After an impressive 43 years in the Parks and Recreation eld, Shoreline Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director Dick Deal will retire on January 30. Dick came to Shoreline in 2003 following his retirement from a long career as Parks Director with the City of Auburn. Some of you may know Dick as the guy in neon green sneakers who is never too busy to say hello as he climbs the stairs at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park. Others of you wouldn’t recognize him without his overalls and hiking boots at Community Garden events. What some people may not know is that Dick’s passion for Shoreline gave us the artistically enhanced, iconic bridges over Aurora, eld turf at Twin Ponds Park and Shoreline A & B Fields, Piano Time and Sculpture Stroll, and a Community Garden program. Under his leadership, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden was acquired for public enjoyment, o -leash dog parks were developed, and Celebrate Shoreline experienced an energizing transformation.Dick’s in uence on the community casts a wide net, but perhaps his most notable achievement was his work on the 2006 Open Space, Parks and Trails Bond. Dick worked tirelessly to earn your support for badly-needed improvements to Shoreline’s parks and trails, and when you said, “Yes!” he worked even harder to make sure the City kept our promises to you. Your support of these funds made it possible to signi cantly improve parks like Richmond Beach Saltwater, Cromwell, and Hamlin that have become some of Shoreline’s favorite places. As a Shoreline resident these last several years, Dick has delighted in supporting projects and events that have added beauty, vitality, and community-feeling to the City. Many of you have appreciated Dick’s willingness to hear your thoughts on any number of topics over deep cups of black co ee and hearty handshakes. In recognition of Dick’s impact on so many of us over these eleven-plus years, the City Council will host a communitywide retirement celebration on January 26 at 5:45 p.m. in City Hall. We hope you’ll stop by.As a Parks Department we will miss Dick’s breadth of knowledge and experience, sense of humor, approachability, stories and idioms, leadership, and friendship. It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we dedicate this Winter 2015 Recreation Guide to our outgoing director, Richard Deal. ank you for leaving us in good shape and good humor. ank you for believing in us and supporting us. As you transition from Douglas Firs to Yucca trees, and eld turf to putting greens, we wish you the very best in your new life. Congratulations!

Real Deal Public Rec Swim

* Family Swims are an adult/child program, an adult must be in the water with a maximum of three children per adult. Family Swim is in the shallow end only. Children under 7 years of age must be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times.

Shoreline Pool

Public Recreation SwimEnjoy the pool, the diving board, mats, noodles, inner tubes and the slide with friends and family. Open to all ages.

Arthritis Foundation Aquatics ProgramOur popular program is designed for people who are limited by impaired joint motion and/or strength. Program goals include improving or maintaining joint exibility, maintaining muscle strength or reducing muscle weakness, improving balance and coordination.

REAL DEAL SwimSame fun as a Public Recreation Swim at a fraction of the cost! Our way of saying “ ank you” for swimming at the Shoreline Pool every Friday night.

Gentle Water Exercise is program is to help those who need to slowly get back into exercise due to illness, surgery or medical treatment. is exercise is in the shallow end of the pool and no swimming ability is needed.

Sensational Water Aerobics!Shallow water aerobics and deep water exercise are low to no impact. Great for the joints. Absolutely no swimming skills required, but comfort in the water is recommended. e water environment works your cardiovascular system as hard as other high impact classes.

Lap SwimEveryone needs a good cardiovascular workout whether it’s fast, medium or slow. Swim for fun, swim for health. Get every muscle moving.

*Family SwimsA great way to spend quality time with your family. Especially fun for families with little ones who are sure to sleep after active play in the water! Fun in the water promotes con dence to swim. Adult must be present in water with children at all times.

Gentle Lap SwimIf you want to swim but don’t need to win the race or “churn” the water, this is the best relaxing lap swim for you. Recommended for seniors, but open to all adult lap swimmers.

Family Swims are an adult/child program, an adult must be in the water with a maximum of three children per adult.
