23. Here’s another way to get the same results. Use Undo to return to this: the base and untrimmed handles, with intersection edges.

24. Select all intersection edges at one handle (you may end up selecting other edges as well, which is OK. Copy the edges (Edit / Copy).

25. Edit the handle where you selected the edges, and paste in the copied edges using Edit / Paste in Place.

26. Now you can trim the handles as you did before, and remove the intersection circles from the base.

27. Undo again to the untrimmed handles and base, with no intersection edges.

This method will create a more realistic faucet, with separate “solid” pieces rather than hollow shells.

28. We will now shorten the handle so that it just barely protrudes into the base. Edit a handle, and use the guide point to draw a vertical circle. (Remember, you can Shift-lock a circle’s orientation before you click its center point.)

29. Move this circle slightly toward the end of the handle.

30. This time use Intersect Faces / With Selected (not With Model), so that you get intersection edges with the circle, but not with the faucet base. Then trim extra edges.

31. Close the handle, then use Intersect Faces on the base to get the intersection edges.

3. For the table glass, start by adding a rectangle in the 90-degree corner, and pulling it down slightly.

4. With Push/Pull still active, press Ctrl/Option and pull the rectangle down to the bottom of the table top. (Without Ctrl/Option, you would pull the rectangle all the way through.)

5. Paint the top of the rectangle with translucent glass, and erase the face and edges below it.

6. Add a table leg below the round corner. This one is a simple cylinder whose bottom face was scaled down.

7. Make a component of what you have so far. This is one-quarter of the completed table.

8. Make a 180-degree rotated copy like this:

9. Copy these two components and mirror them (use Flip Along or Scale).

10. Move the mirrored components into place. Here is the completed table, but you can see the edges that divide the table into quarters.

NOTE: For a plugin that mirrors selected objects automatically, see “Mirror” on page 327. In this case, you would have to run the plugin twice: first on one quarter, then on one-half of the table.

11. To make the table appear seamless, open any component for editing and hide the edges where the component meets neighboring components.

6. Pull the back face of the box so that it intersects the curved face. Then run Intersect Faces to create the intersection edges.

7. Erase the sides faces of the box, so that you are left with this:

8. Sample the material on the flat face.

9. And click the inner curved face to project the material onto it. The image size is correct, but the positioning is a bit of a mess. The flat sign face is no longer needed, so erase it.

10. To fix the positioning, let’s try to project the texture. Display the hidden edges, and right-click on one of the middle segments. Choose Texture, and Projected is not checked. Choose Projected to make the material here, well, projected.

11. Turn off the hidden edges, sample the projected texture, and click anywhere on the curved face. The sign now fills the face with projected image.

12. There’s a slight problem, however. Look closely at the first or last letter of the sign. The “G” below is stretched because it is on a diagonal face that has a projected image from a flat face. So to get a true wrapping of this sign, we can’t use projected textures.

15. And place the other green bar between these points on the gutters:

When the red and green bars are placed correctly, the blue axis should be vertical.

16. Turn the model display back on - the origins and axes match, but the scale relative to the model is incorrect.

17. To scale the photo, hover over any axis. The cursor changes to a double arrow.

18. Click and drag on an axis to fix the model to the photo. Keep in mind that the farther your mouse is from the origin, the more finely you can adjust the scale. To perfect the alignment between photo and model, you can go back and forth between placing the origin and adjusting the scale.

19. Right-click on the photo and choose Done. (Or you can click anywhere outside the photo.) If you don’t like your results and want to adjust the bars again, you can right-click on the picture and choose Edit Matched Photo.

20. As an aside, open the Styles window (Window / Styles). Click the Edit tab, then click the last icon at the top of the Edit tab (Modeling settings). At the bottom of this window are two sliders you can use to adjust the opacity of the Match Photo image: one for the foreground (what appears on the model faces)

NOTE: Wondering how this model was made? With a simple Follow Me operation. In the picture below, the gear shape lying flat is the Follow Me path, and the vertical shape is the extruded face.

3. Place a section plane at the very bottom, copy it to the top, and enter 10/ (or whatever number you like) to evenly space planes in between.

4. Erase the top and bottom section planes.

5. Right-click on the top section plane and choose Create Group from Slice, then erase the plane. Repeat for each plane, one at a time. (It’s easiest to keep the Eraser tool active during this entire step.)

6. Select everything and Explode the groups (this might take a few seconds).

7. Now pick some colors and paint the stripes. In this example, the non-black colors are slightly translucent.

8. Next we’ll create rotated vertical stripes on the same vase. Start a new file and insert the same “wavy vase” model. Don’t forget to explode it.

8. Next, remove the gradient border. Now the texture over the background is uniform, with no fade at the corners.

9. Finally, remove the grain underlay. Now just the background and objects appear.

10. Now we’ll build the style back up. Click the “plus” sign.

11. Open the grain image you saved, whose default name is “Cursive_tile03.” Name the watermark “Grain underlay,” and click Background so it will become an underlay. Then click Next.

12. Set the blend to your liking between Background and Image. The model updates while you’re changing these settings, so you can see how it will turn out. Click Next.

13. This image should be Tiled, and the Scale should be large enough that the grain can easily be seen. Then click Finish.

15. Because the view was not saved in any scene, you can view any part of the house, such as the patio, and check out the shadows that appear at various times of day and year.

16. Shadows also appear inside the house.Use the walk-through tools to make your way inside, and click the scene tabs to see how the shadows pass through the rooms.

NOTE: You may have already noticed, but shadows can cause your model to move slowly. This is because SketchUp needs to recalculate shadows every time you orbit or zoom or walk. If shadows are slowing you down, turn them off, then turn them back on when you have the view you want.

17. Now we’ll add fog to the scenes. Orbit back to an outside view.

18. Open the Fog window (Window / Fog), check Display Fog, and set the fog so that some of the model is obscured.

NOTE: Fog settings are covered in the next section.

4. Erase the roadway curves.5. Though it is not necessary for this simple model, the

Text tool is handy for checking elevations. First, Explode the group. Then activate Text and click any point along a contour. The default text is the point’s coordinates, the last of which is the point’s elevation. Any point on the same contour should have the same elevation.

6. To create a bridge, draw lines between two sets of intersection points, all of which should have the same elevation.

7. Erase any extra lines, and apply colors if you want. Now you have a roadway over hilly terrain, with a bridge crossing the lake.

StampThis exercises uses the copy of the model you created earlier.1. This tool requires one or more 2D or 3D objects; you

cannot select lines or curves. So add two lines between the open ends of the roadway.

2. Click Stamp (Tools / Sandbox / Stamp).

3. Click the roadway face. A red offset line appears around the roadway face, and the offset distance is listed in the Offset field. This is like the area of influence of the Smoove circle - it shows the area around the stamped object that will be added or removed from the TIN.

5. Erase the four edges needed to remove these faces, to produce a single, watertight volume.

6. Erase the section plane as well, and close the component. Now it is solid.

7. Select the entire board and make it into a component as well. Nothing extra needs to be done to make this component solid (it’s just a box).

8. Move the cutter against the board so that the “handle” is flush with the end of the board. Leave the cutter component selected.

9. Activate Trim, and the cutting object doesn’t have to selected because it already is selected. So click the object to be cut - the board.

10. The board is cut but the cutting tool is still intact (and is still a component). Note also that the trimmed portions of the board have the corresponding materials from the cutting tool. Move the cutting tool to the other end of the board and rotate it to face the board.

11. Move the cutting tool to be flush with the board.

2. Either stay in X-Ray view, or hide some walls, to make it easy to place this toilet above its symbol on the floor plan.

3. Next, turn off X-Ray view and bring in the window, placing it near the floor in the dining room. Go back to X-Ray view, and move the window above the window symbol on the plan.

4. Move the window up into place. Note that it only cuts through one side of the wall.

Depending on how thick you made your wall, the window is probably not visible from the other side of the wall.

5. If you need to push the window through to the other side, edit the component, select everything inside, and activate Scale. Use the drag handle shown . . .

25. Drag the handle in the red direction and stretch the table to the other end of the room. While you are scaling, the entire model seems to elongate. . .

26. . . . but as soon as you release the drag handle, the chairs return to normal, and a few more chairs are added to accommodate the new length.

27. Scale the table in the green direction too, for a large, square table with lots of chairs. Sang is ready for entertaining.

28. This DC also has Interact capability. Activate Interact and move the cursor over the component - you can only interact with the chairs.

29. Click a few chairs, and they disappear.

30. To bring them back, Scale the table again. Start to scale it either in the red or green direction (don’t click the end the scale) . . .

31. . . . and enter 1 for the scale value.

8. Click the preview to see if we can fix some of the segmentation. For example where shown below, the curves between the top and bottom aren’t distributed uniformly.

9. Drag a few endpoints of these segmentation curves so that the segmentation looks better.

10. Click twice in blank space to complete the model.

11. This tool works with just a single contour as well. For another example, that shows the difference between lofting methods, draw a circle on the ground, with a stepped path.
