the value of your BMW in the long term and increasing your

BMW Care Products: Wheel rim cleaning:

A polished finish all-round.

Road soiling and accumulated brake dust on riginal BMW

light alloy wheels? It doesn’t just look unattractive, it can also

cause deeper damage: residue and brake dust eats into the

surface, leaving ugly discolouration which is very difficult to

get rid o . Regular cleaning and care is required in order to

ensure that the rims always retain a fresh shine.

Application tips:

- Avoid allowing the cleaning agent to dry and do not use the

product in direct sunlight or immediately a ter the vehicle

has been driven for a long period, when the wheel rims arestill hot.

- Before cleaning, ensure that your cleaning utensils are in

working order. Don’t use dirty brushes.

Rinse o the cleaning agent thoroughly so that nothing o

it is le t. Pay care ul attention to surrounding parts such as

brake discs, too.

- Afterwards, apply some car wash shampoo mixed with water

to the wheel rim so as to avoid scale or water marks orming.

Application tips:

- When you discover bird fouling, resin and tar on the paintwork,

you should remove it immediately. This is because these

substances are aggressive and can solidify within a very

short time, damaging the paintwork layer.

- Insect residue is easier to remove if you take a piece of soft

paper tissue sprayed with insect remover and lay it over the

residue for a maximum of 5 minutes first.

- When you use insect, tree resin or tar remover, the protective

sealing layer on the paintwork is always removed too. So you

should also reseal the paintwork surfaces treated.

- In the case of extreme soiling you can also use a high-pressure

cleaner for greater effect. This washes away the coarse dirt and

penetrates all corners. Be sure to hold it at a sufficient distance

from the vehicle so as not to damage the paintwork.

Note: Do not spray into gaps or onto the sensitive engine

electronics. After spraying, wipe off sills, seals and entry sills.

Paintwork pre-cleaning:

How to get rid of stubborn dirt.

Vehicle care is only truly effective if it is comprehensive. It

starts with pre-cleaning: here, stubborn soiling is removed

using special products where car wash shampoo would not

be strong enough.

Since there are different types of soiling, you should use the

specifically appropriate cleaning agents. Insect remover, tar

remover and tree resin remover ensure that the paintworksurface is not damaged by aggressive residues.

Pre-cleaning also prepares the paintwork surface for the

main wash, polishing and waxing.

Pre-wash with high-pressure cleaner

in the case of heavy soiling.

Washing the paintwork – child’s play

if you have the right products.

Indulge your BMW with a health cure now and again – you will

notice the difference. This is because regular washing protects

the paintwork and retains colour intensity. It is better not to use

automatic car washes since their brushes often leave wafer-thin

scratches which give the paintwork a matt impression after a

while.

Manual washing removes light soiling from the paintwork

surface much more gently. You can wash your car at self-service

wash stations too, if you like. Applying a soft cloth or sponge

and a protective car wash shampoo is excellent treatment for

any paintwork.

A thorough wash also perfectly prepares the paintwork for a

subsequent polish or sealing.

Foldable all-purpose bucket.The versatile folding bucket is made

of robust, waterproof polyester

fabric. This makes it ideal not just

as a car wash accessory but also

as a practical contain for car care

products or for shopping items.

The bucket easily folds up and can

be stowed away in a special carrier

bag to save space. Capacity: 11 litres.

Application tips:

- Only use clean and intact utensils and be sure to renew the

washing water frequently. Worn out sponges, dirty brushes

and soiled water can cause fine scratches.

- Save cleaner by rinsing off the coarse dirt first with plenty

of warm water.

- You can get rid of heavier soiling by giving the car a thorough

foaming and leaving the foam to soak in for a short time.- Rinse off the foam with plenty of water and then dry the

vehicle thoroughly with a soft leather cloth.

- Never wash your vehicle in direct sunlight and keep the

paintwork permanently wet.

- Lighter soiling on the step-boards of BMW X models can be

removed using car wash shampoo; in the case of heavier

soiling (e.g. surface rust) use surface rust remover.

Polishing – the gloss program

for your BMW.

If you use the right care products you can give your vehicle a

mirror finish. This is because polishing not only removes the

stubborn soiling (e.g. surface rust) which resisted the pre-cleaning

and wash stages, it also irons out tiny spots of surface damage

(e.g. scratches from car wash brushes), so even paling or weathered

paintwork is given a new lease of life. By using abrasives and

care products, you can restore the vehicle’s original shine and

thus contribute to retaining the value of your BMW.

Application tips:

- Only ever polish paintwork you have thoroughly cleaned

beforehand.

- Never apply polish to hot paintwork or in direct sunlight,

so as to prevent excessively fast drying.

- Apply the polish thinly and evenly with light pressure

and work in small, circular movements: only this way will

the abrasives develop their full effect.

- Work in small sections. Allow the polish to take effect briefly

then shine up the area treated using the BMW Polishing cloth.

Paintwork structure and paintwork care:

Sealing – protection program

for your paintwork.

To protect your paintwork f rom harmful environmental impact,

you should regularly seal your BMW with wax. You can tell

whether the paintwork requires a new protective coat by looking

at how water rolls off. If it forms small, round beads the protective

layer is still intact. As soon as the water spreads continuously

over the paintwork, the vehicle should be resealed. This protects

the paintwork from environmental impact and scratches.

Application tips:

- Only seal thoroughly cleaned paintwork surfaces.

- Never apply wax to hot paintwork or in direct sunlight,

so as to avoid quick drying.

- Apply the wax thinly and evenly. Work in small sections

and wax in small, circular movements. Allow the wax to

take effect briefly then shine up the area treated using

the BMW Polishing cloth.

- When the wax has dried, buffing may cause clouds or

streaks to form. If so, apply the wax a second time and

work quickly so as to prevent the wax from drying.

- Rewax horizontal areas such as the bonnet more

frequently since these are more exposed to the sunlight.

The windows also contribute to the outer appearance of your

BMW. What is more, dirty windows can pose a safety risk: even

a light film of dirt on the window can seriously impair visibility,

especially in poor weather conditions.

It is also especially important to add a cleaning agent to the

water in the windscreen wiper system which removes dirt

quickly and without forming streaks. In winter, antifreeze is

also required so as to prevent the windscreen wiper system

from freezing and the windscreen from icing up.

Application tips:

- Common household products should not be used to remove

the various types of soiling which forms on car windows

(e.g. dust). The only way to obtain a perfect shine without

streak formation is by completely removing all dirt. The BMW

windscreen cleaning agents have been specially developed

for this purpose.

- In larger models, the BMW glass cleaner with telescopic

handle and continuously variable handle length facilitates

the removal of coarse and fine dirt.

- Remember to clean your headlamps and rear lights, too.

Windscreen wash tabs.

Concentrated windscreen cleaner

(without antifreeze) in tablet form can

be added to the windscreen cleaning

water so as to enhance cleaning

Winter time is care time:

The winter puts the paintwork, wheel rims, upholstery and

carpets of your vehicle to a tough test. Regular and intensive

care is the best way to protect it from lasting damage during

the cold season.

- Road salt can corrode the paintwork – regular car washing

and preservation of the paintwork with wax effectively

prevents damage.

- It is particularly important to clean the windows of your

vehicle and the headlamps. Iced up windows and dirty

headlamps often cause poor visibility on winter days.

Therefore it is a good idea to clean the windows andheadlamps regularly so that you can see and be seen

more effectively.

- Your wheel rims also require special care in winter – regular

cleaning ensures that the wheel rims are not corroded by

road salt.

- Pay careful attention to the upholstery and carpets, too –

impregnation provides protection from moisture and soiling,

thereby ensuring that the materials breath naturally and

retain their suppleness.

A shiny look for the summer:

There are several points to look out for in the summer, too:

- The paintwork is especially exposed to the sun, wind and dust

during the summer. Regular polishing makes the paintwork

shine; the use of wax has a preserving effect and provides a

deep gloss.

- Stubborn soiling such as insect residue and tree resin also

attack the paintwork. Always remove this type of dirt right away

using the appropriate cleaning agent.
