Chopped Strand Mat

Fiberglass Cloth

These fabrics are used for fiber reinforced plastics such as boats, surfboards, snowmobiles, hockey sticks, tennis rackets and golf clubs. They are designed for high performance and will withstand harsh environmental elements.

Characteristics of fiberglass fabrics for marine and recreational use are: high-strength, durable, stable, lightweight, ductile and moldable.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Chopped Strand Mat is made with glass fibers in a random pattern held together with a powder or emulsion binding agent. This material is available in a variety of weights (ounces per sq. ft.) and roll widths (Commonly, 38”, 50” and 60”).

CHARACTERISTICS: Chopped Strand Mat can produce good modulus (stiffness) when used with core materials or as part of thicker laminates, however; on it’s own it offers relatively weak tensile strength due to short fiber length and random orientation.

USES: CS Mat is easy to wet out and is often used alternatively with heavier fiberglass materials such as woven roving, to improve glass to resin ratio, reduce print through in molding and improve overall adhesion between layers.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Fiberglass cloth is made from single strand glass filaments twisted into glass yarn which in turn is woven into cloth based on a variety of weave patterns and widths. Weights are designated by ounces per sq. yd. and range from 0.75oz. to 40oz.

CHARACTERISTICS: Fiberglass cloth has exceptional specific tensile strength being better than steel wire of the same diameter but with much less weight. It has excellent dimensional stability with low elongation under load (3% or less). It therefore provides superior strength and durability when layered with the appropriate resin in a composite laminate.

USES: The light weight fabrics are used in applications requiring high performance to low weight characteristics such as model boats and RC airplanes or where transparency and smooth surface finishes are desired. Medium weight fabrics are used for sheathing wood such as wooden boat hulls and foam cores such as surfboards. Heavier fabrics are used where higher performance characteristics are needed. Style 120 and 7781 are high performance, high tensile fabrics.

Fiberglass TapesGENERAL DESCRIPTION: Fiberglass tape comes in widths of 2”, 3”, 4”, 6”, 8”, 10” and 12” in 150 ft rolls. This is a plain weave pattern in a 6 oz per sq yd weight. Thickness is approx. 7 mils. Thread count is 18 X 16 (warp X fill).CHARACTERISTICS: This is the same as style 3733 in narrow width material. USES: This material is ideal for edge trim, pipe wrap, small repair kits and wherever narrow width cloth with a sewn edge is useful. Fiberglass tape is available in less than full roll length sold by the lineal foot.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Woven Roving is made up of bundles of unidirectional fiberglass filaments woven into a course heavy weave fabric used in fiberglass laminates to produce modulus and tensile strength through bulk and weight. Woven roving is designated by weight (ounces) per sq yard and comes in a variety of widths. Common weights are 18 oz and 24 oz per sq yd. The sides of the material in the warp direction have a stitched edge to prevent unraveling. CHARACTERISTICS: Woven roving is generally used as part of a lay-up schedule alternatively with chopped strand mat to achieve the desired thickness and strength. Due to the course woven characteristic, this material will use proportionately more resin to wet out. Used alternately with chopped mat improves glass to resin ratios.USES: Popular uses include solid fiberglass laminates such as boat hulls, swimming pools, fiberglass tanks and heavy fiberglass structures.

ORCA Stitch Bonded FabricsGENERAL DESCRIPTION: This fabric combines the high tensile strength of multiple layers of unidirectional fiberglass roving with differing layer orientation, weight per layer and widths. Stitch bonded fabrics allow for improved glass to resin ratios, smoothness and handling properties. Use of optional chopped strand mat on one side reduces labor while enhancing bonding characteristics.CHARACTERISTICS: Stitch bonded materials vary by material weight, number of layers, layer orientation, presence of backing, chopped mat and width. Biaxial material has two layers of roving; triaxial has three and so on. The roving weight is measured by oz per sq yd. and is commonly 18, 24 or 32 oz per sq yd. When a backing mat is added this is measured by weight per sq ft commonly 0.75 and 1.5 oz per sq ft. The orientation of roving on the bias at +/- 45 degrees is designated as “DB” double bias. The orientation of roving on the warp/fill lines of 0/90 degrees is designated as “CDM”.USES: This material is used wherever high performance characteristics need to be tailored into a laminate. By varying layer weights and ply orientations, composite engineers and designers may concentrate laminate strength to specific load and stress requirements. Examples would include wind turbine blades, high performance laminates and fiberglass repairs.

SleevingsBraided sleevings act like a “Chinese Handcuff” easily conforming to parts with changing cross-sections allowing for quick, repeatable lay-up. Braided sleevings are used in a variety of industries, including recreation (hockey sticks, softball bats, paddle shafts), aerospace (propellers, control surfaces, etc.), and inflatable (tent framework, bridge arches, etc.) to name a few. Standard sleevings range from .25” to 24” in diameter and are offered in fiberglass materials.

Gun Roving & Filament WindingGun roving is continuous strand roving used in chopper gun operations. It has good wetting out characteristics, easy chopping, low static and lays down well in the mold.Suitable with polyester and vinylester resins.Filament winding is a fabricating process whereby the fibers are applied directly from the creel or ball onto a mandrel in a variety of orientations controlled by the feeding mechanism and the rotation of the mandrel. This technique is ideal in the fabrication of round, hollow parts such as tanks and pipes.

ORCA-MATGENERAL DESCRIPTION: ORCA-MAT is a low density, non woven continuous strand laminate bulker print control mat containing approximately 45% by volume of microballoons and having a density of 0.045 G/cm².CHARACTERISTICS: ORCA-MAT has excellent wet-out property for unsaturated polyester resins and absorbs about 55% by volume of the resin. No change of thickness is observed even after the resin has been cured. This is the same as style 3733 in narrow width material.

Unidirectional Fiberglass Fabric 90°90° unidirectional fiberglass fabric is constructed with single end rovings in the 90° or weft direction and a lightweight polyester yarn in the 0° direction. This allows all of the reinforcement weight to be in the 90° direction in this unidirectional fabric. This material is used for reinforcing tanks and pipes in the axial direction when a hoop winding is used. Proprietary sizing allows the end-user complete compatibility with Polyester, Vinyl Ester, Epoxy, and Polyurethane resin systems.

ORCA ComboMatThis combination fiberglass fabric consists of a Orca Roving base layer to which a controlled quantity of chopped fiberglass strand is deposited and chemically bonded. This process minimizes the quantity of binder insuring fast wet out and ease of handling not available with other woven/mat fiberglass products. Combomat is thermoformable, an added benefit allowing the end user to preform the reinforcement prior to molding. This fiberglass cloth is ideal for hand lay up molding, resin infusion process, SRIM, RRIM and SCRIMP processes. Orca’s proprietary sizing allows the end user complete compatibility with Polyester, Vinyl Ester, Epoxy, and Polyurethane resin systems.
