Mr David Gardiner College Dean

All the very best to everyone for a wonderful winter break. It certainly has been a very busy semester with a significant amount of outstanding work completed and so many fantastic events held. I hope everyone has a very restful and safe holiday. Thank you to everyone for all your efforts during Semester 1. Reports will be completed by staff next week and then sent home. The very important Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday July 18th. It is important that everyone has their Parent Connect Password and Username as they will be required to log into the PTO site when it opens on July 1st. CONNECT TIP OF THE WEEK. The College suggests that parents use their logon to share their contact details through Parent Lounge on the College Website. In previous years these contact details were shared through the printed version of the College Business Directory. Go to the College Website www.stpatricks.qld.edu.au. Find SPC Connect in the white section above the College Banner, SPC Connect: STUDENTS|PARENTS|STAFF and

click on Parents. Enter Username & Password Go to Parent Lounge on the left hand side of the page Choose the Parent Directory TAB. A picture of your son will appear with his Name, Year Level and Tutor Group. Go to the Maintain Tab and select the details you would like to share. The College suggests only the parent’s

names and phone contact details: Click on Save Changes. Your details will then be visible to other parents of the College Community. Most parents allowed display of their contact details when the Business Directory was in a hard copy format and the College would like you to take the time over the holidays to update yours on Connect. A series of interviews have been conducted over the last few weeks to select the students for our Leadership Formation Opportunities. In addition to our Canada and USA Exchange Program, and the India and East Timor Immersions, the College has added a new Immersion experience to Tiwi Islands. I wish to announce and congratulate the following students who have been selected to represent the College in the various opportunities:-

India Johan Baines Joseph Champness Gerard Denkes Johannes Hoehensteiger Ryan Hollyman Sam Huth Harry Rehm Lachlan Righetti

Tiwi Islands Aaron Caruana Louis Emery Callum Molloy Lachlan Munro Josh O’Loughlin Chris Reitano Tom Trembath

Another term has seemingly flown by at St Patrick’s – a term which, in the Identity and Ministry area, included the ANZAC Liturgy, Kairos 3 and 4, Detention for Detention, the Edmund Rice Mass, the Live Below the Line Challenge, Year 9 Emmaus Retreats, the Lantern Parade to welcome refugees, the Blanket Drive, as well as our regular Paddies Van ministries and soup kitchen each week. Our busy term will conclude tomorrow in our liturgy. The focus of the liturgy will be the question: “Can One Person Make a Difference?” and throughout the liturgy, we will hear stories of various individuals who are indeed making a differ-ence within and beyond our school community. We will hear from a Big Brother/Little Brother combination from Treacy House; a Yr 9 lad who has been helping care for the pet of one of our Paddies Van regulars; we will hear about some amazing things happening in our Justice and Peace in the curriculum area; we will hear of the wonderful impact our remote Aboriginal boys are having on our community. We will even witness Makoi Makuel and Christian Rizzalli tackling a Ben Harper tune live – something not to miss!

The liturgy will open with a short reflection, which I thought may be worth sharing here. I think it sets the scene for how we may answer our key question… One day, a businessman on holiday was walking along a beach when he saw a young boy. Along the shore were many starfish that had been washed up by the tide and were sure to die before the tide returned. The boy was walking slowly along the shore and occasionally reached down to throw the beached starfishes back into the ocean. The man hoping to teach the boy some common sense asked him “Why are you doing this? I can see you have a good heart but there’s no way you could throw every starfish back into the sea. There are too many beaches! Too many starfish! Surely you can find something better to do. Do you really think that what you are doing will make a difference?” The boy looked up at the man and then at the starfish by his feet. He picked up the starfish and as he gently threw it back into the ocean, he said: “It makes a difference to that one”. The liturgy will commence at 12.45pm in the Callan Centre and all are welcome. I wish the entire St Patrick’s College community a restful, safe and well-deserved break.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of the St Patrick’s community all the best for the upcoming winter break and hope that it is both restful and energizing. Congratulations to all the boys for a great semester. It certainly has been a very full but positive semester. Enjoy the break – it is well deserved. Over the winter break you will receive your son’s Semester 1 Report. Please take time to discuss your son’s report with him and help him set clear goals for the second semester. It is important to acknowledge the good work your son is doing but also take note of the teacher’s comments about areas to work on. Overall the results across the College were quite good but each individual student must take steps to continue to improve. Students who are performing well in their classes generally are also showing positive behaviour. Please also maintain strong communication with the staff, either by writing notes in the Student Diary, email or via the phone. I would like to raise some important information regarding Hair/Grooming and Uniform before the commencement of Term 3. HAIR - It is important that all Students and Parents review “The Hair and Grooming Policy” that is located on page 26 and 27 of the Student Diary. The underlying principle “St Patrick’s College requires students in order to maintain a high standard of dress and grooming so as to present an appropriate image of the College to the broader community and to each other, it is an expectation that hair be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times”. I ask that all boys make the necessary arrangements to have their haircut to meet the College guidelines before the start of Term 3. Students will be sent home on the first day of Term 3 if they do not meet these College Guidelines.

TERM 3 UNIFORM – Term 3 commences on Monday, 8 July, for all students. All students are to wear the school winter during Term 3. Please ensure your son has his full uniform for the first day of Term 3. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 must wear the College Blazer to and from school each day, as well as during the day if they wish. It is a requirement that all boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 wear long trousers every day. All Students in Years 5 to 12 must use a College Bag to and from school every day. Tour fleeces are not to be worn at school.

SENIOR FORMAL AND YEAR 11 DINNER DANCE: Year 11 Dinner Dance and the Year 12 Formal paymentS are due on Friday 14 June. LAST DAY TERM 2 - All students in will be dismissed from the College on the 14 June at 1.30pm. Buses have been organised to depart the College at 1.30pm. All students must remain at school until this time. THE YEAR 8-9-10 SOCIAL will be held on Saturday 13 July. Normal school rules and expectations apply. We need parents to assist with the running of the Social – on the front door, in the cloakroom, selling drinks, general supervision. We cannot run the social without parental support. If you can help please contact Mrs Fowlie in the Student Office (36319070) Venue – Sandgate PCYC, Kempster Street, Deagon Time- 7.00 to 10.00 pm Clothing – closed footwear is essential, no offensive T-Shirts. Cost - $10 Attendance – only St Patrick’s Year 8-9-10 boys plus female students from invited Colleges – St Rita’s, St John Fisher, Mt Alvernia, All Hallows, Clayfield College, St Margaret’s, Mt St Michael’s and Mary Mackillop College.

LOST PROPERTY—There is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office from lunch boxes to uniforms and particularly shoes (black leather and sporting). At the end of this term we will be doing our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul of any lost property which has not been claimed before then. Please come in and check it out.

Mr Geoff Samuels Director of Culture

The freak storm super cell that flew across Brisbane last night wasn’t the only bit of mid-week excitement. Our Year 8 debaters engaged in their first short preparation debate, and the young debating novices did not disappoint. It’s a daunting prospect – you’ve only been debating for a couple of weeks and then you are launched into a debate where you are only given the topic just an hour before you need to present. The boys are locked in a room, without the use of Google and/or their coach. Last night our Year 8’s, made up of speakers Max Marson, Ethan Green and Joe Grew, were most impressive in their first short preparation outing. The boys have learnt much over the season and have become very accomplished speakers. They all managed to formulate some intelligent argument as to why teachers should use more technology in the classroom (perhaps drawing on their own personal experience here at 1-2-1 laptop central). The boys were most unlucky not come away with a win, but their exciting form bodes well for season 2014.

Last night’s debate wraps up the action-packed preliminary season, which means the anticipation of the finals awaits us in Term 3. Yet again, St Patrick’s will be well represented with the following teams expecting a call up: Year 9 (Team Seers) Year 10 (Team Newman) Year 11 (both Teams – Powerhouse year level) Firsts Stay tuned early next term for details of debate times and topics. Many of our teams are rolling into the finals on the back of undefeated seasons, and Ms Hewitt has indicated that ‘she’s in it to win it’ this year. Expect amazing things from SPC Debating next term.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC & SINGING LESSONS Any boys wishing to learn a musical instrument or how to sing next term, come over to Rodgers Centre and see Mr Fischer for a chat and grab a form. Otherwise, you can pick up a form from the student office. All forms need to be in on FRIDAY by the end of school.

CANTEEN UPDATES The canteen at Curlew Park takes lots of organisation and dedication to ensure it runs smoothly on days like Back to Shorncliffe Day, without people like David Row, Neil Gordon, Eamonn Riordan, Kerry Johannessen, Jo Humble and Terry McMahon just to name a few of the great people that put the effort in week after week, we would not be able to provide such a great facility and run it in such a professional manner, so to those people and all the other dedicated sport support team thanks for all your efforts each week. Just looking around on Saturday the canteen and BBQ were four and five deep all day, this was the biggest day ever at Curlew Park. All those parents and supporters that assisted in the canteen on Back to Shorncliffe Day again thank you for your assistance because without you it certainly would not happen. EVERYONE IS TO BE CONGRATULATED WELL DONE Now Rugby / Football are complete the next one is basketball so again if you can help in any way please feel free to drop in and lend a hand.

COORDINATORS WANTED Functions coordinator Sport support is looking for a person or persons that would be interested in organising a number of functions/events throughout the year, if you would like to get involved please email [email protected] to discuss further.

PADDIES BATTALION A special mention must go to the Paddies Battalion, the group of dedicated St Patrick’s students that turn up each week to support the teams; we have seen them at the Cricket, Volleyball, Debating, Soccer, and Chess so far this year. I just wonder where they will pop up next. Well done Boys

Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

Well, what a fantastic day at Curlew Park on Saturday for our last round of CIC/AIC Rugby and Football. It was great to see so much support from our students, their family and friends and all others associated with the College. The turn out to watch our students in rugby and football was one of the biggest we have experienced in many years. We must commend all our students for their behaviour, dress standard and their enthusiastic spirit shown throughout the en-tire day. They, their parents and the College community should be very proud as it was a true testament of what St Patrick’s College Sport is about. It would be remiss not to make a special mention of our College’s First XI Football team who completed their AIC season of 2013 with a great win over St Laurence’s College (SPC 7 d SLC 1) and in doing so securing our Colleges first ever football prem-iership at a First XI level. This achievement is a credit to all the players within the First XI football squad, their coaches and also a reflection of the direction in which the football program has been guided over the years by Mr Josh McCloughan (SPC Football Coordinator). To all involved in CIC and AIC Rugby and Football – the players, the coaches, the parents and the supporters, we would like to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and dedication to both rugby and football throughout the duration of Term 2 this year. A special thank you to the coordinators, Mr Heath Mackintosh (SPC Rugby) and Mr Ryan Schultz (SPC Football Administration) / Josh McCloughan (SPC Football Coaching) for all their dedication and efforts in making both rugby and football at St Patrick’s a success in 2013. We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of both our Curlew Park Grounds Staff, led by Mr Murray Schultz and Mr Geoff Paulsen, for providing us with a fantastic venue week in and week out and our Sports Support Group Committee, led by Mr Ian Johannessen and Mr David Row, for all their hard work in the Curlew Canteen. Without the support of all these people, Saturdays at Curlew Park would not be of the high standard as it is.
