new Instructor profile:Meet Elena HaasComing from years of theatrical and film experience and lessons taught by life, I would like to earn your trust and support in taking up the creative arts program that has been led by talented and trusted professionals for the last 8 years. In a predictable routine that supports positive expression and personal choice, I would like to encourage students to come and explore the world of theatrical drama. With over a decade of experience in the performing arts, I bring experience in acting, directing, dancing, singing, voice, costuming and producing. My passion lies in the community experience of the arts - where individuals grow and together create something unique and meaningful. It takes courage and vulnerability to jump into the arts. For everyone who would like a turn to do so, they will find the support that nurtures further exploration.

Winter’s stormy weather is here and now is the time to prepare for winds, rain and fl oods. If you haven’t already cleaned your gutters and outdoor drains, do it now. This simple step will prevent fl ooding.

Personal Preparedness:Listen to your radio or television for winter storm forecasts. Check your disaster preparedness kit. It should include food, light sticks, water, fl ashlights, a battery powered radio and a wind-up clock. Know how to safely use a generator so it will not create dangerous indoor carbon monoxide buildup. Never burn charcoal or use a generator indoors or in a carport. Stay away from downed power lines.

Make sure your vehicle is prepared!Equip your vehicle with all-season tires. Fill your gas tank before stormy weather hits. Dress to keep warm and dry in case you become stranded and have to walk. Allow extra time to reach your destination. Take routes that avoid low-lying roads that may be underwater. Follow offi cial emergency evacuation routes. Do not go around “Road Closed” barriers. Do not drive or walk through standing water.

As an example, approximately 72% of Shoreline’s current housing market is made up of single family housing on individual lots and most homes are not within easy walking distance of public transportation. The City’s efforts to increase development in certain areas will create housing options around transportation hubs allowing older residents to remain in Shoreline and maintain their independence. In fact, we believe our focus on Aurora Square, Town Center and light rail station areas will make us more “age friendly” in the future.

Another area where you will begin to see changes to address the needs of adult residents is with our recre-ation programs. In the coming years we will be modify-ing current programs, as well as adding new activities, that target the interests and abilities of these residents. You can see some of those opportunities in the Adults section of this guide and you can expect more in the coming months and years.

According to the 2010 Census, the City of Shoreline has the second highest percentage of people 65 and older in King County at 15.2%. And at 40.6 years old, Shoreline has the seventh oldest median age in Wash-ington State. What does this mean? It means that while all cities will be experiencing dramatic changes in the coming years as the Boomer generation gets older and begins to retire, Shoreline will experience it to a greater degree.

Throughout the United States, communities are looking at how changing demographics of older populations will impact government services. We have all heard about how the aging population will have dramatic impacts to healthcare, but what about infra-structure and other services? While the population gets older, infrastructure will need to change to become more age-friendly in ways that haven’t happened in the past.

With more people living longer and better lives, the Boomer generation will continue to be on the move well into retirement, unlike past generations. That means the City’s infrastructure and services will need to better accommodate older users.

Across the City, departments are thinking about how the impacts of our changing demographics can be addressed. We are looking at housing, transportation, outdoor space and buildings.

How the Boomer Generation shapes our City
