• Henry Hudson from Netherlands sailed to present day New York & called it New Netherland

• The Dutch set up colonies for gold and furs

• Peter Minuit was the governor

• Bought Manhattan from the Indians

How did they try to get settlers to come?

1. Offered religious freedom2. Bring 50 settlers and get large plot of land

(called patroons3. If not, get enough land for yourself

• The colony was not as successful as the Dutch had hoped

• The Dutch neglected the colony• The English felt the area belonged to them

because John Cabot had claimed the area for England in 1497

New Netherland becomes New York

• The King of England gives the land to his brother, the Duke of York

• The English warships arrive and the colonists surrendered

• It is renamed to New York

• The name comes from island of Jersey in the English Channel

Who is William Penn?

• William Penn was a Quaker that the King Charles II owed a lot of money to.

• The King paid Penn with land in America

• He called the land “Sylvania” (which is Latin for “woodland”)

• Penn referred to his colony as a “Holy Experiment”

• His goal was to establish a colony ruled by “brotherly love”

• Religious freedom to all who believed in one God

• Became the most prosperous colony• The capital was Philadelphia (city of brotherly
