Supporting Her when She’s Unexpectedly Expecting

Many of us have known a woman who unexpectedly finds herself expecting. This can be a trying

time for her, as well as for the father if he is involved. There are a number of things we can do to

support those who find themselves in these situations to make the choice for life possible and any

other choices implausible.

Mothers in these situations often feel alone, ashamed, and unsupported. Hence an important first step is to make

clear that we are available to help in whatever way is needed. It is also important to convey by our words and

tone of voice that we do not judge or Condemn them for being in such a situation. Another helpful encouragement

is to remind her that, while this pregnancy will change some things in her life, it does not mean all her hopes and

dreams have come to an end.

Another important step is to help the expectant mother (and father if he is involved) establish a support system.

This might include helping find a good doctor, offering to provide transportation, offering childcare for other

children she may have or after the birth of this child, offering to help with meals, and similar support. In Topeka,

organizations like Mary’s Choices and Birthright provide this type of support both during the pregnancy and

after birth. They can be a great resource for helping us support mothers in need. You can also visit

www.walkingwithmoms.com for more ways to build this support system.

While being unexpectedly pregnant is a challenging situation, the choice for life is more than possible with our

support. This is a necessary part of building a culture of life.

Until next time, God bless you,

Fr. Matthew

World Mission Sunday Collection: October 23rd - 24th

On World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis reminds us of our baptismal call - to respond as missionaries. On this day we respond to that call, through our prayers and personal sacrifices for our brothers and sisters in the Missions - in places like Uganda where people face food uncertainty and violence...in the Philippines

where local clergy face martyrdom...in Oceania where people’s livelihoods are threatened by climate change...and in remote regions of Latin America where people are hearing the Gospel for the first time.

Respond this World Mission Sunday by supporting the priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay

catechists who provide loving service to those most in need. Donation envelopes are available at Masses this weekend and we thank you for your prayers that support these important missions!

FIRE YOUTH GROUP: MONDAY MOVIE NIGHT MONDAY, OCTOBER 25TH, 7:00PM-9:00PM, MOVIE THEATRE FIRE Youth Group will go to Hollywood 14 Theatre here in Topeka at 7pm Monday, Oct. 25th to watch the release of Michal Kondrat’s film, “Purgatory,” about the secret revelations of Padre Pio and Fulla Horak. We would like any 6-12th graders with their family to attend. Only playing in select movie theatres in the USA on October 25th & 28th.

OCTOBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY

The Church dedicates October to Mary as Queen of the Holy Rosary, so our littles ones from the Early Education Center visited the Rosary Garden in honor of Mary. They recited a decade of the Rosary

together and learned about what this special devotion means to our Catholic faith.

A Prayer to St. Joseph, Defender of Life

Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel,

you lovingly took Mary into your home. As

God’s humble servant, you guided the Holy

Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed

Jesus as your own son in the shelter of a manger,

and fled far from your homeland for the safety

of both Mother and Child.

We praise God that as their faithful protector,

you never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted

to you. May your example inspire us also to

welcome, cherish, and safeguard God’s most

precious gift of life.

Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the

service and defense of human life—especially

where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for

us the grace to do the will of God in all things.

Amen.
