We are the Community’s TheatreCoronado Playhouse is committed to giving back to the local community, beyond off ering quality entertainment, by using its public platform to help those in need. During Romeo and Juliet, we are proud to partner with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The House was specifi cally designed to provide a home away from home for families with hospitalized children – including 47 bedrooms, hot meals and a children’s play area for siblings – so families can focus their attention on supporting their sick or injured child instead of worrying about day-to-day needs. Every year, more than 1,500 families are helped and the need for overnight services far exceeds its 47-room capacity. For more information on programs please visit www.rmhcsd.org.

Please consider making a cash or check donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego during the run of this show.

Special thanks to spouses, significant others, family, and friends whose love and support helped make this production possible.

Coronado Playhouse’s 2014 season is off to a great start. We are excited to bring you the Summer of Love Series, which started with the young audience’s production of Sleeping Beauty. Next, this Annual Free Classic Series presentation of Romeo and Juliet, set in modern day with original Shakespearean language, is a new and different take on Shakespeare. Our following play is the campy comedy Dearly Beloved, an hilarious and sweet romp that puts the ‘fun’ in dysfunction.

We end 2014 with Spamalot. This musical will have you laughing your coconuts off as you gallop along with this larger-than-life production!

We have undertaken a very challenging and costly year to bring you lively shows we hope you find boundlessly entertaining. Our board serves as artistic director for the Playhouse and we work diligently to select a season we hope will thrill you. We now need to ask for your help. We need your support to continue to bring you quality shows and programs. Now through July 31, we are running a membership campaign. Our goal is to raise funds and grow our membership base.

For our Over the Rainbow Membership Campaign, if you join at a family level or higher, you receive all normal benefits, plus you get two free tickets to Journey through Oz: a Musical Cabaret, August 1-2, 2014. In honor of the Wizard of Oz’s 75th anniversary we are planning this very special two day event with some of San Diego’s best talent singing numbers from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, Wicked and more! Please join our family at whatever level you can.

Chicago was one of our biggest undertakings to date and Chrissy’s team did a phenomenal job. Sherlock Holmes was also a crowd-pleaser and did very well. If you experienced either of these shows, or any production from last season that delighted you, I hope you are moved to become a member. We count on our membership to bring life to our productions, education and community outreach, as well as the opportunity for local playwrights and entertainers to realize their dreams. We can’t do it without your help. Please consider joining today.

Thank you for your support and loyalty to Coronado Playhouse.

All the best, Katy Skyrud Managing Theatre Director

Page 6: CELEBRATING CORONADO PLAYHOUSE’S 68th SEASON · Finally, my thanks to the Coronado Playhouse production and administrative crew—always supportive, always professional…Also,

When I first thought about directing something as well-known as Romeo and Juliet, I felt I needed to create a “relevant or modern” production in order to capture the audience’s attention. But as the rehearsal process began and I witnessed how this wonderful cast brought the words on the page to life, I realized that my concerns were misplaced since the author had already done all the work for me. Shakespeare has structured this timeless love story in such a way that the audience is taken a wild roller coaster ride that begins with a street brawl, followed by hilarious moments of joy and expectation, transcending into a passionate account of love at first sight which in turn instills the hope of reconciliation, but then spirals into the tragedy of death that ends the lovers’ journey. Wow! No wonder the play still maintains its hold on audiences even some 400 years after its creation. It always amazes me that if seen for the first time, Romeo and Juliet initially appears to be just another beautifully crafted romantic comedy but then suddenly morphs into repeated cycles of

hope and despair, gradually sliding into the tragedy that Shakespeare intended—all the while allowing the listener to experience the most beautiful poetry ever written.

I set the play in modern times; but for me, the modernization is only important because it reminds us that the story of Romeo and Juliet is as relevant today as it was when it was first produced in1597. Ultimately, the words, not the setting, are always paramount in any Shakespeare play; and oh my, what a gift of language has Shakespeare given us in R&J! Just listen how this talented group of actors enlivens the recurring images of light and dark, the heavens, and nature that support the themes of the play and you will come away from the performance with the same sense of joy that I’ve experienced since day one of rehearsals.

Finally, my thanks to the Coronado Playhouse production and administrative crew—always supportive, always professional…Also, special thanks to Gideon Rappaport for his brilliant textual analysis, to Patricia Lynch for her expertise during rehearsals, and to Mary and Keith Anderson for keeping the Bard alive at the Playhouse for so many years.
