Although track is

not the athlete’s favorite

sport to compete in, he

has high hopes for his

future in the

sport. Cooper said that

he plans to break the re-

cord for 100 meter dash

once more and set a new

number for the 200 me-

ter dash as well. He also

said that he sees himself

running track all the way

to his senior year of col-

ting a scholarship off of

it. This may only be

Trenton’s first year run-

ning track, but he has

already accomplished so

much doing it.

If you want to catch

some of the beginning of

this rising track star,

you can find him running

Trenton Breaks School Record

By Alyssa Jamerson

Central Press

Up until April 4,

2017, Austin Allen has

held the seventh grade

record for the 100 meter

dash at our school, Cen-

tral Junior High

School. Austin Allen had

the challenging record

set at 12.11 seconds, but

little did he know that

Trenton Cooper would

come to take his title.

Recently, the

CJHS track team hauled

their talent to the Har-

risburg track field. Tren-

ton Cooper took to the

track when the 100 meter

dash was about to be-

gin. At the sound of the

gunshot, Cooper hustled

to the finish to be

awarded with first place,

and the new record for

the seventh

grade 100 me-

ter dash at his

school. The

new record is

now set at

11.97 sec-

onds. When

asked how he

felt when he

finished the

race, Trenton

described the

event as amazing.

Thirteen year old

Trenton Cooper isn’t just

a boy with long legs that

can pick up speed. He

puts in the extra practice

to be the best he can

be. While Cooper does

work for the number one

title, it’s not all for him-

self, his mom is always on

his mind. I asked Tren-

ton what strategies he

uses to run faster ex-

pecting an answer that

had something to do with

lucky socks or a “pre-

game ritual”, but instead

he said, “my

mom.” Cooper said that

he feels he needs to re-

pay his mother for all she

does for him, and that he

does that by making her

it’s kind of like playing Terraria. Star-

bound is a 2D style game and you can

only go left and right. There are por-

tals in the game that lead you to a dun-

geon. In the first world you spawn in,

but you need 20 core fragments to get

in. Don’t worry, they're easy to find.

Dungeons have loot, which can be used

by you to help you survive this evil

place. Also, you have a quest line and

side quests, which leads to mini bosses

and bosses you have to fight.

In my opinion it’s a really good

game!

Have you ever heard of a game

called StarBound!? If you haven’t I feal

sorry for you. If you have, and you

don't like…..BALDERDASH! Just so you

know, this is my opinion and it’s MY arti-

cle. Alright let’s get started!

StarBound takes place on

Earth, but way in the future. There are

seven characters you can chose from,

the Apex, Avian, Floran, Glitch, Human,

Hylotl, Novakid. It starts out as the

day of your character’s gradua-

tion of being and is titled the

Protector. What a Protector is,

is a protector of the universe.

While walking up to the stage

during graduation, an old man

starts to talk about their greatest

creation, The Manipulator! When the

old man is about to finish is speech,

suddenly a giant Octopus attacks (don’t

worry you’ll get to fight it later on in

the game) and takes over Earth. While

the attack happens you are to grab the

Manipulator and escape Earth on your

ship. Bad thing is you can’t go far out in

the universe, because your ship was

damaged and you are the only one who

survived the

attack.

the songs, my favorite song is Lion.

2008, they released their debut album,

Swan Songs. Then on November 10,

2009, their live CD/DVD Desperate

Hollywood Undead has 5 albums

altogether: Day of the Dead, Notes

extra albums such as live concert al-

The band members include

Danny, Johnny 3 Tears, Da Kurlzz, J-

Those are not their real names. When

they began the band. they had this

other member. His name was Deuce. He

left the band and Hollywood Undead

by Wu-Tang Clan. In 2013, he was voted

as one of XXL's freshmen of the year

alongside notable rapper Schoolboy Q.

Logic is an amazing and unique

rapper, and I do recommend any of his

songs to everybody who likes hip hop

music.

1963 there has been an opening tee

The Masters is my favorite

tournament of the year. It brings in

hundreds of thousands of fans to

watch the tournament. I think that

the masters is very special, because

of all the past winners, and the

many great traditions that go along

with the tournament.

The Masters is a PGA tour

golf tournament. The Masters is

one of four major championships

throughout the year. It is the most

anticipated golf tournament of the

year, as it brings in hundreds of

great professionals players.

The tournament has not always

been known as “The Masters”, be-

fore 1939 it was called the

“Augusta National Invitational”.

Horton Smith won the first Augusta

National Invitational. The Masters

was started by Clifford Roberts

and Bobby Jones.

The tournament is

played at Augusta

National Golf Club,

and it is arguably

the best course in

the world. Alister

MacKenzie is a golf

course architect who built Augusta

National, and many other famous

courses.

The players who have had

the most success at the Masters

are Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus,

Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Sam

Snead. At this tournament there

are certain invitations you have to

receive to be invited to play. The

tournament has the smallest field

of any other major with 90-100

people. There are no alternate or

qualifying events for this tourna-

ment.

different tradi-

the year because there is fun

things to do in the summer. These

are all the reasons I like sum-

mer time. It is my favorite time of

the year!

I like summer, because

there are a lot of things to do in

the summer. I like to sleep in every

day and spend the night

with my friends. My family

and I go to Holiday World

and the water park in Mt.

Vernon. I also get to see

my cousins and go swimming

in the summertime. An-

other thing I like to do in

the summer is going to

Fairmount Park with my grandpa and

grandma and my cousin, Cody. There

is so much to do in the summer!

I especially like sum-

mer, because I don’t

have to get up early

for school every day. I

can’t wait till summer

vacation, it is less than

20 days away!

Summer time is

my favorite time of

Page 4 Volume 5, Issue 11

What is your favorite sea-

son? There are four seasons they

are summer, winter, fall, and spring.

My favorite season is spring. Spring

started on March 21st. Spring is in

between winter and summer.

When Spring starts the

time changes and the sun is out

longer. During spring you get a lot

of rain so the flowers start to

bloom and the grass grows faster

and becomes a very pretty green.

The plants start to grow faster,

because they get a lot of rain and

the sun is out so they get a lot of

sun.

One thing cool about spring

that you might not know is that

spring is a symbol of rebirth. The

first day of spring actually is called

the Vernal Equinox. Its called this

because Vernal is Latin and means

“spring”, and Equinox is Latin and it

means “Equal Days”. Spring is when

the Earth is starting to tilt towards

the sun and that is why it starts to

get warmer outside. There are some

holidays in Spring like Easter, April

Fools Day, Earth Day, and Mother's

Day. You also have spring break,

which is one of my favorite parts

about spring.

Tinley

Smith said her

favorite thing

was going

camping and

fishing. Jas-

mine Mize said

her favorite

thing to do in

spring is going

fishing with

her dad and spending time with her

nephews.

In the spring, you get to

hangout outside, because the

weather is nice. Also the flowers

start to bloom so the ground looks

pretty. Make sure to get outside

before the weather changes.

Faith and Dylan have been together for one month. Their

the park. They each said that their favorite thing about each

other is each other’s personality.

Faith loves everything about Dylan. Dylan likes everything about

Faith except when her hair isn't braided correctly.

ven loved all her toys, so it was

worth it. Especially for me seeing

her so happy.

It’s so hard to believe that

Raven is already one. It seems like

it was yesterday when I got the call

that she was born. At 8 months,

Raven was already walking. She

knew how to stand up on her own

without any help from objects or

people. Raven also gets quite angry

when you try and help her. You can

say she is very independent already.

I can’t wait to see what kind of per-

son she becomes.

On April 7, 2016, my baby

sister, Raven Skye Dawes, was born.

She was born at 7:06 pm on a

Thursday night. At the time, my

sister, Gracie, and I were living in

Rolla, Missouri. That’s a little over 3

hours away from Murphysboro,

which is where my dad and stepmom

live. Gracie and I didn’t get to meet

Raven until a month after she was

born. It was a little

heartbreaking to be hon-

est.

Raven’s birthday

party was held over the

weekend of April 7-April

9, 2017. Gracie and I

were able to spend the

weekend with our dad for

Raven’s first birthday.

The setup was crazy.

First, Gracie and I had to

go to softball practice 30

minutes away for 2 hours.

Practice started an hour and a half

before. We had to leave in the mid-

dle of practice so that we could get

there and shower before the guests

arrived.

My dad is a big guy, covered

in tattoos. He also has a motorcycle

and wears a lot of leather. His

friends are the exact same way.

Imagine this, a group of big, "scary”

bikers come up to

your house with

pink, sparkly Minnie

Mouse toys. I mean,

you can’t help but to

laugh. Here’s these

big guys with little

girl toys! It was hi-

larious! They nor-

view them as some-

want to mess with.

Kentucky basketball is a

great sport to watch. This year

they finished the season 27-9 and

13-5 in the SEC (Southeastern Con-

ference).

The SEC is a con-

ference tournament in

basketball. It’s a single

elimination tournament

that includes all league

schools, which is based on

the team's season re-

cords. The winner of this tourna-

ment receives the automatic bid to

the NCAA men’s basketball tourna-

ment. The Kentucky Wildcats won

this tournament.

consecutive season at

pacitate our opponents.

Even though dodgeball is a

competitive sport, it is just a game.

Next time you play dodgeball, think

that it is just a game, not a way to

injure your opponents.

Dodgeball, the game we all

love so much, is actually considered

a sport.

It was invented in Africa

over 200 years ago. The Africans

used rocks and putrefied matter as

the ball, instead of soft balls, to

throw at the other team, while de-

fending their own teammates. At

that time dodgeball was considered

a deadly game. They use the game

of dodgeball as an intense workout

for the tribe. Each member of the

team would try to hit their oppo-

nent to seriously injure or kill them.

Once hit, they would throw more

rocks at the opponent. It was the

other team members’ responsibility

to protect the injured team mem-

ber. This game would teach the

tribesmen to work together against

other tribes.

Dodgeball is considered a

competitive sport in some schools,

colleges, and universities. The rules

we sue now for dodgeball are very

different. Now, once you are hit,

you have to sit out until one of your

teammates catch a ball and let you

back in. We set the soft balls in a

line, evenly spread out, in the mid-

dle of the gym

and wait for the

whistle. Once the

whistle is blown,

the members of

each team run to

the line and get

as many soft

balls as they can

for themselves

and their team-

mates. Then they try to hit the op-

ponent until he or she is out. We do

and push for faster-acting insulin,

better blood glucose sensing and AP

systems that, as closely as possible,

duplicate the operations of a normal

pancreas.

As some of us know, manag-

ing type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a never-

ending, time consuming chore be-

cause the body often denies the

most careful efforts to keep your

blood sugar level normal. Take sleep

for example, sleeping can often be

dangerous when hypoglycemia (low

blood sugar) occurs. Simply eating a

sandwich can require a large dose of

insulin to keep hyperglycemia (high

blood sugar) occurring and to keep

you from going into a diabetic coma.

Artificial pancreas (AP) systems are

going to help maintain these worries

and problems.

Artificial pancreas systems

will control blood sugar management

greatly shortening T1D risks. These

systems will monitor glucose (sugar)

levels 24/7, automatically give you

the right amount of insulin, and sta-

bilize blood sugar hormones at the

right time. The system will link to a

continuous glucose monitor

(CGM) sensor and an insulin pump

to regulate your blood sugar and

manage insulin delivery.

JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes

Research Foundation) states,

“Following the launch of our

Artificial Pancreas Project in

2006, our first steps were to

support the development of

continuous glucose monitors

and increasingly sophisticated

insulin pumps.” They continue

You've probably heard of tattoos, but have you heard of henna tattoos? First of all, henna is a plant that

can be used to make a paste to dye your hair or skin, but only temporarily.

For centuries, henna has been used as art, usually on the skin, but also as a hair dye. Henna is used by In-

dian women to celebrate their creativity, though it is also traced all the way back to ancient Egypt. Henna is used

quite a bit on brides in India but sometimes the grooms get very elaborate designs as well. Henna art is popular in

many places like Africa, India, the Middle East and even the United States. Though the origin of henna is not

known, we can have an idea of where they could have started at.

Henna tattoos are come in many different sizes, variations, and can go anywhere from on your feet to on

your face! They are typically applied on people’s hands, feet, backs, and arms. On your hands or feet the design

will most likely be smaller, but they can still be very intricate. The design may be a very large on your back, con-

sidering there is much more space. There are also different colors of henna, but the normal is just the plain old

natural henna, but beware of the so called black henna. Black henna is said to have

chemical additives that can harm your skin. Henna usually is applied to the skin like a

paste, then after a while it should start drying and peeling off. Finally, it will nor-

mally stain the skin as an orange color and after that it will continue to darken until

a certain point. Now if you want it to last longer, you should try not to wash the area

it was applied to, it might also help if you don’t swim with it. Typically, you can buy

henna kits to apply the tattoos yourself, but if you do not feel comfortable doing

that, you should be able to find a place where someone can do it for you.

I believe henna tattoos are pretty interesting and since they are only tem-

porary, you do not have to worry about being stuck with them forever!

What is your favorite part about spring break? There can be a lot of exciting things about spring

break whether you're going somewhere or not. Some people don't have any plans, but still have fun. Spring

break can be a time for family, friends, and fun.

Spring break happens to fall on the same week as Easter every year. For some of these people

that have no plans, they will most likely celebrate Easter. There are so many things you could go and do

during this time. I know that some people like to go on vacations at this time. Then there are some people

who just like to hang out with their friends. I didn’t have any plans, so I mostly hung out with friends and

spent time with family.

Tinley Smith said she went camping, fishing, and spent time with family. Alex Corzine said that

she liked that there wasn't school and she got to hang out with friends. Even

though she didn’t do it this year, her favorite thing to do on spring break is going

on a vacation.

Different people like to do different things on their spring break. I hope

you all had a lot of fun this year on your time off.

Page 11: Central Press...CJHS track team hauled their talent to the Har-risburg track field. Tren-ton Cooper took to the track when the 100 meter dash was about to be-gin. At the sound of the

927-6280. Anything will be much appreci-

ated. Don’t forget to come out to the Central

Jr. High School on April 29th to help Henry.

Henry Vaughn is a really cool guy

that loves the kids that he gets to see eve-

ryday. Henry has been driving school buses

for several years. We just wanted to help

him out a little bit during this difficult time.

Thank you for all the people that stepped up

to help us achieve our goals so far. Henry

has went through some rough things these

last couple of weeks, so please come help

once again f you can. Don’t forget to mark

your calendar for Friday, April 29, 2017, for

the mostaccioli dinner

and the quarter ac-

tion. Hope to see you

there!

Recently, Henry Vaughn has faced

a tragedy. Henry’s house caught on fire on

March 28th. His wife, Gay Vaughn, passed

away in the fire. At the time of the fire,

Henry was driving the West Frankfort track

team to a track field out of town. The very

next day he went to work, because he loves

the kids so much that he knew that they

would cheer him up and get his mind off of

the situation.

Henry is a really good guy, so when

I heard about what had happened I decided

to do something to help. I got with my

friend's Kim Martin and Megan Drennon. We

went to talk to Mr. Cass, the principal at

CJHS, to see what we could do to help. Mr.

Cass allowed us to do a fundraiser at CJHS.

Once we got the ok, the girls and I went to

talk to Mr. Overturf about paying a dollar to

get out of running the mile. He was okay

with it, and so we added more ideas to the

fundraiser. We decided to call the fundrais-

ing day, “Lazy Day”.

“Lazy Day” became a day where you

could pay a dollar and get out of the mile,

wear a hat, wear pajamas, or/and get in a

raffle for two homework passes. Just on

that Wednesday we raised $430.00. Olivia

Clark and Tinley Smith are the two that won

the homework passes from the raffle. After

our Lazy Day, we had people who just wanted

to donate to Henry and now we have raised

$462.00 in all.

If you didn’t get a chance to donate

and would like to, the Illinois Central School

Bus Company is doing a fundraiser on April

29, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. at Central Jr. High

School. Their slogan is “Come out and help us

help Henry!” They will be having a mostac-

cioli dinner catered by Bella’s. There will also

be a quarter action at 7:30p.m. and Brent

Stroud Karaoke and DJ Show will be the

entertainment. I know that they would

really like to have a

lot of people to come

and have a fun time

to help Henry out. If

you would like to

donate anything to

the auction you can

contact Heidi at 618-

923-1528, Cyndi at

618-927-0302, or you

Helping Henry By Tinley Smith

Lucas? Louis? Larry? Linus? Lucca? Leroy? Lenon? Lance! Welcome to the world Lance

Decker Stowers! Baby Lance is the fifth addition to the Stowers family, and he was born on

April 7th at 4:46 p.m. He was 21 inches long and 8 pounds, 13.1 ounces. The students and staff

here at CJHS were eagerly anticipating the arrival of Baby Stowers.

The day before she had Lance, Mrs. Stowers was out cleaning the highway with the

Beta Club. A lot of people expected that she would go into labor on the side of the road, but

luckily she did not. Also, Mrs. Stowers will be going to Disney in June when Beta heads to the

National Convention. Baby Lance is not coming with her right now, but she said plans can always

change.

Before his birth, the students of CJHS would try to guess the name of Mrs. Stowers’

baby, but she would not tell us until after he was born. She would always reply with “Baby Stowers”. Speaking of names,

Lance’s name could have been Lance Dixon or Decker Matthew, but they decided on Lance Decker.

Mrs. Stowers said that she is perfectly happy with the three boys she has now, so there will probably not be any

more babies. When asked if she wanted Lance to be a boy she said that she loves her three boys and all she wanted was a

healthy baby. Thankfully, that is what the Stowers family got.

The students and staff of CJHS wishes the best for Baby Lance and the Stowers family. This whole year many

students have been excited and anticipating the arrival of Baby Stowers. Unfortunately, Mrs. Stowers will be on mater-

nity leave for the rest of the year. She said she will be working with incoming seventh graders, but will not be teaching in

her classroom. Mrs. Stowers will be missed greatly, but we are happy that she is at home with her family and the new

baby. So, welcome to the world Lance Decker Stowers!

Welcome Lance Stowers!
