KNOW THEM BETTER

What have been the most challenging questions or doubts that were raised to you by a student? In my career so far, I have not come across a student who has asked me a very challenging question. But, then I have found teaching accountancy to students with non-accounting background challenging. Students from accounting background accept what I say, but the others don’t really accept it readily.

Can you recount a proud moment in your teaching experience at Christ?IhavejuststartedworkinginChrist;soIhavenothadthechancetodomuchtoachievesuchamoment.Earlier,Iusedtoteacharesidentialcourse.Parentsofthosestudentstoldthattheyconsideredmetobeanother parent to their wards. It made me proud.

What according to you are the qualities that set Christ apart from the rest?ThemostremarkablethingaboutChrististheexposure-drivenandstudentcentricapproachofthemanagement.Themanagementiswillingtoprovidestudentsanyfacilitythatwilladdvaluetotheireducation at any cost; which I think most institutes are not willing to do.

The first thought that arises in your mind; when you start a class?“WhatamIgoingtogivetothestudentsthattheycan’tdoontheirown?”Thesedays,studentscanstudyac-counting from other sources like online videos but what makes me valuable as a faculty, is in how I am able to connect the theory to the application.

What distracts you the most during a class: a student who sleeps in the class, a day dreamer, cross talks or silly doubts?Definitely, asleepingstudent!IfanythinglikethatoccursIwouldintrospectastowhatcausedthat.Iwantmy students to be energetic. I encourage cross talks if it generates healthy discussions. And for me, no doubt is a silly doubt.

What is the factor that keeps you motivated?Thegreatfeelingaccompanyingsharingofknowledgemotivatesme.Igetasmuchknowledgefromthestudents, as I give them. If I want to know anything about a company; I give a forum message. I will get multiple answers for that in 2hours which otherwise would have taken me at least 10 days.

1947–TheyearitwasandtheyearthatwillremaininthemindsofeveryIndian.Indiahascomealong way from the time it was Hindustan. In the 65 years of Independence till now, India has had its own ups and downs in various areas and has received bouquets and brickbatsfrom other countries as well. But all said and done, the India shining story is still there on everyone’s lips. How many of us know that Citibank had entered India long before even India had got its Independence– in the year 1902 itself. India always had the potential to make it big which others recognized early on but our own people didn’t. With the freedom strug-gle, independence movement and birth of India- an independent nation, our forefathers then chose to rewrite thefutureforthebettersothatthecominggenerationcouldenjoythefruitsoftheirtoil.ButtodaywhenIlook back, I can’t help but notice irony in some areas under the guise of ‘advancement.’

Intheyesteryears, theSwadeshimovementspreadquicklyacrossthecountrywiththeobjectiveofinstilling patriotism in all by promoting the use of Indian goods. It even led to the boycott of foreign goods byburningthemasasignofprotest.Chakrabecameapowerfulsymbolandkhadibecamearage.Today,thesituation is completely opposite with people running behind foreign goods to display it as a status symbol . Knowing how Indians shop for luxury abroad, many international companies have taken this as a signal toentertheIndianshoresbyopeningupsubsidiaries,enteringintojoint-venturesandsoon.Howdoyouthink one should react to this? Is it that all this was inevitable since it was part of the liberalisation, privatisa-tion and globalisation process that had to happen during the late 1990’s? Was it because there was no other optionleftatthattimeorshouldwesitbackandthinkhowfickle-mindedwehavebecomeovertheyears?Why can’t we still hold on to our tradition and make it big that way? Look at China which has a very strong andrichculturelikeus, andtheydonotcompromiseeasilyunlesstheyfindspecificbenefitsforall.

Here in India, ‘all’ or ‘inclusive’ seem like Greek words as the rich and poor divide has widened so much that the rich do not know what to do with the extra money they have got and end up splurging on yachts, buying art or sculptures or vineyards abroad while the poor are left wondering when can they buy a small home of their own, how to provide education for their children, how to meet medical expenses and othersuchcriticalissues.Thisstarkdifferencebetweenhavesandhave-notswasnotwhatourforefathersenvisioned but despite Independence and advancements, we have yet to tackle the issue appropriately.

What about the freedom we have today? Freedom may mean different things to different people but the question that needs to be answered is - Are we using it wisely or are we misusing it? Look at the negative newsstreamingineachday–peopleholdingpublicofficesaresiphoningmoneyforprivateuse,,academi-cianswhofightforacademicfreedombyopposingthedeletionofpoliticalcartoonsfromtextbooks,Atpresent, Freedom is being taken for granted under the pretext that we are a democratic country. If we impose rules and regulations, then it becomes a case of curtailing freedom. Where the line differentiating the two should be drawn then? It is this ambiguity that leads some people to misuse freedom.

I am reminded of Jean-Paul Sartre, a French Philosopher who said “Freedom is what we do with what is done to us.” In our quest to be free, we end up holding on to our previous ways because we don’t know what to do with this new found freedom. We must realise that with this freedom, we actually need to equip ourselves to gain more and empower ourselves instead of misusing it to cause harm to others and self. After all, this freedom did not come for free ; our forefathers paid a price for this with their blood, sweat and tears. Ultimately you may or may not use the freedom that you are entitled to, but make it a point not to misuse the freedom at any cost.

One of the good things, I feel, that has happened to us after Independence in so many years is the RTIactwhichhasprovedbeneficialformanyespeciallyyouthprobingintoissues.Transparencyisbecom-ing the buzzword these days. With the information at hand, we need to follow it up with suitable actions as well. A simple example is that of a young girl who wanted to know when was the title ‘Father of -the Na-tion’giventoMahatmaGandhiandsheappliedunderthisRTIact.Withinafewweeks,aletterwassenttoher explaining that this question has not struck them before and that even after searching, there is no proper recordorevidenceshowingwhocameupwiththistitle.Thelessonisclear–makethegovernmentknowthattheyarebeingwatched(weevenhavethemediadoingthisthesedays!)Thestruggleandpainthatourfree-domfightershavegonethroughneedstobecompensatedbygivingaculturally,morallyandeconomicallysuperior India to the future generations. Freedom - this seven letter word, in the literal sense means behaving in the way one wishes/ per-ceives without being bounded by someone or something. Freedom is one’s capacity to take decisions and ac-tions without hurting the sentiments of others. It can be viewed with a positive as well as a negative connota-tion.Thepositiveconnotationistheabilityofanindividualtotakedecisionswhichareinhisbestinterestswhile the negative connotation is using freedom to infringe someone else’s sentiments.

Freedom can be achieved and experienced at various levels – individual or personal, as well as col-lective. Individual freedom can be experienced in the day to day affairs of an individual. When we talk about collectivefreedom,itisthefreedomweenjoyorratherweexperienceasacommunity.India,ourmother-landachievedfreedomon15thaugust,1947.Onthisauspiciousday,wewereliberatedfromtheshacklesofBritishruleinIndia.Thevictoryweachievedwasadirectconsequenceofthesuffering,dedicationandpatriotismofthousandsofmartyrswhoshedtheirlivessothatwecouldhaveabetterlife.Thepatrioticfer-vor which drew Mahatma Gandhi to bring his countrymen to the forefront triggered the desire for freedom, a right to live as they wished.

After being a free country, India slowly evolved itself and started adding many feathers to its wings. From being an agrarian and a backward country, it has pushed itself to be one of the fastest growing econo-miesintheworldafterChina.Education,infrastructure,tradeetc.flourishedinIndia.Witheachpassingday,India added new laurels to its name in various spheres – sports, education, entertainment, literature, science, arts etc.

As we complete our 65th year post independence, let us look back and perceive freedom in its ‘true’ sense, the freedom we are proud of, the freedom we boast of. When we sing praises of India, about each achievement that it has earned by becoming a free country, let us not forget that there are millions of Indians who are deprived of their basic freedom – the freedom to lead a decent life.

As new MNCs crowd in the metro cities, let us also, look at the slums that simultaneously crop up. As we produce thousands of graduates every year, let us also look at those tender eyes which crave for edu-cation,butaredeprivedofitandratherfindthemselvesemployedinsomefactoriesorasdomestichelp.Aswe develop new cities and build mansions for ourselves, drive in swanky cars, use the latest techno gadgets, let us also, look at those rustic, impoverished people who don’t even have access to one day’s meal, who live inrags, whodieofhungeranddisease, whofallpreytohumantrafficking, whodonothaveanyonetorelyupon for and care for, but rather lead their lives as ‘mechanical beings’ and then comprehend freedom in its ‘true’ sense.

Freedomisastateofmindwhichcannotbeexpressedinobjectiveterms.Itisinherentinthemindof an individual. Let us take each opportunity that life unfurls, to go out of our way to help someone , to make life a little easier for them, to understand their pain and therefore help them experience the ‘freedom’ they crave for . I would like to conclude by quoting the poem “Where the mind is without fear.......” which is writtenbyRabindranathTagore, oneofthegreatestpoetsthatIndiahaseverproduced.

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, Where knowledge is free, Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow domestic walls, Where words come out from the depth of truth, Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection, Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way, Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit, Where the mind is lead forward by Thee, Into ever- lasting thought and action, Into that heaven of freedom, My father, let my country awake.”
