Image 1, shows beams of section 1-1,2-2,,4-4 and 5-5 but for this purpose we are going to

assume that section 2-2 is used for the entire raft.Image 2, is the reinforcements details for the raft slab also showing its sections.

Lots of people are considering building their houses around water bodies and the large portions

of the highbrow areas in Lagos state are waterlogged so the demand for raft foundation is high.tarting with image 1 section 2-2 the dots represents the iron rods runners, these are usuall! the

thic"er of the rods and the! la! them to run round the rings of the raft foundation in this case it is

a 1#mm rod in $ places.

%he ring which is usuall! the thinner one is represented b! the thic" line forming a rectangle of11&&mm ' 225mm (ust as shown on the drawings.

)alculating the runners *1#mm rods+ we need to "now the entire length of the foundation trench*e'cavated portion of the soil+ which we can get from image 2, the trench will be along the

dotted lines that crosses the thic" suare columns or pillars as shown in the drawings, the thic"

suare dots are representing the pillars of the building so the trench are been represented b! the

dotted lines running and (oining all of them, this !ou can easil! calculate since the dimension arealread! given outside the perimeter chec" dimensions -/-)-D and 1-2-0-4-5--

3rom our sums the total length of trench is #5.#m or 21# feets. %herefore the 1#mm rods we

need is *#5.#m ' $ rods+1154 lengths of 1#mm rods.

11meters*m+ is ta"en as the length of a rod so if the total length is *#5.# ' $+ then (ust divide b!11 as was done above then !ou6ll "now the number of rods !ou are to bu! which is 54 lengths inthis case,

If 1#mm rods go for 72&&rod then

total for 1#mm rods72&& ' 547145,&&

1#mm on the drawing is represented as 81#&1 and 81#&2 7ow to calculate the rings , remember the total length of the trench or foundation hole round site

is #5.#m.

will be ta"en as 12mm rods and the! spaced at 0&&mm or &.0m from each other or *center tocenter+ *ee /;< drawings on image 1-0&& cc lin"s+

o "nowing that each ring is 2.45m, we got that b! removing 25mm from the dimensions we

have round the section of 225mm b! 11&&mm, so if !ou remove 5&mm from 225 !ou6ll get15mm same as removing 5&mm *25mm top and bottom of drawings+ for 11&&m will give

1&5&mm , since the! are spaced at 0&&mm to each other ignoring the overlap

that we are supposed to also add (ust for this purpose ,then to)alculate the numbers of rings in total trench,

#5.#m&.0m or #5#&&mm0&&mm21$ rings and each ring is 2.45m, therefore total lengths of

rings

2.45m ' 21$ 50#.55=ods are sold in 11m lengths ,so to "now the numbers of rods !ou are going to bu! , (ust divide
