dOUbLE POdIUM FOr caStrOL & FPrThe Castrol EDGE backed FPR pair of Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom walked away from the Sucrogen Townsville 400 having secured podium positions in Saturday and Sunday’s races respectively.

The results shot Winterbottom into the top five in the Championship, whilst Davison would have consolidated his position had it not been for being spun during Sunday’s 200km affair.

Saturday’s race saw Jamie Whincup finishing in second and Garth Tander in first, on Sunday the TeamVodafone pair of Whincup and Craig Lowndes taking one-two ahead of Winterbottom.

Winterbottom took pole position on Saturday but narrowly missed out on a fifth consecutive pole position on Sunday, coming in second.

Saturday saw the Castrol EDGE backed teams finish consistently with Winterbottom in fifth, close by in seventh was, Rick Kelly in his Castrol-backed Jack Daniel’s machine.

Veteran driver Russell Ingall finished in tenth, and after leading for part of the race Paul Dumbrell came in at 12th, he was one of only two drivers who started the race on soft tyres.

The other Jack Daniel’s car driven by Todd Kelly came in 14th position, finishing towards the back of the field was Tony d’Alberto who managed 18th; he was followed by Kelly driver Greg Murphy who celebrated his 400th race, Dave Reynolds brought the Stratco racer home in 24th.

Sunday brought another podium this time for Winterbottom, however the rest of the field fell behind Saturday’s performance.

Will Davison was keen to back up yesterday’s podium but struggled after a safety car period and an incident with Jason Bright sent him to the back of the field, he finished in 18th position.

Supercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall’s pushed forward finishing in ninth, whilst Paul Dumbrell brought the Bottle-O Falcon into 10th, Rick Kelly was the first of the Kelly Gang home in 13th.

Steve Owen in the Castrol-backed VIP Petfoods machine followed in 14th; Greg Murphy, David Reynolds and Tony D’Alberto all trailed the field in 20th, 22nd and 25th.

The next event will be Queensland Raceway across the weekend of August 19-21.

CASTROL EDGE & GREG MURPHY – 400 STRONGFittingly, the Sucrogen Townsville 400 represented the 400th race for Kiwi veteran, Greg Murphy and Castrol played its part in congratulating him.

Murphy – who has enjoyed most of his career highlights with Castrol on the cars he’s driven – was blown away by the reception he received.

“Castrol is more than just a sticker on the car for us at Kelly

Racing, it’s a partnership that has been enduring for many years and for many highlights of not only my racing career, but my life in general.”

Members of Kelly Racing’s team held a giant Castrol EDGE AFL-style banner for the multiple Bathurst winner to drive the Pepsi MAX Crew car through before the assembled media were able to gain quotes from the New Zealand born racer.

TRUST SYNTHETICS TRUST CASTROL EDGE THE SPECIALISTS WHEN IT COMES TO EXTREME POWER & PERFORMANCE

WHY SYNTHETIC OILS?Get the best protection for your engine by choosing a high quality synthetic oil. Synthetic oils offer significant advantages over mineral oils.

HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITY: Synthetic oils are able to withstand higher operating temperatures under which mineral oils begin to break down. Synthetic oils provide optimum lubrication at extreme temperatures reducing wear and extending engine life.

FASTER LUBRICATION ON COLD STARTS: Synthetic oils remain more fluid at cold start up temperatures, circulating faster to protect moving parts within the engine. Because synthetic oils flow quicker, the engine reaches optimal operating efficiency sooner. Mineral oils on the other hand, tend to thicken in colder temperatures making the engine less efficient.

BETTER EVERYDAY PROTECTION: Synthetic oils are most resistant to the chemical degradation that comes with everyday driving. Synthetic oils provide better protection for your engine under normal as well as arduous driving conditions, minimising oil degradation and protecting against harmful deposits.

WHY CASTROL EDGE?At Castrol we know a thing or two about synthetic engine oil. In fact, we developed the very first fully synthetic racing oil. We’ve poured over 100 years of experience and lubricant technology into Castrol EDGE, the best engine oil we’ve ever made.

PROVEN PERFORMANCE IN EXTREME CONDITIONS: Castrol EDGE is able to withstand higher operating temperatures under which other engine oils begin to break down. Tests prove that even after blasting an engine at 340ºC, it is still running 72 hours later.

Castrol EDGE will also protect your engine at start up with its superior cold flow properties. At -55ºC Castrol EDGE still flows while the competitor synthetic oil has almost solidified.

Castrol EDGE’s synthetic technology provides outstanding protection at extreme temperatures, reducing wear and extending the life of your engine.

MAXIMUM POWER FOR LONGER: Get the best performance out of your engine by choosing Castrol EDGE. Tests prove that Castrol EDGE delivers maximum horsepower for up to 45% longer than competitor synthetic oils.

IT’S NEFF-UNNY – MIKE WINS AGAINMike Neff and his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang have upstaged the remainder of the Funny Car field at 14th annual NHRA O’Reilly Rt. 66 Nationals, securing his fourth win for the season.

The John Force Racing driver set the fastest times in all four rounds at the Nationals Rt. 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois last weekend.

He recorded runs of 4.257, 4.223, 4.252, and 4.246 seconds to attain the fifth win of his career; and defeat Jeff Arend in the final, Arend ran 5.160.

He was quick to praise the team behind his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang;

“(The success today) is just a tribute to our Ford Mustang body; I believe it is the best aerodynamically; it gives us lots of downforce without the drag; it is just a great car; it comes down to preparation by the team.

“Any time you get a race car that is that consistent you really have to give the credit to the team; all the guys that are changing those parts, building those motors, they are doing everything exactly the same.

“There are no variables; that is a key thing for a tuner. I had the luxury of not changing anything; they are so precise in what they do; the car just kept repeating itself, I am very happy about that.”

Fellow John Force Racing drivers, John Force and Robert Hight were unable to follow Neff with the quick runs, losing out in earlier eliminations; the three however all remain in the top ten in the championship.

Mike Neff leads the field in first place, Robert Hight is in third and John Force follows in eighth place; they will next compete at the 32nd annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals in Denver Colorado, July 22-24.

They got to tour the pit garages, meet the drivers, check out the Freestyle MX at the eXcellerator Zone and generally enjoy the weekend’s action.

For the third year, Castrol gave over the suite on Friday to the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland to host families and sufferers of Leukaemia and related blood disorders. The team from the Foundation were able to get into the Ford Performance Racing pit area and get close to both Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom just before they went out for practice!
