What is Anatomy and Physiology?
The word anatomy is derived from the Greek ana, meaning “apart”, and tome, meaning “a
cutting”. Together they mean “dissection”, which began when Greeks would dissect cadavers to
learn more about their structure.
Anatomy – is the study of structures of the body and the relationship among structures.
What is Anatomy and Physiology?
On the other hand, the word physiology is derived from the Greek physis, meaning “nature” and
logos, meaning “study of”.
Physiology – is the study of functions of the parts of the body
Physiology is dependent on anatomy because a body part is able to perform a specific functiondo to the part’s specific Structure.

EX.
The walls of the air sacs in the lungs are very thin allowing rapid movement of
oxygen into the blood.
What is Anatomy and Physiology?
It is not surprising that most terms in anatomy and physiology have Greek and
Latin origins.
Hippocrates (c. 460-377 B.C.) was a Greek physician and known as the “Father of
Medicine”.

What is Anatomy and Physiology?
An English physician named William Harvey (1578-1657) became known as the
“Father of Anatomy” when he was able to correctly describe the structure of the
heart and blood vessels, as well as circulation of the blood, for the first time.

Structure/FunctionLab
Make a structure that functions in such a way to carry ALL EIGHT paper clips from one end of the
room to the other.
The structure must touch the wall at the other end of the room.
MATERIALS
1 8x11 sheet of paper
8 small paper clips
4” of tape
1 pencil

2.
a. The arm is defined as being from the elbow to the shoulder.
b. The stomach is a pouch where food is digested located underneath the left breast, lateral to the sternum

d. The “funny bone” is actually the ulnarnerve, which, when hit, causes tingling down the length of the forearm.

The skin (integument) is the largest organ of the body with a total surface area of
about 1.9 square meters (20 square feet) for an average person. The skin also
weighs about 2.7 kilograms or 5.6 pounds
Student Lab:Directional Terminology
• The number 1 should be labeled “right”
• The number 2 should be labeled “left”
