Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity

I often feel blessed that we at St. Patrick’s are a part of a wider community of like-minded schools – Edmund Rice schools. In Queensland, other Edmund Rice schools include St. Joseph’s Nudgee College, St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace, St. James’, St Laurence’s, St Edmund’s Ipswich, St Brendan’s Yeppoon, Ignatius Park Townsville and several Flexible Learning Centres around the state. We are connected to all of these schools, as well as over thirty others nationally in various ways, but I would like to highlight our relationship with just one of these schools in this article. On Monday of this week, I was given the privilege of speaking to the teaching staff of St. Edmund’s College, Ipswich, about two of our programs here at St. Patrick’s – our Justice and Peace Education Program, led by Ms Selena Fisk, and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Program, led by Mr Luke Royes. It was an honour to be invited, as it is a compliment to the work being done by many members of our community in those two very important areas of St. Patrick’s. That said, it is not only St. Edmund’s who can listen to ideas from St. Patrick’s, but vice versa also. St. Edmund’s College has a great deal to teach us as well. They have been at the forefront of global immersion programs for many years, and their program of building a very strong sense of community and belonging for their Polynesian student population is quite incredible, and has aspects that I would love to see St. Patrick’s emulate in the future.

A wonderful aspect of our partnership with St Edmund’s is our immersion partnerships in both Timor Leste and India. While we oversee the planning and preparation for the India Immersion, St. Edmund’s oversees the Timor program, an unbelievable experience for our participating students and staff. St. Edmund’s and St. Patrick’s have much in common, but also have their own distinct identities, and this is one of the greatest benefits of belonging to an organisation like Edmund Rice Education Australia. We can listen and learn from each other, ensuring that each of our schools offers the best possible educational outcomes for our students. On another note, this term is a particularly busy one in the Identity area, with our first big event being this week’s Year 10 Retreats, followed by the annual Grandparents Mass next Friday 25 July. If you are planning on coming along to that Mass, can you please return the completed RSVP slip this week. I wish everyone a great

Term 3.

Dear Parents & Students, The 40 Hour Famine takes place from the 15th-17th of August and we encourage all students and their families to take part. You do not have to give up food, you can choose to give up things like technology, mobile phones etc. The idea is to sacrifice something we have, or even take for granted, and live without it for 40 hours. Gain yourself sponsorship and have some fun. Families may decide to live without TV and technology for that weekend or even as a family challenge themselves to living without food. Please register at the website: http://www.40hourfamine.com.au/ When you register make sure you join the team St. Patrick’s College Shorncliffe. If you are having trouble finding our school make sure you have put the apostrophe in St Patrick’s. To do this register with a group (School/Church/Other) after you have entered your other details. Be aware to register you need to provide a mobile number. Family 40 Hour Famine Stories: If you decide to do the famine as a family we would love to hear your stories and see photos. For example you could email us the story and photos of your family giving up furniture for 40 hours. If you enter as a family please email us a photo and a brief description of what your family is giving up and difficulties you may have faced. Send all famine stories with photos to: [email protected]

Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Community, This week we welcomed back our young men from what I hope was a restful break. Although busy from the outset the young men have begun well and seem to be focussed on their lessons. Next week we will hold the second of two Parent/Teacher interview days for 2014. These days offer an excellent opportunity to reinforce the important partnership between yourselves and the College, with the aim of enabling the best possible outcomes for the young men of St Patrick’s. Teachers will be able to give more detailed feedback on progress as well as directions for improvement. I would encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to speak directly to your son’s teachers. Booking may be made through the Parent Teacher Online (PTO) site. Instructions were emailed during the holidays, however, if you are having difficulty booking interviews please feel free to contact the College for advice. Access to PTO will closed at 5:30pm on Monday, July 21. I would recommend printing a copy of your interview times before this time as, once closed, this will no longer be possible.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

During July and August, all Year 10 students and their parents will become involved in the very important process of subject selection for Year 11, 2015. This process will include a number of information sharing opportunities, meetings and initiatives and are outlined in more detail below.

YEAR 10 STUDENT MEETING On Monday 21 July, all Year 10 students will meet for 2 lessons for the initial subject information meeting. There is no need for parents to attend this meeting. All students will be given a “sample bag” containing various documents which will help to inform your son in making subject selection choices for Year 11. Information will be provided regarding OP and non-OP pathways as well as tertiary admission. I will demonstrate how to complete the SET Plan to students at this meeting and again to parents at the Subject Selection Evening on Thursday 24 July. Mr Ray Celegato, Acting College Dean - Staff and Administration, will demonstrate the online subject selection process to the students at this meeting and again to parents at the Subject Selection Evening. Students will be able to access the program between 21 July – 1 August.

SENIOR EDUCATION TRAINING (SET) PLAN It is a compulsory requirement in all Queensland schools that all Year 10 students undertaking Years 11 and 12 must complete a Senior Education and Training Plan, or what is commonly referred to as a SET Plan. Students must complete the SET Plan booklet, provided by the College (in their sample bag), where they record information about:

Results in Year 10.

Interests and hobbies.

Ideas they might have regarding work or study after school.

Possible courses of study which they may consider enrolling in after Year 12. (Please note this information must be taken from the QTAC booklets which will be included in the sample bags.)

Subjects the student would like to complete in Year 11 and 12.

PARENT AND STUDENT INFORMATION EVENING On Thursday 24 July the College will be having a Subject Selection Information Evening to be held in the Callan Centre for parents and students. The evening will commence at 6.30pm with the following sessions: - Overview of the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). - The subject selection process. - Demonstration on how to complete the SET Plan. - Demonstration on how the online subject selection process operates. Heads of Curriculum and the College Guidance Officer will be available during the evening to answer any questions you may have. It would also be useful if you bring the QTAC Guide, SET Plan Booklet and the Subject Selection Guide that will be distributed to your son on the Monday before.

SUBJECT SELECTION INTERVIEW DAY Friday 1 August we will conduct our Subject Selection Interview Day. It is a compulsory requirement that every Year 10 student in Queensland who intends entering Year 11 must meet with a mentor to finalise their SET Plan. Consequently, all classes for Year 10 will be suspended on 1 August to enable this process. Parents and boys will be notified of an appointment time with their mentor, where subject selection and SET planning will approved and finalised. Please note that boys will only need to attend school for their allocated appointment. Students must wear their uniform to the interview. I look forward to speaking to parents at the Subject Selection Evening on Thursday, 24 July.

ACKNOWLEDGING VIRTUOUS BEHAVIOUR As parents and educators we are forever promoting to our young men the best ways of working, socialising, coping, contributing and striving for improvement. At times we may become frustrated that our messages are not “sinking in”. To address this, Dr. Ian Lillico has offered our parent and teaching community plenty of tips in the past. I have found his advice on the power of praise very effective. Praise can be a powerful mechanism that greatly increases the chances that our messages translate into noticeable changes in behaviour of our young men. For praise to be effective, it needs to be descriptive. Praise needs to describe what was seen and felt by those involved. For example a parent could say to their son, “I’ve noticed that Mr. Schultz gave you some very positive feedback on your Math’s assignment. I’m proud of your efforts. You spent a lot of time at home solving those difficult problems – that’s what I call determination!” Summing up in a word is the end goal of any verbal praise

(Lillico, 2012). This one word can be aligned with one of the 52 virtues (below):

We are currently challenging our young men to being Men of Faith, Men o f Learning and Men of Humility. In doing so they are formed into Men of A c tion. To praise and recognise our students who model such behaviour, next week we will be commencing Men of A c tion A wards. College staff will make nominations for these awards that will be presented to students at each College Assembly. I look forward to observing how our student body responds to our praise initiative. See how your son responds at home to Dr. Lillico’s model of praise.

UPCOMING STUDENT FORMATION EVENTS Saturday 19 July: Year 8 to 10 dance. 7:00pm – 10:00pm Sandgate PCYC Monday 21 July: Year 12 Student Afternoon Year 12 Parent and Student Evening 7:00pm – 8:15pm College Callan Centre Tuesday 29 July: Years 7 to 10 Parent Seminar and Student Workshop on Study Skills. 7:00pm – 8:00pm College Waterford Building. REMINDERS Uniform Our winter uniform continues this term. Your son needs to be wearing a College tie. Students in Year 10 to 12 need to be wearing trousers and blazer. Hair and Grooming Please ensure that your son’s hair meets our expectations in relation to our Hair and Grooming Policy. We are striving to ensure that we are consistent with applying our policies when following up with students. Your support with this is a greatly appreciated.

Instrumental tuition – Timetables are listed on CONNECT Ensembles Rehearsals – See CONNECT for details For further information refer to the INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PAGE click here Term 3 is going to be BIG! With preparation for several events including: Jazzin’ Up the Mall – Queen St (July), Einbunpin (July), Grandparents Mass (July), Assumption Mass (Aug), Qld. Catholic Music Festival (Aug) as well as Open Day, Battle of the Bands, Showcase and Celebration of Excellence coming up in October and November, we have our work cut out! It’s going to be busy but fun as always! It’s not too late to get involved either, whether a student or a staff member, please let me know your interests and we’ll find a role for you! In preparation for these events, the Co-Curricular Music area held a two-day Music Intensive Day Camp here at the College. There was Instrumental Music in many forms, singing, comedy and many games of soccer seeing students from Years 5 through 12 and staff participate. Below are some reflections from our students. Jesse Keasley (Year 9) Holidays: the one word for disaster. Over the holidays, kids go skateboarding and injure themselves or they go play sports and hurt themselves. Bob Marley once said: “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain” While kids were enjoying their holidays outside, one particular group of

SPC students were enjoying their time inside playing music. A “Musical Intensive: Day Camp” was conducted over the two days of the 10th and 11th of July as preparation for our big events and ventures in Term 3. These include preparations for Showcase, Celebration of Excellence as well as performing in the community at events such as Einbunpin (July), Catholic Colleges Music Festival (August), Jazzin' Up the Mall - QSM (July). With the ‘Rocky’ project played earlier in the term by some professional musicians, students got the invigorating feel of playing ‘Gonna Fly Now’ for themselves. But, while we enjoyed playing the music, we also enjoyed smashing it out on the soccer field. The day camp was accompanied by a couple of co-curricular and classroom teachers. These included: Locky Hawkins (Percussion), Dom Chan (Piano), Andre Reginato (Guitar), Miss Simmers, Mr Samuels, Mr Will, Mr Hockey, ‘old boy’ Josh Cathcart and last but not least.... our Music Coordinator, Mr Fischer. This all wrapped with a dazzling performance at the end of the two days with everyone participating in the performance of the Rocky theme song known as ‘Gonna Fly Now’. Overall this was a change in tone for the students from a holiday full of wrecking havoc to enjoying the last couple of days of the holidays playing music and having a fun time.

Jared Littin (Year 8) The Music Camp For 2014 started with a morning game of soccer (which I can honestly say was probably the camp’s game). Everyone was then called into the Callan Centre. Mr Fisher talked about what we were doing in the camp and then introduced all the teachers and tutors. All of the students then got sent off to start practising the Rocky theme and other cool pieces of music that their teacher/tutor had assigned them on their instrument that they were playing. Near the end of day 1 of the music camp, everyone got together and practised the Rocky theme. Everything was starting to sound awesome. On the day of the concert the two MC’s introduced all the teachers in a very humorous way. We had the strings led by Miss Simmers and they played Don’t Stop Believing by the American Rock Band “Journey”. We then had the guitar ensemble led by Mr Reginato. They played a song that their best guitar player, Jett Bradley, had written that very morning. The piece then continued on to be the Transformers theme. After that, the Junior Band led by Mr Hockey played Louie Louie. I could go on forever about the great performances but the highlight of the afternoon was when every one got together and played the Rocky theme which concluded the music camp. It was a great experience for me.

Below is a brief overview with links to the Cultural web pages containing more detailed information on each of the activities.

ART CLUB Coordinator - Katie Moro [email protected] 2014 proved to be another busy and successful year for Art Club. There were so many students wanting to be involved that we ended up with a long waiting list to get in! The purpose of Art Club is to give students an opportunity to learn new art making skills, experiment with media, and to develop confidence in taking risks and making mistakes as they learn. Students are encouraged to develop their own unique style in a non-competitive, supportive and friendly environment. Students form genuine friendships across different ages groups, united in their need to be creative. Junior Art Club (Years 5 to 7) produced a number of imaginative projects including Babushka Dolls, clay sculpture, mixed media collage, painting and drawing using pencils, pastels and markers. through their paces by special guest and Brisbane Bronco’s

Head of Performance, Alex Corvo. All students enjoyed the

challenge of training with Alex and the SPC Basketball

program would like to extend its sincere thanks to Alex for

giving up some time out of his busy schedule.

Holiday training culminated in a condensed tournament hosted by St James College. After a tough loss against St James College No. 1 the boys pulled together for victories over St James No. 2, St Laurence’s and Brisbane State High School. The standard of basketball on display was of a very high standard and all students represented the College with pride. The CIC season begins this week with training on

Wednesday and Friday after school with the first game on

Friday 25th July. The AIC season commences on Tuesday

22nd July with training at Boondall Entertainment Center.
