A Note from the Playhouse - Member Supported Theatre

Dear Coronado Playhouse Patrons,Coronado Playhouse is celebrating

a milestone this year as we mark our 70th anniversary. We are the oldest arts organization in Coronado, and are among the longest running in the entire county. We are proud of our history and are tremendously thankful for those who have paved the way before us.

We look back with pride, and believe we are setting the stage for a bright future. We want to thank you, our donors, subscribers and ticket buyers, for making Coronado a successful and important player in the San Diego theatrical community.

I want to share with you a few of our recent highlights. Coronado Playhouse was awarded the “Best Theatrical Venue” for our 2015 body of work by Bravo San Diego. In addition, they awarded, our production of Avenue Q the “Best Community Musical” award. We are proud to have been recognized alongside some of San Diego Counties most prestigious theatre groups. This past year, we were honored with 22 Aubrey Awards given by the San Diego chapter of ACT for excellence in community theatre, garnering awards for our 2014- 2015 eligible shows: Sleeping Beauty or the Famous Rose Taboo, Romeo and Juliet, Dearly Beloved, Spamalot, Avenue Q and Boeing Boeing. San Diego ACT awarded us with the Judge’s Award, for our non-profit partnership program. We also received “The Schroeder” Award for our contribution to the cabaret arts.

Lederer, San Diego’s favorite verbivore, coming back to Coronado Playhouse.

Our 2016 season began with a great fanfare with Sugar, based on the screenplay Some Like it Hot, a Coronado favorite, as it was filmed at our very own Hotel Del Coronado. We followed that with rousing performances of our Cabarets and Concerts Series with Godspell in Concert and Altar Boyz in Concert which sold out nearly every performance.

Our 2016 season continues with the renowned A Little Night Music featuring 15 amazing performers and a 12-piece orchestra! We must give a heartfelt thank you to underwriting from some special Playhouse partners for making the orchestra a reality. Please see the inside front page of this program where they are listed.

Coronado Playhouse is committed to pursuing community theatre in the truest sense of the words by giving back to the people of San Diego County. We partner each of our large productions with a local non-profit organization, using our public platform to help people in need. 100% of funds collected are donated to our partners.

Confusion of the heart. Quotable moments. Mischievous servants. A contrived weekend in the country. Sounds like one of Shakespeare’s comedies, doesn’t it? It’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a Stephen Sondheim score but it is so much more. Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s 1959 film, Smiles of a Summer Night, Sondheim’s operetta leaves room to explore loneliness, aging, suicidal self-loathing, and the disappointments of missed opportunity. Choices have consequences, and relationships sting as often as they soothe.

I, like so many others, am a long-standing Stephen Sondheim fan. His music and lyrics are second to none and from the instant you hear the first few notes of a song from any of his long list of works, you know it’s his. My very first introduction to Stephen Sondheim was A Little Night Music.

I must have been somewhere between 8 and 10 years old and it was one of the many musicals my family would listen to during “Saturday cleaning” day. There was something so special about the music and the way it moved and ebbed and flowed that just struck me, even at such a young age.

When I was 11 years old I was so fortunate to get to see my oldest cousin, who I completely idolized, playing the part of Fredrika in a production in Los Angeles. Seeing the music come to life was fantastic! I was mesmerized by its elegance and beauty. I’m sure I didn’t understand the adult themes both complex and simple but it didn’t

matter, the music and the brilliance of the story and how it intertwined so many characters thoroughly entertained me.

I feel incredibly blessed to get to direct this show at Coronado Playhouse. This theatre has been like a second home to me for many years and the staff and board have entrusted me with some fabulous pieces of theatrical works but I think this will be my favorite. My most recent endeavors have been, fun, funny, irreverent and downright naughty. I’m thrilled to share this lovely story filled with family, love, lust, humor, heartache and happy endings.

Please sit back and relax and let the music wash over you.

seen at OnStage Playhouse as Louise opposite Debbie David in Always, Patsy Cline. In the San Diego area, Sue has done several shows at PowPac, including God Committee, Greetings and I Do, I Do, I Do for which she received the Aubrey Award last year for lead actress in a comedy.

ChrISToPher ChIleS (Henrik Egerman) is happy to make his Coronado Playhouse debut in A Little Night Music. Mr. Chiles has appeared in numerous productions on the East and West

Coast including Marius in Les Miserable (2015), Che in Evita Charity Works (2015), Madonna SDGMC (2012), Emcee in Cabaret at Cohoes Music Hall NY (2011), and Laurie in Little Women (2010). Mr. Chiles is excited to share his passion for the Arts and hopes for PEACE in our world through Music and Arts!

CIArlene ColemAn (Mrs. Anderssen) is thrilled to be debuting at Coronado Playhouse! Some previous credits include Refuse, or the Golden Door with ion theatre and La

Jolla Playhouse (WoW Festival 2015) and Mindset, or Allegory of the Gamer Cave with Nomads Theatre Company (Gam3rCon 2015). While she is not acting, she is preparing to graduate from UC San Diego and composing music for her own personal projects. She hopes you enjoy this amazing show!

rIChArD morrISon (Mr. Lindquist) is a voice teacher and music director, and is generally seen behind a piano and/or in the orchestra pit. But he couldn’t pass up the opportunity
