Throughout my training at Dartington Colleges of Arts I was able to explore a number of contemporary approaches to creating live performance. It was through this training that I was able to explore site-responsive performance making in Ljubljana, Slovenia and work with practitioners such as Dr Simon Persighetti (From Wrights & Sites), Sally Watkins (From B-Side) and Professor David Williams. After travelling I returned to explore my own practices in creating new theatre, this led to a number of performances which toured the North West and built the body of work under Theatre By Numbers, which I co-founded. Theatre By Numbers has now become a Community Interest Company which works with marginalised groups to help build confidence, and a public voice, to share and show case their stories. I am very proud of the work we have created, and I continue to develop and deliver engagement projects for the company as its Artistic Director and Project Manager. My varied career has had a number of highlights but to name a few would be to mention exploring my dramaturgical skills under the mentoring of theatre vetran, Wyllie Longmore (actor, director and dramturg) which led me to my own 5 year exploration of working with new writing and a partnership with Elizabeth Newman at The Octagon, Bolton. My findings now inform the core of how I collaborate with performers and writers, particularly in the delicate early stages. And the returning to my original mentor, award winning director and producer, Jen Heyes who continues to be my directing mentor as I delve into my developing artistry offering opportunities to assist on projects such as The Opening Ceremony of European Capital of Sport “On Your Marks” I create work which is exciting innovative (and occasionally subversive). Presenting ideas that offer honest comment on relationships, fears and our deepest psyche, invoking response to challenging questions whilst also being entertaining, it’s a fine line to tread. I enjoy exploring truth, researching and creating a unique and immersive experience for the audiences using an eclectic approach to visualising worlds on stage and in non-theatrical sites through technology and inventive staging. I continue to create live performance through my current projects; Graphic Stories working with marginalised groups Reading the World and More Than Words. As well as working on four commissions of immersive performance with Astley Hall, Chorley, in collaboration with John Ginley from Lite Alternaitve and in partnership with Chorley Council. Testimonials “She has cultivated an environment of trust between playwright, actor and director that has allowed the work to flourish.” Wylllie Longmore “She is…a very gifted visionary director who is keen to explore making performance for contemporary and diverse audiences. I love her passion for fairy tales and storytelling, combined with live music and well crafted writing and performance. She has a good head for business and is very easy going and easy to talk to and this is tempered with strong leadership qualities.” Jen Heyes BIOG Telephone: Email: Website: 0790 471 4240 [email protected] www.charliemortimer.co.uk Contact Details 2001-04 Dartington College of Arts BA Hons Theatre (2:1) Qualifications Charlie Mortimer CV
