Dear Friends, Welcome back to Coronado Playhouse as we present the second show of our 74th season, Ken Ludwig’s comedy, Moon Over Buffalo.Making its Broadway debut in 1995, Moon Over Buffalo garnered Tony nominations for its leads, Carol Burnett and Philip Bosco. Set in Buffalo, New York, this farcical comedy has it all! From slapstick comedy and mistaken identity to love, marriage and romance, the witty script tells the story of two fading 1950s Broadway stars trying to “stage” their theatrical comeback. This fast-paced comedy comes from Ken Ludwig, the playwright who brought you Lend Me a Tenor (1986) and Crazy for You (1992). The New York Times said, “[He] is one of those rare contemporary playwrights who thinks in terms of old-fashioned knockabout farce, and that’s something to be cherished.” Director extraordinaire, Samuel Young, returns to Coronado Playhouse after last season’s

The Winter’s Tale to direct this hilarious romp through the lives of eight outrageous characters. We’d like to thank all of our members, donors and season subscribers. We are critically dependent on financial support from our patrons and we are so grateful that you are here to enjoy this production. We invite you to our other 2020 season shows which include the American classic Anything Goes, our 24th Free Classic The Tragedy of Richard III, Catch Me If You Can, a musical about lying and flying, and the hilarious whodunnit murder comedy, Clue. There is still time to become a season subscriber or a member ensuring that you won’t miss a thing this season! But for tonight, we invite you to be transported back in time to Buffalo, New York, “... it’s kind of like Scranton without the charm.” Enjoy the show!Lenelle Wylie Board Member, Coronado Playhouse

Moon Over Buffalo is a hysterical romp about a family of actors trying to get their lives back in order within the chaotic world of local regional Theatre. In the grand tradition of classic comedic farces, much of the laughter derives from door-slamming, mistaken identities, tongue-in-

cheek innuendos and slapstick humor, all of which made this playwright, Ken Ludwig, such a triumph. It’s over-the-top premise and ironic situations allow for joyous over-acting and energetic heaps of physical comedy, which is meant, if for no other reason, to bring a smile to the faces of audiences everywhere... Hold on, let me try that once again...while all that is still true, there is more to this play than just falling down stairs and ripping pants. At the heart of this production is the concept of second chances. The opportunity to go back and re-visit the mistakes we’ve made, face them head-on, and try to make them work out again. It is represented in this play, through the lens of the Theatre, where the intimidating, daunting, alluring Stage provides ample opportunity for

mistakes; and yet, the eternally forgiving nature of the Stage, also continually embraces us with another chance to make amends. While mistakes are what we need in order to learn, the gift of a second chance is how we get to make it right. It is a present from forces we cannot control, giving us another (usually undeserved) opportunity to make up for the error of our ways.

Mr. Ludwig’s show deftly celebrates the flaws and foibles of all of these extravagant personalities, trapped in seemingly no-win situations, relying on having enough resolve and determination to fight through it. Despite constant failure and frustration, they are gifted with those elusive second chances which motivate them into undeserving resolution. It is a romantic comedy, a family drama, a screwball farce, and a valentine to the Theatre.

It is my sincerest hope that you can take a little time off of what you may be going through and allow this show to entertain and enthrall you to forget your worries and come play with us for a little bit...And if we miss a cue or two, hopefully, you can come back again, and we will be able to get a second chance to make it right.

SAMUEL YOUNG (Director) is beyond thrilled to be directing this enormously popular and hilarious, Tony Award-nominated Ken Ludwig classic. Riddled with pratfalls, slamming doors, mistaken identities, backstage hijinks and over-the-top performances, this behind-the-scenes romp celebrates the true nature of the theatrical farce. The show accentuates the inherent grace of second chances, and how re-forgiving the spirit of Theatre really is. This marks Mr. Young’s second directing endeavor at Coronado Playhouse, after last season’s The Winter’s Tale, by William Shakespeare. Previous to that, he has performed as an actor on the Coronado stage in Macbeth, Hamlet, King Charles III and Much Ado About Nothing.
