PLMA’s past, present and future come together as we markthirty years of store brand growth and the founding of theassociation that helped build today’s partnership ofmanufacturers, retailers, brokers and trade suppliers.

It was a different world in 1979 when something calledgenerics gave buyers and sellers alike a new weapon tochallenge national brands at the check-out. With fifty table-top booths at the Ramada Hotel near Chicago’s O’HareAirport, PLMA’s annual trade show was born and store brands’ rise to retail stardom began.

Understanding the past can give clues to dealing withtoday’s challenges, but insight into retail thinking and thelatest information about consumer shopping behavior isessential. For its thirtieth anniversary celebration, PLMAhas assembled an all-star speaking team.

■ From Walgreens, where he served as Chairman andCEO, conference participants will hear from DavidBernauer, a retail leader known for his consistent anddetermined management approach.

■ From Starbucks, where he was President and CEO, Jim Donald, capping a career that started at Publix,continued at Wal-Mart and eventually took him to Pathmark as Chairman, President and CEO.

■ From the Global Strategy Institute, Erik Petersen,formerly director of research for Kissinger Associatesand one of America’s leading futurists.

■ From the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys ofConsumers, Richard Curtin, Professor and Director.
