Cao oks lateral entry, UPIS to accept 14 new freshies
Last February, UP Diliman Chancellor,
Dr. Sergio Cao approved the reopening of
lateral admission at Grade 7 (1st year high
school) to fill the slots to be vacated by
Grade 6 students who have been accepted
and have opted to enrol in Science High
Schools.
The order specifies five slots for varsity
scholarship (basketball) and the rest (nine
slots for the coming school year) for gen-
eral admissions procedures.
Chancellor Cao’s action was in re-
sponse to appeals by the UP Maroons
coaching staff to allow them to recruit play-
ers for the junior basketball team from
other schools.
Lateral admission at Grade 7 was sus-
pended several years ago by then Chancel-
lor (now President) Emerlinda Roman citing
Commission of Higher Education orders to
downsize the student population of labora-
tory schools of state colleges and univer-
sity. This led to the UPIS Faculty's decision
to suspend varsity admissions two years
ago.
According to the guidelines released by
the UPIS Admissions Committee, non-
varsity applicants should be currently en-
rolled in grade 6 or grade 7 (in institutions
offering elementary education up to grade
7). They should also have an average grade
of 85% (or its equivalent in another grading
system) for the first three quarters of this
school year.
An admission test was administered to
these applicants last March 28, 2009.
The guidelines for varsity admissions
have yet to be issued by the committee
tasked to handle the matter.

Speculations end, DPWH widens Katipunan
Speculations about the widening
of Katipunan Avenue in front of the
UPIS 7-10 campus ended Thursday
(February 12, 2009) when the Depart-
ment of Public Works and Highways
(DPWH) set up markers to mark the
future site of UPIS' perimeter fence.
After a meeting with Vice Chancel-
lor Grace Gregorio, the Campus Archi-
tect, DPWH representatives and the
contractor, UPIS Principal Dr. Aurora
Zuñiga, informed all concerned UPIS
stakeholders (through a letter dated
February 12, 2009) about the extent of
the construction that will take place.
According to Dr. Zuniga, a perime-
ter fence will be built 10.5 meters
away from the nearest buidling
(Buidling 1). The fence will cover the
entire frontage of the UPIS 7-10 cam-
pus which starts at CP Garcia and ends
at the Health Education Building. The
fence in front of Building 1 will be
made of concrete since it will be near-
est the road. The rest of the fence will
be made out of cyclone wire. For secu-
rity reasons, construction of the pe-
rimeter fence will be finished before
the road widening.
A pedestrian overpass or foot
bridge will also be constructed across
Katipunan at Quirino Street (the street
between Narra Residence Hall and the
College of Home Economcs). To ensure
the security and safety of UPIS stu-
dents, faculty and staff who will use
the foot bridge, the bridge will start
inside the perimeter fence. Also, the
bridge will be constructed in such a
way that security guards on the UPIS
end and barangay tanods who will be
posted at the Home Economics end
will have a clear view of all persons
using the foot bridge.
The basketball court, which will
end up only a few meters from the
road, will be repositioned and rehabili-
tated. Like the perimeter fence and
pedestrian overpass, the repositioning
of the basketball court were also in-
cluded in the cost of the road widening
project. Also included in the project is
the balling and transplanting of trees
that will be affected.
DPWH estimates that the project
will be completed in only three
months so expect heavier than usual
traffic in front of the UPIS until April.

Nagkaroon ng isang parenting
seminar na pinamagatang “Instilling an
Attitude of Success in Our Children”
noong Nobyembre 15, 2008, 9:00 n.u.
sa Multi-purpose Hall. Maagang nag-
simula ang registration sa tulong ng
mga peer facilitators. Halos 300 katao
ang dumalo sa araw na iyon.
Sinimulan ang seminar ng isang
panalangin. Pagkatapos ng pamban-
sang awit ay ang pag-welcome ni Gng.
Stella Pauline DS. Pascual, Puno ng
Departamento ng Paglilingkod sa Mag-
aaral. Pinasalamatan din niya ang UPIS
administration at PTA officers sa
kanilang suporta para makapagdaos ng
isang parenting seminar sa taon na ito.
Ipinakilala naman ni Gng. Mary Grace
DP. Espinosa ang pangunahing taga-
pagsalita na si Dr. Lilian L. Juadiong.
Si Dr. Juadiong o
Teacher Lilian ay
isang propesor sa UP
Child Development
Center. Madalas din
siyang kinukuhang
resource person sa
mga t.v. shows tulad
ng “Moms” at “Mel &
Jay”.
bawat magulang. Ayon sa kanya, im-
portante ang attitude para maging
matagumpay sa buhay ang isang bata.
Marami rin daw importanteng matutu-
tunan ang isang bata sa kanyang mga
failures.
Matapos ang open forum ay ibini-
gay ni Dr. Aurora C. Matias, PTA Presi-
dent, ang sertipiko ng pasasalamat kay
Dr. Juadiong para sa kanyang oras at
expertise. Natapos ang seminar ban-
dang 10:30 n.u.

Dalawang gawain na ang naisa-
gawa ng Extension Committee sa pa-
mumuno ni Prop. Diana Ferrer. Noong
Setyembre 29, 2008 ay pinukaw ng
mga panauhing tagapagsalita mula sa
dating Ugnayan ng Pahinungod at Jes-
uit’s Volunteer Group ng Ateneo de
Manila University ang mga puso ng
ilang estudyante at titsers sa UPIS ukol
sa bolunterismo.
Layunin ng Extension Committee
na bumuo ng grupo ng mga volunteers
na pupunta at magkukuwento sa ilang
Daycare Center (DCC) malapit sa UPIS
sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Departament
of Social Work and Development, Que-
zon City Hall.
Noong Nobyembre 4, 2008 ng
hapon ay nagkaroon ng Storytelling
Seminar Workshop. Ito ay pinanguna-
han nina Bb. Daisy Cunanan, Bb. Ysa
Zuñiga, at Bb. Sab
Par ng K-2 Depart-
ment ng UPIS.
Mayroong apat na
estudyante mula
sa elementary at
labing-apat naman
mula sa high
school na galling
sa iba’t ibang or-
ganisasyon tulad
ng Kamag-Aral 7-10, Freshman Asso-
ciation, Junior Association, Peer Facili-
tators Club, Science Club at YRAP ang
dumalo.
Nakakatuwa at nakakaaliw ang
Storytelling seminar workshop na ibini-
gay ng mga guro sa K-2. Naengganyo
nang husto ang mga bata sa pagku-
wento dahil nakita nilang masaya at
puno ng emosyon ang pagbabasa ng
mga guro. Hindi naman nagpahuli ang
mga bata nang sila naman ang magku-
wento at maghanda ng mga gawain
kaugnay sa binasa nilang kuwento.
Lahat sila ay excited na magkuwento
sa UP Pook Amorsolo DCC at sa Pansol
DCC. Nagsimula na sila noong No-
byembre 24, 2008 at tatlong beses
nang nakakapagkuwento sa mga bata
sa dalawang Daycare.

Dam Ecopark sa Fairview, Quezon City
at sa U.P.I.S. 7-10 building noong Oktu-
bre 27-28, 2009 sa pamumuno ng ta-
gapayo na si Gng. Mary Grace DP.
Espinosa.
Sinimulan ang araw na iyon ng
isang maikling panalangin. Sumunod
ay ang oryentasyon kung saan ang
bawat miyembro ay binigyan ng check-
list at schedule of activities. Nagka-
roon din ng gawain kung saan nabi-
gyan ng pagkakataon ang bawat isa na
makilala ang iba pang mga kamiyem-
bro. Maraming gawain ang inihanda
sa araw na iyon. Tinalakay din ang
roles at functions ng isang peer facili-
tator.
Matapos ang tanghalian, sumabak
na ang mga bagong miyembro kasama
ang datihang miyembro na ‘di pa naka-
pag-training noon, sa isang mala-
amazing race na gawain na susubok sa
kanilang team building, communica-
tion at conflict resolution skills. Ang
kanilang amazing race ay mayroon 7
stations – rope courses, log shift, fear
factor, caterpillar
walk, flower pic-
ture taking, he-
lium stick, at
scavenger hunt.
Pagdating ng 5:oo
n.h. ay naghanda
nang bumalik sa
UPIS ang lahat
para makapag-
hapunan. Bini-
gyan din ang
bawat grupo ng
oras para makapagsanay ng kanilang

pinakaaabangang trust fall activity.
Matapos ang trust fall at talent show
ay natulog na ang lahat sa new build-
ing kasama ang mga guidance counsel-
ors na sina Bb. Laarni M. Cabrales at
Bb. Catherine O. Espero.
Kinabukasan, maagang nag-
ehersisyo ang mga peer facilitators
bago mag-almusal. PInag-usapan din
ang mga gawain ng nakaraang araw at
inugnay iyon sa mga topics tulad ng
team building, communication at con-
flict resolution. Tinalakay ni Bb. Cath-
erine O. Espero ang basic counseling
skills at si Gng. Mary Grace DP.
Espinosa ang sa facilitating skills.
Matapos noon ay nagkaroon ng ebal-
wasyon ng mga gawain para sa 2 araw
na training. Nagkaroon din ng simple
ngunit makahulugang awarding para
sa mga miyembro at mga guidance
counselors, sa pamumuno ng Depart-
ment Head na si Gng. Stella Pauline

Balitang Scouts
Ang taunang Scouts Parade ay
muling isinagawa noong Pebrero 24,
2009 at dinaluhan ito ng iba’t ibang
unit ng mga iskawt ng UPIS, kabilang
ang KAB Scouts, Star Scouts, Boy at
Senior Scouts, Junior at Senior Girl
Scouts. Ang gawaing ito ang naging
handog ng Scouting Movement ng
UPIS sa pagdiriwang ng Diliman
Month, sa pangunguna ng UPIS Scout-
ing Committee (UPISCOM), katuwang
ng KABALIKAT Foundation. Ang Chan-
cellor ng Unibersidad ang taunang
panauhing tagapagsalita sa gawaing
ito.
Nagmartsa ang mga iskawt mula
UPIS 3-6 building patungo sa Quezon
Hall. Bilang bahagi ng pro-
grama, nagbigay ng
“thought for the day” ang
kinatawan ng bawat unit ng
mga iskawt. Ginawaran din
ng parangal sa mga Hu-
warang Iskawt, kabilang
sina Marianne T. Sasing
(Star), Frances Danielle S.
Candido (KAB), Gianelli Kristina L. Nasis
(Junior Girl Scout), Melvin Ariel T.
Sanggalang (Boy Scout), Ma. Shiela Lei
B. Belgira (Senior Girl Scouts), at Justin
Paulo C. Vicente (Senior Scout).
Samantala, binigyang-pagkilala bilang
Scout Leader sina Prof. Melanie M.
Donkor na binigyan ng Gawad Ka-
balikat, at si Prof. Catalina S. Salazar
na tumanggap ng Prof. Eleanor Eme E.
Hermosa Service Award. Nagbigay rin
ng natatanging bilang ang UP Cheru-
bim at Seraphim. Ang opisina ng Vice
Chancelor for Community Affairs ang
nagmahala ng meryenda.

Pebrero 20, tumulak ang 54 na
Boy Scouts kasama ang kanilang li-
mang Troop leaders, patungong Phil-
ippine Marines Base Camp sa Ternate,
Cavite upang doon ganapin ang tau-
nang camp ng UPIS Scouting Move-
ment. Kasama ng mga girl scouts, tu-
mungo sila sa kampo ng Marines sa
Fort Bonifacio para sa isang courtesy
call. Dito nagkaroon ng maikling pro-
grama kung saan ipinakita ng mga Ma-
rines ang isang Silent Drill. Dito ipi-
nakita nila ang disiplina, pagkakaisa at
kooperasyon ng pangkat. Matapos ang
programa, inilibot ng ilang mga Ma-
rines ang mga scouts sa paligid ng
kanilang kampo. Tumulak na sa Cavite
ang grupo pagkatapos ng programa.
Nagkaroon ng pagkakataon ang
mga scouts na makihalubilo sa mga
marinong nagsasanay at nag-aaral
doon. Tinulungan silang tumawid sa
mga rope course, mag-
rapelling at tumawid sa
mga obstacle course. Buong
siglang hinarap ng mga
scouts ang mga hamon na
ito. Nagkaroon din sila ng
pagkakataong matuto ng
compass reading mula sa
mismong senior trainor ng mga Ma-
rines. Mula naman sa mga boy leaders
ay natuto silang gumamit ng flash light
bilang signal sa pamamagitan ng
morse code.
Maliban sa mga natutunan nila
mula sa mga Marines, natuto din ang
mga scouts na makisama sa kanilang
mga kapwa. Natutunan din nilang
makipagtulungan sa kanilang kapwa sa
mga gawaing itinakda sa kanila tulad
ng pagluluto, pag-iigib, paglilinis at
paghuhugas ng pinagkainan. Nagka-
roon din sila ng pagkakataong magsaya
sa pamamagitan ng mga water games
sa tulong ni Prop. Mabaquiao.
Ito ang unang pagkakataon na
nakasama ang mga grade 4 scouts sa-
taunangl camp ng boy scouts simula
nang nalipat ang grade four mula sa
KAB Scout papuntang Boy Scout. Ito ay
isang dagdag na responsibilidad na
nagampanan naman ng mga na-
kakatatandang boy scouts.
Sa kabuuan ay naging matagum-
pay ang taunang camp, salamat sa
tulong ng mga guro at magulang na
umalalay sa mga boy scouts.

-Dagat PTA President) sa lahat ng mga
dumalo noong araw na iyon. Pina-
munuan ni Marianne T. Sasing (3-
Dagat President) ang pagdarasal at
pinamunuan ni Gian Angela M. Garcia
(3-Ilog President) ang pambansang
awit. Matapos noon ay nagbigay ng
pambungad na
pananalita si G.
Richard O. de
Guzman (Gr. 3
PTA President).
P i n a m u n u a n
naman ni Denice
Ann S. Palicte (3-

ang panunumpa ng manlalaro.
Bago magsimula ang mga palaro
at presentasyon ng bawat seksyon,
nagkaroon muna ng cheering competi-
tion ang bawat seksyon kasama ang
mga magulang ng mga bata. Ang 3-
Ilog ang nanalo sa nasabing cheering
competition base sa desisyon ng lahat
ng homeroom advisers at grade level
guidance counselor.
Marami ring masasaya at
makapigil-hiningang palaro ang ini-
handa para sa araw na iyon tulad ng
sack race, pass the ball, at family goes
to market. Matapos ang mga palaro
ay naghandog ang bawat seksyon ng
kanta at sayaw.
Bago pa magtanghalian at mag-
swimming sa hapon ay ipinamigay na
ang loot bags sa mga estudyante. Nag-
bigay din ng pangwakas na pananalita
si Prop. April Daphne F. Hiwatig (GLC
at 3-Dagat adviser). Pinasalamatan
niya ang mga Grade Level Advisers at
Class PTA Officers sa kanilang suporta
at tulong para matagumpay na mai-
daos ang taunang family day ng Batch
2016.

UPISSCA, SP at CWF, nag-outreach sa Bulacan Vilma M. Resuma
Noong ika-7 ng Marso 2009, ang
mga miyembro ng UPIS Student Catho-
lic Action at Sangguniang Pangwika,
kasama ang klase ng Creative Writing
(Filipino), ay nagsagawa ng isang out-
reach project sa isang ampunan sa
Bustos, Bulacan.
Binisita ng grupo ang San Martin
de Porres, isang ampunang may ma-
higit na 70 batang ulila at
“abandoned.” Dala nila ang mga
damit, pagkain (bigas, de lata, noodles,
atbp), gamot, laruan at iba pang
donasyon ng mga estudyante at guro
ng UPIS. Kabilang sa mga naging ga-
wain ang isahan at/o pangkatang “pag-
aalaga” sa mga batang ampon, pag-
daraos ng masayang programa, at
isang maikling pagninilay sa kapilya ng
ampunan.
Para sa 53 estudyante, dalawang
guro at dalawang kawaning nakasama
sa outreach activity na ito, naging ma-
bunga at tunay na kasiya-siya ang pag-
dalaw at pagbibigay-halaga sa mga
batang ulila.

paki-pakinabang na miyembro ng paaralan at pamayanan.
The other side of Ma’am Taling
kakayahan at talento.

I support the decision of the UP
Chancellor to allow LATERAL ENTRY.
First, this will enhance the aca-
demic competition among UPIS stu-
dents. It is expected that those who
will be admitted are academic achiev-
ers in their respective schools. Only
those with 85% or higher are quali-
fied to take the entrance test. I sup-
pose the 9 qualifiers for this year are
the cream of the crop and will give
the “originals” a fair challenge in aca-
demic field.
Second, this will fill the slots va-
cated by excellent Grade 6 students
who were admitted to science high
schools. If you lost the top 9 students,
you have to replace them with stu-
dents with equally or more superior
genes. Pag walang ipalit na kasing
galing ng mga umalis, magkakaroon
ng “brain drain”.
Third, this will improve the UP-
CAT performance of UPIS. According
to the official UPIS statement, stu-
dents who enter at kindergarten have
45% chance of qualifying in the UP-
CAT. On the other hand, those who
enter at grade 7 have a 75% chance
of qualifying. I think what prompted
the UP Chancellor to allow again this
lateral entry is the disappointing per-
formance of UPIS students in the UP-
CAT in recent years. This year, ang
sabi, only around 40 percent from
UPIS G-10 passed the UPCAT.
But the reform should also cover
the UPIS Kindergarten Admission
Test. THERE MUST BE A UNIFORM
CUT-OFF SCORES for children of UP
Personnel and children of Non-UP
personnel. I gathered from an earlier
posting in this website that in the
2008 UPIS Kinder admission test, the
lowest score of accepted children of
Non-UP personnel is 45 (that's out of
50 questions). Actually, 33 applicants
got score of 46 and above, while 26
applicants got score of 45. Only 7 of
the 26 (with score of 45) were admit-
ted to complete the quota of 40.
On the other hand, the lowest
score of accepted applicant children
of UP Personnel is just 29 (out of 50
questions). Clearly, UPIS is accepting
at Kindergarten less than stellar per-
formers from the children of UP per-
sonnel to fill the quota. (This is the
description of the “Administrator”
May 5, 2008 message)
Now, if it is true that only 40% of
UPIS G-10 examinees passed the UP-
CAT this year, it is good to know who
are these UPCAT passers--- how many
are children of Non-UP personnel and
how many are children of UP person-
nel? Is there a significant difference
in UPCAT performance of these two
groups?

This year, the UPIS Girl Scouting
movement adapted its theme from the
hit TV program "Survivor". The 134
girl scouts (30 juniors, 76 seniors, and
28 cadets) are indeed survivors in their
own respect.
They travelled for long hours, en-
dured the intense heat of the sun,
slept in tents, and coped with their
patrols all for the honor of being a girl
scout and all these happened during
the GSP Annual Camp from February
20 to 22 at the Philippine Marine Base
in Ternate, Cavite.
Of course, the three-day camp
would not have been successful with-
out the activities carefully planned by
the cadets under Prof. Portia Dima-
buyu's guidance.
Day 1
En route to the camp site, the
team of scouts dropped by Fort Boni-
facio for a courtesy call to the marine
commandant who generously wel-
comed the scouts to use the Marine
Base grounds and facilities for free! In
the afternoon of the first day at the
camp site, marine officers gave a lec-
ture on land navigation and orienteer-
ing. The girl scouts were also given the
chance to use the navigating instru-
ments and techniques during their
orienteering exercise. At night, the
cadets facilitated the overall sensory
test to enhance the scout's sensory
skills towards their environment.
Day 2
The physical agility of the scouts
was put to test through rope courses,
r a p p e l l i n g , a n d m o u n t a i n -
trekking. Towards the end of the sec-
ond day, the scouts had their campfire
to give way for their creative perform-
ances, bravery test to help overcome
their fears, and the “Scouts’ Own” to
give scouts their personal moments of
silence while communing with nature
and its Creator.
Day 3
After getting a little rest, the
scouts woke up to a challenging yet
fun amazing race. This was followed by
water activities at the beach. They also
made crafts out of the trash they col-
lected all over the area which gave
them opportunity to practice recycling.
Shortly before departure, an awarding
ceremony was done to recognize out-
standing scouts and to show apprecia-
tion to those who facilitated the camp.
In a random interview two days
after the camp, scouts expressed what
their most unforgettable experiences
were and what they learned during the
camp. According to Junior Scouts Rani
Ailyna Domingo and Rielle Ruiz, they
liked the rope course and “…kasi na-
kaya naming gawin!” April Rodra De
Castro, a senior scout, came to realize
that “mahirap pala ang buhay ng mga
marines…” She also thought that the
skies are rather beautiful to look at in
the province than in the city. Sarah
Romero learned the value of hard
work and caring for Mother Earth.
Gidell Palos, a scout cadet, under-
stood that enormous time, collective
effort, detailed planning, and careful
implementation, are just few of the
requirements for having a smooth and
successful undertaking. She also dis-
covered through their little chats and
“bull sessions” a rather disturbing fact
that UPIS scouts, as young as they are,
are confronted with problems that
seem too serious for their age.
Asked what makes titas (faculty
escorts and advisers) committed to
scouting, the titas said letting the
scouts experience camping and help-
ing scouts learn the values of the GSP
were worth their sacrifices.
This year’s GSP Annual Camp
proved once more what difference
scouting could make to the lives of the
young.

These are the highlights of activities
involving faculty and students of the UPIS
Department of Science for the second half
of academic year 2008-2009.
UPIS’ B.E.S.T.
The Department of Science, with its
thrust of promoting excellence in basic
science education, extended its arms to
science teachers of other schools in Metro
Manila through a seminar-workshop with
the theme “Building Excellence in Science
Teaching”, held on December 6 and 7,
2008 at the UPIS New Building. The two-
day event began with plenary sessions on
Higher Order Thinking Skills given by Prof.
Rachel Ramirez, and Habits of the Mind by
Prof. Sheryl Lyn Monterola. Research-
based strategies, current classroom prac-
tices, integrative activities, and improvisa-
tion techniques learned and acquired
through years of teaching and research
were then modeled by the department’s
faculty. The participants were distributed
to parallel session groups as follows: 32
Elementary Science; 11 General Science, 17
Biology, 13 Chemistry, and 11 Physics.
The participants went home inspired
and satisfied, giving the workshop an over-
all rating of 4.5 based on a 1-5 scale in
which 5 is the highest.
Also, from this group of organizers
and participant teachers, the Organization
of Elementary and Secondary Science Edu-
cators of the Philippines (OESSEP), Inc. was
born. Prof. Ramirez was elected president
during the first organizational meeting held
right after the closing program of UPIS’
B.E.S.T.
International Year of Astronomy
The International Astronomical Union
and the United Nations Educational, Scien-
tific, and Cultural Organization initiated a
global effort declaring and celebrating
2009 as the International Year of Astron-
omy. In our country, the Astronomical
League of the Philippines held the First
Philippine Astronomical Convention last
February 15 (coinciding with Galileo Gali-
lei’s birthday) at the Rizal Technological
University. Science Society members and
faculty who attended the convention were
enlightened and entertained with lectures
from speakers including Dante Ambrosio,
Ph.D., a physicist and historian from the UP
Diliman College of Social Sciences and Phi-
losophy’s History Department who talked
about Etno-Astronomiya ng Pilipinas, and
the famous Christopher Go, a member of
the Hubble Space Mission, who talked
about the Red Spot Jr. of the planet Jupi-
ter. A public stargazing session in the eve-
ning highlighted the event. The same star
viewing event was supposed to be held on
April 2-5 at the UP Sunken Garden but was
postponed due to weather conditions. This
was part of the global event 100 Hours of
Astronomy when government agencies and
individuals bring out their telescopes at
nighttime on their selected dates for any-
one who would want a view of the cosmos.
Science Clubbing Day
The UPIS Science Club had its science
trip at the Philippine Science Centrum in
Marikina City in the morning of February
16. A total of 64 club members and eight
faculty and student teachers were fasci-
nated by the interactive displays from
which they learned how tidal waves and
cyclones are generated, what their weights
are in the different planets, and why opti-
cal illusions occur. The Science Club offi-
cers, with the leadership of the Committee
Chairman Joshua Philip Suarez, conducted
the SCImazing Race and Tower-Building
Challenge in the afternoon.
BASF Kids’ Lab
On February 26 and 27, students from
grades three to six attended the BASF
(Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik) Kids’ Lab
at the Bulwagan. The program aimed to
raise the students' interest in science and
instill environmental awareness in young
minds through hands-on chemistry experi-
ments. This effort originated from Ger-
many and is one of the Sustainable Devel-
opment activities of BASF The Chemical
Company. Science faculty, student teach-
ers, and Science Society members were
trained and served as facilitators for the
fun and safe experiments. Based on the
comments written by the students on
stickers, the activity was so enjoyable that
they’re even requesting to have more of
this in the future.
Science Congress 2009
To recognize the efforts and skills of
students in doing their year-long investiga-
tive projects, the Science Congress was
held on March 5, 13 and 20. The Science
Congress serves as a venue for students to
present their scientific research outputs,
may it be a simple investigation of phe-
nomenon or a more complex creation of
new products or processes thru experi-
ments. Their oral communication skills
were also enhanced during the final judg-
ing. The winning Science Investigatory
Projects for the different grade levels were:
Katas na Nagmula sa Centella asiatica at
Psidium gujava Bilang Panlunas ng Sugat by
Alliah Denise M. Bron, Loshana Vanica DQ

Grade 6-Amethyst.
Science Interschool Competitions
The department also takes pride for
having students who bagged numerous
distinctions and prizes in different competi-
tions this school year, the latest of which
were the Grand Champion award won by
the team of Fancisco Moreno, Senando
Angelo Santiago,and Marqui Niño Allan
Lopez in the First Philippine Science Cen-
trum Science Exhibit from the Youth Pro-
ject, and awards won by Dominic Bautista,
Joseph Tamayo, and Ann Elizabeth Rollon’s
team (Team B, First Place) and Ruth Joy
Magno, Senando Angelo Santiago, and
Marion Ivy Coronel’s team (Team A, Sec-
ond Place) in the UP Pre-Medical Honor
Society Caduceus Cup 2008.
The department brings its concerted
efforts to succeed in its endeavors of mak-
ing science learning as fun and meaningful
as possible for the students. Indeed, a
celebration of Science!
