Places
What is a Place?
“Space is transformed into ‘place’ when humans
give it bounds and believe it has value”
Wolf, K.L., S. Krueger, and K. Flora. 2014. Place Attachment and Meaning - A Literature Review. In: Green Cities: Good
Health. College of the Environment, University of Washington.
What is a Place?
Location
Occupies a set of geographic coordinates, takes up physical space in three dimensions
e.g. a 3-story building, a 100-acre lot, a 25-mile stretch of road
Context
It exists in relation to something else
e.g. in the city of Philadelphia, across the street from Whole Foods, on the shore of Lake Michigan
Purpose
It exists to represent something, provide a service, or share information
e.g. a residential apartment, a historic monument, an electronics store
Our Connection to Places
Every place has a unique connection to an individual. We can divide them into 3 main categories…
• Childhood Home | City you lived in during your college years | Island where you spent your honeymoon
Personal
• Church or religious site | Symbol of patriotism | Symbol of a cause you feel passionate about
Emotional
• Store you stop at on the way home | Neighborhood you need to live in because of budgetary needs
Practical
What types of connections can you create?
Physical
Something we experience in person
Virtual
Something experienced remotely or through an external interface
Relational
Something we experience remotely or in a physically abstract way
(traveling towards/away, too big to experience as a whole)
Stories create a
connection
between people &
places
