COMMODORE’S COMMENTSSummer is approaching the midway point with tons

of activities behind us and a packed calendarremaining.

June started with a great Monday Madness atAlioto’s Restaurant. The venue was perfect for ourmonthly get together. We also discovered that thefacility was more than a cozy bar and a wonderfuldining room. Alioto’s has a banquet area with aprivate bar, an excellent menu and a price that is rightin line for our 60th celebration. The organizingcommittee led by Mary Berg agreed to book Alioto’sfor Saturday September 23rd. Thanks to Dick andKaren Schmidt for hosting the June Monday Madnessand introducing us to Alioto’s.

We had an interesting surprise in June with theChampagne and Cold Duck event. At the last minute,it we decided to add it back to the calendar and havea simplified get together at the McKinley picnic area.While we were gathering we discovered the Pavilionhad been reserved for MBC and at no charge. Moredetails and pictures can be found in this month’sRunabouter. Thanks to Grey Halstead for making thereservations..

In addition to the MBC scheduled events, thingshave been busy with LMYA at Port Washington andthe LMYA SSYC open house. MBC was wellrepresented. It was good to see so many of ourmembers in attendance.

There are lots of things on the calendar for the restof July and August. This week we have the inlandlake cruise and the Milwaukee Airshow, MondayMadness in August at Lake Geneva and theMBC/SSYC Cruise to Racine/Prairie Harbor.

Time to sign off, gotta get ready for the OkaucheeLake Cruise. Captain Dave Dorner reports we aregoing to have a big turnout and good weather. Seeyou all in a coupleof hours.

Scuttlebutt!

The Wagners andBergs ventured out toSummerfest on Sunday,July 2nd...look who theyfound wandering thegrounds. (Bernie wasthere too) Gloria is sucha "trooper".

Dry Dock and WelfarePete Merryfield was having

severe lower back pain that wasprogressively worsening. He wasadmitted to Waukesha MemorialHospital for four days and thentransferred to the Rehabilitation Hospital ofWisconsin for therapy. He has made such greatprogress at this wonderful facility that he’ll becoming home on Saturday. Follow-up treatmentwill include out-patient therapy sessions, Thecause of Pete’s back pain has yet to bedetermined. Please keep Pete in your thoughtsand prayers for a full recovery.

Gangway . . . get out of the wayFrom the Old English gangweg

(passageway), the noun gangway refers tothe passage on a ship's upper deck or, morecommonly, to the portable ramp that is uses to getgoods and people from a ship to a pier, or visa versa.Used as an interjection by sailors and landlubbersalike, gangway means "Get out of the way, I'm comingthrough.

Shove Off . . .to go away or leaveShoving off is the procedure of moving a ship

away from the dock and getting under way. In itsland-based colloquial application, shove off can be anot-so-polite suggestion roughly equivalent to"go takea powder" or "get lost!"

Snub . . . to ignoreFrom the Middle Scandinavian word snubba (a

short stemmed pipe), the word snub describes theprocess of bringing a line or ship to a halt. A line thatis being payed out freely is usually snubbed byhardening down on a few loose turns around the bitt.A ship is snubbed by dropping anchor. A significant contingent ofMBC’ers showed up for the “OnAgain” Champagne/Cold DuckParty. The location was moved tothe McKinley Pavilion after Commodore Scottdiscovered that there was not a charge to reservethe pavilion as long as you have a slip at McKinley.And he discovered that, unbeknownst to us,McKinley had it reserved for MBC.

Champagne, wine, beer, soda, cheese,crackers, italian sausage, watermelon and livelyconversation filled the afternoon. One topic thatcame up in the conversation was to investigate anactual club cruise to the Caribbean next winter forthe sno-fun cruise. If members have an interest,

LMYA RendezvousPort Washington

June 16-17th.

The rendezvous was attended by 24 membersof LMYA including members of SSYC, MBC,South Milwaukee YC, and Port WashingtonYacht clubs.

Friday evening there was an informal meetingof a group of these boaters at the Port Hotel fordinner and drinks. There was a complimentarycatered luncheon on Saturday followed by a shortLMYA update, and a presentation on activities ofthe Friends of Plum and Pilot Island in DoorCounty.

Following that, the group went to the PortExplorium for a tour, and the 1860 light stationon the hill above the town. Both tours were highlyinteresting about the history of the port andshipwrecks that happened off its shores.

Saturday evening, there was a cookout meal,some door prize drawings, and the silent auctionof many useful items donated by yacht clubs andindividual members.

Want to Work ona Currach?

The Irish Currach Clubof Milwaukee is looking forhelp maintaining its fleet ofseven wooden boats andequipment. ICCM is a member of the NorthAmerican Currach Association, along with teamsin Albany, Annapolis, Boston, New London,Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Used for centuries inIreland, the currach has awooden frame and is coveredin painted canvas. Modified forracing in this country, the keel-less boat is 25 feet long andhas four seats. Each rower hastwo oars, each 10 feet long.

Maintenance needs includere-skinning several boats,
