www.tracktotrack.com 41

If you’ll excuse the pun, this is not a suck up job. I’ve never met Richard Barclay and pretty sure I’m not in his

will, but all the same, I reckon the bloke is a genius.

one of those people you pass on life’s pathway that can make something out of almost nothing.

Working within the thoroughbred industry for the past 25 years – mainly whacking around stables – Richard realised what a huge problem ‘windsucking’ can be for racehorse owners, trainers and breeders.

for the uninitiated, windsucking, or crib biting basically relates to horses that chew on fences, stable doors – or usually whatever is around – while at the same time sucking in air. It invariably leads to weight loss and wind infirmities : two things which are not conducive to running fast!

commercially, it’s a huge no-no. Auctioneers are honour bound to announce to prospective buyers if a horse has been “seen to windsuck” which will invariably lead to a highly discounted sale.

Why do horses windsuck? Boredom usually. Instead of chewing the fat, they’ll go for

the fence instead.

I know that someone who bites his fingernails shouldn’t sit in judgement, but seeing a horse start to windsuck is about as frustrating as it gets. What’s more it’s addictive and the buggers often get their mates to join in.

I’m almost positive there is a lunatic asylum out there that caters for horse carers and owners who have lost the plot trying to get their neddy to stop fanging the crib.

All of which has spurred Richard Barclay into action. He takes up the story:

“I have seen situations where entire boxes are electrified in an attempt to stop the habit, resulting in some cases of the horse windsucking its knee (groan!).

“I did some researching to find what was available in the way of preventative measures but found that nothing addressed the habit, either in the short or long term.

“Around this time I was working on another project, designed to deter ocean birds – mainly seagulls – from nesting on boats.

“The research involved the

use of shock/electricity, which

is known to deter all animals.

“After testing a number of ways, I found an electronic children’s game – which was not strong enough for my boat project – but turned out to be useful for engaging a form of shock/electricity into a device for equine windsuckers.

“Recognising the strong throat action of the horse when windsucking, I wanted to utilise this action and incorporate it into a Windsucking/cribbing collar.

“At that stage we had a lovely grey horse in the stable, a very handy horse, capable of winning races, but he was a windsucker.

“He became our first test, which turned out to be a leather belt strapped around his neck, with two batteries taped to it in order to trigger the shock.

“We got an immediate response, but found that the shock was too severe and therefore had to be weakened.”

What came next wasn’t quite up there with Newton getting hit on the head with an apple, but pretty impressive nevertheless.

“one day I was filling a hand held gas stove igniter and,

on testing it, thought about the ‘click click’, which occurs every time it is used. That’s the piezo switch.

“I realised this would be the way to activate my collar, without having to use batteries, as the horses’ throat action would activate the piezo switch.

“After more thinking and testing, then more thinking and testing, the first Barclays Anti-cribbing collar was sold in May 2005.

“every collar was hand made which, in the long run, is hardly practical.

“Having no knowledge of manufacturing, we stumbled around, trying to find some assistance, eventually having our mould made in china.

“unfortunately, this presented many hurdles – and we crashed through some of them, mainly due to confusion at both ends.

“We eventually ordered a shipment from china and there were problems with the stock which cost us an arm and a leg and nearly drained the business.

“This led to retrieving our mould from china, and shipping it back to us in Australia, which we then modified and re-tooled into a more reliable and superior product.

“The collar is now made from nylon, and we are very pleased with the end result.

“Most of our sales are on-line, with consistent numbers from

usA and a slowly growing number of uK customers, while the european market is also starting to pick up.

“We have a terrific agent in the usA – Dyco-Tec Products ltd – manufacturers of Dyco-s o t e ( t m ) A n t i - c h e w i n g /cribbing wood coatings, distribute our collar.

“As awareness grows, sales are really starting to take off in Australia as well.”

so, just how effective is the collar?

“I have never professed that it will cure all horses – probably closer to 98% – but we’re consistently working on ways to improve the collar.

“Actually, the best results are being forged by just getting the collar ‘out there’, testing it on all breeds and colours.

“There are some horses who ignore the zap and just keep sucking away: it doesn’t penetrate through the hide. Black, bay and brown horses have a thicker hide, while others become calloused around the throat area from wearing other tightly fitted collars, straps etcetera.

“We do have a way to modify the collar a little, transferring the static shock to higher up on the neck, which is a little more tender.

“This will correct most problem horses, but once again, not every problem horse.

“unlike other windsucking collars and straps which have to be worn extremely tight, my collar is worn at around the same fit as we fit our own waist belts.

“one of the great advantages is that I’ve found by working in with a few thoroughbred trainers is that the collar can be fitted on to a young horse who has recently come into the stable and is showing windsucking tendencies.

“We’ve found that by putting the collar on these horses for 48 hours or so they show no signs of windsucking when the collar is removed.

“Kind of nips the potential problem in the bud!”

cranbourne trainer, Mick Kent, is a disciple and is quick to laud the benefits of using the collars: “I was keen to try the Barclay Anti-cribbing collar on a chronic windsucker I had in the stable. The results were outstanding … it immediately stopped her windsucking and consequently she has gained a lot of weight and her form has turned around to the point where she’s now winning races.”

one thing is for sure, if the Barclays Anti-cribbing collar isn’t an out and out winner, the horse won’t be the only one who gets a shock.

Years ago I was on a farm in New Zealand and a stallion came trotting up to the fence. Noticing that he had a worse set of molars than Chad Morgan, going off at every angle, the studmaster explained that said stallion had one day slipped his bottom teeth underneath the metal hot wire – some 2 centimetres off the top rail – before pulling back rapidly when he got zapped. Testimony to the strength of the wire, it didn’t move much … but the teeth did. Ouch!

Well, they said we’d never make it, but welcome

to the 50th issue of Track To Track.

To celebrate we have a range of features in this edition, including an in depth look at racehorse syndication, while the subject of our Owner Profile this month is successful bloodstock agent, Cameron Barnes, whom I am proud to say, has been with us since our first issue.

It’s certainly been an interesting journey and a steep learning curve for a gal from South Australia who thought a magazine dedicated to trading thoroughbreds would be a good way to spend your time.

Millions prior to printing the first issue and he kindly gave me his best wishes, but expressed serious doubt there would be a second.

Now no-one is questioning Gerry’s ability to predict market trends – particularly as he has a few billion more in the bank than I.

But it was with a great deal of satisfaction that we featured Gerry as our Owner Profile in Issue # 23 and, for # 50, we are printing an extensive preview of the MM National sales series over which he presides.

Sure, the road to 50 has had its share of potholes but the whole experience has been fascinating and I sincerely thank all the advertisers and readers who have supported the magazine.

Don’t worry, we’ll continue looking at ways to improve the magazine and have some exciting developments to announce in the coming months.

I hope you stay with us for another 50.

Best wishes,

ONEMORENOMOREIndustry folk were a little surprised when Nathan Tinkler made his rather prodigious presence felt at last year’s sales.Actually, we were more nonplussed than anything. A kind of, “where in the ….?”But by the time the dust had settled, Mr Patinack was being hailed as a moneyed messiah, largely propping up sales on the Gold Coast and in Sydney and the bloke that everyone wanted to meet. They say that money can’t buy you love, but it sure will buy you a lot of horses and – soon enough – the pundits were suggesting Nathan’s ‘give’ would far outweigh the ‘take’.Probably so, but the guy who is seemingly incapable of saying Onemorenomore, got a little of his own back at Royal Randwick in April.

ONEMORENOMOREN

O ONE TOOK THAT much notice when Anthony Cummings forked out $800,000 for the flashy Red Ransom colt at last year’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale

Sure, it’s a fair chunk of cash, but the largesse of Easter has a way of making you blasé: especially when it isn’t your money.

Besides, Anthony – bidding on behalf of Patinack – had already signed for $4.7 million by that stage and the crowed was still a little pumped about the $2.2 million he bid 10 lots earlier to secure the Encosta de Lago colt from Oceanfast – a full brother to Alinghi.

But you don’t need to be a Rhodes scholar to work out why Nathan Tinkler was keen to pay more than anyone for a Red Ransom last year (and the third highest price overall for a yearling by the Vinery stallion).

After all, this colt – apart from a cracking four legs and a tail – is rather well related and fairly ‘close to

home’ for Nathan.

A son of the multiple stakeswinning Last Tycoon mare, Palia, the colt is a half brother to the Fusaichi Pegasus colt, Dr Green, who won two stakes races in New Zealand and was also third in the Silver Slipper-G2. Furthermore, Dr Green’s full brother Roussay was a runnerup at Group Two level, while their mum is a full to Sydney stakeswinner Just Awesome

who died in 1998 but not before leaving a Group One winner in Sound the Alarm.

All good stuff, but the real interest to Mr Tinkler (one can only assume) was Palia’s sister Lady Capel, a stakes second at Flemington, but better recognised as the dam of Group One winner Casino Prince.

Back in January of last year, Tinkler paid an undisclosed sum for Casino Prince to race in his colours and to, eventually, become foundation stallion at his Patinack Farm in the Hunter Valley. >>

EVOLUTION 11THE WORLD’S MOST AFFORDABLE, DEPENDABLE AND DURABLE HORSE EXERCISE MACHINE

Lo and behold, the son of Flying Spur – who at that stage had tasted success as a two and three year old up to Group Two level – would come out two months later and capture the Chipping Norton Stakes. Let’s face it, you can spin a top whenever you like, but nothing puts a better spin on a stallion’s resume than a Group One victory.

When retired to stud after the Brisbane winter carnival, Casino Prince covered 140 mares at a fee of $38,500 which, in straight math, is around $5.3 million.

The take would be nowhere near that amount, but a whole lot less again without the Group One victory.

Therefore, the stakes – if you’ll excuse the pun – were high when the Red Ransom colt with the rather ironic moniker of Onemorenomore was given his first try in a barrier trial at Randwick last September. He won.

But as Nathan Tinkler would be the first to point out there’s many a slip between spring sips and autumn cups. Onemorenomore was entered for the Breeders’ Plate-LR, traditionally the grand unveiling of Sydney’s juvenile talent, but while the run was highly promising, the colt only finished third. Plenty of merit it the performance though given that the winner, Real Saga, later ran second in the Blue Diamond and was sent out favourite for the Golden Slipper, in which he ran fourth.

Benched for four months, Onemorenomore put in a couple of so-so trials in January, February before a third behind Melito in the Silver Slipper Stakes-G2, trailing by some six lengths.

The margin was closer but the not the position at his following outing – the Group Three Skyline Stakes at Randwick – where he finished fifth behind Manhattan Rain.

Onemorenomore eventually broke his duck at Randwick’s Kensington track over 1400m in the TL Baillieu Handicap, flying home on the heavy track to win by a whisker from Rogue Warrior. Not >>

of Australian racing. This was the young trainer’s first Group One victory and as sure as Nathan Tinkler is on everyone’s Christmas card list, it won’t be Jason’s last.

As for Onemore-nomore’s future, I’d be willing to bet the

$7.65 in my wallet that the 1600m C a u l f i e l d Guineas in October is a likely target.

Patinack stallion, Wonderful World ($22,000 fee in 2008), won the time honoured Guineas in 2006, while God’s Own ($33,000) took it out the year before. Lonhro ($33,000) won the Guineas in 2001 and Australia’s Champion Sire, Redoute’s Choice ($198,000) captured the race in 1999 from Testa Rossa ($38,500).

In other words, winning the Guineas, with a 2YO Group One tucked

under your girth, falls basically under the ‘write your own ticket’ category.

Maybe spending money like there’s no t o m o r r o w isn’t as rash as some perceive. Certainly the $800,000 is looking a very cheap buy at the moment.

One thing’s for sure. If the Red Ransom colt continues in similar vein, Onemorenomore is odds on to result in a Wholelotmore.

a bad race the Baillieu … it was won by Paratroopers a few years back on his way to six Group victories (including the All Aged-G1) and Mentality won it a year later, prior to three Group One salutes, including the AJC Champagne Stakes.

Fronting up in the AJC Sires’ Produce S t a k e s - G 1 , O n e m o r e nomore would again take a back seat to Manhattan Rain after getting out of his ground a bit before rattling home for fourth.

Given a shot at the Champagne Stakes-G1 on Anzac Day, Onemorenomore was in a far better position to mount a charge and, despite the slow going, there was no way Manhattan was going to rain on his

parade this time.

Ridden confidently by Peter Robl, Onemorenomore absolutely donkey licked his rivals, racing away to win by four panels and prompting his jockey to declare the colt “something special”.

It was a special moment too for Jason Coyle, Patinack’s private trainer, who was plucked from r e l a t i v e obscurity and is now mixing it w i t h the crème d e la crème

Possessing the “best turn of foot I’ve seen” according to his trainer John O’Shea, Written Tycoon captured

the sire shaping Todman Slipper-G2 at two before resuming at three with a blistering second in the San Domenico-G3, beating home Group One winners Snitzel, Stratum and Mnemosyne.

A son of the ill-fated Iglesia and grandson of Champion Sire Last Tycoon, Written Tycoon can claim the highly influential Northern Dancer/Kenmare cross with strong colonial influences via Marscay and Vain.

Iglesia has matched up particularly well with Star Kingdom-line mares and Wri t ten

Tycoon could well follow suit.

Covering 118 mares in his initial season at stud –

testimony to his tremendous ‘presence’ – his cracking first foals ensured another quality book last spring.

The aggregate was up an impressive 31.4% on 2008, while the average figure also had a decent yank of 14% (up from $8,750).

The clearance of 89% was, perhaps, the most pleasing aspect of the sale, but even that dimmed by comparison to the second day’s trade when 94% of horses offered found new homes.

Immediately after the sale, Inglis Director, Peter Heagney, was scratching his head: “It is quite staggering to think that in this economic climate we could have a day’s selling where we cleared 94% of the horses, which is almost unprecedented for a yearling sale.

“This sale has totally defied the global bloodstock trends of the present time.

“It was very pleasing to see those vendors who presented well prepared yearlings rewarded for their efforts, with strong competition across the entirety of the sale.”

W H A T A B O U T the 2009 Melbourne A u t u m n

Yearling Sale? Amazing!

If you had sat down a dozen industry experts in a room last December and asked them which, if any, of this year’s auctions would escape the economic storm, Autumn is unlikely to have registered on the radar.

Sure, it’s Melbourne’s second sale – third if you take the Premier’s two sessions into account – and is hardly spoken of in reverence.

Nevertheless, it’s a vital venue for a large number of broodmare owners while, for buyers, it’s an ideal opportunity to purchase athletic types at basement prices.

For chapter ’09, there were a total of 293 yearlings offered for sale – 16 less than last year – with a gross of $2,610,750 at an average of $9,965 and $7,500 median.

Five years ago, the late and truly great Tasmanian breeder, Denis Whishaw, sold a yearling at Autumn for $215,000 and the Apple Isle was at the fore again in 2009 – albeit from the other side of the bench – when the Bianconi sale topper was knocked down to owner Tony Seymour for $62,000.

Consigned by NSW based Riverina Downs, the Bianconi colt from Palace Music mare, The Palace, also took out the Inglis Insurance Best Presented Yearling award.

What a big difference a few months can make in this industry. The Bianconi colt was offered at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in January but passed in for $10,000!

Overall, Riverina Downs topped the vendor list with three sold at an average of $33,667, ahead of Caithness Breeding, Blue Gum Farm and Swettenham.

Swettenham stallion, Keep The Faith also sold well with one his filly’s being sold to Bill Gribble

for $46,000. Out of the Rory’s Jester mare Keep Swinging, this is a three quarter sister to 2YO stakeswinners Real Jester and Seidnazar, and will be trained at Ballarat by Bill daughter’s Rebecca.

Eliza Park’s boom sire, Statue of Liberty, topped the sire averages with three selling for $34,333, ahead of Elvstroem and Invincible Spirit.

All up, a very tidy ‘performance’ by Autumn : a result which, in the washup of annual yearling sales, will be deemed the success story of 2009.

JOHNO’SHEA

Page 21: Track To Track Issue 50

www.tracktotrack.com

JOHN O’SHEA would be first to agree that hard work breeds success. Hard work got him recognised and

accepted by leading trainers when he moved to Sydney. Hard work got him a handful of rejects when he hung out his shingle in 1999. Hard work got him to the top branch of a competitive, often shaky tree.

But a litre of sweat is nothing without a drop of talent and John has the innate ability to strike gold where others only found dirt.

The first bit of black gold came with the ‘rejuvenated’ Mushtak who took out the Stayers Cup-LR at Canterbury in May 2000, while Grey and Gold snaffled a Villiers-G2 to give John a welcome Christmas present after his first full year of training.

It’s been a steady flow since though with Racing To Win, Charge Forward, Private Steer, >>

Bedouin, Reigning To Win and Shot Of Thunder all registering Group One victories for Chez O’Shea.

Now instead of having to accept hand me downs, the stable is more tailored to suit.

Not that he’s forgotten his roots. Quite the opposite actually …

A Queenslander born and bred, he was taught by his folks – Bernie and Frances – to toil hard and believe in yourself.

“Growing up in North Queensland had its advantages and disadvantages,” John recalls. “It’s a very isolated area, so as a child growing up there, you tend to think that life revolves around the area where you live.

“As a kid I played football for Queensland, and I was very lucky to go on a tour around Australia when I was 12 or so. All of the boys from that tour then went on to sign up with one school in Brisbane, but I didn’t because it wasn’t a Catholic school.

John O’Shea’s steely determination has seen him graduate from cast offs to the elite of Sydney’s training ranks.Although he’s No. 1 on many owners’ speed dial, his own ‘dial’ betrays little emotion, regardless of a race’s importance: be it a Group One or Gulargambone Maiden.Yet, behind the no nonsense public persona is a bloke just happy to hang out with the wife and kids.

“When I turned 15, I had the option to move to a GPS school. Life would have taken a very different path if I had decided to go there, but I chose not to as I couldn’t take my horses with me. It all works in mysterious ways – I didn’t go to that school because I couldn’t take my horses, and I am where I am now because of my horses.”

Eventually shifting to Toowoomba and the University of Southern Queensland, John completed a degree in journalism in 1989: “It (journalism) was a great learning experience, but by the third year, I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”

Moving to the ‘big smoke’ in 1995, John found Sydney to be something of a culture shock: “At first it was hard. It took me a while to find my feet, but once I did, it was great. I worked really, really hard when I moved to Sydney. I wasn’t here to muck around.

“It’s a very different lifestyle down here … things move

21

Page 22: Track To Track Issue 50

quickly. People in North Queensland have no concept of what it’s like down here, and the same applies to a lot of people in Sydney, and their perception of Queensland. People in Sydney can be just as insular as those from North Queensland.”

John kicked off in the stable of the late, great TJ Smith whom he ranks as a tremendous influence. John then completed his ‘apprenticeship’ with Bart Cummings, Gai Waterhouse and Gary Moore before taking the plunge and setting up shop at Warwick Farm before eventually moving the show to his current base at Randwick.

It didn’t take John long – courtesy of Mushtak and Grey And Gold – to prove to owners

that he was no John-come-lately and soon become known as Mr Fixit.

Arguably his most celebrated patient was the outstanding racemare, Private Steer.

John described her as “talented” and “enigmatic” when she came into his stable and had some serious leg problems due to her “less then perfect conformation”.

Having shown dashes of brilliance with a stakes victory and a Group One third, Private Steer blossomed after shifting to Randwick, reeling off two stakes victories at Randwick, a second in the Doomben 10,000-G1 and a win in the Stradbroke Handicap-G1 in her first four starts for the stable.

In fact, of her remaining 11 career starts, she won six, including the Doncaster and All Aged Stakes, with a further two placings at Group One level. She would subsequently be purchased for $1.4 million by Coolmore Stud.

From that time on, it’s been all systems go.

John’s habit of making owners lots of money – and then lots more when the horse retires – was evidenced by his next star recruit in Charge Forward.

Spying the Red Ransom colt at the 2003 Gold Coast Magic Millions, John snapped him up for $100,000 which, following victories in the Breeders’ Plate-LR, Todman Slipper-G2, San Domenico-G2 and, >>

eventually, the Group One Galaxy, saw Charge Forward’s owners pocket $1.2 million and a darn sight more again when he ended up finding a second home at Arrowfield Stud.

But if the ‘dress rehearsal’ had proven interesting, the main event was the arrival of Racing To Win. The autumn and spring of 2006 truly belonged to that horse through success in four Group Ones – including the D o n c a s t e r and Epsom – and if there were any lingering doubts over O’Shea’s prowess, Racing To Win blew those out of the water.

Importantly, John’s eagle eye had centred on the Encosta de Lago colt at the 2004 Easter Yearling Sale and, in what was surely one of the all time great bargains, the trainer took him home for just $40,000.

But as superior a horse as Racing To Win was during that marvelous spell, the real rabbit out of the hat was bringing the horse back – after 15 months off the racing scene – to win the Apollo Stakes-G2 and, ultimately, a memorable performance to capture the All Aged Stakes-G1.

Although John O’Shea Racing is yet to taste Group One success in 2009 it’s highly unlikely the dry spell will turn into a drought.

Redoute’s Choice colt, Tickets – and therefore an extremely valuable sire prospect – won the Group Two Pago Pago Stakes-G2 in thrilling fashion this autumn but couldn’t quite crack it in the Sires’ Produce-G1

nor Champagne-G1, finishing runnerup in both. His day will surely come.

Without putting tickets on himself, John reckons his success at the training caper relates to work ethic, professionalism and an exacting nature.

Before a horse commences its campaign, John has already spent many hours mapping

out its program. He works meticulously to find the most appropriate races to allow each horse every chance of success, while his staff to horse ratio – far greater than most stables – underpins his success.

Away from the track though, John is a dedicated family man who would much rather be remembered as a Group One dad than anything else.

John met his wife, Isabelle, on a holiday to her native Canada and after several trips to and fro they married several years later.

They say that behind every successful bloke there’s a woman and John is quick to send the credit Isabelle’s way: “Special people really knock you over, and I decided I wasn’t going anywhere without her.”

As for the children? “I enjoy my kids so much, and I hate being away from them.

“They are my life, and racing runs a very poor second. To put it into perspective, if people tell me that I’m not a good trainer, then que sera. But if my kids tell me I’m not a good dad, then I would be very worried.

“I put a lot of effort into my job, but my family is my life.”

Racing to win … family to win!

IF MY KIDS TELL ME I’M NOT A GOOD DAD, THEN I WOULD BE

VERY WORRIED.

More importantly, it has a rapidly growing reputation for producing outstanding performers on the track and in the breeding shed.

One who has gone the full circle, so to speak, is 4-time Group One winner Princess Coup.

Purchased for $260,000 by New Zealand’s David Ellis at the 2005 Gold Coast National Yearling Sale, Princess Coup had plenty going for her aside from athleticism.

A daughter of boom sire, Encosta de Lago, she is out of three time stakeswinner Stoneyfell Road, in turn the daughter of Group winner Arch Duchess.

After winning a 2YO at her second start, Princess Coup produced a couple of shockers before reeling off seven wins and four placings from 12 starts, culminating in a NZ Oaks-G1 victory. She also won the Kelt-G1 twice and the Stoney Bridge-G1 back home before taking the St George-G2 and placing in the Mackinnon-G1, Australian Cup-G1 and Caulfield Cup-G1 in Melbourne, plus the BMW-G1 in Sydney. An outstanding racemare with 12 wins and over $3.6 million in stakes.

Well, now she’s back to where it all started (sort of) and will be one of the star lots in the broodmare section.

“ ARE YOU READY boots … start walking”.

It’s highly unlikely that Nancy Sinatra

had the Gold Coast in mind when she belted out her 1966 signature tune, ‘These boots are made for walkin’, but with 1,889 lots catalogued for the 2009 Magic Millions National sales series, we’re not advising high heels for inspections.

What a marathon … 628 weanlings (31 May-2 June), 759 broodmares (4-7 June) and 502 yearlings (9-11 June).

Still, what better place to be than the Gold Coast in winter?

Consigned by the Hunter Valley’s vendor to the stars, Willow Park Stud, Princess Coup will go under the hammer around 2pm on 4 June.

“We have fond memories of presenting and selling Princess Coup as a yearling here on the Gold Coast,” Magic Millions’ Managing Director David Chester pointed out. “Princess Coup proved herself one of the great modern day racemares to race in New Zealand and her performances at the elite level in Australia were first class.

“Only horses of exceptional quality can win four Group One races, including New Zealand’s premier race … not once, but twice.”

Chester is also pretty chuffed to be selling Mimi Lebrock who raced out of the Bart Cummings stable, logging five wins and six placings from 16 starts (and over $1.1 million in stakes) including the MRC Tristarc Stakes-G2.

She was last sighted running third to All Silent in last year’s VRC Emirates Stakes-G1.

Fittingly, this Show a Heart mare was purchased by Les Smith at the 2006 Gold Coast Magic Millions for $170,000 who will now don another hat when he sells Mimi Lebrock through the Widden Stud draft.

Indeed, Les’ LAS Bloodstock has three mares heading to the Gold Coast including 3YO Reset filly, Miss Baker, and

JUNE MARATHON

MIMI LEBROCK

Page 25: Track To Track Issue 50

25www.tracktotrack.com

Group performed Miss Meliss (in foal to God’s Own).

Les will undoubtedly be hoping that Widden continues its outstanding form on the Coast, having topped last year’s broodmare section with 4-time Group One winner Divine Madonna, who was sold to Darley for $2.7 million.

But Princess Coup and M i m i Lebrock are hardly nags on a rock.

Magic Millions has drummed up some 100 ‘black type’ broodmares, including stakeswinners Coco Cobanna, Episode, Eskimo Queen, Lady Jakeo, Tully Thunder, Victory Vein, Dan Baroness, Belcentra, She’s Meaner and Tenant’s Tiara, while the dams of stakeswinners such as Cheeky Choice, Belong to Many, Here De Angels, Autumn Jeuney and Man of Illusion are also in the mix.

Vendors from all over the shop have also committed drafts of weanlings and yearlings.

The recent brilliant form of Track To Track’s Horse of the Month, Swiss Ace is a timely reminder of the ‘potential’ for shopping on the Gold Coast mid year.

A son of Secret Savings, Swiss Ace was purchased for just $8,500 in the weanling section of the 2005 National before going on to success in the Oakleigh Plate-G1 and recently

notching up his second win in the Sir Byrne Hart Stakes-G2.

Among the 628 weaners on show, highlights include full or half relations to Danestorm, Hot Jules, Jymcarew, Strategic News, Blur, Churchill Downs, Diego Garcia, Flaming and Common Interest.

Three sessions of yearlings round out the epic and as Magic Millions somewhat accurately points out, this is “the fastest growing yearling sale in the country and has a proud record of producing high quality gallopers at great value prices”.

Not a bad point when you consider that s a l e graduates include a G o l d e n S l i p p e r w i n n e r ( P o l a r Success), 2008 AJC

Oaks winner (Heavenly Glow), a Kiwi Champion (Princess Coup) and Singapore’s best ever sprinter (Rocket Man).

This time around there are siblings to Group One winners Alinghi, Camarilla, Cheeky Choice, Danleigh, Diatribe, Grout, La Montagna, Lady of the Pins, Magnus, Mr Innocent

and Star Shiraz, while also catalogued are relations to Group winners Book of Kells, Deferential, Pre

Eminence, Wilander, Aunty Betty, Here De Angels, Idalou and General’s Dynasty.

Naturally enough, the elite of Australia’s sires will be represented, along with leading vendors : all trying to entice what is sure to be a sizeable domestic and international buying bench.

All the cracks will be gathering for the fray and, if you’re a ‘player’, you’ll undoubtedly be

there too. Make sure you find time to work on

your tan!

Read the fine print

Syndicators have to, by law, display their Dealers Licence in any form of advertising material – be it print, internet, radio or TV. Due to the odd nefarious type that is drawn to the racing caper, potential syndicate operators have to jump through hoops to obtain a licence … which is just the way it should be. The same restrictions should be applied to the car licences of those octogenarians with glasses like the bottom of Coca-Cola bottles who drive several tons of hurtling metal at considerable speed, although that falls outside the parameters of this particular feature. Put it this way, Australian racing authorities take a very dim view of folk who try to rip off their customers and have cut down forests to explain why the following rule of racing is strictly adhered to: AR.69P. Any person or persons wishing to make an offer to promote shares in a racehorse or racehorses must hold an Australian Financial Services Licence issues by the Australian Secrurities and Investments Commission.

That probably doesn’t affect you though: most reputable syndicators will cater to all the minor details and bend over backwards to assist you in forming your own ‘syndicate’ within a syndicate.

Have fun

Now I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t climbed the north face of Everest nor abseiled down the other side, but in 36 years of racing journalism there is nothing to match the adrenalin rush of winning owners. Why? I’ll be buggered. After all, they didn’t train it and they didn’t ride it. Nine times out of 10,

27www.tracktotrack.com

OK, THERE

ARE a few

rules to

r a c e h o r s e

syndication.

Well, phrase slightly. While ethnicity nor colour are at issue, you do have to be over 18, be gainfully employed and possess a bank account. Oh, and it also helps if you haven’t been involved in any criminal activity for the past 10 years … for instance, stealing someone’s else’s money to put in the aforementioned account.

You don’t have to sell a kidney to finance a share in a racehorse

There is no restriction to the number of people who can own a horse. More on that in a tick, but effectively through partnerships and racing ‘club’ concepts, the sky is the limit. Hence, you could realistically be paying pocket change for your, albeit miniscule, share.

You are not going to become rich and retire to the Bahamas courtesy of racehorse ownership

Technically, that’s not quite true. Say, for example, that a 10% share in a well bred colt costs you around $15,000-$20,000. He wins the Slipper and some $3 million in stakes. Then he’s syndicated to stud for $30 million. Minus exes, you’re left with around $3 million in your kick which is not to be sniffed at. Sadly, the odds of that happening are fairly long. Indeed, you’ve probably got a better shot at winning $33 million in Tattslotto.

they didn’t select it either. But the feeling is indescribable – it’s like a drug.

And, for all the same reasons, the converse is bloody terrible. Horses break down … it’s a fact of life. Jockeys ride bad races. That’s why they put erasers on the end of pencils – everyone makes mistakes. It’s not some massive conspiracy to spoil your fun.

Never forget Rule No. 5!

Corinna Slade is at a loss as to why everyone doesn’t own a share in a racehorse.

Sure, as Syndication Services Manager for the Thoroughbred Trainers Service Centre Ltd, a division of Racing Information Services Australia (try saying all that quickly with a mouthful of boiled lollies) it’s Corinna’s gig to encourage more people to stake a share in this king of sports.

But in a previous life – as the other half of the highly successful Slade Bloodstock – Corinna helped a lot of people on their merry way to the joys of racehorse ownership.

Some of the success stories include Belcentra, Here de Angels, Jiang, Time Matters, Fullazz, Under The Floor and Brockman’s Lass, but the real ‘hang your hat on’ was mighty mare, Alinghi.

Purchased at the 2003 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $80,000, Alinghi would go on to win $3.4 million from victories in four Group Ones (including the Blue Diamond) and was eventually sold for $3 million.

professions and backgrounds, the most important factor is that syndication introduced a shed load of new people to racehorse ownership. What’s more, the roll on effect from the resultant publicity can’t be accurately calculated. Suffice to say that thousands more signed on for a shot at glory.

Whereas many other racing countries tend to keep their racing a tad more ‘exclusive’ – and even frown upon plebs owning a tail when they should be brushing it – Australian racing has embraced the ‘masses’.

However, it’s a racing trait – perpetuated by media – that much of the fanfare emanating from a big race win is centred around the horse itself, the jockey and/ or trainer.

The owner – who foots all the bills and, by definition, pays for the show – is often lost in the rush … with of course some rare exceptions like Nick Moraitis,

Tony Santic, Nathan Tinkler and Bob Ingham.

But these are all men capable of spending fortunes on bloodstock and quite often do.

Each have the nerve and verve to wield their wallets at Inglis or Magic Millions auctions and six figure lots knocked down to these gents are considered somewhat passé, even in a cash strapped economy.

Mere mortals can’t hope to feed from the same table, but in a roundabout way they do. The average at this year’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale was $241,371, but an even more salient figure was the median of $180,000.

Now, while I don’t know each of our readers personally, I’m going to make a sweeping assumption that most of you can’t ante up that sort of cash for a neddy.

On the other hand, a greater proportion could see their way clear to find $18,000 for a 10% share and just about anyone – with nine like-minded compadres – can cough up $1,800 for a tenth of a tenth.

2008 Golden Slipper winner, Sebring, is a tremendous example: Star Thoroughbreds, who do a marvelous job both in finding winners and looking after clients, purchased the More Than Ready colt at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions for $130,000.

Denise Martin, who runs the Star operation, had some difficulty in getting the shares away and it was only five months prior to the Golden Slipper that the syndicate was a lock. The result? A bunch of very, VERY happy and considerably wealthier owners.

“Sebring highlights just how syndication in Australia works and can give first time racehorse owners the chance to achieve such extraordinary success and a resulting windfall,” Denise

points out.

Denise, who has worked in closely with Gai Waterhouse

since the show got on the road – and has included star turns with triple Group One winner Theseo – attributes a great deal of the success to teamwork: “Trainer, manager, yearling selectors and vets all work in tandem to ensure that horses are chosen for syndication meet strict requirements for soundness and ability”.

Star Thoroughbreds, like many of its fellow travelers, is BIG on communication and the stable is open every Sunday for

owners to come and view their horses – regardless of the size of their share.

A quick Google search reveals a number of successful syndicators, including Dean Watt’s Dynamic mob which notched up its 12th Group One winner in February when Reward For Effort won the Blue Diamond Stakes, while Inglis’ Sharemarket currently lists shares – offered by a wide range of syndicators – from $1,850 to $22,500.

Accompanying this feature, we also have contact details and information on a number of accomplished and highly respected Syndication firms.

As for other exceptional horses

which were all available for various prices of admission, Polar Success, Econsul, Arapaho Miss, Belong To Many (and she did!), Rose Archway, Poetic King, Fairway, Carnegie Express, Bureaucracy, Linesman, Bon Hoffa, Danglissa and 1987 Melbourne Cup winner Kensei were all raced by syndicates.

It’s by no means a definitive list, but you get the gist.

“Syndication, in one form or another, has been around for a very long time,” Corinna explains. “However, it wasn’t until the 70s and 80s that we turned it into an art form.

“As the use of racing syndication started to increase,

both government and industry began to lay down specific rules and regulations by which Dealers had to comply.”

Getting involved with a syndicate gives you some legal protection says Tony Fleiter, whose company Sire Custodians Ltd specialises in the syndication of thoroughbred stallions, and provides legal and consultancy services to other syndicators of thoroughbred racehorses.

“I believe the current ASIC regulations governing the licensing and activities of professional syndicators has had a lot to do with the raising of the standard of the horses which are now being purchased by professional syndicators at the major auction sales,” Tony reflects. “Syndicators are now also engaging the services of leading trainers, veterinarians and a variety of experts to assist them with their yearling purchases.

“All this is now culminating in the consolidation of professional syndicators as a credible source of quality thoroughbred racehorses.

“I have no doubt that there are a lot of people out there who dream of owning a racehorse trained by their favorite trainer – Gai Waterhouse, Bart Cummings, Lee Freedman – but can’t afford to do so in their own right.

“Syndication, however, gives them a much more affordable, professionally managed opportunity to achieve that dream.”

And that folks is what it’s all about.

Live the dream!

Cameron Barnes calls a spade a shovel. Shooting straight from the lip, he’s not the type of bloke that will let formality get in the road of veracity.Probably reckons that he’s seen enough literal bull dust in his time that he shouldn’t have to put up with the metaphoric kind. But owners obviously appreciate his candour – almost as much as the 373 winners of 897 races he’s purchased for them in the past four years.Must be doing something right …

CAM BARNES gets a little wistful at times. A country boy born and bred – and a Queensland boy to boot – you get the impression he’d much rather be kicking back at a camp draft than inspecting a sale draft.

Or, for that m a t t e r ,

shooting the breeze at a bush pub rather than chin wagging on the blower for hours, attempting to convince a potential owner why he or she should fork out the readies for a tried horse that hasn’t been tried right.

“Some days you wish you were back home putting up a four strand barb and digging post holes with a crowbar and shovel,” is vintage Barnes, particularly after a frustrating conversation with a sceptic who misinterprets his plain speak for slick sales patter.

But the doubting Thomas’ are dwindling in direct proportion with the number of winners he’s secured on behalf of clients: some 400 at the time of going to press.

And while some agents would be happy to notch up that kind of score sheet in their career, Cam has achieved the tally in a relatively short period and plans on adding considerably to the list before he finally puts the cue in the rack.

For Cam Barnes it’s been a fair sort of muster getting from Point A to Point B.

And he’s bloody proud of the fact most of it has been done on the horse’s back.

By his own admission, Cam left school at 15: “When I was at boarding school, I excelled at

spending less time on the school grounds than the day boys … I manged to pass my exams but 38 acres was a bit too small for me,” Cam recalls.

Hardly surprising: he was raised on the family’s 6500 acre property at the foot of the Brisbane Valley and, indeed, his great great grandfather Charles was the first settler in the region.

Cam’s father John and stepmother Elizabeth, bred, raced and trained numerous winners and, by the mid 80s, stood three stallions including Queensland Derby winner Confidence.

“My grandfather was a champion camp drafter and bullock father who won plenty of awards, while my nana – who raised me after my mother died when I was 12 – is one helluva woman. She’s 96 now and still doesn’t need glasses to read the formguide!”

Despite showing a fair bit of flair playing rugby and opening the bowling at GPS level, Cam decided that mustering cattle in the hills was his destiny and gave school a deft flick pass at the end of year 10.

“I didn’t have a lot to do, at that time, with my parents’ thoroughbred operation as I was tied up looking after up to 1,000 head of cattle and travelling the country with my own horses camp drafting. >>

“You could say I was an early bloomer, judging cattle at shows before I was 18 and judging camp drafts and led horses at 18.

“In 2000 I was leading rider of the year in South East Queensland when I had a tangle with a mighty big round post, going at the rate of knots on a pretty quick horse. It was nearly 12 months until I could walk again.

“I ended up droving down the western stock routes of Queensland and NSW for the Reynolds family: very influential in the Australian beef industry and the family once owned the famous properties of Hobartville and Tocal.”

Cam then took the ‘have saddle will travel’ route, touring Europe with his Danish girlfriend, Varinka.

“Most of my time was spent lugging my stock saddle around Scandinavia and working with problem horses. I based myself in Finland at an equestrian centre and applied 37 years of trying to master the thought patterns of horses to good use.”

On his return to Australia, Cam had something of a sea change and moved to Sydney where he had made quite a few contacts.

“I got involved with a rural financial advisor and we started to put together a syndicate to purchase the

world’s biggest land holding, Stanbroke Pastoral.”

Despite raising $250 million from European investment, the impending sale became public knowledge and numerous consortium turned up on the scene and it was sold to other interests.

Typically, Cam is fairly philosophical about the turn of events that could easily have set him up for life. “At least we took a shot.”

Returning to the family farm, this stint in Queensland would, however, be short lived: “I was working for dad, but by this time if I said go right, he’d go left.

CAM COMPETING IN THE WARWICK GOLD CUP ON HOMEBRED HORSE THAT DESCENDS FROM HORSES BRED ON THE FAMILY PROPERTY FOR 120 YEARS.

Page 35: Track To Track Issue 50

35www.tracktotrack.com

“So, at 38 – and feeling all of 18 – I shifted to Randwick where I was working again with quite a few problem horses.

“A short while later I started getting some calls from people I knew in Queensland who were looking for a racehorse and before you know it …”

Good mates with the late trainer, Tony Wildman, Cam attributes the wily mentor with some sage advice: “Tony told me: ‘don’t rort people, work hard, set your goals high … and enjoy yourself along the way in case you don’t reach them’.”

Cam has since sourced and sold winners ranging from $400 to quarter of a million from all over Australia, South East Asia

and New Zealand, often paying a grand or three for horses that recoup their purchase price many times over.

From the 373 success stories in the past four years, it’s difficult to isolate a handful. But as Cam points out “city winners are always good, though picking a cheap horse like Latvia, whose recent two wins from two starts saw her return eight times the sale cost, and Prince Havoc – a maiden in 18 previous starts – won three in a row during April by an accumulative 21 lengths, is hugely satisfying”.

Cam points to a fairly nondescript Desert King gelding, Zeroate, as his most satisfying achievement since

hanging out his shingle.

“I bought the horse from the Pakenham Sales – now a 5YO gelding – on behalf of Nathan Sinclair, the son of leading Moree trainer Peter Sinclair. Nathan was born with Spina bifida, but despite his disability, he managed to obtain his trainers’ licence..

“Zeroate was the first horse he trains and was his first winner – taking out a maiden at Collarenebri – and they tell me Nathan was so happy he couldn’t stop crying. Everyone who was there that day said it was the most emotional event that happened on a race track. I get goose bumps just thinking about it.” >>

From page 35

Cam is pragmatic though and, despite the strike rate, is the first to admit you can’t be right on the money all the time.

“Sam Hayes recently told me an interesting quote from Ice Hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky, who once said, ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’

“I reckon the key to it all is value for money, loyalty, a willingness to work 80 to 100 hours a week, listening closely to those whose opinions you trust and, importantly, a preparedness to back your own judgement.

“Take the shot!”

1.Beware – history will repeat the games the same … only the players are different. It’s experience that enables you to know which form lines will work from one area to another … which horses need a spell and which one doesn’t.

2. Remember – a horse’s form is either better than it looks … or worse. It’s being able to read between the lines that makes the difference.3.Value for money – my last 10 TAB winners were purchased from between $500 (which has now won $42,000 in four starts) and $30,000.4.Be flexible about age, class, distance or sex – among the last 10 TAB winners is a 7YO mare (purchased for $1,000), a previously unraced 3YO gelding ($1,000), a 5YO mare ($1,500) … you are better off with a top stayer than an ordinary sprinter.5. Don’t think you need to buy a city horse to be a winner – I’ve sold Melbourne winners out of Muswellbrook for $8,000 and Brisbane winners from Young for $2,500.6. Don’t be scared to buy a well bred, unraced horse – one of my clients has purchased seven unraced, 3YO geldings. Result? Seven winners. One of them, which I bought for $2,250, has now had 11 starts for five wins and six placings, and has received black type status7.It’s not simple and straightforward – if it was easy to achieve success in the thoroughbred world, there would be no newsagents, chemists or swimsuit models, as they would all be breeding, buying or training racehorses.8. Most importantly – the responsibility of spending someone else’s money is immense. So look at the history, look at the statistics … good results tell the story, not smooth talking!

Stall mats reduce • the amount of bedding required • the time spent cleaning boxes • and reduce stable odours

A $250,000 Magic Millions yearling, Publishing is the result of parents who clashed on the track before meeting at the barn.First and second in the 1999 Magic Millions were Testa

Rossa (six times Gr.1 winning sire of 21 stakes winners) and Sally Magic, a dual city winner who has fared nicely at stud (also dam of the Listed winning sprinter Miss Mooney Mooney).A summer two-year-old winner at only his second outing, Publishing was in fine form as a spring three-year-old – winning

three in a row at Caulfield and Sandown. At four he added to his resume the Standish Handicap-Gr.3 and the Carlyon Cup-Gr.3.A six times winner from starts, Publishing – who hails from the family of the champion sprinter Rancher – amassed over $385,000 in stakes.

Debuting with an easy Bendigo maiden win, Reann – a $375,000 Easter yearling – quickly stepped up in grade –

second at Listed level next time out before racing away with a Blue Diamond Preview-LR.Despite that five length victory he was still double figure odds for the Blue Diamond-Gr.1 but he still managed to win – another success for Diamond king Dwayne Dunn.

Racing only four times and failing to recapture his best form at three, Reann retires to stud as a three times winner of over $750,000. One of Hussonet’s 25 Gr.1 winners, he is out of the excellent Danehill mare Ribe – Gr.2 Moonee Valley Oaks winner.

business review

www.tracktotrack.com 41

Ouch!
