A Special Session on “Analysis and Assessment of Transportation System Externalities: metho-dological and technological advances” will be organized in IEEE EEEIC and I&CPS Europe 2017 Conference, Milan, Italy.

The increasing mobility demands for passengers and freight have expanded the role of transportation as a source of emission of pollutants and their multiple impacts on the environ-ment. As a result, the transportation sector is becoming one of the main “cause” of several environmental problems such as climate change, air quality, noise, water quality and land take.Currently, the main challenge of any decision-maker is twofold: First to understand and quanti-fy the nature and extent of the relationships between transport and the environment; secondly, to define the strategies and the actions that should be taken to alleviate environmental externa-lities linked to transportation.

Sustainable strategies need • technological enhancements of all the components of the transportation system, • advanced and effective monitoring tools, • effective and robust simulation modelling frameworks, • effective estimation methods.

This special session is aimed at the collection of original papers, mainly focused on the advances in analysis and assessment of three main externalities in transportation systems: physical and chemical pollution, accidents and acoustical noise. Research topics to be considered for a valid submission are (but not limited to) all the topics related to all the transport modes and to the following list:• new strategies, procedures and methodologies to predict and assess the impact of acoustical noise produced by transportation systems;• new strategies, procedures and methodologies to predict and assess the impact of chemical polluting agents produced by transportation systems;• advances in accidents risk assessment and control, and their relation with new technologies in transportation systems;• new technologies or actions for mitigating transportation systems externalities (case studies).• Attitudes, perception and behavior towards environmental externalities;• ITS for sustainable mobility
