525,600 minutes. That’s what we get every year—time to make the most of, time to waste, or time to make the world just a little better. CEB volunteers and the Global Corporate Citizenship team had quite a year in 2016. Our work continued to grow in breadth and depth, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished.

At the beginning of 2016, we introduced CEB’s 100% Promise, which captured key elements of our commitment to our employees and communities for 2016. The 100% Promise had four parts:

• 100% of CEB offices have the opportunity to give a day of service to their local communities.

• 100 staff members give a week of volunteer service to a nonprofit supported by CEB.

• 100 nonprofit organizations receive pro bono support from CEB.

• A percentage of our profits will be donated to charity on CEB Gives Back Days.

We achieved all of these objectives through Global Impact Week, CEB Gives Back Days, our new Volunteer Service Fellowship program, and our general pro bono work. In numbers, CEB Gives Back Days raised $800,000 for future charitable giving, we awarded 100 volunteer fellowships (including our Global Impact Week fellows), and 102 nonprofits received pro bono support from CEB.

Almost 90% of our employees took part in the sixth annual Global Impact Week, providing over 18,500 hours of volunteer service in 81 cities on six continents. Collectively, we partnered with 191 charitable organizations around the globe and completed more than 196 service projects, making this our largest service event to date.

During Global Impact Week, we sent 10 Global Impact Week fellows to Lima, Peru, for an immersive volunteer experience at the Martincitos Center for the Elderly. Most of the beneficiaries of Martincitos are indigenous Andeans (Quechuas), with little access to

education during their lifetime and very few resources. Our volunteers may have only been there a week, but it’s safe to say their lives were changed forever by the opportunity to get to know the Martincitos residents.

In 2016 we provided pro bono service to over 100 nonprofit organizations—more than twice the number served last year. More than 240 CEB volunteers provided over 4,000 hours of their time, a contribution that (including in-kind pro bono giving) exceeded $1 million in value for the social sector.

This expansion in the quantity of organizations served came even as we continued to enhance the quality and sophistication of our offerings. CEB’s 2016 pro bono portfolio leveraged our unique strengths to provide services that no other organization would be able to deliver, including a CEB Challenger™ Messaging workshop, HR partnerships, OPQ assessments, and new best practice insights surfaced from progressive nonprofit organizations. I’m particularly proud of the launch of our online

As always, it’s been a year filled with learning and new experiences. My favorite new word for 2016 came from one of our Volunteer Service Fellows: volunesia \vä-lən-nē-zhə\—that moment when you forget you’re volunteering to change lives because doing so is changing yours. Volunesia was the theme of countless stories throughout 2016. You can read a sample of these stories on our blog. I’m inspired every week by the volunteer stories I read there, and I can’t wait to see where 2017 will take them and us.

Global Impact Week 2016

For the sixth time, CEBers around the world took time out of their workweek in May to give back to their local communities. Our teams helped refur-bish local schools, visited with the elderly, built homes, cleaned parks, supported LGBTQ youth and our veterans, donated blood, cared for ani-mals, and fed thousands of people.

For the second time, we sent 10 Global Impact Week fellows to Latin America for an immersive volunteer experience. Our volunteers came from all over the world and spent a week in Lima, Peru, volunteering at the Martincitos Center for the Elderly. In addition to daily visits with the resi-dents, the team helped with the center’s daily ac-

tivities and revitalized the center’s garden areas and earthquake protection circles, which are vital as earthquakes occur frequently in Peru.

It was definitely a memorable week. As CEB Product Manager and Global Impact Week fellow Aisling McKeon said, “Never before have I gotten so much from people who have so little to give.”

“ I have been utterly amazed at the work CEB employees are willing to do in their communities. Most importantly, I have been amazed by how Global Impact Week brings joy not just to [those] whom employees are helping, but also to employees themselves—to be a part of something bigger than themselves and to contribute to a greater cause.”

Michael Account Manager Durban, South Africa

“ CEB Global Impact Week always creates excitement among CEBers. I am proud to have been part of the GIW Team this year. We brought smiles to the faces of the kids we helped and fulfilled the dreams of thousands of people in need. In a single day, we made a huge impact, which wouldn’t have been possible if we hadn’t worked together.”

ShalinideviSenior QA Engineer, IT Chennai, India

“ This company’s commitment to giving back and being a force for good in our local communities is one of the reasons I joined CEB. I love that my company gives me a week to live out my values and support causes that matter deeply to me.”

Our Pro Bono Service Efforts

At CEB, we help companies grow by harnessing their untapped potential. We do this largely by working with business leaders to inject greater precision into their strategy and talent decisions. Through pro bono work, we’re thrilled to make many of the same tools we use to support global executives available to nonprofit organizations, social sector leaders, and other civic-minded organizations so they too can magnify their impact.

2016 Pro Bono by the Numbers

In 2016, CEB pro bono volunteers logged more than 4,200 pro bono hours, completing over 65 engagements to help nonprofit organizations. We’re proud of this work—especially our support of two White House initiatives to address opportunity gaps faced by young men and boys of color in America and to help thousands of underemployed Americans find higher-paying technology jobs.

In 2016, we worked to increase the scope of the services we offer to the social sector. In October, we launched the Pro Bono Resource Center—a free web portal with best practices and tools sourced from HR leaders to help nonprofit executives address their most pressing talent challenges. In addition, CEB volunteers harnessed the power of the CEB Challenger™ model to create a program that helps nonprofit fundraisers more effectively engage their audiences.

young adults with the skills, experi-ence, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher edu-cation. As a CEB grant partner orga-nization, Year Up received compre-hensive support in 2016 to unlock the potential of its HR organization.

A CEB team helped Year Up evalu-ate its leadership development program and build a plan to fur-ther improve the organization’s leadership growth training. Ad-ditional CEB volunteers worked with Year Up to comprehensively review the HR function, identify op-portunities for growth, and imple-ment a change management plan.

PlayworksPlayworks, a CEB grant part-ner organiza-

tion, works with schools to enhance their approach to play using safe and healthy teachings that improve aca-demic engagement and well-being. In 2016, CEB was proud to support Playworks with various projects to enhance its organizational effective-ness and magnify its impact.

CEB pro bono volunteers partnered with Playworks to develop strate-gies to increase its engagement with external audiences and develop a strong organizational leadership pipeline. Senior CEB leaders also served as mentors to some Playworks managers, coaching them on their own professional development to help them extend Playworks’ efforts even farther.

My Brother’s Keeper Alliance

The My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) ini-tiative began as a White House effort to address the persistent opportunity gap faced by young men and boys of color. In 2016, CEB partnered with the MBK Alliance and the Taproot Foundation to use our best practice research in furthering this initiative.

Seeking to support the small, com-munity-focused nonprofit organi-zations that serve as the front line for the MBK movement, pro bono volunteers used existing CEB best practices and new research to cre-ate two guidebooks with actionable resources. These products help MBK nonprofits solve two of their top challenges: recruiting top talent and engaging volunteers.

2016 Pro Bono Highlights

“ CEB has been a tremendous support for Playworks this year. Their team of experts have worked with us on projects ranging from designing engaging trainings for our managers to developing a pricing structure for our services. Additionally, access to the massive library of tools and resources that live on the CEB member site is invaluable! Thanks CEB for your continued support of our organization.”

A Global Spirit of Generosity

Through our Volunteer Service Fellowship program, our employees have volunteered in over 25 different countries, providing over 3,200 hours of volunteer service to 33 different organizations.

86% of our fellows participated in hands-on volunteer activities focused in the following areas:

• 15% childcare/youth development

• 11% community development

• 11% construction and renovation

• 32% education

• 12% environment/conservation

• 4% health care

• 1% veterans support

14% of our fellows participated in pro bono projects ranging from improving a nonprofit’s organizational effectiveness to modifying websites and creating communication plans.

“ My one-week Volunteer Service Fellowship experience with Letra Ese in Mexico City helped me support the LGBTQ health and advocacy space in an emerging market like Mexico. Throw in the use of CEB’s pro bono tools and insights—and working exclusively in Spanish—and I got a week full of community impact, self-growth, awareness, and promising partnerships.”

“ The Batti Project was an entirely distinctive experience, starting with the four of us—across three India offices—coming together for the special cause of installing solar power in houses that had never seen light. We then progressed to learning to live, eat, and sleep like the people of rural Northeast India. I speak for the team when I say that this experience pushed us beyond our comfort zones and made us realize the value of the basic necessities of life that are easily available to us.”

“ I felt CEB’s spirit of generosity throughout my trip and realized that whether it’s by helping a member with a challenge, collaborating with a peer on a complex project, or teaching English and playing games with children in Guatemala, the spirit of generosity touches lives around the world. ”

“ The olive ridley sea turtle’s numbers have decreased 50% globally since the 1960s. This decline is due in part to the degradation or development of nesting beaches, the direct harvesting of turtles and eggs for human consumption, and the impact from commercial fishing. In January, we had the opportunity through CEB’s Volunteer Service Fellowship to directly help this threatened species.”

“ CEB’s commitment to bettering our world truly allows us to be global citizens. These opportunities help us strengthen our relationships, hone our skills, delve deeper into our passions, and—perhaps most importantly—give back to our community.”

“ It is very humbling to step into a completely different environment and understand what the challenges are for those who not only are living with life challenges but also would not be able to survive without the help of others. I am extremely grateful for this experience and look forward to my next adventure in volunteering.”

How We Support Our Volunteers

Daytime Volunteer LeaveBecause service events often occur during normal business hours, we encourage staff to take advantage of our daytime volunteer leave policy. This policy allows employees to use up to 40 hours of leave to volunteer during the workday.

Matching Gift ProgramWe proudly support organizations that our employees are passionate about and therefore match staff donations to qualified charities up to US$500 per calendar year.

Service PTO Days (“Days Off for Doers”)Most of our employees are eligible to receive additional paid time off (up to three days) for dedicating 50 or more hours of service to volunteer activities.

Singapore RecognitionIn 2016, CEB’s Singapore office received the Corporate and Societal Action: Recognition for Excellence in Singapore (AmCham CARES) award from the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore. The award recognizes member organizations that demonstrate an understanding of the links between business operations and society and that conduct business in a way that creates long-term economic and social value.

Growing up with nine siblings, Shaun got used to helping others at a young age. His natural tendency to help others grew over the years as he volunteered at an orphanage in Mexico in 2007 (and again in 2011), joined Teach for America in 2008, and started a nonprofit in 2014.

In 2015, his desire to help others led him to CEB, whose spirit of generosity drew him “like a moth to a flame,” Shaun says. He started to take advantage of opportunities to volunteer as soon as possible. He participated in a pro bono project for the nonprofit organization Spark and helped create a webinar with CEB Pride.

In 2016, he was named a CEB Volunteer Service Fel-low, which gave him the opportunity to return to the orphanage he volunteered at twice before. Shaun and another CEB volunteer spent a week at Hogar Irekani, which houses 25 children. “I had a big fam-ily; that was an even bigger family,” Shaun recalls. In fact, the children there “were like my little brothers and sisters,” he says.

Voices of Our Volunteers

This connection to people is one of volunteering’s most rewarding aspects for Shaun. “What I like most about volunteering is that it connects you with fellow people, whether through a nonprofit in a location you didn’t know about, a little kid in Mexico whom you didn’t know, or a local college student struggling to make ends meet.”

This last example is exactly whom Shaun is helping as director of the nonprofit Extraordinary Institute (XI) in Washington, DC. The organization provides incremental loans to help financially disadvantaged college students afford to complete their studies.

Shaun applies his business acumen gained at CEB to his work at XI and his volunteering experiences. In turn, he applies his love of helping others to his work as an Executive Advisor. “The way I think about my work at CEB is in line with my calling to help people, in this case, to help organizations,” he says.

“On the one hand, hanging out with some kids in an orphanage in Mexico seems unrelated to looking at a company’s strategic plan and giving feedback, but they’re related in that you’re helping something get better,” he said.

Vidushi Bhatia

Senior Research Analyst HR PracticeGurgaon, India

As an extrovert, Vidushi Bhatia is drawn to opportunities to work with people and get involved in her community. “I always felt it in myself,” she says, “[the desire to serve] was an inherited trait.” And being at CEB has given her many opportunities to put that spirit of generosity into action from the beginning.

“From that first Global Impact Day, that [event] has always been very close to my heart,” she says. That first year, Vidushi chose to organize a street play with the theme of teaching good hygiene. “I still remember it was so hot,” she says. Her small troupe performed the play four times in remote villages around Delhi and Gurgaon—covering almost 35 km—all within four or five hours. It was a struggle to keep up their energy. But her attitude through it all was “No, we must do it!” She knew that the play’s theme and the hygiene kits they were delivering would help people.

More recently, Vidushi helped organize the “Week of Felicity” in the Gurgaon office. What began a few years ago as a one-day Diwali fête where NGOs could sell their products in the office has grown since into a week for volunteering and community engagement.

This year, CEBers learned the basics of Indian sign language and animal rights, accompanied students for an educational tour of the Railway Museum, and held interactive game sessions with children living in shelter homes to teach good decision making.

The buzz around the Week of Felicity is due in part to Vidushi’s infectious enthusiasm. She has always appreciated the support and engagement of her peers and leaders at CEB, but she will always see opportunities for more growth, more engagement, and more service. And she always strives to find ways that CEBers’ unique skills can bring smiles to the faces of those they serve.

“The results and the smiles we receive,” she says, “that’s the reward for me.”
