I trust you have had restful break, spending time with family and loved ones during the Easter period. What an amazing way to end Term 1, with our Easter Hat Parade. The event just keeps getting more impressive every year with student participation and fun always being our main priority. Even more impressive were the Easter dioramas that were on display in the Library. The amount of creativity and imagination that went into many displays was astounding. I would like to congratulate Mrs Ptolemy for all her efforts, making the day a wonderful way to finish off what was a very busy term. As you may be aware, Mr Wynn has travelled to the Carr Memorial Adventist School in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. I wish Mr Wynn a pleasant stay as he catches up with Mr Jamurang. We look forward to Mr Wynn’s return Monday next week. Take plenty of photos Mr Wynn! This term will bring a lot of change and innovation. You may have already noticed changes to our school’s appearance. The B-Block toilets’ roofing and a variety of timber beams leading up to the back playground have been replaced. The whole walkway has also been re-painted. You may have heard that new fans have been installed in the hall. Designed and manufactured by Airius, the fans will certainly give us relief when the warmer weather approaches. On the other side of the school, we have been busy upgrading our Area 4 playground. When finished, we will have synthetic grass with three tiered sections. Timber garden beds will be installed, and new outdoor furniture will be purchased. Thanks to the proposal put forward by Miss Vella, our SRC coordinator, and the 2018 SRC, we have installed metal fencing under the demountable classrooms. The SRC were concerned about the number of balls and other sporting equipment being lost under the buildings. As the year progresses keep a look out for more exciting projects to come. I would like to take the time to remind parents that morning supervision does not start until 8:40am and there are no staff available to supervise your child in the playground prior to this time. We understand that many parents may have commitments at work which require them to start early. As an alternative, you may be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your children before school. Some families in our school who have working parents take turns to take each other's children to school. Whatever arrangements are made, it’s important that parents understand that you remain responsible for your child prior to 8:40am when the school’s supervision begins. This year was the compulsory implemented of the new Science Syllabus. With largely a focus on STEM which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, technology is changing the way students learn, connect and interact in everyday life. Skills developed by students through STEM provide them with the basis to succeed in a forever changing world. Currently, 75% of jobs require skills that can be developed through STEM! Last term, we received a donation of $4000 from our P & C towards STEM related resources. We were able to purchase several robotic Sphero kits. Using the Sphero, students will learn to code and write their own JavaScript text programs. Thanks again to our amazing P & C for your generous donation. Yesterday morning, all our staff attended a workshop with educational researcher Simon Breakspear. The workshop explored common misconceptions about student learning and what motivates students to learn, persist and thrive in the educational environment. In the afternoon, Mr Wood worked alongside our staff, exploring how to successfully use the newly purchased Sphero kits as an effective learning tool. Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to our wonderful school community for your on-going support during term 1 and of course to our amazing teachers who continue to care and guide our students within the classrooms. Have a great week! Daniel Attard Relieving Principal 1

This week we introduce Mrs NoelleStoeckl

Hi, my name is Noelle Stoeckl.

I have been part of Cambridge GardensPublic School staff for seven years. My roleat our school over this time has been as aclassroom teacher. I have taught studentsfrom Kindergarten to Year Four at ourschool. I am currently teaching classSerenity which is a two/three class. Thepersonal value of Serenity means “ the state

or quality of being serene, calm or tranquil”. I feel that being ableto find inner peace or serenity in today’s world is an extremelyimportant skill, which I hope that all students in Serenity will beable to explore throughout the year and enjoy.

I have been teaching for over twenty years and have workedin a variety of roles, settings, and schools. I have even taughtin London! which was before I had children. Working in the UKwas full of many exciting and amazing experiences. I recall hownervous I was when the two Year Two classes I worked withwent on an excursion to city zoo. There was no chartered bus,we all caught the tube! Sixty kids on the London underground.A little scary but all went well.

I currently live in the Lower Blue Mountains with my husbandand two children. My eldest daughter is in year eight and myyoungest is in year six. I am still surprised at how quickly theyare growing up. It seems like it was last year that they werestarting school. I was born in New Zealand and moved to theEastern Suburbs when I was nine. However, I have lived all overthe place since moving to Sydney. I went to primary schoolin Bondi, where else does a Kiwi go to school! I went to highschool over Randwick way and when I was at Uni I lived inSutherland Shire. My affinity with moving is still with me as Ihave never stayed in the same classroom at CGPS.

I enjoy organizing and coordinating the Cross Country Carnivaland the Premiers Spelling Bee at Cambridge Gardens. I am veryexcited about the Quality Teaching University Research ProjectI am involved in this year. I look forward to having anotherfantastic year at our innovative, vibrant school.

Opportunity Classes for Year 5, 2020We would like to advise parents that students heading in toYear 5 in 2020 have the option to apply for an opportunity classfrom Tuesday 30th April, 2019.

Opportunity classes located in 75 NSW government primaryschools cater for Year 5 and Year 6 academically gifted andtalented students. These classes help gifted and talentedstudents to learn by grouping them with other gifted andtalented students and using specialised teaching methods andeducational materials at the appropriate level.

Parents normally apply when students are in Year 4. Studentswho are placed then attend the opportunity class full time inYears 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leavetheir current school to attend the school with an opportunityclass.

Parents must apply online from the department’s website atthe link below and should read the instructions carefully.Applications are available between 30 April and 17 May 2019.If you have no internet access at home you may need to go toa public library, or you can pop in to our office and we can giveyou some assistance.

https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

You can apply for up to two primary schools with opportunityclasses. Think about your choices carefully. List only theschools you would like your child to attend and in your preferredorder. Offers are made on the basis of your order of choice.

All students are ranked and placed in order of academic merit.Academic merit is determined mainly by combining the resultsof primary school assessments in English and mathematicswith the results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Thiscombination is expressed as a calculated placement score outof 300. The Opportunity Class Placement Test for Year 5 entryin 2020 will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019 in test centres, usually at government high schools. On Wednesday 17 July2019 you will be sent a Test authority email or letter that tellsyou where to take your child to sit the test. Every effort will bemade to send you this information but it is your responsibility toensure that you have received it.

There are two parts to the test, each comprising 35multiple-choice questions in English, mathematics and generalability (thinking skills). Students have 30 minutes to answereach part of the test. Sample tests are published on thedepartment’s website to help your child practise answering thequestions on the sample answer sheet. Find the sample testsat:
