team edge race PreView - V8 suPercars: chill Perth 360The fourth round of the V8 Supercars Championship takes crews to the far west for the Chill Perth 360 this weekend.

Castrol-backed Pepsi Max Crew driver Will Davison is currently the man to beat as he sits atop the championship standings, 31 points ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Jamie Whincup. Last year the factory Fords dominated the punchy Barbagallo circuit with Mark Winterbottom winning Saturday’s race and Davison claiming the top spot of the rostrum for both of Sunday’s races. The event format returns to the 60/60 Super Sprint, first run at Symmons Plains in early April. Race 10 of the championship will be run on Saturday (60/60), followed by two 100km races on Sunday (Races 11 and 12).

Castrol-backed Nissan Motorsport will be looking to maximising the tyre life on their Nissan Altimas in the V8 Supercars event at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth this weekend. The tough and tight 2.42km West Australian circuit is notorious for severe tyre wear, with team driver Todd Kelly suggesting that “tyre degradation” is likely to be the most used words in the V8 pitlane over the course of the event.

“Those words ‘tyre degradation’ will come up a lot over the weekend. Probably more than anything else,” said Todd Kelly. “I think we’ll have to go longer than we ever have on a soft set of tyres around Barbagallo. The race winner will be the one who has the best balanced car, the nicest on its tyres and the most patient and sensible driver. If

you try and race hard, you’ll run out of tyres after three laps. It will be a race of management.”

Castrol-backed Supercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall put on a fine demonstration of overtaking in Races 6 and 7 of the V8 Supercar Championship in Auckland and will be looking to continue that form in Western Australia this weekend. “The Enforcer” is the most experienced driver in the paddock and will be calling on his knowledge to play a key roll in performing well at this track. Each team will have 24 new soft compound tyres each for the event, to be used across the three races on the abrasive, sand lined track.

Nissan Motorsport has also finalised its endurance driver line-up for the 2013 V8

Supercars Championship, confirming the signing of young guns Taz Douglas and Daniel Gaunt to the Norton 360 Racing Nissan Altimas. The signings completes the four-car line-up, with Jack Daniel’s Racing’s Rick and Todd Kelly to be joined by Karl Reindler and David Russell respectively (announced last week). Ford’s Pepsi Max Crew has finalised its driver line-up for the three-race Endurance Cup events with the signing of Steve Owen who will partner Will in the #6 Pepsi Max FPR Ford at this year’s Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast events. He joins FPR on a two-year deal and will drive alongside team stalwarts Steve Richards and

Dean Canto to give Ford arguably the most experienced line-up on the grid. Steve Owen is highly-experienced and aside from contesting last year’s championship in a Ford Falcon, he is also a two-time Dunlop Series Champion and has enjoyed main game success in the endurance races.

The battles for the Australian CIK Stars of Karting Series has taken a step up after the second round of competition at Adelaide’s Bolivar Raceway. Two new victors reached the top step of the podium - in Victorian George Geranis (Pro Light) and West Australian Kurt Kostecki (Pro Junior), whilst the titanic battle in Pro Gearbox between 2011 World Cup Champion, Joey Hanssen and 18-year-old Chris Hays took another twist with Hanssen taking a double win.

Unheralded Melbourne racer, Geranis had arguably the best weekend of his racing career in taking out both Pro Light Finals. He set the pole time and won a heat race. During both finals he was able to hold out multiple Australian Champion and fellow Kosmic chassis driver, Matthew Waters - who by virtue of his second placed finishes

New wiNNers as stars oF KartiNg series iNteNsiFiesin all four finals held in 2013 has a five point advantage over Geranis in Championship standings.

In the main final of the day, the pair crossed the line less than a 10th of a second apart. Finishing third was another Victorian in Jordan Nicolaou. Fourth place and winner of the inaugural adidas Motorsport All Star Award was Lachlan Gibbons. The Juniors battle has intensified after a tense opening final in Adelaide. Round one winner, Liam McLellan and West Aussie debutante, Kurt Kostecki had a tough fight which took a step forward still many laps from the chequered flag. The pair bumped each other on several occasions, at one point McLellan driving straight across a chicane.

Entering the battle was Northern Territory racer Bryce Fullwood in his first

ever CIK Stars of Karting, presented by Castrol EDGE event. If it had’ve gone pear shaped for the other two, Fullwood could have won on debut, however Kostecki was able to settle it down and take the first final win. In the second final, Fullwood pulled to the lead at one point, however McLellan - who won the opening round - quickly set about getting himself to the front and taking a dominant win in his Praga kart and extending his lead in the Championship.

New South Wales PCR driver, James Abela crossed the line second whilst the other Kostecki brother, Jake took his Tony Kart to third placing. Fullwood came in fourth and was presented with the BlackBerry Powerful award for his performance. Dutch driver Joey Hanssen asserted his power in the Pro Gearbox category taking a pair of solid wins aboard his factory Lenzokart. After

Hays maintains the Championship lead however by 12 points at the end of the weekend. In the support categories, Queenslander Brendan Nelson was awarded the SA State Title in the Dunlop KartSport TaG Heavy category in arguably the most entertaining race of the weekend. He, South Aussie Paul Pittam, Sydney 16-year-old Michael

Saller, William Yarwood and local, Danny Errigo took the race to the wire, with Nelson getting a narrow win over Saller.

Australian Rotax European Championships racer, Pierce Lehane took a dominant win in the Dunlop KartSport TaG Light State Championships, Kyle Henry-Smith (TaG Restricted Light), Michael Smith-Crossing (TaG Restricted Heavy) and Cooper Murray (Rookies) also tasted the victory champagne. STRENGTH TO PERFORM

The Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team have tasted the sweetest success at the third round of the WTCC in Slovakia with the team finishing one-two in Race 1. Gabriele Tarquini gave the Castrol Honda team its first WTCC win when he converted pole position into victory in Race 1 at the Slovakia Ring.

His teammate Tiago Monteiro drove strongly too second in Race 1, to complete the terrific one-two. After a truly memorable Race 1, Tarquini scored his second podium of the day finishing a strong third behind winner and reverse grid pole-sitter Tom Coronel.

Monteiro finished fifth after an incredible start from ninth on the grid, before he was tapped wide by Muller and lost three places. Some close racing between Huff, Muller, Tarquini and Monteiro for second was the highlight of the race.

Overall, it was a very strong weekend for Castrol Honda Racing, leaving Tarquini just 24 points behind Yvan Muller in the Drivers' Championship. All eyes are now on the Hungarian race in just one week’s time.

Castrol EDGE-backed Jan Kopecký has continued his impressive start to the European

Rally Championship by making it three wins out of four events with his first gravel victory on the Rallye Açores in Portugal. Driving a Castrol EDGE-backed ŠKODA Motorsport Fabia Super 2000 Kopecký won a total of seven stages in the event, which was plagued by poor weather. The result means that the Czech driver increases his lead of the ERC standings to 27 points heading to round five in Corsica next month.

“I’m very happy because my last gravel rally was two years ago and this is my first win on gravel so thanks to ŠKODA and to everyone in the team for doing a great job,” said Kopecký. “I was not thinking about the corner where I crashed but when I passed that corner I said ‘okay, it’s over’ and then we went wide on the next corner so I thought it was better not to think about these things again. It’s been a good start to the season and now we need to prepare for Corsica.”

Craig Breen extended his run of podiums to three events with a fine second place in a Peugeot Rally Academy 207 S2000 as local hero Ricardo Moura bagged the final podium place on his debut in a Fabia S2000 after a close scrap with fellow Portuguese Bruno Magalhães and Bernardo Sousa. Formula One race winner Robert Kubica hit back after his roll over on Friday in his Citroën DS3 RRC to win seven stages, but was placed sixth overall at the finish.

Castrol-backed Pata Honda rider Jonathan Rea maintained his remarkable record of podium finishes at Assen in the Netherlands by finishing second in Race 1 of the third round 2013 World Superbike championship event. Rea started Sunday’s two, third-round World Superbike championship races from the front row of the grid after setting the second-fastest time in Saturday’s Superpole sessions at the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands.

“It was kind of typical Assen – we got on the podium, which was good!’ Rea commented. “In race one I rode really good but just had nothing for Sykes. In race two I was feeling quite good in the beginning but it was a little bit my fault that we couldn’t be on the box. It’s lucky that we have a two-day test to do that on Wednesday and Thursday before we go on to Monza where speed’s very important. A two and a four this weekend is not a win

like Assen should be for me, but we’ve got to be satisfied. We’ve come from a long way back and the championship position is looking a bit more healthy than it did after Aragon so I guess I’m satisfied with the weekend.”

The Castrol-backed BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team concludes a dramatic and difficult Sunday at the “TT Circuit” in Assen, the Netherlands. Factory rider Chaz Davies finished seventh and fifth after crashing in the morning’s warm-up. His teammate Marco Melandri had even more bad luck: a technical issue stopped him in the warm-up lap for race one. In race two, the Italian finished eighth. The winners at the third round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship were Tom Sykes and Eugene Laverty. In the Riders’ classification, Chaz, Laverty and Sykes are on equal points behind leader Sylvain Guintoli, all having 83 points in their tally.

Pata Honda rider Leon Haslam crashed at the end of this morning’s free practice session at Assen in the Netherlands as he prepared for round three of the 2013 World Superbike championship. Leon was taken to hospital in Assen where X-rays confirmed fractures to both his tibia and fibula in his lower left leg. Pata Honda’s Dutch rider Michael van der Mark delivered another impressive ride in this Saturday’s third-round World Supersport race in his home race at Assen, finishing fourth.

Castrol-backed Bautista 8th in Austin MotoGP

After establishing a good feeling for his bike on Saturday, Castrol-backed GO&FUN Honda rider Alvaro Bautista was hoping for better than the eighth place finish he managed in the Grand Prix of the Americas. Twenty-year-old Spaniard Marc Màrquez has become the youngest ever winner of a MotoGP race after fending off team-mate Dani Pedrosa in the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas.

Bautista was in the mix with the second group for the first half of the race, but lost confidence with his bike in the later laps and dropped back.

“I was expecting a better race after the feeling I had with the bike yesterday in qualifying and honestly thought I could even improve my pace today, but the bike was moving around and I

In the end, after pulling back two seconds on Dovizioso, I got into a nice battle with him, but in the last corner I made a mistake and he passed me. It’s a shame, but we have chance to make up for it in a couple of weeks in my home Grand Prix at Jerez, a place and circuit that I really like.”

Ben Bray has set a new world record time for a four cylinder sedan with a blistering 6.807 second run at 325.72kph (202.39mph) in his Nissan Altima at Willowbank Raceway. The run came in extremely hot conditions, not usually conducive to quick times, after earlier in the day setting a 6.86 second run. Naturally, Bray was ecstatic.

“When we went down the track for the first time that day and set the 6.86 second pass at 202 miles per hour, that saw us just two tenths off the national record and things were looking good,” said Bray. “When we next headed out on track at 2.30pm the temperatures were high, providing a less than ideal environment for record-breaking performances. Despite that though, we were able to hammer down the track with

the 6.807 second pass at 202.39 miles per hour, snatching not just the Australian record from my mate Michael Baghdadi but also the world record for my car’s engine type. To say I was elated was an understatement. We had changed the gear ratios and the transmission after the Sydney Jamboree and were confident of a good showing, but this just smashed all of our expectations for the day and really made all the late nights worthwhile!

Crew Chief, Anthony Vloedmans led the team celebration from the startline. “Everyone here at Team Bray Racing including Benny have worked so hard to first crack that ‘six second’ marker and then to go after the record,” said Vloedmans. “To achieve that at Willowbank Raceway at the weekend was

just phenomenal, I don’t mind saying that I had a hard time containing myself over Ben’s two-way radio as he crossed the finish line – what a brilliant result!”

The Altima will sit out for a time now whilst Bray and his legendary father Victor take to more familiar surrounds of their Top Doorslammers for the Nitro Champs at Sydney Dragway over the weekend of May 3-5.

Burnouts and Brays return to V8 Supercars

With less than 60 days until Darwin’s Skycity Triple Crown event, it has been confirmed by event promoters that Castrol-backed Team Bray Racing will be part of the official on-track entertainment

delivering their signature smoky burnouts to the delight of V8 Supercar fans.

TBR’s Victor and Ben Bray have previously been a ‘must-see’ part of the entertainment program at many V8 Supercar events around the country, with their rubber-burning performances earning them a solid reputation amongst race-goers. Now TBR is delighted to confirm that with the help of Skycity Triple Crown event promoter Northern Territory Major Events, both Victor and Ben are set to deliver their signature thrills to race fans at Hidden Valley Raceway across June 14-16.

“We have had some fantastic times at V8 Supercar events around the country and we know the fans absolutely love what we do with our burnout cars, so I am absolutely stoked to be officially signed up for the Hidden Valley Raceway event this June,” said Victor. “It has been two years since we smoked them up at Hidden Valley, so I am really looking forward to getting back to the track and putting on a good show for the fans.”

Event promoter and Northern Territory Major Events General Manager Paul Cattermole said he couldn’t’ wait to welcome the Brays back to the Northern Territory.

“Victor and I have known each other for many years and I can tell you – there is no need to sell the name Victor Bray in the Northern Territory, he is very well known here and I know the fans are going to come out in droves to see him and Ben in action each day of the SkyCity Triple Crown,” said Cattermole. “The event is shaping up to be absolutely fantastic as always, and if you haven’t been to Hidden Valley before I really can’t encourage you enough to come and experience it – when you arrive it is like a mirage, it is just a beautiful facility and one of the jewels of Australian motorsport. With a world class drag strip running parallel as well – you never know, one day we might be able to see Top Doorslammers those owned by Victor and Ben running simultaneously to the V8 Supercars, wouldn’t that be something!”

It is unusual to see V8 Supercars on the streets of Surfers Paradise outside October, however that is what greeted holiday makers on their Wednesday morning stroll on the glitter strip today as a Castrol-backed Finance EZI’s fleet of racecars made its way from central Surfers to a gala lunch at the Marriott Resort and Spa. Finance EZI has established arguably the most comprehensive junior development program in Australian motorsport and its contingent of black and yellow V8 Supercars left Marriott guests wondering who was checking into the world-renowned hotel as the 635-horsepower V8 Supercars roared to a standstill at the hotel’s valet parking area.

Barely allowed to hold a provisional license on the roads they travelled through, Finance EZI’s pair of 17-year-old V8 superstars from the Dunlop V8

Supercar Development Series - Josh Hunter and Andre Heimgartner - piloted their racecars on a very different street circuit to the one they raced just one month ago in Adelaide. Josh’s grandfather, Garry Rush, is regarded as the greatest Sprintcar driver Australia has ever produced and was heavily supported by Castrol throughout his Sprintcar career. The pair are preparing for the next round of the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth, May 3-5.

Finance EZI will enter the single-make Suzuki Swift Racing Series with a very familiar name, but an unfamiliar face in Ben Grice. Grice is a Gold Coast local and son of 1986 and 1990 Bathurst 1000 Champion, Allan Grice. Whilst not taking the traditional karting path in his youth, Grice is now trying to forge his own path in motor racing. He will start

his first race under the Finance EZI colours at Mallala in South Australia this weekend.

Multiple State Karting Champion, Damian Ward pilots the Finance EZI Aussie Racing Car. The irony of Ward is that by day, he drives one of the biggest rigs around - a gargantuan mining truck, but by weekend, he is in the smallest car on the racetracks of Australia! Having completed two rounds of the National Championship, he’s finished both on the cusp of the top 10. The final car in the lineup, fittingly keeping a watch over his flock ahead, was another Ford V8 Supercar, that is usually driven by team owner, well-known Car Dealer and Managing Director of Finance EZI, Maurie Pickering. Pickering is racing in the Kumho V8 Touring Car Series for retired V8 Supercars

Castrol-backed John Force Racing team leader and 15-time Funny Car champion John Force was the team’s best driver at the latest round of the Mello-Yello NHRA Funny Car series - the O’Reilly Spring Nationals. Force, the 2002 Funny Car winner at the O’Reilly Spring Nationals, took out Blake Alexander in the first round before dropping a close race to veteran Tim Wilkerson. Becoming the first driver to win two Mello Yello NHRA Funny Car events in 2013 has seen Cruz Pedregon re-assert his lead in the Championship points standings beating home Tim Wilkerson.

The leader in the points for John Force Racing sophomore sensation Courtney Force lost to Alexis DeJoria in the first

round. It was a rematch of last season’s first round and this time the driver of the Tequila Patron Toyota outran a tire smoking Traxxas Mustang piloted by Force. The second year driver held onto her Mello Yello top five position despite her early exit. She is only a handful of rounds out of second place in the point standings. Force qualified in the top half of the field on Friday in the No. 5 spot and was 2-0 against DeJoria in previous match-ups. This time the green and black car took the win.

“All in all, I think we did an okay job this weekend. We made two consistent qualifying runs on Friday. This race makes the second event in a row that we were shorted two shots to qualify. Those are

really important to figure out the track and get your set-up right,” said Force.

The AAA Texas Mustang of Robert Hight made a strong showing in qualifying, grabbing the No.3 position, but unfortunately with only two rounds of qualifying due to weather it did not give the team much info. Strong thunder storms blew through the area on Saturday and conditions were dramatically different for all the teams as they took the track this morning. The Castrol EDGE Top Fuel dragster piloted by Brittany Force missed the tough field for the first time in 2013. The entire contingent of JFR race cars will be in Atlanta for the Summit Racing Southern Nationals next weekend.

Mark Robinson has taken his second consecutive Australian V8 Dirt Modified Title at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway leading home Kevin Britten and Victorian Mick Kiraly. Robinson took his Castrol EDGE-backed machine to the lead on the 10th lap and from there surged forward to take a strong victory - his third time as Australia #1.

After suffering a blown engine last weekend, Kiraly put in a superb performance on the tight Brisbane track to secure third placing. Fourth went to another Victorian in Daniel Scott, whilst rounding out the top five was pole sitter, David Clarke. Robinson had to hang tough through a number of late race restarts to take the win.

“ Man I didn’t think that was possible” said a very happy Robinson post-race. “ We thought it would have went a lot slicker than it did and the car was really tight for those first few laps and after that it really started coming on. I said to the guys that we really needed to put pressure on and be aggressive early on and that’s what we did. And when the opportunities arose we were right there, momentum was happening and we were able to make the pass.”

It was a highly emotional victory for the Lismore (Northern New South Wales) based team with the entire family on hand, with his young daughter having battled illness throughout the last 12 months. It also coupled with the weekend of his wedding anniversary. In a double Australian Championship evening in Brisbane, Mark Lincoln won the Australian AMCA Nationals Championship from Tim Reidy.
