January 2012 will mark the six-year anniversary of the grand opening of the Student Recreation Center. Since opening this nationally recognized facility, University Recreation has strived to make every day like its first. We endeavor to meet the recreational needs and demands of our campus community while continuing to look toward the future.

In celebrating the start of a new year we hope that you will engage in the Recreation Experience available to you as a member of our CWU community. We look forward to hearing about your experience and welcome your constructive feedback so that we may respond to your interests as we develop and enhance our program offerings.

In the coming year we plan to grow our commitment to academic collaborations by working with partners across campus to enhance student development and embrace the concept of LEARN. DO. LIVE.

We wish you a happy and healthy new year and we look forward to serving you in the near future!

success stories “I signed up for personal training sessions for one reason. Before my first session with my personal trainer, I was scared. Could I do it? Would I be able to use all those intimidating machines? The answer was “Yes!” I found I could. I got stronger, lost inches, and lost a few pounds. I learned a lot about myself … I work hard, keep my commitments, and have a good attitude. I also made a new friend. My personal trainer was great in keeping me motivated and helping me be the best I can. I’d recommend personal training to anyone that wants to improve their health by working with someone one-on-one. It has been a great experience for me.”

— Staci Sleigh-Layman, director, Office for Equal Opportunity and Personal Training client

"I had knee problems before working with a trainer that limited my ability to play tennis. Now that issue is resolved and I feel great playing tennis."

— Sarah Mitterling, CWU senior Exercise Science Clinical Physiology student and Personal Training client

"The Recreation Center Personal Train-ing staff gave me the quality individual attention that was needed to rehabilitate my injuries. I am grateful for their dedica-tion in helping me reach my goals."

certified Personal trainer vs. trainer in trainingOur Certified Trainers have taken the necessary coursework and preparation to pass their Personal Trainer exam and are certified by an accredited personal training organization. Passing the Personal Training examination for any of these organizations is extremely difficult. It requires a full knowledge and understanding of the human body and how it responds to exercise in multiple environments, including injury and illness. Our Certified Trainers are recognized by any fitness club in the industry as qualified fitness professionals.

Trainers in Training (TNT) are individuals who may not yet be certified, but have the knowledge base to design and implement exercise programs for healthy adults. TNTs must be junior or senior Exercise Science undergraduate students pursuing a certification and/or have experience leading individuals in exercise technique. Certified Trainers and TNTs have limited client availability, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Collegiate Sport Club program provides students with the chance to participate in competitive sporting activities combined with abundant leadership opportunities. Previous experience is not required .

Each club is initiated, maintained and managed by its student members. Although the program is partially funded by Services and Activities fees, fundraising is also an essential component of every club.

The degree of competition varies. Some clubs compete nationally, which may require rigorous training multiple times per week throughout the year. Other clubs are more interested in the opportunity to compete, and may meet just once or twice per week.

Regardless of each club’s individual goals, our intention is to ensure these opportunities are available; to provide support that fosters leadership, organization and communication; and to manage the risk involved. Collegiate Sport Clubs staff has the privilege of meeting regularly with club officers to discuss their needs and the specific challenges each club is facing.

Club membership is not limited just to CWU students. CWU faculty, staff and community members are eligible to participate in the functions of the club; however, competition is restricted to CWU students only.

OPR is also a great place to find information, maps and directions to local hiking, camping and biking destinations. Stop in today to prepare for your next adventure.

Do you offer any certifications or trainings?Yes! OPR offers at least one professional-level train-ing and certification each year. Examples include Wilderness First Aid, Avalanche Level 1, Swiftwater Rescue, Raft Guiding and Climbing Wall instruction. This year OPR will have a strong emphasis in backcountry travel. Be sure to stay posted, because our clinics, trips and training line-ups are going to be incredible this year.

OutdoorPursuits AndRentals

24

Not ready to tackle these adventures alone?OPR provides instructional classes and guided trips to get you started. From multi-day kayaking excursions to day hikes and bouldering trips, OPR will take care of all the logistics so that you can fully enjoy your outdoor experience.

How do I sign up for one of these great trips?Registering for any of these trips is as easy as stopping by OPR to reserve your spot. These trips are not free but the prices are much lower than you may expect. Stop by today to sign up for those that you are interested in, as they fill up quickly and there are a limited number of spots available. You won’t want to miss out on these great opportunities.

Who leads these trips? For the most part, student employees lead our trips. Trip leaders have specific training in the trip area they are leading and are also required to have certifica-tions in Wilderness First Aid. If you are interested in becoming a trip leader, join us on one of our trips, gain certification and begin to build experience leading people outdoors.

What is it?CWU’s Challenge Course offers participants an exciting opportunity for groups of different sizes and dynamics to participate in team-building exercises. The course consists of two main entities, the high elements and the ground initiatives. The high elements include the 50-foot Alpine Tower, a mix between a rock wall and a jungle gym; the Odyssey, a two-level group ropes course with a zip-line descent; and the Giant Swing, a three-story rise from which participants swing across the giant expanse. All elements are Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) certified. We look forward to providing you an exciting and unforgettable experience!

Perfect for clubs, teams, coaches, businesses, community and youth groups, CWU’s Challenge Course offers opportunities to participate in team-building activities to accomplish both individual and group goals on low-ropes elements and a state-of-the-art high Challenge Course. This unique learning opportunity allows groups or individuals to face challenges in a controlled environment while enhancing problem solving, communication, decision-making and leadership skills.

Frequently answered Questions

1. Bouldering is un-roped climbing below the 14-foot designated bouldering height.

2. Top-rope climbing is a format of climbing in which a climber’s rope runs through an anchor at the top of the wall, with one end of the rope tied off to the climber and the other controlled by a belayer (who controls the climber’s rope to avoid him/her from falling) at the base. 3. Lead climbing is a more advanced form of climbing also offered here at Central.

*Please check in with Climbing Wall staff for further details involved with all of these formats of climbing.

The Recreation Center Climbing Wall stands 50-feet at its highest point and offers climbers an excellent mental and physical workout. Three types of climbing are offered at the Climbing Wall .

In general, our Climbing Wall can accommodate 15 participants in the space at one time. With larger groups, we can work with you to specifically design a program that works for your interests. For this type of private Climbing Wall reservation, we charge $16/participant for a two-hour session. These fees include everything your group will need to learn about and enjoy rock climbing. There are other logistics involved with these types of reservations, so contact us early.

University Recreation offers private Climbing Wall rental programs to groups visiting campus. These programs are an ideal way to celebrate a birthday or family reunion, or just a new and exciting way to get together with your friends. All private reservations are scheduled outside of our normal operational hours, as our number one priority is to serve students here on our campus.
