Sr. MaryRinaldi’s

LetterDear Friends,

As we prayed the blessing over the Advent wreath,I was particularly struck by the words of theProphet Isaiah: “The people who walked indarkness have seen a great light; upon those whodwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone”(Isaiah 9:1-2). This Light, this Christ our Savior, born on Christmas day, fills every nook and crannyof our lives. From our little corner of the SalesianSisters’ Development Office, we experience His lovethrough you. Because of your generosity and lovewe have been able to bring His Light to countlesschildren thoughout our Province. My gratitude is inmore than words – it is in prayer that never ends!

The year nearly past was more than a “lucky” year– 2007 was a year of blessings! In particular, wehave new members in Partners Circle, more studentssponsored in our Salesian Schools, and hundreds ofchildren in summer and after school programs! And perhaps, best of all, new women are joiningthe ranks of Salesian Sisters.

We look with hope to 2008, our centennial year, which is just around the corner. In this issue we areoffering a special way for you to participate in thecelebration by dedicating one of our 100 years andsupporting our history book project. See pages 6-7.

Save These Datesand stay tuned for more details

in the New Year! “Holiness is at home in our Salesian Family,”affirms Sr. Helene Godin. November 11 wasa very special day that made this statement

come alive. A young Mapuche Indian from Chimpay, province of Rio Negro, in Patagonia, Argentina, wasbeatified on this memorable day, and the entire SalesianFamily throughout the world joined in the celebration.

The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal TarcisioBertone, represented Pope Benedict XVI for thebeatification of Ceferino Namuncurá (1886-1905) at hisbirthplace. Beatification is the final step on the road tosainthood. Blessed Ceferino’s birthday, August 26, willbecome his liturgical feast day.

Blessed Ceferino (right) was astudent of the Salesian Society inArgentina. “We give thanks to theLord for the extraordinarytestimony of this young, 19-year-old student who, inspired by hisdevotion for the Eucharist and lovefor Christ, wanted to be a Salesianand a priest to show his fellowMapuche the path to Heaven,” Pope Benedict said. “Withhis life, he lightens our path to sanctity, inviting us to loveour brothers with the love with which God loves us.”

In Haledon, NJ, the Community of the St. JosephProvincial Center marked the occasion with adramatization of Blessed Ceferino’s story. Sr. Heleneeloquently personified Blessed Ceferino. Sr. GerardBarattino joined in as his mother, while Sr. AntoinetteCedrone portrayed a professional news reporter.

Sr. Helene shared the highlights of Blessed Ceferino’s life.Knowing that He was deeply loved by God and theSalesian family who were his educators, Blessed Ceferinoresponded with the gift of his life for his Indian tribe, which was on the verge of extinction. Instead of having hisdesires for the priesthood fulfilled, he stole Heaven at theage of 18.

Now all of Argentina and all the Salesian world rejoicesas we ask Blessed Ceferino to help us on our own journeyof faith to have the same courage and audacity, and lovefor Jesus and Mary.

Leave a Legacy for the Salesian Sisterswhile providing for your heirs!

Charitable gifts made through your estate are a wonderful way to provide lasting supportfor the Salesian Sisters. It can be possible to make such gifts while you minimize taxesand/or settlement costs and conserve more of your estate for loved ones.

Here are some points to remember:

• Estate gifts can be funded with cash, securities, real estate, or other property.

• A gift of all or a portion of the “residue” of your estate refers to property remaining after alldistributions to family and others have been satisfied.

• Gifts may also be stated in terms of a percentage of an estate, thereby allowing gifts to increaseor decrease with the value of one’s estate.

• Gifts may also be directed to the Salesian Sisters from insurance policies, retirement plans, and bank and brokerage accounts.

• It is possible to designate how you would like your gift used when it is received. You may provide that funds be used to meet the immediate needs of the Sisters, or you can designate that they be used for a specific purpose, such as education of at-risk youth, summer camp programs, the Salesian Sisters’ retirement home, or vocations.

• Memorial gifts are often received through an estate. A memorial can serve as an enduring and loving tribute to one or more individuals while contributing a gift of hope to the Salesian Sisters.

As you can see, with a minimum of planning, it can be possible to support the Salesian Sisters in thefuture while first providing for your heirs in ways that can change with circumstances over time.

If you would like to leave a legacy, our legal title is Missionary Societyof Salesian Sisters, Inc., and our federal tax ID # is 22-6043753

Christmas LightSr. Phyllis Neves’ Letter

It has been said, and rightly so, that if Jesus is bornin Bethlehem a million times, and walks the roadsof Palestine for a million years, but has never really

been born in your heart, then what difference doesChristmas really make?

At Christmas, people extend warm greetings and offerpresents to family members and friends. At Christmas, there is an outpouring of caring and affection by manypeople. At Christmas, the suffering of the sick and thecondition of the lonely seem less acceptable than onother days. At Christmas, it seems that almosteveryone wants to contribute to the successof the festive holiday.

At Christmas, more than on any other dayit seems, people need the kind of festivespirit that brings peace and light into theirlives. Indeed, at Christmas, more than atany other time of year, something comes tolife deep within us and gives us light – notin the form of easy answers to our anxiousquestions about violence and suffering and injustice, but in the form of an Infant, born in a stable, in a towncalled Bethlehem, two thousand years ago.

“God is Love.” It’s not meant to be a lovely phrase or apious slogan. It’s meant to be the guiding light towardliving with meaning. It’s meant to be the basis for anintimate relationship with the Teacher who came fromGod and identified Himself as the “Light of theWorld.” It’s meant to be the supreme expression of thereality that the Power that holds the stars in theirplaces, the power that keeps the entire Universe inrunning order. That power is Love.

What happens when the words “God is Love” enter andimpact the core of a person’s being? Charles Dickensgave us an indication through his famous Christmas Carolcharacter, Ebenezer Scrooge. On the day beforeChristmas, the financier Scrooge was in a particularlybad mood. He was not interested in what human beingswere actually worth, but only in what they were worthto him. Everyone who encountered him was chilled anduncomfortable. Yet Scrooge was more unhappy thanthey. They could escape from him and his atmosphere;he could not escape from himself. But in a dream on

Christmas Eve, by the Graceof God, Scrooge discoverednew life. When he openedthe window in the morning, the face of the world hadchanged. He thought it was a beautiful day. Casualpassersby on the streetgreeted him with a smile, called forth by his own radiant manner. And this is onlythe beginning of what happens when the love-lesson ofthe Light of the World enters and dominates the core of

one’s being!

At Christmas, God stooped low andbecame flesh in the form of an Infant, in astable, in the Town of Bethlehem. There,God became one of us to tell us how muchHe loves us . . . to tell you how much Heloves YOU.

Are you willing to:

. . . stoop down and consider the needs and thedesires of little children; to remember the weaknessand loneliness of people who are growing old; to stopasking how much our friends and family love you,and ask yourself whether you love them enough?

. . . bear in mind the struggles that other people haveto endure in their lives; to try to understand whatthose who live in the same home with you reallyneed, without waiting for them to tell you?

. . . believe that love is the strongest thing in theworld, stronger than hate, stronger than violence, stronger than death, and that the blessed life whichbegan in Bethlehem two thousand years ago is theimage and brightness of the Eternal Love?

If the answer is yes, then let us not allow love totransform our hearts only for today. Let it be the lightand sign of God’s love alive in us today and always. The world needs us to make love visible . . . to makeJesus visible.

A Blessed Christmas to all!

“The worldneeds us tomake lovevisible.”

We Miss OurDear Friend,Vern Smith

On August 7, a day after his80th birthday, the SalesianSisters lost a great friend and

benefactor, Professor Vern Smith. In1991, Vern was introduced to us, andfor all these sixteen years he was thesmiling face and dedicated worker, togetherwith Eugene Phillips, who made the annualSalesian Sisters’ Christmas and Spring Parties a tremendous success.

As a professor, Gene testifies that Vern was “a very gentle man andhumble, never thinking he did anything special. Yet, he had many artshows where his oil paintings were displayed throughout the world. Hetook a lifelong interest in his students, becoming their friend after theygraduated.”

God bless you and rest in peace, dear Vern, and may you be blessed forall the good you accomplished for your Salesian Sisters!

My mother, Mary, had a stroke on October 21, andpassed away on November 1. She had a long

history with the Salesian Sisters. I remember Sr. Adelinaand Sr. Mary from my childhood. I know my motherknew the Sisters when I was born, and I will be 60 yearsold this month. It was my mother’s wish that the Sistershave the check that I am sending today. Thank you foralways praying for us!

This may seem like an odd topic, but the action of waiting is onethat often fills our lives. We

wait in traffic, often impatiently. Wewait at the doctor’s office, often withtrepidation. We wait in line at thesupermarket, as our minds runrampant with the million things stillleft on our ‘to do’ list. We wait for theweather to improve, for a much-needed vacation, for a sale, for moretime to do what we really like to do.

With all this waiting for what comesnext, it can happen that we lose sightof the preciousness of the presentmoment, of living it intensely, beingfully present to what we are doing andwhat is happening around us.

A wise person once said to me, “Dowhat you are doing.” I must confess,it took me a while to figure out justwhat she meant. But gradually it sunkin. I noticed that often I was “absent”from the moment, thinking of thefuture, waiting for what was comingnext or mulling over the past, so thatthe present was being lived, almostmechanically. Gradually, I learned tobe present to the present, to do what I

Millennium MeditationWaiting

was doing here and now. It might bewriting an article without thinking ofwhatever else I had to do after. Ortranslating the Word of the Day, aBiblical reflection that we send outdaily via e-mail based on one of theLiturgy readings of the day. It may bespending quality time withthe Sisters or talking withguests. It may be justimmersing myself in theeloquent silence of ourHouse of Prayer.

I must say that life takes aquality leap when the present momentis lived in fullness. I have come tobelieve that this is what contemplationis all about, presence to the here andnow. It is definitely not waiting. Jesuspraised Martha’s sister Mary for sittingwith Him and listening to Him, fullygrasped by that moment. He revealedthe reality of who He was to theSamaritan woman, who paused at thewell with Him, carefully following Hiswords. Jesus tells us to look at the wildflowers of the field, to contemplatetheir beauty, to notice the birds who“neither spin nor reap,” to read thesigns of the times. Yes, He tells us to

be watchful, to be expectant, but not atthe cost of losing the treasure of thepresent moment.

There is another aspect to this“presence,” and it was articulated byone of our early Sisters. She was

kneeling before the taber-nacle in the chapel whenshe heard these words:“Live the present mo-ment and live it in love.”Looking around, she sawno one. She knelt again;

the words were repeated. She knew they came from Jesus.

Perhaps, in our frenzied and confusedtimes, Jesus is whispering these wordsto us, drawing us away from anxiety, restlessness. He is telling us that theonly thing we have is the presentmoment. He gifts us with thismoment, here and now. He asks us tolive it “in love,” to treasure it. Lovegives value to everything, even thewaiting that can become giftedmoments of prayer, of communionwith Him and with ourselves.

Salesian Youth Report

An interdisciplinary project atthe Academy of Our Lady inMarrero, LA, brings together

theology and English classes to makevaluable use of the lessons to belearned from Nazi persecution ofJews during World War II. Theproject links literature studies andsocial justice issues to give theAcademy’s seniors a comprehensiveunderstanding of the massivegenocide perpetrated in 1930’s and1940’s Europe.

Chris Collins, English IV teacher, explained that his students began theproject by reading Night, Elie Wiesel’sautobiographical book about Nazipersecution of Jews. Students alsolearn about the social issues occurringduring the time of the story. Inaddition, Collins’ students also createa three-dimensional representation ofa scene from the text.

At the beginning of the secondquarter of school, students select atopic related to the Holocaust andstart work on a research paper thatbuilds upon their classroom learningand expands their understanding ofthe political and social situationssurrounding the event. While studentswork on the Holocaust projects inEnglish classes, they simultaneouslystudy genocide and other socialjustice issues in theology classes.

One especially poignant aspect of theproject is a visit to the Academy byShep Zitler, a 90-year old localresident and Holocaust survivor.Zitler has visited the campus formany years and recounted hisexperiences during the Holocaust. Hewas a soldier in the Polish Army andspent five long years in forced labor

camps after he was captured by theNazis.

In his recent visit to the Academy,Mr. Zitler told an assembly of theschool’s seniors that every one of hisrelatives, except for a sister who hademigrated to Palestine, disappearedduring the Nazis’ massive genocide.

After his liberation at the war’s end,Mr. Zitler left Europe for the UnitedStates, where he landed, he said, withlittle more than $3 in his pocket. Hetook up a career as a travelingsalesman, and in his retirement he hasspoken at many schools about hisHolocaust memories.

He has also shared with hisexperiences with Attorney JohnMenszer, the director of an Internet-based project, HolocaustSurvivors.org, that documentsmemories of Holocaust survivors.

Collins said that Mr. Zitler’sparticipation in the Academy’sHolocaust studies provides aprofound, real-life dimension to theproject.

“I consider it an honor that Mr. Zitlertakes time to visit with our students,”Collins says. “It appears that studentsare more interested in the researchpaper for the English class afterspeaking with Mr. Zitler. They nowhave a direct connection to the eventsthrough the shared experience of Mr.Zitler.”

In addition to Collins, other Academyof Our Lady teachers who havejoined together on this project areSenior Theology teachers BonnieCollins and Sr. Michelle Geiger,FMA; and English teachers DorindaColeman and Doris Fettet.

Holocaust Survivor Brings History to Life

Shep Zitler takes questions from the Academy of Our Lady’s senior class following a lectureon his Holocaust experiences. Mr. Zeitler lectured to the seniors in Immaculate Conception

Church, which is located near the Academy’s campus.

POPE JOHN PAUL II SCHOOL, CLIFTON, NJ –Students love science! At right, students in Ms. Roscoe’s7th grade class, including Gianni Nolasco and VanessaOctaule, recently made a dynamic statement, combiningfashion and science. Ms. Roscoe assigned each student adifferent element from the Periodic Table. The studentsresearched information and sketched unique t-shirt designsthat incorporate all the information. They then used avariety of materials including paint, non-washablemarkers, feathers, and foam balls to convey their designs.

After the designs were completed, the students sportedtheir newly created fashion statements on their way downthe hall to the 6th grade classroom, where they introducedthemselves as their periodic element and taught the 6thgraders about the importance, uses, and properties of eachelement. How creative! Well done, everyone!

It’s alive! It lives silently, breathing, living, consuming, and dying in your kitchen cabinet. Itis, of course, yeast! Mrs. Fergesen’s 5th gradeclass (left) at Pope John Paul examined themixture and brought it to life. After addingwarm water and sugar to the yeast, they placedthe mixture into a bottle and stretched a balloonover the opening. Within minutes, the balloonwas inflated. The yeast was a living thing! Aliveand alert, the fungus reproduced and grew, going through a million tiny lifetimes, all thewhile producing carbon dioxide gas. It was thisgas, a waste product that we, too, expel, thatinflated the balloon. A major scientific discoverytook place right here in our science lab!

ST. THERESA SCHOOL, KENIL-WORTH, NJ – Seventh-grader RosaCuppari has a story to tell! Rosa was oneof only 33 children in the United Stateschosen for the “People To PeopleAmbassador Program.” The summerprogram offers children the opportunity tobroaden their horizons throughinternational travel.

Rosa headed Down Under to Australia! After a 20-hour flight the group of 33students and three chaperones foundthemselves in Sydney for 19 days. Therethey learned all about the native culture.

The journal Rosa kept was filled withexciting days traveling and eating exoticfoods, such as shark! Her time spenttraveling all around the country offeredmany new experiences, such as how soft ababy penguin can be, how to hold a koala(left), and how to pan for gold! She alsoenjoyed learning all about the Aborigines’culture and their unique drawings anddances.

“I have changed because of this trip. Ihave become much wiser to the world andcultural knowledge, and I have alsolearned to be more patient,” Rosa says.
