The Pope Francis Effect: “I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty

because it has been out on the streets.”

Evangelii Gaudium 49, Pope Francis

As Easter approaches, these words from Pope Francis seem very appropriate and timely. Easter is of course the most important season in our Catholic faith – it is at the core of Catholic belief and life. For many Catholics, especially young people, it is also the season which raises the most questions for us. The story of Jesus’ death is on the one hand a very human story of Jesus, and on the other, a very divine story of Jesus. Jesus suffered. He suffered terribly. He was in immense pain on the cross. As humans, we can in many ways relate to Jesus’ pain, not because each of us has been literally nailed to a cross, but because we know what physical pain feels like, and we can imagine that Jesus felt awful physical pain. We also know pain on other levels – we suffer due to loss, fear, loneliness, rejection, and being treated not as well as we would like. Jesus also felt these emotions, just like us. The struggle for many of us comes with what happened next – Jesus rose from the dead. This story of hope coming out of suffering is central to our Catholic faith. I really like Pope Francis. In my mind, he is a game-changer in the way the Catholic Church not only is perceived, but in the work it inspires us to do. This impact that our new Pope has made is being referred to as “the Pope Francis Effect”. What I most like about Pope Francis is the way he has made us focus very much on the humanity of the Church. In his recent Apostolic Exhortataion Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis tells us that the Church needs to be more missionary in its outreach to people, rather than being focused on ideology, careerism, buildings and bureaucracy: “Let us go forth, then, let us go forth to offer everyone the life of Jesus Christ. Here I repeat for the entire Church what I have often said to the priests and laity of Buenos Aires – I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the

streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.”

I would like to sincerely wish everyone a happy, holy, restful Easter holiday. May we all take this opportunity to celebrate our common humanity – in our suffering and in our brokenness, but also in the hope this season represents for us.

Mr Frank Torrisi

College Dean Student Formation

It has been a very positive first term. The level of cooperation and involvement by the students has been excellent, and all functions and events have been enthusiastically supported. This year in the Inter– House Competitions all boys have been enthusiastic with over 250 boys involved in Inter-House chess, every student participated in the swimming carnivals, 200 runners in the Great Morven Race, and a large number of boys received academic medals and points for their House. Finally the commitment to Shore to Gate by the young men has certainly been inspiring with the amount of money they have collected. I certainly hope the Term 1 reports reflect the effort and positive tone around the College. I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of the St. Patrick’s community all the best for the upcoming Easter break and hope that it is both restful and energizing. I would like to raise some important information regarding hair/grooming and uniform before the commencement of Term 2. Well done to all, and I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. TERM 2 UNIFORM Term 2 commences on Tuesday, 22 April, for all students. All students are to wear the College tie during Term 2. Please ensure your son has his tie for the first day of Term 2. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 must wear long trousers and the College blazer to and from school each day.

HAIR The Hair and Grooming Policy is located on page 26 and 27 of the Student Diary with the underlying principle St. Patrick’s College requires students to maintain a high standard of dress and grooming so as to present an appropriate image of the College to the broader community and to each other. It is an expectation that hair be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times. I ask that all boys make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of Term 2. Those boys who do not meet the College requirements will face a range of consequences which may include being sent home to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines. LOST PROPERTY There is an abundance of lost property in the Student Office from lunch boxes to uniforms and particularly shoes (black leather and sporting). It is disappointing that these items are not labeled. It is important that all items are labeled so that it can be returned to its rightful owner. At the end of this term we will be doing our usual donation to St Vincent de Paul and the Uniform Shop for any lost property which has not been claimed before then. Please come in and check it out.

I could explain my India Immersion experience by describing all of the places we visited and activities we did. However, I think a more effective way of expressing the impact India has had on me is through this simple story …. India is a country full of culture. Everywhere you look you will find three things; singing and dancing and colour. Unfortunately this vibrant and lively culture has a darker side which has left many people marginalised beyond imagination and it is hard to believe that such an energetic society could produce a group like the Untouchables. The Untouchables are the lowest members of the Caste System, a system similar to that of the class system, where every person is born into a caste and remains there for the entirety of their life. This is where my story with the Untouchables in Rajgangpur begins, with the hard work of the coolest Nun I have ever had the pleasure to meet; Sister Magdalene Peter. I was extremely fortunate to have witnessed the seemingly endless excitement of the Untouchable children at a picnic on an apparently ordinary Saturday. I must admit that before I met the children, I had many predispositions about what their behaviour or lives might be like so I was extremely happy to see that though these children go through so many hardships in their everyday lives, they were still smiling and they were still happy to play games with us. I was told that the picnic was most likely going to

be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of them which is when I realised the magnitude of their situation. Though it was true that these children were enjoying life on that day, it was only one day in an entire year, and that year was only one of an entire lifetime of years. In Australia, we could have been with any Kindergarten, playing games, having fun and then we’d return home to our homes and live happily knowing that we will have so many more days of happiness coming. But tragically, the reality was that these children will not go back to a wonderful home, with the knowledge that there will be many more of these happy days to come, the reality for them is that they live in a society that treats them as unequals and will continue to do so unless something changes. Which is why the work of Sister Peter and all the other Handmaids of Mary is so important, because they are there to help the marginalised live better lives. Sister Peter always teaches the untouchables that no society will treat them equally if they cannot treat themselves with dignity and respect. She set her life to building the self-worth of the Untouchables and was truly inspiring to me as well as all the other boys who went to India. Lastly I would like to share a phrase that Sister Peter uses often; “Good, better, best, never stop or rest, until your good is better and your better best.” Johannes Hoehenstieger

Mr Tim Walker Rice House

CLOSE THE GAP Thursday 20 of March marked the annual Close the Gap day. Along with fellow Rice House Leader Gerard Denkes and Rice House teachers we took action. We did this by setting up a variety of activities for Rice House men to complete during the House Assembly on the day. The purpose of these activities were to educate the young men of Rice House about Close the Gap day and what it stands for. After a brief presentation from Mr Walker, the House was broken up into three separate groups, each aimed at participating in an age-appropriate activity. The first group consisting of Year 5 and 6 students partook in making an Aboriginal flag poster with their hands. This was done by tracing their hand with the appropriate colour of the Aboriginal flag, and writing a message of solidarity.

The second group included Years 7, 8 and 9 participated in trying to write their own dreamtime story. These stories gave the contemporary health issue of heart disease a traditional Indigenous ‘spin’.

Finally Years 10, 11 and 12 attempted writing news article headlines that would feature an article based on the Close the Gap issues.

The knowledge learnt on the day was extremely helpful in understanding the health issues that inflict a 10-17 year life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people compared to Australians. The day had a positive attitude with the young men of Rice House getting involved and showed the advocacy potential and power of the group. A way we managed to help out in the grand scheme of things on the day was to sign the pledge on the website below. https://www.oxfam.org.au/explore/indigenous-australia/close-the-gap/s We’d appreciate it if you would sign it too! Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

Last Saturday we had our first trial games of Football and Rugby for 2014 against Villanova College at Villa Park, Tingalpa. It was a very positive day with some great results in both codes. It did highlight the positive direction of both our football and rugby program and the work being done by the coaches and students alike. It was also tremendous to see our students dressed appropriately and displaying so much pride for their College.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS Sean McArdle (Year 12) – recently competed for Metropolitan North Under 19 Cricket at the Queensland U19 Championships. Sean’s Metropolitan North Regional Team won the Queensland Championships & he finished the carnival with bowling figures of 5 wickets for 14 runs, which were the best match figures for the tournament. Bertrum Speirs (Year 6), Benjamin Foster (Year 6) & Ethan Jamieson (Year 6) – all selected into the Bramble Bay District Primary Football Team to compete at the Metropolitan North Primary Regional Football Championships in May. Hayden Connell (Year 12) – selected into the Queensland Under 18 Secondary Schools Baseball Team to compete at the National Championships in Wollongong in May.
