Champion Victorian Sire for the past two seasons, Bel Esprit is one of the most exciting stallions in the country, registering stakes winners No. 7 and 8 during January, along with the G2 Australia Day Stakes via unbeaten filly Black Caviar. Last month I ‘crossed the ditch’ to attend the New Zealand National

Yearling Sales and marveled at the sheer vibrancy of an industry that cops its fair share of bumps and bruises.

You have to take your hat off to the Kiwis: they market their horses better than anyone – regardless of perceived bloodstock strength – and the hospitality is first class.

Indeed, catching the flight home leaves you thinking that a few more days at Karaka and you too would start taking up the manta “New Zealand breeds the best horses in the world!”

However, bells and whistles aside, the best result to come out of Karaka was the bottom line.

From day one averages continued to rise and remained in that holding pattern for the week. Expectations are always

high at yearling sales (you wouldn’t be in this industry if you didn’t dream!) but Karaka’s final figures were much, much better than anticipated.

Where to from here? The Inglis Melbourne Premier is about to kick off and will be followed up by the Adelaide Magic Millions and the QTIS 600 on the Gold Coast.

Can we expect that the parting of the clouds in the land of the long white cloud will see similar sunshine in Australia? Let’s put it this way, the quality of catalogues in Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast would indicate that purse strings will loosen for the athletic types, while anything below par should probably stay at home.

Which is basically the way it should be: on either side of the Tasman.

Make sure you check out the Track To Track website: www.tracktotrack.com particularly the video on Artificial Insemination for thoroughbreds.

A highly emotive issue which is rapidly drawing battle lines, the video – produced by Thorough Media Solutions – was very balanced, speaking to protagonists on both sides of the fence, plus some ‘swinging votes’.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about this topic in the near future.

It was a toss up in terms of who to single out for Horse

of the Month honours, but with the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling

Sale looming, one of its star graduates in Black Caviar got the nod.

Plucked from the Oaklands Junction sale ring two years ago, for the princely sum of $210,000, she is one of eight stakes

winners to evolve from that ‘class’ and – potentially – may end up dux despite the Group One winning deeds of Starspangledbanner. The big difference between the two is that Black Caviar has yet to taste defeat in five starts and, for that matter, hasn’t looked like getting beaten.Sadly, she was injured two days prior to the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley for which she was raging hot favourite in a field full of winners at racing’s most elite levels. Now we’ll just have to wait for the spring …

>>

ACCORDING TO Moody Racing’s foreman, Jeff O’Connor, Black Caviar took to stable life from day one and has always been an

“excellent (track)worker”.

Although her track toil gave some indication as to Black Caviar’s promise, Jeff said it wasn’t until the filly stepped out in a

trial at Cranbourne in March last year that gave Team Moody and inkling to just how good this horse was.

(In fact, it was some morning for the stable with recent stakes winner Set For Fame – another Melbourne Prem purchase [$75,000] and part owned by Jeff – won her first trial some 20 minutes later).

Page 12: track To Track 58

12

Less than three weeks later, Black Caviar contested a 1000m event at Flemington and won by a whopping five lengths: the black cat was literally out of the bag now.

Given a crack at the Black Sapphire Stakes-LR on 18 May, this time Black Caviar won by six panels and as if that wasn’t enough, the second horse Demerit has since won a Guineas Prelude-G3 and was beaten just over a length in the Coolmore Classic-G1, while third placegetter, Carrara, would win four of his next starts – all at stakes level – including the Bill Stutt Stakes-G2 before finishing second to Starspangledbanner in the Caulfield Guineas.

Out for four months, Black Caviar resumed in the Arrow Training Services Plate-LR at Moonee Valley and was again a comfortable winner before shaping up for the VRC Danehill Stakes-G2 at Flemington in early September.

Stumbling at the start, Black Caviar quickly recovered to record her fourth win on the trot – defeating stablemate and subsequent Lightning Stakes-G1 runnerup Wanted – but a torn chest muscle from the near fall put paid to further spring aspirations.

This time Black Caviar was on the sidelines for 20 weeks, during which time she recuperated and

www.tracktotrack.com

undertook some schooling in the barriers. Hardly a barrier rogue – well, not in the general sense – her major problem, says Jeff, is “she tries to get out of them (barriers) too fast”.

Suitably warned, a barrier blanket was employed on her return, this time in the MVRC Australia Day Stakes-G2 on 22 January. This was Black Caviar’s first tilt at weight for age and although the field was small, the filly was her usual dominant self winning by two lengths from 6-time black type winner Here de Angels, spring stakes winner La Rocket and Standish-G3 hero (and previous Horse of the Month) Royal Ida.

Black Caviar was well and truly

EVOLUTION 11THE WORLD’S MOST AFFORDABLE, DEPENDABLE AND DURABLE HORSE EXERCISE MACHINE

BLACK CAVIAR is by the Eliza Park based stallion, Bel Esprit, Victoria’s Champion Sire for the past two seasons and well on his way to notching up a treble.

A brilliant 2YO who won his first five starts including the Blue Diamond Stakes-G1, Bel Esprit went on to capture the Doomben 10,000-G1 at three before retiring to stud.

A $9,000 yearling purchase in his own right (eventually winning over $2 million in stakes), Bel Esprit has been well

sought out since heading to Eliza Park, covering 1273 mares in seven seasons, including a then record 266 in 2007 (his harem tally was 251 last spring, second only to Fastnet Rock).

With his oldest runners now five year olds, Bel Esprit notched up his 140th individual winner in early February and his headliners – apart from Black Caviar of course – include Group One winner Bel Mer, Belcentra, Gabbidon, Vivacious Spirit, Mooring and 2010 stakes winners Silver Bullion and Beltrois.

poised to rattle and roll in the William Reid but did a suspensory on the Thursday prior to the race and now won’t be back until at least the spring.

The Reid would certainly have been a huge milestone: the field consisted of eventual winner Turffontein (who had won the Sir Rupert Clarke-G1 in the spring), Nicconi and Sniper’s Bullet – Group One winners at their previous starts – Caulfield Cup winner Master O’Reilly, Mentality (3-time Group

One winner), Light Fantastic (Australian Guineas-G1), Group Two winner Shellscrape plus Group One runnerup and stablemate Wanted.

Victory would surely have vaulted Black Caviar into superstar status but trainer Peter Moody is confident she’ll come back just as good as ever.

Despite her setback, the aura remains and for Black Caviar the world remains her oyster … or should we say, her roe to hoe!

www.tracktotrack.com 13

No matter what happens to Black Caviar, nothing will depreciate her residual value as a broodmare. There's only upside.

It appears that applies to relations as well with her family one of the hottest in the Australian Stud Book: Black Caviar’s dam – Helsinge – was unraced but she is a half sister to both Group One winner Magnus (who also stands at Eliza Park, in conjunction with Yallambee Stud) and Darley’s exciting sprinter, Wilander (4 wins including MRC Schillaci Stakes-G2).

Incidentally, Helsinge is by Desert Sun – Eliza Park’s foundation stallion – who was recently retired from stud duties after producing 450 winners including the immortal Sunline.

Black Caviar’s granddam, Scandinavia was a dual Group winner and four times Group One placed and is, in turn, a half sister to 10 winners including stakes winners Russian Tea Room, Midnight Sun and Frosty The Snowman.

Their dam, Song of Norway – who died in January – is out of the Danish mare, Love Song who was imported to Australia by David Hains.

A few years prior to Love Song, Hains imported another mare from Europe called Ada Hunter who would go on to produce a horse called Kingston Town.

As luck would have it, Hains raced Kingston Town after he was passed in at the 1978 equivalent to the Melbourne Premier … for $5,000 off a reserve of $8,000!

TELL THE TALE

P R E M I E R G R A D U A T E S

THERE IS LITTLE question that the best form of marketing for any yearling sale is its

graduates.

As a consequence, statistics are often bent, twisted and distorted beyond recognition to promote sales and while it’s not difficult to suss out why, you do wonder just how much bearing does a week’s accommodation at a sales complex have on a racehorse’s prowess?

That said, the Inglis Melbourne Premier always has an incredible

strike rate with its graduates … a fact borne out in the week leading up to the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on 13 February, one of Australasian racing’s most memorable sprints.

Earlier in the week we heard that one of the highly rated nominees – Starspangledbanner – was giving the William Reid a flick pass.

Starpangledbanner was the 3YO star of last spring, winning four from five including the MRC Caulfield Guineas-G1. The son of Choisir was sold for $120,000 at the 2008 Melbourne Premier.

With his omission, the unbeaten filly Black Caviar firmed into even tighter favouritism before doing a suspensory at trackwork and scratching on the Thursday. Black Caviar was sold at the 2008 Prem too – for $210,000.

Eventually, when the field of eight lined up on Saturday, only one Premier grad remained … Turffontein, the Johannesburg 5YO whom Anthony Cummings had snatched for just $70,000 at the 2006 Premier.

Sure enough, Turffontein lobs, making it a Group One pair after his victory in the Sir Rupert Clarke last spring.

Despite Swettenham’s purchase, Kaphero will remain with Leon Corstens and be targeted at the Schillaci Stakes-G2 at Caulfield on 11 October before a tilt at the Lightning-G1 and Oakleigh Plate-G1 in the autumn.

Villager ‘Walter’ wouldn’t “hesitate sending a bigger mare needing some speed over her” and reckons he “would be a great horse to breed to at about $5,000-$6,000”.

‘bradjm’ concurred, saying $5,000 to $6,000 for a Group One winning son of Danzero would be a fair and reasonable price.”

Five to six grand? ‘Bomba’ – aka Darryl Kerrigan – told ‘Walter’ and ‘bradjm’ they were “dreaming” but also asked why Kaphero would have to win a Group One to be a stallion?

“Kaphero could go to stud and show up a lot of stallions … a good 2YO that went wayward but is now a genuine, honest racehorse. I do hope he gets a good chance …”

With the way the Corstens stable is firing at the moment and as Swettenham is one of Victoria’s ‘go ahead’ studs, it’s fairly safe say ‘Bomba’

that you’re prayers will be answered.

In a press release, Swettenham Stud’s owner Adam Sangster said he was thrilled to be able to purchase the Danzero sprinter.

“It’s great to know that Kaphero is coming back to Swettenham,” Sangster said. “We bred him from one of our most successful families. Swettenham Stud has purchased three quarters of Kaphero, while his long time owners will retain the other quarter for his future stud duties.”

Word is that Kaphero will stand at around $15,000 inc. GST. Naturally, if he comes out and wins the Oakleigh and Lightning, that figure could change. The astute may well choose to phone Ian Rimington at Swettenham on 0419 887 184 before the Autumn!

TELL THE TALETELL THE TALE

P R E M I E R G R A D U A T E S

It was certainly timely with the 2010 Melbourne

Premier mere weeks away.

Still, there’s a bit of pressure this time around as it’s the first real test of the market since the New Zealand Nationals at the start of February … a sales series that exceeded all expectations.

Inglis will have done its darndest to get everyone into town for the week and while a number of players will be missing, the catalogue appears to have tightened up a fair bit with Session 1 entries down to 554 from 613 last year.

Yes, there’s a bit of catching up to do after the sale dropped from a record high average of $84,494 in 2008 to $55,370 last year but the quality – on paper anyway – is certainly present.

All up there are 78 yearlings from stakes winning mares – seven of them Group One winners – and

74 youngsters that are either half, three quarter or full relations to stakes winners. And 10 of the 74 are Group One winners, most notably Turffontein (Lot 432).

Inglis chief, Mark Webster, can quickly roll with further figures, claming that the Premier is Australia’s “growth sale”.

“Premier graduates won 35 stakes races in Australia last season, but the 2009-10 crop are on target to totally eclipse that mark, with 24 stakes wins to the end of January.

“Of particular pride this season are the performances of the Premier 3YO crop.

“Set For Fame became the eighth individual Premier three-year-old to win at stakes level this season when taking the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes on Australia Day and joins star filly Black Caviar, Group One placed Carrara, Shamoline Warrior, Excuse My French, Viking Legend, It’llbefantastic and of course Starspangledbanner.”

The question is … out of the 724 entries for this year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 March, who will become the ‘banner’ horse?

Lyle is firmly of the belief that Eden awaits those who are prepared to cast a glance at opportunities in China and that the wait is almost over.

Indeed, the trickle toward the opening of Wenjiang racecourse in November 2010 should turn into a flood by 2011.

Lyle reckons a good way to book yourself a pozzie on the Ark is by attending the Chengdu International Equine Trade Show this June.

“China is, without question, horse racing’s most anticipated frontier. With over 1.4 billion people – the world’s largest and most populous country – the imminent commencement

LYLE PLUMB IS one of life’s great ‘networkers’. And while that, in current parlance, might

conjure a view that Lyle is more style than substance, nothing could be further from the truth.

Lyle has spent his entire career involved with horses. He was a jockey – admittedly many kilos ago but still good enough to land international contracts … he was a trainer … he was a studmaster … he was a pre-trainer … he is a bloodstock agent … he is an entrepreneur … and if you’re a who’s who in the thoroughbred zoo, chances are he knows you.

of horse racing is seen to be a lifeline to many struggling enthusiasts,” Lyle enthuses.

“The demand for breeding stock, racehorses, feed, medical supplies and expertise in many other areas, will create opportunities never seen before. The Chinese officials are being very diligent in their approach to this introduction, and it is important that the new industry will have high standards from the beginning.

“There have been some amateur forms of racing, but as you can well imagine, there needs to be stringent controls before allowing any type of wagering in a population this size. Learning from other countries mistakes

Perhaps it’s a hangover from growing up on a glut of Kung Fu flicks, but whenever discussion turns to China’s thoroughbred industry – such as it is – I’m reminded of the movie, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’.For years there have been rumblings about the El Dorado that mainland China promises when racing (and breeding) finally gets into full stride, but prospectors are going blue in the face with the wait. However, according to Lyle Plumb, the ‘next big thing’ is just around the corner and pretty soon Chengdu won’t sound like something you order with fried rice.

will ensure a structured and well timed introduction of this exciting project.

“Equestrian clubs are springing up everywhere, to help introduce horse knowledge and acceptance amongst the people.

“Land is being provided for new projects with a view to creating a breeding industry that will rival any in the world. International Horse Forums and Trade Shows are being planned, as well as construction of some magnificent courses and venues.

“This is the main reason for my presence here: to take advantage of the new market and to try to provide skills in certain areas. My role is very broad and active, and I want to help any companies keen to gain a foothold. At present, it is not a bed of roses it is very challenging to live in a totally foreign environment … but I believe there is a great future for the industry here in China.

“It will help if you can hop on the elevator from the ground floor.”

For more information on racing in China you can Lyle a bell on 0011 86 15228859644 or email [email protected]

HORSE RACING HAS BEEN banned in the People’s Republic of China since Chairman Mao became the country’s chief steward in 1949.

One can only assume it had something to do with racing’s capitalist core, but without wishing to draw an oversimplified analogy, the thoroughbred industry has flourished offshore – largely unmolested – in Hong Kong for the past 170 years (with the exception of a couple of seasons following Japan’s invasion during WWII).

Horse racing in Hong Kong commenced in 1841 with the arrival of the British, who immediately set about draining a malarial swamp to form a racetrack at Happy Valley.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club was founded in 1884 and switched from an amateur to professional organisation in 1971. A second racecourse was opened at Sha Tin in 1978.

While we don’t have exact turnover figures on hand for the 700 odd races staged between September and June, a fair guideline is the amount of tax the Hong Kong Jockey Club forks out to government: HK$12,976 million in 2008/09, or about 6.8% of all taxes collected by the Government's Inland Revenue Department.

As a result of its not-for-profit structure, the HKJC has donated an average of one billion Hong Kong dollars every year to hundreds of charities and community projects: one of the biggest charity donors in the world.

The Club is also one of the largest employers in Hong Kong, with some 5,300 full-time and 21,000 part-time staff.

Now mathematics was never a strong point during those two days I spent at school, but if a crowd of 7 million – 95% of which are ethnic Chinese – can generate that kind of income, what will 1.4 billion people do?

mare She Wishes – and although it was outside the parameters of Neville’s budget, Lyle considered the colt the best Pentire in the sale and eventually forked out NZ$170,000 for the privilege.Suggesting that Neville send the horse to Sydney as an unraced 3YO, Lyle’s son, Ryan – an accomplished jockey in his own right – hopped on board and reported to his dad that the neddy was ‘top shelf ’.Although caught up in the EI outbreak, the Pentire – subsequently named Rangirangdoo – was sent to Chris Waller on Lyle’s recommendation. The rest, as they say in the classics, is history.Rangirangdoo has now raced on 15 occasions for eight wins and six placings including victories in the Tramway-G3 and Crystal M i l e - G 2 , a l o n g w i t h

IN A PAST LIFE, LYLE WAS a dab hand at the training caper and is still sought out by a burgeoning list of clients keen to tap into his

bloodstock selection prowess.

Just how ‘prow’ was obvious at Rosehill at the start of February when Rangirangdoo took out the $200,000 Expressway Stakes-G2 at Rosehill.Trained at Rosehill by Chris Waller, Rangirangdoo is owned by Brisbane businessman, Neville Morgan.Lyle trained his first city winner for Morgan – the applicably named, Still Friends, at Doomben in 1984 – and Neville has owned some outstanding gallopers over the years including The Grouch (multiple stakes placed), Sir Pentire (VRC St Leger) and Damigos (a dual stakes winner out of Still Friends).Early in 2006, Neville asked Lyle to head to New Zealand to buy him a Pentire at the National Sales.Lyle spied Lot 53 – from the multiple stakes placed Kenfair

a whisker second to Rock Kingdom in last October’s Epsom Handicap-G1 at Randwick.Rangirangdoo has now won over $630,000 and it’s fairly safe to assume that Neville has forgiven Lyle for overspending at Karaka!

PLUMB-ING THE EXPRESSWAY

WHAT’S IN A NAMERangirangdoo, a ditty he came up with during his time at Changi. The story goes that one of the senior officers in Changi, Adrian Curlewis, later Sir Adrian, was involved in the surf lifesaving movement before he departed for war duties and he came up with an idea to help pass the time and stay positive in the period of horrific internment.Evidently some 30 lifesavers formed a group to do beach drills and dream of surfing the waves, calling themselves the Changi Surf Club.

IT APPEARS THAT Ranirangdoo is thus monikered in remembrance of Changi prisoner of war, Charlie Taylor, who died five

years ago at the age of 86.

As Nev Morgan told the Courier Mail’s Bart Sinclair late last year, both he and Charlie (and quite a few mates) used to share a drink or three at the Burleigh Heads Surf Lifesaving Club – often culminating in a singalong. One of Charlie’s songs was called

Seems Nev Morgan was no slouch in the surfing department: raised in Towoomba, he made the trek to the Gold Coast every weekend and holiday to perform duties as a lifesaver eventually becoming Australian Beach Sprint Champion in 1978-79.Nev’s obviously slowed down a tad in the last 30 years, but 5YO Rangirangdoo still clearly has plenty of toe.

AS A CONSEQUENCE of avarice from interstate raiders and diminishing prizemoney, the

once vibrant South Australian thoroughbred industry has struggled to keep pace in recent years.

Ironically, that may well and have worked in favour of the state’s annual yearling sale showpiece, given that buyers – blokes like Mark Kavanagh and Shane Fliedner – still flock to the sale knowing they won’t have to pay a premium for quality.

After all, despite the aforementioned ‘pillaging’, South Australian breeders continually produce – with remarkable consistency – horses that more than hold their own on the national stage.

Champion mare Divine Madonna was an $82,500 purchase out of Adelaide and, after her four Group One victories, sold for $2.7 million.

The ill-fated yet incredibly gifted, Mummify, was sold out of Adelaide … so was Young Centaur … Devil Moon too … Undoubtedly was another … and Hard To Get who, at $60,000, was actually easy to get.

While, admittedly having paid his dues in South Australia, Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh is a huge fan of the Adelaide Magic Millions, having purchased Divine Madonna, Blue Diamond winner Undoubtedly and his South Australian Derby winner Hard To Get all out of his home town auction.

“This (Adelaide Magic Millions) is always a good sale where you’ll find plenty of value,” Mark enthuses. “Divine Madonna, for instance, just had that ‘look’ about her. Very athletic … and very typical of yearlings offered in Adelaide.”

Victorian trainer, Shane Fliedner, concurs. Shane snapped up Bel Esprit sprinter, Tollesprit for just $26,000 at the 2008 Adelaide sale and the 3YO has since won almost a quarter million in stakes. The Group One Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on 6 March is now definitely marked on the dance card.

“Adelaide offers you excellent value for money … it allows you to shop at the top end of the market.

“Tollesprit was a very nice walker as a yearling and has a lovely manner about him. Probably would have made a lot more at another sale.”

One thing is for sure – the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, like the state it represents – prides itself on offering value for money.

Come 9 and 10 March at the Morphettville Sales complex you will have 369 yearlings to choose from: they are by some of the leading sires in the land and are bred by – you’d better believe it – some of Australia’s best breeders in the land.

You know there are plenty of winners between the catalogue’s red covers … it’s just a matter of finding them.

QTIS 600 YEARLING SALE PREVIEW

SHOCKING RESULT PUTS QTIS ON MAPBUT LUCK IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT

AS THE CURRENT NAME WOULD suggest, the QTIS 600 yearling sale was created to fill a specific niche: to showcase Queensland horses.

Ironically, it’s No. 1 graduate is a horse that was bred in NSW’s Hunter Valley (Ilala Stud) and sired by a Hunter Valley based stallion (Street Cry). >>

QTIS 600 YEARLING SALE PREVIEW

We refer to, of course, last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking who was originally consigned by Ilala Stud to the 2007 Gold Coast Premier Yearling Sale (now QTIS 600) before being knocked down to Washpool Lodge for $45,000.

One of Queensland’s finest pinhooking operatives, Washpool then on-sold the colt at the Gold Coast National Horses in Training Sale when snapped up by Laurence Eales for $64,000.

machine which largely got its mojo back with the last two Golden Slipper winners and, as recently as the last first Tuesday in November, a Melbourne Cup winner.

Perhaps the best illustration of the QTIS 600 however – and arguably its main purpose – is the comparatively unsung filly Tough Luck who was purchased for just $9,000 at the 2009 chapter.

she is raced by Leigh and Leith Wanless, a name synonymous with waste management (and fast horses) in Queensland.

The Wanless’ certainly didn’t waste too much on Tough Luck, their $9,000 investment now returning $235,250 from eight starts under the guidance of Caloundra trainer Robert Bradshaw.

Robert has certainly set the filly a task with seven of those starts in 67 days (averaging a run every nine days) – undoubtedly belying his ‘trotting’ roots – but one can’t argue with the results: four wins and two placings for almost a quarter mill in the tank.

Sure, the dream of a Melbourne Cup victory is what keeps everyone coming to sales, but it’s the tough and enigmatic

search for a slice of Queensland luck that will have buyers heading to the Gold Coast at the end of March.

Take your pick – there’s 462 to choose from … good luck!

The QTIS 600 yearling sale will be staged at the Magic Millions complex at Bundall on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 March, commencing at 11am.

2010 INGLIS MELBOURNE PREMIER

YEARLING SALEYEARLING SALE

The first graduate from Eliza Park's state-of-the-art sales complex RUN FOR WILSON won the 2009 AJC Breeders' Plate-LR at Randwick on debut. Sold by Eliza Park at last

year's Inglis Melbourne Premier, there's plenty more where he came from! Read on.

Page 32: track To Track 58

The victory of John Thompson’s precocious colt – Run For Wilson – in last October’s AJC

Breeders’ Plate-LR at Randwick was a huge milestone for Eliza Park.

With a mission to provide clients with every professional thoroughbred service – a one

stop shop if you will – Eliza Park developed a property at Nagambie, in Central Victoria,

dedicated to preparing sale horses.

Literally building this property from the ground up and quickly growing into what is

now Victoria’s pre-eminent sales facility, Smithfield became the third leg of Eliza Park’s

property triumvirate.

What separates Smithfield from the Kerrie headquarters and sister property at Nagambie

is that it’s purely for sales horses: there is no mix of equine population, nor diversity of its

mission. SALES ONLY!

Situated on the banks of the Goulburn River, Smithfield was purpose built and we employ a

specialised agronomist to determine feeding regimes for individual sales horses.

Not surprisingly, response to Eliza Park Smithfield's professionalism, resources and

competitive pricing has resulted in a large number of additional entries for 2010

yearling sales..

Already Eliza Park has enjoyed a successful sale on the Gold Coast with yearlings sought

out by a large domestic and international buying bench, while we also consigned a draft,

for the first time, to the New Zealand National Yearling Sales, selling up to $260,000: the

most expensive Fusaichi Pegasus sold across the Tasman in three years.

Now Eliza Park is offering buyers the opportunity to select from a quality draft of yearlings

entered for the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction from

1-4 March.

Offering a broad spectrum of athletic, well bred – and certainly well prepared – yearlings,

sires represented include Champion Victorian Sire, Bel Esprit, the second crop of Redoute’s

Choice’s Caulfield Guineas hero God’s Own and exciting first season sire Written Tycoon,

In line with its 'One Stop Shop' policy, Eliza Park also offers breaking in facilities and last year

educated over 100 racehorses on behalf of Australia's leading owners and trainers.

Past graduates of our Racing Division include Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler and dual

Group One winner Gallica to name just two that have tasted success at racing’s highest level.

While this division is already in full swing for recent sale graduates, we are offering a SPECIAL

TRAINERS REPORT

IT ALL DEPENDS on perspective, but $36,000 for a yearling is not too much to ask.

Sure, if you have $10.40 in your kick and not really sure who that is knocking on your door, 36k is a lot of money: but at a sale where the average weighs in at well over $50,000, picking up a filly you really fancy for 36 is a nice day’s work.

Especially if the yearling is by Choisir whose fillies include Group Two winners Hurried Choice, Gold Water and Champagne Harmony.

Enter Steve Hill, a trainer with a small team just out of Kembla on NSW’s south coast who – among others – spied a Choisir filly from the Mi Preferido mare Prefer An Angel in the NZ Select Yearling Sale catalogue and decided to trek across the Tasman for a Bo Peep.

Might seem a bit like bringing coals to Newcastle, but Choisir fillies had been fetching over $100,000 on the Gold Coast and at the Sydney Classic so Steve was prepared to give it a shot.

“On paper, I had her up high on my short list,” Steve explains.

NSW trainer’s ‘selection’ a question of timing

“And when I had a look at the filly I found her to be a very nice type … really thought I’d have to pay quite a bit more for her.”

Understandable given her breeding. Prefer An Angel won five in Melbourne for Ron Quinton including the MVRC Diamond Jubilee Stakes-G2 and was stakes placed at Flemington and Caulfield as well.

This is also the family of Group One winning milers Silver Chalice and Zvezda.

What’s more, Prefer An Angel has produced five winners from seven to race since retiring to stud, one of them taking out seven in Hong Kong.

“I got a real surprise when they knocked her down to me for only $36,000,” Steve mused when he signed for the filly around 3pm (Auckland time) on Wednesday 3 February.

But the best was yet to come. Just on 72 hours later, Steve’s $36,000 filly multiplied in price without having to even set foot on a racetrack.

On Saturday 6 February, the Tony Vasil trained Psychologist stepped out in the Blue Diamond Prelude-G3 for fillies

at Caulfield and, although she hadn’t previously been sighted in public (scratched from a Kyneton Maiden on 31 January), bookies had her safe in the market – around $6.50: the third line of betting. Fairly standard practice for an Aquanita debutant.

It was a smart move as Psychologist proceeded to couch her rivals with a spine tingling display, winning the 1100m scamper by a conservative four lengths.

Such was the performance betting shops immediately installed Psychologist as second favourite for the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes-G1 at Caulfield on 20 February.

But what’s that got to do with Steve Hill’s buy? Turns out Psychologist is by Choisir out of the Danzero mare Miss Conception, who just happens to be a half sister to Prefer An Angel.

TRAINERS REPORT

yet with no aspirations to pedigree ‘buff ’ recognition, there shall be no attempt to identify the exact kinship between Psychologist and Steve’s filly, yet it’s safe to say they are very, very close relations. Very close … indeed, if Psychologist comes out and does what a growing number of pundits believe, Steve’s filly will be worth …?

And that’s without her having to leave her box.

Steve knows how to get one right on race day though. Although not exactly a household name, Steve has a darn good strike rate with his mare Bitoflight while his other

winners around the traps in recent months include Danish Dollar, Riebeek and Miraculist … not bad for a bloke with only half a dozen in work.

Steve laughs at the implication he knew something of Psychologist’s prowess prior to the Prelude, pointing out that his network doesn’t extend the 900kms from Caulfield to his Kembla coastal hideaway.

More to the point, he is simply relishing his good fortune and, if you’ll excuse the pun, is ‘psyched’ about his filly’s future.

HORSEMAN’S CORNER

www.tracktotrack.com

Napoleon was on the money when he said that an army marches on its stomach. The same can be said for racehorses … after all, the best training methods in the world won’t help if the feed balance isn’t spot on. RIC CHAPMAN continues his series on horse feed, profiling nutrition experts, HorsePower.

SOME TIMES IN life the names of things fit so perfectly.

Take Bonecrusher, the racehorse. You just knew he would be good from his moniker … and he was.

So, when you read of a feed supplement company named HorsePower, you just reckon it has to work.

The marketing is superb, right from the top, but in this case the company has backed a winner too because their products do make your horse perform better. The products are superior to rivals.

None can give power to the horse (racehorse, weanling, yearling or broodmare) like these guys can, and the proof is showing up on the racetrack week after week.

Horses like Samantha Miss: this Champion 3YO Filly has been fueled by HorsePower her entire life.

“What is encouraging to us,” said HorsePower’s National Marketing manager Stephen Lamb, is that we are now seeing multiple generations of horses performing well.

“Horses like All Silent and Phelan Ready and Samantha Miss were not only raced on HorsePower but were reared on it from weanling stage too. We know the big farms that use HorsePower and we know how picky they are and discerning in what staff they have: and in particular what products go into their young horses.

“So, it’s a feather in our cap to see some of the biggest farms using HorsePower to raise their foals into racehorses.”

The ETI Infrared Equine Thermometer allows you to do this and save on expensice vet fees. After work, take a few seconds to scan your horse’s legs and you will learn his “normal” temperature. A “hot spot” will give you early warning of a sprain and allow you to commence treatment before the problem escalates. The ETI Infrared Equine Kit comprises:

• RayTemp 8 thermometer• Right-angled rectal probe• Tub of anit-bacterial probe wipes

HORSEMAN’S CORNER

And they say in life that the best form of compliment is to copy something. In the case of industry leader HorsePower that is very true. Rival feed supplement companies, with no where near the honour roll of star performers, are now trying to capitalize upon the methods employed by HorsePower – both in terms of how they try and make their products and the immaculate marketing approach.

So what is HorsePower and how did it start?

Enter one very astute vet named Dr Mark Greathead BVSc, MRCVS. Not only was he a leader in his field of repairing horses, he had an ‘eye’ for why horses where breaking down and racing below their best. It’s a rare gift and rarer still to find someone prepared to back the gift as Dr Greathead did.

The story goes back to his uni days. Upon graduating from the University of Sydney's veterinary science faculty in 1976, Dr Greathead took it upon himself to explore the world and at the same time experience vet life in different countries. For the next three years, he worked

in various veterinary practices in the United Kingdom and South Africa before returning to Australia and, equipped with the requisite expertise, commenced his own practice – the Racecourse Road Veterinary Surgery – specialising in equine medicine and surgery.

Page 53: track To Track 58

53www.tracktotrack.com

And he excelled at that too. Dr G r e a t h e a d p i o n e e r e d the use of a b r a s i o n ar throscopy for joint surgery on horses … a breakthrough that hundreds of owners and trainers salute to this very day.

As his reputation grew, so did Greathead’s personal desire to help horses and trainers further. His Brisbane practice continued to prosper, and he became increasingly concerned at the number of horses being presented with a variety of clinical symptoms: resulting from, in his thoughts, poor nutrition.

Chief among these problems were horses not gaining weight, horses tying-up, general muscle soreness, nervousness and chewing wood, to name a few.

Knowing these symptoms – most of the time – are precursors to more serious conditions, the Greathead knew poor performance had to follow.

After successfully treating many horses by adjusting diets, Dr Greathead eventually established his own horse-feed business – Equine Nutrition

Systems – which was launched in 1985.

Today’s industry leader, HorsePower, has evolved from that business, flourishing as more and more trainers and studmasters realise the importance of balanced diets and supplementation for their horses.

“We have many of the top trainers such as Anthony Cummings, Kris Lees, Paul Perry, Tim Martin, Graeme Begg and Les Bridge, just to mention a few, who love HorsePower,” added Lamb.

When a company can rightfully boast such superstars as All Silent, Samantha Miss and Phelan Ready as flagbearers, you sense these guys know a thing or two about helping trainers get the best out of their runners.

“HorsePower will provide expert advice and information as part of its package, with the overall health and well-being of the horse always being the primary concern.

THING OR TWO ABOUT HELPING

TRAINERS GET THE BEST OUT OF

THEIR RUNNERS.

“Improving the profitability of our clients through the improved performances of their horses is the practical manner in which our results are judged,” said Dr Greathead.

But HorsePower doesn’t stop there.

Online, via its comprehensive website, you’ll find a diet analysis program which will help trainers and studmasters get the right trace elements and minerals into their horses.

“We aim to provide quality equine nutrition products, based on sound, scientific principles, with an emphasis on low-grain feeding and adequate mineral and trace-element s u p p l e m e n t a t i o n ,” added Lamb.

Visit us online at www.HorsePower.com.au or contact Stephen Lamb on 0402 118 558 to find out how you can make your horses healthier and, as a result, run faster!

A CURE FOR WINDSUCKING

TOTAL COST IS Aus $137.00 all inclusive

Barclays Collar has a switch, that delivers a mild electronic pulse everytime the horse windsucks. If the horse responds to the collar, the habit is broken, and in  time.. CAN BE CURED - caught early enough.. it can be “nipped in the bud”, the habit is cured for the life of these horses, which... will then turn around the outcome of a windsucker, back to it’s full potential. Whether this horse, is a Stallion at Stud, a Brood Mare, a Thoroughbred still in training, or a retired racer etc., we can say, we have and do CURE WINDSUCKING.

Horses fitted with Barclays Collar, have been observed to be in no distress or discomfort, in fact have been seen to be a happier horse, joining in the paddock games with the other horses, instead of being the loner on the fence post.
