. He contacted Harold Thompson, the original builder of the car, to learn more about the car. Harold revealed the car was the officially-sanctioned fibreglass D-Type whose body shell he had built in the factory experimental fibreglass shop, using a D-type chassis frame and other D-type parts.

By 1975, Peter realized he was not going to complete the restoration and sold it to John Pearson, who in turn sold it to David Cottingham of DK engineering, who again sold it on to Ronald Stern in 1978. Ronald entrusted the car to Jaguar race specialist Lynx Engineering and commissioned them to make a workable car with an aluminium monocoque. Later on the car was sold to David Duffy who intended to prepare the car for historic racing.

The car now had a new D-Type Aluminium alloy monocoque to the exacting original specifications of Jaguar. New exterior panels were fabricated by RS Panels to original specifications. An appropriate (later) D-Type specification engine was built, displacing 3.8-liters and fitted with many other original D-Type parts. The restoration work was completed by 1981. Duffy raced the car for three years including a Mille Miglia retrospective before selling it in 1984 to David Vine. It was to pass through several more owners throughout the years. It has been extensively raced in historic and vintage events ever since.

Andrew Pisker of UK Oakfield’s purchased the car in 1995, continuing its racing career proving it to be a competitive and highly reliable machine over its five year international historic racing career. Donaldson finished a close second in the prestigious Goodwood Revival Meeting. In 2001, the car was sold to Christian Trierenberg of Austria before it was again purchased by its current owner in 2006.

This D-Type is one of only 42 production D-Types ever built and its historic identity is supported by the FIA papers it retains, making it eligible for important international racing events. The 3781cc engine has dual overhead camshafts, three Weber carburetors, and is

Page 12: 2012 February Classic Marque

11

rated at 265 horsepower. There is a four-speed fully synchronized manual transmission, a tube frame with monocoque centre section, and four-wheel disc brakes.

In 2009, D-Type XKD544 was offered for sale at the Houston Classic Auction in Seabrook, Texas, where it was presented by Worldwide Auctioneers. Bidding quickly exceeded one million dollars, from there it went to two million, and slowly climbed to 2.25 million U.S.!

This is where the bidding stopped, as the gavel came down for the final time the car was passed in as it had not reached its reserve!

This article was sent in by Alan Baker (E-Type Register secretary)

A note from the editor…..

Alan is currently in the middle of building a D-Type. A car he has dreamed of for some time. I have had the pleasure to see this project up close and the only words that come to mind are wow and WOW.

This is a ground up build but the best thing is Alan can “play“ with the build and introduce his unique touches. Luckily Alan is fortunate enough to be very talented when it comes to building cars of extremely high quality.

I will be featuring updates on Alan’s D-Type project as it progresses. If you get a chance, try and have a look at the car by attending one of the E-type Register meeting in “Al’s Shed”. Seriously, an awesome experience.

JDCSA Mid Week Picnic Run ( 12 Jan 12)

Like many great events it began with a discussion over a pre Christmas drink. We were discussing the fact that January was a quiet month so far as JDCSA calendar was concerned. OK, so how about a mid-week run in mid January? And why do we always go to restaurants? What about a picnic run like we used to do? Sounds good!

The thought was sown and planning commenced. Maybe we will only get half a dozen or so cars but that is OK. So the wheels were put in motion and the rest is history.

The plan was to meet at Oaklands Estate Reserve in Marion 10.00 – 11.30am. This gives people time to turn up at their leisure. Bring a BYO morning tea. Slowly the numbers grew. An S type and then another, an XJ6 and then an E Type and another E Type, until 16 cars had arrived and approximately 30 people were enjoying their morning tea and chat under the shade of the gum trees. This is a wonderful park and soon to be further developed into a significant wetland catching water from the Sturt River (drain).

We quickly realized this was going to be a great day out. The clouds were clearing as predicted and a pleasant 24 degrees was forecast. Just as important was the mixture of club members and the variety of cars represented. It was fabulous to have members from five different registers. This included Xk’s, S Types, Mark 2s, E Types, XJs, Daimlers and S Type (Mod). This provided the opportunity to get to meet and get to know a little better some members from other registers as well as meet some new members

So at 11.30am we set off heading south towards Clarendon where we planned to stop for lunch. However first we would divert a little further up the road to Mount Bold Reservoir. This was an opportunity to take some photos and for the adventuresome (Colin and Margaret Haese) to show up the rest of us and take the walk down to the river and across the bridge and up the other side. Congratulations Colin and Margaret. Alan Baker threatened to do it but couldn’t get up the energy.

Sixteen Jaguars parked overlooking the reservoir made for an amazing site and photo opportunity.

It is now lunch time so we head back to the Recreation Reserve at Clarendon for a picnic lunch. What an absolutely delightful spot. Thanks to Doug Tilley for suggesting this spot it was perfect and will be kept in mind for future runs. The sun was shining and a cool breeze blowing, just magic!

Page 14: 2012 February Classic Marque

13

With lunch over, it was time to take a walk (some did so) have a chat and then about 3.00pm time to pack up and start for home.

A great day was had by all! We will do it again!

The place was hopping with music and loud conversation and every once in a while 'the lights would turn off.' Each time the lights would go out, the place would erupt into cheers. However, when the revelers saw the nun, the room went dead silent. She walked up to the bartender, and asked, 'May I please use the restroom? The bartender replied, 'OK, but I should warn you that there is a statue of a naked man in there wearing only a fig leaf.' 'Well, in that case, I'll just look the other way,' said the nun. So the bartender showed the nun to the back of the restaurant. After a few minutes, she came back out, and the whole place stopped just long enough to give the nun a loud round of applause. She went to the bartender and said, 'Sir, I don't understand. Why did they applaud for me just because I went to the restroom?' 'Well, now they know you're one of us,' said the bartender, 'Would you like a drink?' 'No thank you, but, I still don't understand,' said the puzzled nun. 'You see,' laughed the bartender, 'every time someone lifts the fig leaf on that statue, the lights go out. Now, how about that drink?
