With the cold weather comes the onset of rugby and football season. This week we host St. Edmund’s College and Nudgee Junior College as part of Back to Shorncliffe Day. It is shaping up to be a great day, particularly in light of our historic First XV win over Marist Ashgrove last weekend. As well as some great rugby and football on the day, it is a chance to pamper our mothers. The Parents and Friends will be conducting ‘High Tea’ in the Peter Tyrrell Centre throughout the day as well as having their Mother’s Day stall operating from there. I invite all of our Mothers to come along to Curlew Park and enjoy some nice food and watch the boys play their rugby and football. It is also a day for the Old Boys to return to ‘their alma mater by the sea’. It is shaping up to be a great day so put on your ‘green and gold’ and come down to Curlew Park on Saturday. With Mother’s Day this Sunday the Parents and Friends will again be conducting their Mother’s Day stall on Thursday and Friday. All gifts are moderately priced and it is a great way for the boys to purchase that special gift for mum or grandma. Our Edmund Rice Mass last Friday was an excellent exhibition of what it is to be part of the Edmund Rice community. As usual Fr Liam led our Mass but this year he was very capably assisted by a large number of Year 5 students. They shared their learnings from Term 1, where they examined aspects of Edmund Rice, his life, the Christian Brothers and Edmund Rice Education Australia. I was extraordinarily proud of these young men and congratulate them, their teachers and their parents on what they have done. At St. Patrick’s College we are very fortunate to have Br Chris and Br Col as part of our community. I said on Friday and will repeat it here, how thankful we are to have such dedicated men in our College Community. I, on behalf of all within the St. Patrick’s College Community, thank them for their vocation as a Christian Brother. Next week the students in Years 5, 7, and 9 will participate in the NAPLAN Tests. This is a challenging time for our students. Their teachers have been working with the students in preparing for these tests and I am confident that they will do of their best. We can support the students by ensuring that they have the correct equipment for the tests and have early nights during the week. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the NAPLAN tests I suggest you contact your son’s teacher or alternatively Mr Chris Campbell. Good luck to all the boys. This morning the St. Patrick’s College Foundation hosted its second Business Breakfast with 2003 College Captain, Mr Hayden Neeland, being our guest speaker. With nearly 100 guests it was an excellent morning and provided an opportunity for the Foundation to launch its ‘Build for the Future’ Campaign. My thanks to Stacey Bishop for her efforts in ensuring the success of the morning. For further information regarding the ‘Build for the Future’ campaign please click the link www.stpatricks.qld.edu.au/our-community/ foundation.html Periodically I remind parents about parking, pickup and drop off practices. Alas it is that time again! Can I ask parents to be very careful when driving around the streets near St. Patrick’s College. Please avoid double (sometimes triple) parking, stopping on the zebra crossing, stopping or parking in the Pier Avenue bus stops and parking across local residents’ driveways. Your support with these issues will ultimately protect your son. Thank you for your support. Finally this week, I wish all the Mothers a very happy Mother’s Day and hope that you are spoilt on this special day. See you all at Curlew Park on Saturday. College Dean Student Formation

It was good to see the large number of parents who attended Monday’s Parent/Teacher interviews. It is important that we consolidate a positive start by many students and implement changes with others who may have not reached or realised their potential. I hope the advice that was received on the evening can form the basis for ongoing discussion at home. If there are any issues that need to be discussed please do not hesitate to contact your son’s House Dean. College Laptops: It is a requirement that all laptops are fully charged when students arrive at school. No student will be permitted to charge their laptop at school. All chargers are to remain at home. If students find that their laptops battery is not lasting a full day they should immediately report to the IT Student Support Office for assistance. Inter-House Cross Country: Congratulations to the winning House, Treacy, who were successful on the day, also winning a number of year levels. Overall results 1st Treacy, 2nd O’Rourke, 3rd Mooney, 4th Coffey, 5th Kennedy and Rice, 7th Ryan, 8th Xavier, and 9th Quane. Well done Treacy. Pastoral Information Evening: The College will hold an information evening on Tuesday 20 May. The topic of the evening will be “Dealing with the Digital Teenager”. Ian

Lillico will be the presenter. Please reserve a seat by telephoning Maxine Nott on 36319031

Edmund Rice did a good job. I would hazard a guess, in fact, that he far exceeded his own expectations. Let’s face it – if Edmund Rice, an Irishman born in the small town of Callan who lived and worked in Waterford, could know what he began in the early 1800s, he’d be almightily surprised. If he knew that 250 years after he was born, in a city nearly as far away from Callan as possible, that people would be celebrating his life and doing whatever they could to replicate his work in their own context, you would have to think he’d be reasonably chuffed with that legacy. I’m a fan of Edmund Rice – this will come as no great surprise considering the role I have gravitated towards. This week though, as we celebrated the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice (5 May), I have been reflecting on what it is about this man that has attracted me to his story and his charism. If I am to be honest, it is not just the work of Edmund which inspires me, but the work of the Christian Brothers also – the Congregation which Edmund began, and which continues to do amazing work all around the globe today. Like Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop, Edmund in many ways was a simple person. He saw a need and sought about addressing that need as effectively as he could. Edmund saw poor boys on the streets in his town, and was not satisfied with their bleak future. Edmund was a man of faith and a man of action. Through his close relationship with his God, and his devotion to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Edmund was able to discern a way forward. His wise approach was to

address the needs of the poor boys through challenging the status quo and breaking the cycle of poverty by providing a way out – education. His work inspired others, and other men joined him. These men became the first Christian Brothers. I have been fortunate enough to meet, know, work with and become friends with numerous Christian Brothers. These men have inevitably inspired me to be a better teacher, a better leader and a better man. The Brothers have a simple motto: to do and to teach. Their work and legacy however is far more profound. Through establishing and running numerous very good schools, the Brothers have educated young men who have become people who make extraordinary contributions to their families, their communities and their world. Today, St. Patrick’s College attempts to continue this endeavour. This month, there are a variety of ways in which we are doing so, including “Live Below the Line” week, “What Would You Do?” campaign, and on May 23, our annual ERA (Edmund Rice Advocacy) for Change gathering, this year being held right here at St. Patrick’s. Edmund Rice once famously said: “Have courage, the good seed will grow up in the children’s hearts later on.” Thankfully at St. Patrick’s, there is strong evidence of this growth in our students already.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

On Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 May, all students in Years 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known. Skills that will be tested include: reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are completed here at the College and are considered just another part of the curriculum program. NAPLAN cannot be specifically studied for and students are not expected to do so. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is just a routine part of our College program, and to urge them to do the best they can on the day. Some nervousness is natural. Your support in affirming that it is just like any other school day will help ease these tensions. It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy, and provides comparison of such data against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. These individual student results will be sent to parents later in the year. The reports will enable parents to view and monitor how your child is progressing.

NAPLAN is also used by governments, education authorities and schools to determine whether young Australians are meeting important educational goals in literacy and numeracy. This is valuable data to support good teaching and learning, and school improvement. As your child progresses through their school years it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the skills of reading, writing and mathematics—essential skills that will set them firmly upon the path to success as adults. Our preparation for NAPLAN here at the College involves each of Heads of Curriculum ensuring that a broad and rich curriculum is studied across the year levels. NAPLAN familiarisation is important, but drilling and excessive practice is unnecessary and unhelpful. These tests contain questions similar to those that occur in regular classroom learning and assessment and we are confident that the results will help guide parent and teacher support for literacy and numeracy. If you have any concerns we’d encourage parents to talk to their teacher, who knows your child’s learning best.

Mrs Andrea Sked P & F News

With a very busy Term 1 behind us we are now looking forward to an even busier Term 2. In Term 1 the P & F welcomed new families to the College. We were pleased to see that many new parents that had attended the 2013 orientation evening came to the early 2014 P & F meetings. It was again a welcome sight to see some of these familiar faces at the Principal’s Morning Tea and then the Parent Education Evening “Raising Teenage Boys” by Andy Roy. The Parent Education Evenings are always a great evening and the information taken away is invaluable. In the Easter holidays the P & F again had a turn at manning the Tuesday evening Paddies Van at Roma Street. The term was rounded off by a very full Easter weekend where we (for our second year) ran a St. Patrick’s stall at the Blue Water Festival. As we did in 2013, we again took the opportunity to sell glow products to the children on the Thursday evening and then went on to sell hot cross buns, homemade confectionery and drinks on Good Friday. We had unprecedented amounts of willing volunteers and were again able to present a positive face of St. Patrick’s to the community and were the only school represented at the event. A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers including Mary Brodie and Mandy Crossan who packed the hot cross buns and made the glow product display, Louise Stringer who made all of the confectionery, the members of our community who generously donated ingredients for the confectionery, Rod Chiapello from McDonald’s Bracken Ridge who again donated products for the stall, Jim Mann and the maintenance crew who got all our gear down to Moora Park and to all the other St. Patrick’s community members who volunteered their time and manned the stall over the weekend. Now on to Term 2. What’s on? Again we are in for a busy time. Already we have had a P & F meeting where Dr Carroll showed parents the plans for the new Sporting and Cultural Precinct. We had the first day of our Mother’s Day Stall today and what a great success, with hundreds of boys eager to purchase something special for their mum. Many thanks to Mary Brodie and her helpers who put together and wrapped a very large range of gifts. This Saturday, 10 May, is Back to Shorncliffe Day at Curlew Park and the P&F will be hosting a Coffee and Cake Shop. We will also have a range of Mother’s Day gifts for sale. On Tuesday 20 May we will be hosting the second Parent Education Evening of the year with the topic ‘Dealing with the Digital Teenager’ by Dr Ian Lillico. Our final function for Term 2 is our Jazz and Shiraz afternoon to be held on Sunday 27 of July in the Waterford Building overlooking the beautiful Moreton Bay. Tickets will go on sale later in the Term. Book early to ensure you don’t miss out as this function has been a favourite in the past.

Finally, please support our major fundraiser of the year and purchase an Entertainment Book. These books are great value and funds raised are used by the P & F to assist the St. Patrick’s Community. Don’t forget our next P & F Meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday 21 May commencing at 7.30pm in the Waterford Building.

This competition is aimed at encouraging young people to become confident speakers. They were required to develop a persuasive and engaging speech on a topic of their choosing from a provided list and to speak for 6min in the junior section and 8min in the senior. Jai Abernathy (C2) from Year 9 spoke on the topic “A most valuable legacy”, where he spoke at length on the lasting impact of Winston Churchill on the modern world, his insightful and well prepared speech earned him fourth place in his heat on Saturday morning. Meanwhile Christjan Corias (R6) from Year 12 spoke on the topic “Less is more”, where he talked the concept of consumerism and greed in our modern world, this balanced and forthright speech earned him a credible fourth place. Unfortunately even with these excellent results for our two young men, they were not enough to progress them to the finals to be held in the coming weeks. A big congratulations to this young men on representing the College in an excellent fashion and I encourage not only them but the rest of the boys here at the College to get involved in all of the public speaking opportunities available to them and to regularly check the Public Speaking Connect page for details of upcoming competitions.

Round 2 of our CIC and AIC Football and Rugby is this weekend. It is also our annual Back to Shorncliffe Day so we are looking set for a wonderful day of St. Patrick’s College Football and Rugby. We will be versing Nudgee Junior College, Indooroopilly in CIC (Year 5 to 7) and St Edmund’s College, Ipswich in our AIC (Year 8 to 12) games, all being played at Curlew Park. It is extremely important that all our students understand that, should they be attending Curlew Park on Saturday to support or staying behind after their game (of Football or Rugby), they be dressed in our College’s Formal Uniform. We will not hesitate to ask any student not dressed in the correct College uniform to leave the venue of Curlew Park. We would also ask our College community NOT to bring their pets (dog/s) to Curlew Park on Saturday. Your assistance with this request is greatly appreciated. Please refer to information supplied on Connect or the College App for details about both times and exact playing venues.
