Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter

Dear Friends,

As the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT unfolded and developed with the tearing, searing conclusion of the death of so many innocent children and courageous adults, the Salesian Sisters felt the loss profoundly, as our charism is the education of young people. But we also felt a sense of impotence. Yes, we prayed for the families and marveled at their resilience and faith, but as we prayed we wondered what could we do to participate more fully in the sorrow and loss?

Then a person who understood what eternal life truly is and how spirituality could somehow mend hearts broken by such a tremendous sorrow came forth and offered to adopt 20 of our Sisters to pray for the families of the 20 children who were the Holy Innocents of our time. The elderly Sisters at the St. Joseph Center in Haledon, NJ are honored and privileged to be a part of this great gift with their prayer for one year. As so many of you can attest, the Adopt-a-Sister Program provides comfort and healing. Thank you to our friend’s spiritual vision and goodness.

Some news to report:

• The Partners Circle continues to be the foundation of our mission as our unrestricted emergency fund. I am touched by so much faith and generosity. Won’t you join us in this New Year? See page 9.

• More young women are responding to God’s call to serve as a Salesian Sister. Starting with this issue, our Aspirants share the inspirational stories of their vocation journeys. See page 15.

• We are ready to send you your giving summary for the year 2012. Kindly contact us for whatever you need, toll-free: (877) OUR-NUNS.

Making Headlines Around the Province

An Oratory is a place, an attitude, and a method. The Salesian approach to youth

ministry is, first and foremost, a way to Jesus. St. John Bosco believed in establishing a place where young people can feel welcome, safe, and peaceful. It is a school where life skills are learned. It is a church, a place of prayer and spiritual development. It is a playground where fun and joy celebrate life.

The Salesian Sisters’ community in Miami, FL accepted an invitation from Fr. Juan Carlos, Pastor of St. John Bosco Parish, to organize a Salesian oratory in his parish for youth in grades 7-11 on Saturday afternoons. The parish serves more than 6,000 impoverished families, mainly immigrants from Nicaragua. We gather two Saturdays a month at St. John Bosco Parish and one Saturday a month transport the youth

spent around a roaring campfire.

to Immaculata-LaSalle High School to enjoy the gym, field, and other activities not possible at the parish because of limited space. ILS students who are members of the Salesian Oratory Club as well as other school clubs assist the Salesian Sisters in offering hospitality to the youth of the St. John Bosco Salesian Oratory.

Members of the ILS Environmental Club take students kayaking in the mangroves adjacent to the ILS campus (as pictured on the cover). The Club holds monthly clean ups via kayak to help maintain healthy mangrove and seagrass habitats next to their beautiful campus located on Biscayne Bay.

Fishing is also included, and the day usually ends with a wonderful time around the campfire.

Truly, youth partnering with youth is the ideal of Don Bosco’s Oratory!

We Loved Our “Night in Old Havana”!

Provincial Sr. Karen Dunn and Bishop Manuel Cruz of the Archdiocese of Newark present our Gala honoree, Sr. Esther Cruz, with a special tribute.

Congratulations, Marta and Juan Gutierrez, our evening’s honorees! At right, Juan joins Mary Help of Christians Academy Principal, Sr. Lise Parent.

On Friday, December 7, more than 350 family, friends, and benefactors came together for

“A Night in Old Havana,” held at the Hilton at Woodcliff Lake, NJ.

The evening’s honorees were Juan and Marta Gutierrez of Colts Neck, NJ and Sr. Esther Cruz, FMA. We saluted their friendship, support, and service to Mary Help of Christians Academy and its Salesian Sisters-owned and operated middle and high school, which serves young women from Paterson and beyond.

The Cuban-themed night was led by friend of the Gutierrez Family, emcée Ino Gomez, host of “El Handyman en Su Casa” on Univision’s radio station WADO. The night featured a silent and live auction; dinner and dancing; an authentic cigar roller; a mojito bar; a Grammy-Award-winning Latin band, Sammy Galvez and his Orchestra; and professional dancers.

Congratulations to the winners of the 50/50: Mary Help of Christians Academy (First Place), and Teresa Gutto of Allendale, NJ (Second Place).

Special thanks to our sponsors who helped make the Gala a tremendous success, including Juan and Marta Gutierrez; Beverly and Rodger Rohde; Daniel Culnen of C and H Agency; Mr. & Mrs. Al Daloisio of Railroad Construction Co., Inc.; Foley, Inc.; Maryann and Robert Harkins; Spencer Savings Bank; and Aleta and Rich Taylor.

The evening was arranged by the Dames of Mary Help, a group of women who volunteer their time, energy, and talent to educate the local community about the importance of

Mary Help through special events and public relations.

Thank you, one and all, for helping

to keep Salesian, Catholic education viable for all young women!

Please Help Our Retired Sisters In Need!

This New Year, Please Give Us This Day!

Do you have a happy occasion you would like to share? The Salesian Sisters will celebrate with you. Is it a time to celebrate a less-than-

happy occasion? Our prayer for you on your special day will celebrate this event in your life. Have you someone to thank? Then please “Give Us This Special Day”! All of us will help multiply this gratitude. Any and every event or person or situation that merits special attention will be publicized on a bulletin board outside our chapel on your special day. All the Sisters, on that day, will pray for that person, event, and/or situation and for the person who requests prayer for the day.

The Sisters enjoy taking part in your family’s joys and, also, sorrows. You have become part of our family, and that is a wonderful exchange of love and concern for each event. The Lord has assured us, “Where two or three are gathered in My Name, I am among them.” What better assurance can we have?

Let this exchange of time be an example of our concern and love for one another. God bless you!

At the St. Joseph Provincial Center, Sr. Mary Terzo andSr. Mildred Zannetti wrote Christmas cards to their Adopters.

Please detach and mail in the enclosed envelope. Thank you!

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” – Romans 12:21

In the wake of recent tragedy and disaster, the human spirit, a reflection of the Creator God, again rises. Amid the horror of the accounts and

loss in Newtown, we see sparks of hope. Heroism of teachers and responders. Inspiration gone viral in the tweet: “Twenty-six Acts of Kindness” for each of the children and adults lost. We watched as grief-stricken parents extended sympathy to the gunman’s family. From among our readers there was a request to adopt 20 Salesian Sisters in the name of each innocent lost.

Prayers, letters, outreach, and so many questions; Why? Why? Why? What kind of world are we leaving to our children? What kind of world . . .

A broken one, for sure, but – in our Christian mindset – one that is also redeemed. Responses of love, prayer, forgiveness, compassion, hope, and generosity testify to that redemptive action of God within us. The kind of world we deeply long to give the new generations is called forth daily and rises from within us.

This is what we call the Paschal Mystery. We – with Christ – living, dying, and then rising. In our rising, we experience the power of God who pronounces the final word over evil. This is the stuff the Lenten Season is made of.

During Lent we acknowledge our own brokenness and sinfulness, and that of all the world, and then we allow the power of grace to rise in us. We pray, we give, we fast. With a flood of tweets and cards and prayers and acts of kindness, we immerse ourselves into the healing Christ who still transforms our world! The decision to overcome evil through the power of Good (capital letter intended) fires in us those sparks of hope to bring our world closer to the place we wish to leave to our beautiful children who grace it.

This year, 2013, Don Pasqual Chavez, successor to St. John Bosco and Rector Major of the worldwide Salesian Family, offers the traditional “Strenna” theme

for all of us: “Like Don Bosco . . . we offer young people the Gospel of joy through a pedagogy of kindness.” Our precious young people are taught, touched, and shaped by loving-kindness.

In his commentary letter on the “Strenna,” Don Pasquale offers the familiar verses below. They call us to model, for the young, Christ’s redeeming work:

When you thought I wasn’t looking,I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you feed a stray cat,and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn’t looking,I saw you make my favorite cake for me,and I knew that little things are special things.

When you thought I wasn’t looking,I heard you say a prayer, and I believed that there was a God to talk to.

When you thought I wasn’t looking,I felt you kiss me good night, and I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s alright to cry.

When you thought I wasn’t looking,I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked . . . and I wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.

This Lent we can pray, act, give, fast, tweet, blog – do as Christ did, overcoming evil in this world with the power of Good!

My Vocation Journey

Picture this: I’m sitting on an airplane, waiting for take-off with butterflies in my stomach.

I’m leaving sunny Florida and heading to New Jersey – New Jersey! – for the weekend. Only my parents and a small handful of close friends know the purpose for this trip. It’s top secret. I’m going to visit nuns. Salesian nuns. For the entire 167-minute plane ride, my earnest prayer is this: “Dear God, PLEASE let me hate it.”

For years, I felt a gentle tug . . . a whisper . . . a desire deep in my heart. “You were made for more. Give yourself to Me.” But, God, I already do so much for You. Haven’t I given You enough?

“I want YOU. ALL of you.”

I made excuses. I ignored it. I said no (repeatedly). I ran. But, He never gave up. Our Lord is a relentless lover and He continued His pursuit. I had my own apartment, a great job, amazing friends, and a strong faith community. I had everything a girl needs to be happy – and I was. Mostly. But at the end of the day I would lay in bed with a longing that felt like it could never be satisfied. An ache. A yearning for something more.

So, I finally told God that I would visit the Salesian Sisters. Secretly, I hoped that my weekend would be miserable. Then I could tell God that I tried, but that religious life was not for me.

The truth is, I didn’t hate it. From the moment I met the Sisters, I felt comfortable, like I could be myself. They were hilarious; the house was filled with joy. The prayer life was simple and practical, but with a depth that drew me closer to Christ. They even had espresso in the morning!

“I’m Excited My Heart is in God’s Hands”

I’d love to tell you that I knew right then that I wanted to be a Salesian Sister, but I’m much too hard-headed for my story to be that simple. I wanted a flashing billboard,

a booming voice from Heaven, a CLEAR sign that told me what God wanted. Instead, He spoke to me in stillness and silence. When I spent time with the Sisters, the agonizing restlessness in my heart was quieted.

After three more visits, wrestling with lots of fear, and countless hours of prayer, I decided to take the plunge and go where my heart felt at peace.

On January 31, 2012 I asked for an application to enter into formation to become a Salesian Sister. I had no idea it was the Feast of St. John Bosco, our founder. God finally gave me my flashing billboard.

It’s now been five short months since I joined the Salesian family, and I have experienced more love and joy than I ever thought was possible in religious life. My discernment journey is far from over, but my heart is in God’s hands, and I am excited to see where He leads me!

Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us!

Salesian Youth Report

ST.THERESA SCHOOL, KENILWORTH, NJ – Students in Ms.Pancurak’s third-grade class enjoyed traveling around the world with their own “Flat Stanley,” based on the popular children’s book series. Each student created a passport and a self-made Flat Stanley and learned about different parts of the world. They also kept a journal noting the special places of interest and facts about their destinations. Pictured above are “world travelers” Gabriela Ramos, Ava Perona, Alex Han, Sydney Phillips, and Paige Devanney. Bon voyage, kids!

IMMACULATA-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL, MIAMI, FL – Immaculata-La Salle is pleased to announce that it has been named as an Apple Distinguished Program for the 2012–2013 school year for its 1:1 iPad program, iLearn@ILS. By implementing transformative technology like iPads for students and teachers, iLearn@ILS joins exceptional programs all over the world who are examining the tools and learning environments required to enhance the student/teacher experience and develop the 21st-century classroom.

The Apple Distinguished Program designation is reserved for programs that integrate Apple technology in education and meet the five best practices: visionary leadership, innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, compelling evidence of success, and a flexible learning environment.

“Technology has changed the very nature of learning,” says Sr. Kim Keraitis, Principal. “The iPad provides our teachers with a better and more innovative tool for educating our students. Our goal is to have students

tapping into their creativity as soon as they come on campus in the morning and leaving energized with a sense of possibilities.”

The selection of iLearn@ILS as an Apple Distinguished Program highlights its successes in enhancing and extending teaching and learning with thoughtful and innovative implementations of technology. Immaculata-La Salle High School is the first Catholic school in South Florida to receive the Apple Distinguished Program title.

The Joy of Teaching in a Salesian School

We all know what teachers do. We have all had to

learn in a school. Considering the number of people who are NOT school teachers, perhaps they would be surprised to know that teachers learn from their students. Now, if your schooling was about sitting at a desk, asking an occasional question between writing assignments, you might ask yourself how your teacher learned from YOU?

As a Salesian Sister, I think I learned the most from the students I taught when we were at recess, on a field trip, at lunch, or at summer camp. I remember the last day at Corpus Christi-Holy Rosary School in Port Chester, NY, before the summer break. We were playing kickball. Recess was over. It was time to go. There were only two more hours left for the eighth grade. “Please Sister! One more kick. Come on, the bases are loaded!”

What else could I say but, “Of course!”

The ball flew from his toe like a guided missile, landing on the pinpoint that was the top of our flagpole. A fitting ending for so wonderful a class! The ball was never retrieved; a testimony to living fully the present moment.

Once I accepted a dare for which I received $40. Returning from a field trip, I stopped to buy everyone ice cream with my winnings. The sweltering summer afternoon became a lesson in gratitude and joy. Have

you ever listened to the jokes of fourth graders and laughed until your sides ached? Enjoying the company of others is often overlooked.

Lunches were probably the most

fruitful, telling stories about my growing up with three older brothers and hearing the children tell stories of when they were “little.” Listening to children tell stories seems to create a tangible realization of how alike we are, how humanity is linked, no matter the age, creed, race, or place. Human beings have the same basic needs and experiences. We have more in common than we realize.

Certainly summer camp for me was a 24/7 laboratory of enchanted learning. I learned kindness, generosity, self-sacrifice, working for the good of the group while watching out for each one, sharing what we have together, and gleaning the wisdom that “comes from the mouths of babes.”

In all this there are the lessons you learn from making mistakes. One of the greatest examples of love for a child or an adult is to ask them to forgive you, telling them that you are sorry.

I can well remember the look given to me by one of my students or campers that must have been the same look Jesus gave to the rich young man – the look of love.

St. John Bosco had it right when he said that education is a thing of the heart. It’s kind of funny that I really don’t remember too many unpleasant occurrences that weren’t turned into something funny. Another lesson I learned from the kids!

Salesian Youth Report

On January 7, ten University of Illinois students, Fr. Charles Klamut, and Sr. Maryann Schaefer left Chicago, IL for Tampa, FL, for the first

Salesian Gospel Roads Mission trip sponsored by the St. John’s Catholic Newman Center.

Our mission in Tampa was not to get away from the cold and bask in the sun, but to bring the Son to homeless people and those who serve them and to bask in His warmth. Our days began with the Eucharistic Liturgy and ended with Eucharistic Adoration, as we all realized that we can’t give what we don’t have. So each of us had to first have a daily, personal encounter with Jesus in order to recognize Him in those we serve and to give Him to them as well.

During our days in Tampa, we had the opportunity to serve lunch and to talk to the many homeless people housed at Pinellas Hope, a project for the homeless begun by Bishop Robert Lynch and Catholic Charities in the Diocese of St. Petersburg. After a tour of the facility (300 tents, sheds, and apartments), our task was waiting for us: to provide and serve lunch for 150 residents. We put on our gloves and wore our smiles as the residents came to get their lunch. After serving them, we heard their stories. Their stories and their love for God truly changed us!

Our next day provided us with an opportunity to be of service at Villa Madonna School and at the Salesian Boys and Girls Club after school. We couldn’t miss praying with our Salesian Sisters and hearing Sr. Gloria’s stories.

Our last two days were spent at Metropolitan Ministries, where we were the “behind the scenes” people, sorting food and clothing donations, staffing the clothing and

food markets, speaking with the people we attended to, and praying with and for them. Before our closing meal, we had the opportunity to hear, first-hand, the story of a gentleman who didn’t care much about himself (nor anyone else for that matter), was homeless and then changed his life forever. His name is Tony and his story made us all realize that the choices we make, or don’t make, make our lives what they are.

All too soon, our days in Tampa ended, as we closed our mission trip with a candlelight Rosary and hymns

to Mary, Help of Christians. Not one of us remained the way we were when we left. Not one of us can relate what happened without a tear in our eye and a heart overflowing with God’s goodness and love. To Tampa, with love, we will return again.

Club members served the local community by cleaning, serving, and brightening spirits with Christmas carols. Members also sold baked goods and collected proceeds to help sponsor families in need this Christmas season. Students were able to give back to the Kiwanis International Family who support the ICS Builders Club’s service learning endeavors, such as the sandwich making volunteer project for Ozanam Inn. Thank you all!

With the arrival of the New Year came our Fifth Salesian Congress,

held on January 5 in Miami, FL, for Salesian Cooperators (right) and other members of the extended Salesian Family. The theme was in line with the bicentennial program of St. John Bosco’s birth: his PEDAGOGY, the science and art of serving young people that he so skillfully developed through practice, through trial and error, and through years of observing how other oratories worked.

Fr. Julio Olarte, SDB, was the presenter with the simplicity that can only come from someone who deeply understands Don Bosco’s teaching and lives his life following his footsteps. He explained to us St. John Bosco’s educational philosophy, so important in developing the “Preventive System,” the fundamental charism of the Salesian Family. What a wonderful occasion for learning and fellowship! – Maricarmen Acosta

ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC PRESCHOOL, ST. CHARLES, IL – St. Patrick’s was so blessed to receive a visit from Bishop David J. Malloy of the Diocese of Rockford on January 9. The Bishop celebrated Mass at the church and then came to the Preschool for a visit. He was greeted by Sr. Isabel Garza, Preschool Director (left), the Pastor, Msgr. Joseph Linster, and 92 smiling preschoolers! In our gym, we presented Bishop Malloy with a card and said a prayer. The children then learned from the Bishop that he is a SPECIAL friend of Jesus. The Bishop then toured the preschool classrooms, offices, new playground, and other facilities. What a wonderful morning!
