Johnson, Crapo Unveil Housing Finance Reform AgreementSenate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson and Sen. Mike Crapo, the panel's top Republican, recently laid out a preliminary bipartisan agreement on housing finance reform after months of deliberation.

The highly anticipated plan would wind down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and establish an explicit federal backstop for the secondary mortgage market, building on legislation released last summer by Sens. Bob Corker, R-TN and Mark Warner, D-VA.

Johnson and Crapo are expected to release a bill soon and hope to schedule a committee vote in coming weeks, according to a press release.

"This bipartisan effort will provide the market the certainty it needs, while preserving fair and affordable housing throughout the country," Johnson said in a statement. "I look forward to moving this effort through committee once Members have had a chance to review our forthcoming legislation."

Megabank Customers Offer Community Bank Opportunities SurveyNearly half of large-bank customers are not loyal to their primary bank, but dissatisfaction alone is often not enough to get customers to switch from their large banks, according to a recent poll. The Harris Poll, reported in Bank Systems & Technology, found that 46 percent of those surveyed who are customers at large banks do not feel "very loyal" to their primary bank. However, 63 percent said they have never considered opening a checking account at a local community financial institution.

Treasury: Small-Biz Credit Initiative Has Disbursed Over $1BThe Treasury Department’s State Small Business Credit Initiative recently disbursed more than $1 billion to state economic development agencies to support small-business lending and investment, according to the program’s latest quarterly report. Additionally, funds used by state programs reached $750 million, or 51 percent of the nearly $1.5 billion of total allocated funds, by the end of last quarter.

The Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 created the SSBCI to fund state programs that support access to credit for small businesses and small manufacturers. President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2015 budget seeks an additional $1.5 billion in funding to extend the program.

6th Annual Bank Directors’ & Executive Management Conference Tuesday, May 13, 2014 | The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, Atlanta

"Let’s Get Going!?” Is that an affirmative statement for your bank or a question you are asking? That is the dilemma confronted by many community bankers in today’s environment. Should they begin taking the steps in a new environment to get ahead of the curve and begin looking at new ways to enhance value, create core earnings, look at new insurance products, create new compensation structures and focus on emerging issues like cyber-liability? Or, on the other hand, do those tasks seem so daunting that now is the time to position your bank to sell to another organization?

Alternatively, are you looking to merely maintain organic growth by remaining independent or are you seeking to expand your reach through acquisitions? Each of those various topics is being confronted by all of us today.

In this year’s Bank Directors’ and Executive Management Conference, we will cover these topics and much more to help you set a firm direction for your organization in the coming years regardless of your strategic choice. To learn more, click here for the brochure and to register, click here or contact Jodi Swilley.

2nd Annual Southeastern Bank Chairman’s SummitWednesday, May 14, 2014 | The Georgian Club, Atlanta

What does the Chairman of the Board really do? Is it a ceremonial position or one that requires actual action? For too long, the role of the Chairman of the Board of a financial institution has generally been undefined. This Summit will help answer those questions.

This program has a unique format; it is not a lecture; it is not a seminar presentation; but rather, it is an open forum discussion among bank Chairmen from across the state and the Southeast. This format allows an opportunity for you to pick up techniques and trends used by other Chairmen to lead their organizations. To learn more, click here for brochure. To register, click here or contact Jodi Swilley .

4th Bank Directors College and FDIC WorkshopMonday, August 18, 2014 | The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa

Please SAVE THE DATE and make plans now to join community bankers from all across the state on Monday, August 18th at the beautiful Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa. Collateral Valuation and DocumentationAn important component of a bank’s allowance calculation is identifying FAS 114 loans for impairment. One of the most widely used impairment methods is the Fair Market Value of Collateral, since many banks and credit unions must accommodate collateral-dependent loans or loans on which the borrower is not expected to make future cash payments. Help us Support Children’s Healthcare!Kristi Greer, Education & Development Officer, Oconee State Bank, Watkinsville and CBA Leadership Division Committee Member, decided to do things a little differently for her Children’s Healthcare fundraising efforts.
