When Sacred Heart Novitiate in Newton, NJ,was built 50 years ago, there were enoughNovices (future Salesian Sisters) to keep the

large facility functioning. With the passing of time, thenumber decreased, and the Novices were sent to theInternational Novitiate in Rome.

About twenty years ago, Sacred Heart became aspirituality center for the Province. Since then it hasserved countless numbers of young people and adults asan oasis of peace and spiritual retreat.

Now the two Provinces in the United States and Canadahave been blessed with a good number of young womenwho are discerning a religious vocation. It has beendecided that there be a house for initial formation inBellflower, CA, and the Novitiate has re-opened as a partof Sacred Heart Center.

On August 4, 2008, four Novices, two from the East andtwo from the West, entered the newly-established SacredHeart Novitiate. Sr. Joanne Holloman has been namedDirectress of Novices. Presently there are 11 Candidatesand, on October 5, 2008, six young women will take thenext step and become Postulants. Thank you, Jesus!

The Salesian Sisters’ Centennial Celebration took tothe road on August 5 as Sisters and young womenin initial formation boarded a bus to the Basilica of

the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception inWashington, DC. The pilgrimage was intended to givethanks for Mary’s presence during the first 100 years ofthe Sisters’ ministry here in the U.S., and to seek herintercession for the future of our Institute and Province.

Fr. Steve Schenck, SDB, offered a private Mass and helda prayer service at the Altar of Mary Help of Christians. There they commissioned Sr. Phyllis Neves, FMA,Provincial, and Sr. Margaret Wilhelm, FMA, who will beparticipating in the 22nd General Chapter in Rome, Italy, this fall. This is an international meeting of the entireInstitute that is convened every six years to review the lifeof the Institute and to project its path for the next sixyears. Recalling Mary’s prayerful waiting for the gift ofthe Spirit at Pentecost, the Sisters prayed that the HolySpirit might guide the minds and hearts of all gathered.

As each Sister boarded the bus to return home, she leftthe Shrine with the renewed conviction that, truly, it hasbeen Mary who has always watched over the Sisters, theirwork, and the young people entrusted to themthroughout these 100 years, and that it is Mary who willcontinue to guide us during the next 100 years.

I was raised Episcopal in a smalltown near Buffalo, NY, and nearlyeveryone belonged to some Protestantsect. We had a few folks who wereCatholic and what I knew from themis that nuns were very strict and therewas no meat served on Friday! Thiswas during the 1950s and 60s.

I worked for a Jewish hospital in one of the outpatient psychiatric dayprograms. The patients sponsored

wonderful role model. I feel gratefulto have Sr. Claire in my corner andcount on her and the other Sisters asfriends.

My yearly donation may have helpedbuild the retirement home but, morethan that, it has helped make me abetter person.

We all know by now the story of the firstfour Salesian Sisters who arrived fromItaly in 1908 to begin our 100 years ofservice in the United States. But whatabout the next Sister? Let’s imagine howshe might tell her amazing story. . .

Iwas the fifth pioneer Sister at St.Michael’s in Paterson. My nameis Sr. Beatrice Curtis, and this is

the way it happened.

The first four Salesian Sisters whocame in 1908 were all Italian andspoke only Italian with a smattering ofEnglish at best. There was dire needfor someone who spoke the languageand could teach them. Here is where Ienter. I was just a young Sister fromthe English Province, professed onlytwo years. At the time, I was inChertsey working among the boys, adifficult task, but I gladly welcomedthe sacrifices and tried to be kind andgive good example with the help ofJesus and Mary.

Lo and behold, one day my Superiorsasked me something totallyunexpected. Would I agree to go tothe United States, to the new missionamong the Italian immigrants that ourCongregation had just opened there?I was 22 years old.

Well, I was floored! This was the lastthing I would have dreamt of doing. But I could not say no to Jesus. Igathered my few belongings (and theywere really evangelically few!) and, summoning up all my courage, boarded a ship bound for America.

What a welcome I received when Icame ashore! Those four pioneerSisters were ecstatic and I felt trulyhumbled that they should deem a

Family TreasuresAnd Then We Were Five

young, inexperienced Sister such atreasure. What sacrifices in those firstyears when we lacked everything, even sufficient food at times! But wewere happy to embrace the hardshipsfor the good of the children who soonthronged to our school. The Sisterswere good students and appliedthemselves well to learning English.

Just as I was reallysettling in, theseintrepid Sisters spreadtheir wings and a newhouse was opened inAtlantic City. Guesswho was asked to go?Yep, yours truly! Off Iwas again to a newadventure among thelittle ones whom Idearly loved. God hadgiven me the gift ofworking well withkindergarteners andfirst graders. I mighteven say that I becamean expert at it and Ijoyfully shared myexpertise with other young Sisters asthey came along.

Of course, as a Salesian Sister, I hadmany other tasks, and cleaning wasone of them. At some point I wasnicknamed, “the Sister with a dustmop in her hands.” I always felt lovedand, as I aged, I received anothernickname, “Grandma.” Those youngSisters seemed overworked at timesand I would encourage them to restand to work for God alone. I guess Idid feel “grandmotherly” but I lovedthem all so much.

The years flew by. The work in theU.S. and Canada flourished and

many new vocations came to join us,even some that I had taught at St.Michael’s, like Sr. Veronica Milyo, Sr. Virginia D’Alessandro, and themother of Sr. Theresa Kelly. What ajoy to see my pupils become Sisters!

In my last years, Jesus gifted me with ashare in His suffering. I would layawake all night sometimes, refusing

medication to relievethe pain because Iwanted to receive HolyCommunion in themorning. At that timeone had to fast frommidnight on. But itwas well worth it tohave Jesus in my heart.

Happily, until I wasbedridden, I was ableto get to the chapel formorning prayers eventhough I needed to getup at 5 a.m. to beready. Sometimes Iwas on time and Iwould tell Jesus,

“Thank You! I made it!” At othertimes I would be late, and so I wouldapologize to Jesus, “I’m sorry, SweetJesus, I’m late!”

I want you all to know that the Sisterswere always very gracious and kind tome. Knowing my desire to be “upon things,” they would write out the subject of conversations, orsummaries of conferences, orsermons for me. I would tell them,“God bless you! God love you! OurSweet Mother Mary smile on you!”It was my only way to repay them fortheir thoughtfulness.

Rest in Peace, DearSr. Mary Carone

Sr. Mary Carone entered the Kingdom of Heaven onJuly 25, 2008, at the age of 94. Born in Brooklyn,NY, Sr. Mary was the oldest of the seven children

born to Anthony and Theresa (Lionello) Carone.

“My childhood was a peaceful and happy one, lived in thewarm atmosphere of a loving family,” Sr. Mary recalled.Since Mary was the eldest, she helped her mother in thehome, and also her father in the grocery store. She maturedquickly and became responsible in many ways.

Sr. Mary loved the Blessed Motherfrom early childhood and it wasthis devotion that carried herthrough the challenging times. She was an active member ofthe Children of MarySolidarity in the parish. TheChildren of Mary visitedspecial shrines of Our Ladyor religious orders dedicatedto the Blessed Mother. Once, the group visited North Haledon,NJ, where the Salesian Sisters werelocated. Mary felt that she had indeedcome home. She entered the Salesian Sisters’ community in1938 and made her religious profession in 1940.

She worked not only in schools but also with the youngwomen studying to become Salesian Sisters. She was trulya mother for the young candidates and postulants and wasalways ready to listen. She was firm but kind and onecould be sure that she would “forgive” any mischievousacts done by the young people.

Asked how she viewed her life, Sr. Mary said, “I havenever regretted one moment of my religious life. I havealways been happy in my vocation. It is in prayer that Iexpress my deep gratitude to the Lord, to Our Lady Helpof Christians, and to all those Sisters with whom I haveshared my life. I thank all for the graces, love, andattention lavished on me.”

In 1991, because of her delicate health, Sr. Mary came tothe St. Joseph Provincial Center in Haledon. She wasalways joyful and had an encouraging word to all who cameto visit her. It was a delight to see her so serene and joyful. We will miss Sr. Mary, but we are certain that the goodLord will reward her for a life filled with good works.

Salesian Youth Report

Our Journey with the Pope, Down Under

World Youth Day – some refer to it as the“Catholic Woodstock.” If you get yourselfcaught up in the singing, dancing and general

cheer of the event, I might just agree with them.

But no – World Youth Day is truly a gathering of Catholicyouth from around the world who believe in what they saythey do and don’t mind letting the rest of the world knowit. It’s a time of renewal –renewal in the hope theyouth hold for us.

Yes, World Youth Dayassures us that there is hopein the youth of the worldand that the Holy Spirit isstill at work in us. Toparticipate in a World YouthDay event is not simply fivedays of activities, but rathera journey, which for mostbegins almost a year or twobefore the actual event.

For our group, these eventswere in the form of sharing,Eucharistic Adoration, prayers, and the reflectivereading of “ePilgrimages”sent to us from the Australian committee.

A commissioning Mass was held for our pilgrims on July9 at St. Joseph’s Chapel at Mary Help of ChristiansAcademy. Sr. Phyllis Neves, our Provincial, gave outpilgrim crosses to all participants.

The journey towards Sydney began on July 11 at 3:30a.m. Finding our way to JFK Airport, we boarded an AirCanada flight to Vancouver, then on to Australia. Twodays later, on the morning of July 13, we caught aglimpse of Australia outside our airplane windows.

On touchdown, the cabin is sprayed for any type of insectthat might have gotten on board and then passengersdisembark for customs. Once through customs, our tourguide from Harvest Tours greets us and gets us to awaiting bus for our visit to Sydney.

On July 15 we are present at the opening Mass, celebrated by Cardinal Pell. So many flags from manynations and about 250,000 young people from around theworld have gathered at Barangaroo (Darling Harbour).July 16-18 finds us at our catechetical site, ImmaculateHeart of Mary Parish in Sefton, and animating some 300pilgrims through music and liturgy. What an opportunityto give back what we have so generously received over the

years! We met three visitingbishops and had theopportunity to talk to themup close and personal.

On July 17, we finallywelcome Pope Benedict XVI.Most of our group see theHoly Father go right past inthe popemobile. Sr. MaryannSchaefer? She’s on a boat, part of the welcoming flotillafor the Holy Father!

Just another “CatholicWoodstock”? By no means. To quote two of ourparticipants:

“After seeing Pope Benedict,I went to Eucharistic

Adoration at the Opera House with some of our group. Iattend Adoration every Wednesday night, so I knew whatto expect, but when I walked in the room, somethingchanged inside of me. I knew right then and there I wasfilled with the Spirit and Christ was definitely with me.”

“During catechesis, the bishop mentioned that WE arethe evidence of the Resurrection – how powerful is thatstatement? World Youth Day did inspire me to try harderto be that witness – in whatever way I can – because I amevidence! I made a connection that if I live (or lead) byexample, I can be a witness for the Light. I hope that Ican keep these words alive and keep following the Light!”

Amen! And now the journey begins to the next WorldYouth Day in Madrid, Spain, in 2011!

– Sr. Maryann Schaefer, FMA

Mary Help of Christians Academy students were commissioned aspilgrims to attend World Youth Day 2008 in Australia during Mass

at St. Joseph’s Chapel. Pilgrim crosses were given to all.

This summer, the “La Salle Fun Days by the Bay” summercamp was brought back to life in Miami, FL. For two

summers, hurricane repairs and lack of usable space prevented usfrom opening camp. Thanks to our generous donors, we were ableto reopen our doors to more than 100 youngsters, including thesewho challenged Sr. Teresa Gutierrez to a rousing game of UNO.Thank you, Immaculata-La Salle staff, alumni, students, andother area teachers who gave our campers a safe, fun summer!
