Since his NRL debut in 2003, Billy has won nearlyevery Rugby League accolade on offer including theClive Churchill and Dally M Medals and The GoldenBoot Award for the World Player of the Year. Hes alsobeaten a number of highly acclaimed sportsmen to becrowned Australias Greatest Athlete for two yearsrunning. And now, in what may be his most successfulseason yet, this elite player has enjoyed Premiership,State-of-Origin and Trans-Tasman success.

Billys career started at the grass-roots level as afour-year-old with the Innisfail Brothers. But due to achange of heart during his teenage years, his futurenearly took a much different direction. At 15 I quitrugby league, Billy says. I decided to pursue myother love which is horses and ended upworking as a trackwork rider for GaiWaterhouse. Eventually horse racings loss becamethe NRLs gain when a rapid growth spurt put Billyout of contention for racing and saw him revert backto his original sporting vocation.

Considered by many to be the worlds best fullback,Billy appears to have had a dream run. What beganwith a 20 hour drive from Innisfail to Brisbane fortrials, quickly resulted in him being offered a contractwith Storm feeder-team the Brisbane Norths. Aftertwo standout seasons he was recruited to the Stormsfull time squad where hes remained for his entirecareer to date. From there hes been regularly selectedat state and national level where he continues to gofrom strength to strength. But despite all the glory, hiscareer hasnt been without its challenges including anOrigin injury this year that resulted in him beingsidelined for seven weeks.

All in all 2012 has delivered a series of highlights inBillys career. The first of which was breaking therecord of the retired Rhys Wesser to be named mostprolific try-scoring fullback in over 100 years. Butwhile individual achievements are rewarding, its clear

that what Billy values most about his profession is theteamwork. When interviewed by ABC radio after theStorms premiership victory he said, Its just apleasure playing with this lot. You see a lot ofhighlights of people scoring tries and doing specialthings but the work ethic in this group of players andthe willingness to do all that hard work is exceptional.

Now a married father of two, Billy spends much of hisspare time giving back to the game. Hes a regularcontributor to Canterbury Junior Football Club inMelbourne and also supports a number of other juniorsport programs across the country. Admired by manyacross all sporting pursuits he was recently described byAFL legend Sam Newman as "the best player in anyfootball code in the world." And, after just returningfrom a trip to South Africa with his wife Nicole thatincluded swimming with Great White Sharks, it seemsBilly is just as daring off the field as he is on.

Owner Annie Gillow, who admits sheis a little eccentric, is passionateabout her shops and the clothingranges she carefully searches out.She is also adamant about fair

In describing the individual appeal ofher two boutiques Annie says thePalm Cove boutique has that tropicalromance feel, with its historicalpaperbark trees and view of theCoral Sea while her Cairns store issmack bang in the CBD and to suitthe city shopper, is larger and morepractical.

While each boutique has its owncharacter and charm Annie saysthere are factors common to both.

According to Annie, first impressionscannot be relied on when it comes todiscovering the beauty within AnniesLadies Boutiques. My Palm Coveboutique may appear tiny, but believeme, it is full of coveted items. Cairnson the other hand offers you a largervariety of styles and it too, has itsown unique appeal.

Looking back on 2012 thereisnt much Jenny Cavallaro,Cairns Business Women ofthe Year, would change. Ithas been a year of realhighlights for the woman whoworks alongside her husbandWayne in the business theyhave established and growntogether for the last 30 years.

Allaro Homes (formerlyBetter Homes Queensland) isone of the most reveredbuilders in northQueensland, known not onlyfor its quality custom builthomes, but also its warmapproach and family-liketeam.

For Jenny, this has been thecornerstone to the success ofAllaro Homes. Reputationsare built from the inside outand Allaro truly reflects thebusiness, our beliefs and thepeople who work here, shesays proudly.

Jenny believes the transitionfrom Better HomesQueensland to Allaro Homeswas organic and almost

inevitable, allowing thecompany to put in place theframework that would allow itto grow and meet thechanging demands of a moretech-savvy driven consumerkeen to engage in the buildprocess very early on.

In July we showed northQueensland Allaro Homes, but this was just the start.Opportunities come alongand you either see it as achance to grow, betteryourself and exhaust it or youmiss out.

Wayne and Jennys focus overthe last six months has beento drive the new brand,Allaro Homes. This was theirfirst step in a long-term planto establish a franchise modelthat could be replicatedacross Australia.

If you can make it succeedonce, it is just aboutduplication. We prideourselves on the personal andindividualised service we offerbased on our own moral andethical beliefs and we want to

share this with the rest ofAustralia, Jenny adds.

Wayne and Jenny are noweven closer to achieving thisgoal with the recentdevelopment of the AllaroDesign Suite, which was theidea of their son TroyCavallaro, who also works inthe business. The suite issmart, fun, user-friendly andtakes the home buildingexperience to a whole newlevel.

Building a home is a lot offun, and the Allaro DesignSuite embraces this, Waynegoes on to explain. Users areable to store and share theirideas using the pinboard, seek inspiration fromhundreds of designs in theportfolio, keep a track oftheir building selections usingthe check list and mypersonal favourite see aconcept come to life using 3Drendering software.

Taking this even further in2013, will be the introductionof Allaro 3D a cinematic

experience that will bring anew home to life usingsophisticated 3D softwarethat can be shared across anumber of IT platformsincluding mobile devices.

This will be a virtual way ofseeing a new home and willbe an experience that can beshared with friends andfamily. This has never beendone before on this scale andwill give clients theconfidence their dream homeis exactly as they planned toperfection, Wayne says.

Wayne and Jenny continue toprove what many have knownall along that they aretrendsetters, not followers. They are passionate, motivated and driven to pushthe boundaries with one clearobjective to put the clientfirst and ensure every home isplanned to perfection.

If the acronym RDAFNQ&TS is unfamiliar, now isthe time to take note. As oneof the shining stars of 2012,the community-basedRegional DevelopmentAustralia Far NorthQueensland and Torres Strait(RDA FNQ&TS) is focused onits endeavour to provide onevery loud and unified regionalvoice.

A relatively new organisation, since its launch in 2010, theRDA FNQ&TS exists to bringtogether, lead and support themany organisations andindividuals of this regionfocusing on this region and itsfuture prosperity. RDAFNQ&TS builds regionalconsensus about the mostcritical things that need tohappen via combined State,Federal, Local Governmentand industry action. RDA FNQ&TS believes theregion must take charge of itsown destiny and to treat boththe State and FederalGovernments and other majorinvestors as the regions key

    Dr Allan Dale

development partners. It takesa direct negotiation approachright to the heart of the policyand budget processes of bothGovernments and theboardrooms of corporateAustralia.

Associate Professor Allan Dale, having been jointly appointedby both State andCommonwealth RegionalDevelopment Ministers, ismore than qualified to resideas Chairman at the helm ofRDA FNQ&TS. As a FarNorth Queenslander with agreat passion for this region,Allan is the right person at theright time for this influentialrole. As the current ResearchLeader on Tropical RegionalDevelopment at James CookUniversitys Cairns Institute,Allans research work meansthat he is deeply across some ofthe regions biggest challenges, including major projectdecision making, Indigenousand agricultural sectordevelopment, adaptation toclimate change and thesustainable management of

the regions water, energy andnatural resources. His historical understanding ofthe region is equally deep.Having grown up at TrinityBeach, the five brothers inAllans family have collectivelyworked in nearly every sector inthe Far Norths economy, including the pastoral, fishing, forestry, mining, aviation, agricultural and tourismindustries. Over many years, hisparents, Val and Harry Dalealso deeply served thecommunity through NavalCadets (TS Endeavour), WarWidows, Red Cross and othercivic roles.

His own work history acrossCape York, the Gulf andTorres Strait also means Allanthinks whole of region. Hebelieves that Cairns relies on itshinterland economy as much asthe hinterland relies on Cairns.

Before joining JCU, many mayalso remember Allan leadingTerrain NRM, thecommunity-based naturalresource body for the WetTropics. He grew thatnot-for-profit organisation froma $2million to a $15 milliondollar annual tunrover in lessthan five years, mainly bymaking the case for anddelivering sound governmentand private sector investment inthe region. This included thevery successful $200 million,Reef Rescue Program, recentlylauded by the Commonwealthas its flagship program insecuring big environmentaloutcomes through industryinnovation.

It was Allans experience in thehalls of Government in thedeep South, however, thatconvinced him to come home, and to tackle the real challengesfacing the region on home turf. With two stints in the StateGovernment dealing with bignatural resource and

development issues, Allanbecame convinced that regionswaiting for Government actionwill be waiting a long time. Tomake things happen, regionsneed to build the evidence foraction and then inviteGovernments in asdevelopment partners.

Dr Dale said this last year inparticular has provided manyinsights, changes andchallenges for the RDAFNQ&TS. While the Cairnseconomy is making a strongcomeback from the GFC andthe impact of the high Aussiedollar, the regional economynow requires strengthening, diversification andreinforcement to stay positiveand to prevent a boom-bustfuture.

The RDA FNQ&TSsRegional Road Map hasidentified the need for ourregion to establish a series ofcomplimentary industries (inaddition to agriculture, miningand tourism) such as tropicalknowledge, digital economy, renewable energy andgreen-build industries. We alsohave to revive some of our pastmarine and aviation sectorstrengths and attractgovernment and corporateservices to share in the regionsoutstanding lifestyle values.

Dr Dale said that while theRDA FNQ&TS is working atimplementing its RegionalRoad Map strategies, his fellowcommittee members andCEO, Sonja Johnson, share anoverarching drive to present aunited front on strategy and todirectly influence governmentpolicy and investment. Ibelieve the unity of purposewithin and across the regionhas strengthened over the last18 months, and there is nowreal cooperation emergingbetween the various groupswith a role to play.

To say Amanda Macor is a woman of many hats istrue in more ways than one. On top of being a stylishfashionista with a successful millinery label, she is alsothe business owner of Brow Babes and a devoted wifeand mother of two. As someone already wellrespected in local circles, her achievements over thelast twelve months are sure to cement her statusnationwide.

    Amanda Macor

After growing up in the Northern Territory withher father a jockey and her mother a bookiesclerk, racing has always been in Amanda's blood. But it was only later when she tried her hand atmillinery while working at a hair salon in Cairnsthat she managed to combine her creative flairwith her love for the industry. Ive always had agenuine interest in making other people look andfeel the best that they can, Amanda says. And inthe beginning it worked around having youngchildren and being flexible.

Now with over 20 years in the business, Amandadivides her time between designing, running hersalon and various committee commitments. Asthe name suggest, Brow Babes specializes incustom eyebrow treatments as well as spray tans, lashes, makeup, and image direction offering thelatest technology and techniques to clients,Ournew 30 minute Hydrafacial service can restoreyouthful, healthy skin and achieve instant lastingresults without the fuss or mess of a conventionalfacial treatment, she says.

While Amandas work has long been recognizedin the racing industry, 2012 has brought a stringof successes thats taken her brand to a whole newlevel. Her collaboration with Michalenko byAppointment has resulted in the two labelsdesigning for the fashion winners for Cairns Cup,Amateurs and various other race meetings aroundAustralia. Another highlight was meeting andtalking hats with London milliner Philip Treacyand being invited to teach at the 2013 Hats OffTo Brisbane Convention, Amanda says.

And just last month at the Myer Fashions on theField at the Melbourne Cup Spring RacingCarnival, Amandas run of luck continued. Afterbeing named the first runner-up on MelbourneCup Day and then winner on Oaks Day, she thentook out the Victorian sash before comingrunner-up in the National Final. It just goes toshow no matter who you are, what your age if youput yourself out there and dress for yourself, goodthings can and do happen, she says. And to topoff an incredible trip, Amanda was also featuredin Grazia magazine as their "Favorite Fashionista"of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Despite the fact that she has very little left toprove, Amanda still has ambitious plans for thefuture. I live and breathe our culture and Imconstantly updating our skills and searching forinnovative products and treatments, she says. Ihope to continue to provide the best I can to ourclients and hopefully expand the business further.

Yetdespite their extensiveexperience, they saytheir work is stronglyguided by their subjectas they attempt tocapture not only animage but the hopes anddreams of an individual.

Apart from the manyawards adorning theshelves of their Cairnsstudio, what stands outmost is the friendly, inviting atmosphere. Itsan intimate process so wewant people to feelspecial and aware of ourmany styles, saysCharmaine. In fact, Peterand Charmaine spend agreat deal of time gettingto know their clients andencourage them to beactively involved in thecreative process. Webegin with a flatteringpicture to capture thefamily and for somepeople thats enough, says Peter. But whereverpossible we like to take ita step further byincorporating the familysinterests or slant on lifeand turning it into apiece of art.

Peter and Charmaine goto extreme lengths totailor every project to theclient by taking intoconsideration theirpersonality right throughto their choice of dcor. One interesting exampleof their creative insight isevident in a piece createdfor twin sisters. Separatedby adoption, the imagecaptures the twinsreunited in adulthoodsitting on a couch jointlyholding a photo ofthemselves as children.Adding to the symbolismare two very distinctbackgrounds, which arelayered behind thewomen to represent theirdifferent upbringings one in the country andone in the city.

2012 has certainly been arewarding year for Peterand Charmaine with

each taking out a numberof industry awards, Notonly was Charmainenamed the Canon AIPPIllustrative Photographerof the Year for the fourthtime, she was alsoawarded the title ofCreative AsiaPhotographer of the Year.I was so overwhelmedwhen I won the trip toParis I was laughingand crying at the sametime, she says. And Petercertainly hasnt comeaway empty handed aftertaking out a number ofawards this year includingthe Creative Asia PortraitPhotographer of the Year.

Although focussed ontaking their work to thenext level, Peter andCharmaine are alsomindful that customerscan be limited by timeand budget restraints. Its about adjusting thestyle to suit theindividual, says Peter. Some people like theirart to be more straightforward while others liketo explore thepossibilities. So, in orderto give more people aninsight into theHighlights ExperiencePeter and Charmaine areoffering an introductorysitting with a 25cm printfor only $99. I getextremely excitedcreating something forsomebody that they willalways cherish, saysPeter. Something thatencapsulates the emotionthat they were feeling atthe time.

Ten years ago day spas were seen as a luxuryor something you did for a special occasion orwhile on vacation, she says. Today people area lot more savvy, they want more value for their

dollar. They dont want to feel betterbecause of some ladida priceytreatment, they want a real change.

Jennifers current business, BeautySpa Club International at The Pier, takes an holistic approach to health

and beauty improving a persons healththrough their wellbeing. In practice this meansthere is a purpose behind every treatment.

    Jennifer BowdenBeauty Spa Club International

Take for example a body wrap. Its a way todetox, removing excess water and targeting fattytissue. When people start to lose weight they feelbetter and gain energy, which improves theirhealth mentally and physically.

Everything we do here has a specific target, allfocused on improving ones well being. There isan actual physical change that takes place. Dayspas that focus purely on pampering clients aresadly closing their doors.

Jennifer admits she has experienced many of thepitfalls of the industry herself. She started outdesigning and building day spas before opening14 throughout Australia and Asia, but forvarious reasons they didnt survive and Jenniferconsolidated her holdings to focus on hercurrent spa.

2012 has been our toughest year and in somerespects our business has grown because othershavent survived. But our clients wouldnt keepreturning if we didnt do what we do well. Youcontinually have to change with technology tokeep growing, she says.

One of those technologies is the SkinRemodeling System, for a non-surgical facelift. It combines several widely recognised agereversal technologies, which previously had tobe applied separately in a long and tediousprocess.

There are currently only three of these units inQueensland, to have one in Cairns is a realbenefit to the people of TNQ.

For their first treatment, we do one side of theclients face and let them compare in a mirror. Its amazing the treated side is what we like tothink we look like. Of course the treatmentcontinues to the other side, we wouldnt letpeople walk out lopsided, Jennifer laughs.

Obviously there is a lot more to day spas thanmany people expect - from remedial massage tofacials targeting skin conditions. But never fear, there are still plenty of options for a spot ofpampering, after all a break from the hustle andbustle is also a key to better health.

Jennifer Bowden has seen a lot of changes in the dayspa industry since she opened a day spa a decadeago. What hasnt changed is her no-nonsenseapproach that brings about a real difference for herclients.

Since establishing CupcakeCreations four years ago, it seemsthat serving freshly baked productsdirect to the public is just a smallslice of what this industriouswoman has to offer. Now in 2012,she has seen her career come fullcircle returning to her teachingroots to run a school holidaycourse in cake decoration.

Born and raised in Cairns,Lyndsey initially worked as apre-school teacher which includeda stint overseas before finding hertrue calling. When I returned toCairns I wanted a change. I knewthat cupcake stores were becomingpopular and I have always lovedbaking so I decided to dive in andgive it a go, she says. Inspired byher parents who are also businessowners, she has now realized alifelong dream of becoming herown boss. My parents have beensuch amazing role models for mysister and I and now I couldn'timagine going back to work forsomeone.

Positioned in the Civic ShoppingCentre, Cupcake Creations givescustomers the feeling of steppingback in time. The retro designed,lolly-pink dcor with jars of sweetsand tiered cake stands adorningthe counter, caters to every childs(and big kids) dream. Offeringcupcakes for all occasionsincluding birthdays, weddings, baby showers, work functions and

Affectionately knownas the Queen ofCupcakes, LyndseyCrossland is theproud owner of theonly dedicatedcupcake specialtystore in Cairns.

charity events, Lyndsey pridesherself on offering only the bestquality homemade products. You can only buy my cupcakesfrom my store which means theyare always freshly baked that dayas we don't sell them past the daythey are baked, she says.

In addition to over the countersales and special orders, CupcakeCreations is becoming increasinglypopular for childrens parties. Runover a two-hour period for up to10 guests, the parties offer a fun, safe environment for budding chefsto learn to bake and decorate. Andof course Lyndsey has also addedanother string to her bow byrecently running a week-longdecorating course for kids atCairns Central. Having been apre-school teacher this was a realhighlight for me she says. Wewere able to get through 720children in the week we werethere!

Lyndsey says another highlight for2012 has been the introduction ofa specialised printing machine thatenables her to print logos andvarious images onto an edible icingthat can be placed onto thecupcakes. It's become verypopular with corporate clients, she says. And as far as what thefuture holds, Lyndsey says she hasa number of other ideas in thepipeline. I don't want to discloseanything yet but I swearCairnsLife will get the exclusivewhen they come to fruition! shelaughs.

    Welcome toCairns Urology

Awareness and early detection is the key to

    prevention and treatment.

This clinic provides a full range of Urological services with extensive equipment enabling us to perform procedures

here or through the Day Surgery, whereas

    patients previously required hospitalisation.

This is not only more convenient for our

patients but is often at considerable cost

    savings.

Chris Ah Gee will be the head judge and mentor forCairns Has Got Talent 2013 19-26th Janaury atCairns Central. Chriss first album "The King ofNothing" launches on ITunes on the 20th of January!

Q: When Did you start singing?A. I started singing when I was 17 years old inmusicals around cairns for a hobby, however it wasafter a break up that I truly began to delve into Musicespecially the vocal side!I never had lessons I just practiced day after daydoing gigs and busking to refine my singing. Mypassion to perform really pushed me to keep ongoing.

Q: What Kickstarted your career?A. I guess it was my first Solo gig at Havana MusicCafe' a year ago, I am very lucky, I was given a gigwhen I had barely any experience or songs to play. But after the first one I watched as I improved andmy set list grew larger, my "act" became a bit morepolished and I began to get more and more gigs. Oneof the other things was the Audition I had forAustralia's Got Talent 2012 which landed me suchgigs as the Guest Judge for "Cairns Central's Got

Talent" and the support act for "Stan Walker" :) Being involved with both Cairns Has Got Talent andsupporting such a great Aussie artist like Stan Walker really helped to me to the next level in mycareer.

Q: What is the best thing you get out of singing?A. I think the greatest reward about singing is you always walk away knowing you are doing exactlywhat you love and you realise how lucky you are to be able to do this. I have never really done a gigthat I haven't seen the audience walk away with an enjoyable experience! You need to take everychance you get to perform or develop as a performer. This is probably a huge reason why I'm soexcited about being apart of Cairns Has Got Talent 2013, it really gives the chance for kids youngand old to get up and show us what skills they have.

Q: Who is your Idol and Why?A. Honestly I have so many Idols! I have spent the last 2 and a half years learning from youtubevideos so I have an attachment to all of the musicians that have "Helped or Trained me." However anew one that has been so inspiring to me would have to be Matt Corby, I love his story, his talent andalso his creativeness listening to his music always puts me in the "Songwriting mood."

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?A. I really hope to see myself as a more successful version of who I am now! I hope to be touring, playing festivals and be known as a recognised recording artist throughout Australia :) it is a big goalbut I figure I might as well aim super high! I plan to really push that forward with the launch of myfirst EP...stay tuned!

Q: What is the best advice you could give to aspiring singers?A. The best advice I can give is to take anything that comes your way! work on yourself and be opento all criticism constructive and detrimental. The feedback I have recieved from my support team andmentors has been so beneficial and that is probably why I'm so pumped to be able to mentor all thefresh talent during Cairns Has Got Talent in January. It all counts and the more you can reflect onyour flaws and focus to eliminate them the faster you will see a major improvement in your skills andattitude towards music!

Local owners, local staff, local seafood make a Splash

Splash Seafood Restaurant may be on Cairns busiest tourist strip but it istruly a local affair owned by locals, staffed by locals and supportinglocal fishermen by using only wild caught Queensland seafood.

Since the doors opened 10 years ago, owners Megan and MalcolmMcKay have focused on creating a warm, welcoming environment, providing the highest quality seafood in a relaxed setting.

Whether its freshly shucked oysters, the deep sea laksa packed with gulfprawns, reef fish and east coast scallops or a more traditional fish andchips featuring your choice of the fish of the day, barramundi or mahimahi, you can be sure the star of the dish has not long been out of theocean.

Perhaps the biggest achievement at Splash is bringing such top quality tothe table at such a reasonable price, and catering to people of all walks oflife - a couple on a romantic night out, work group celebrating the end ofthe week or a family looking for some tantalising tastes without thewashing up.

Im a mum myself with two kids and a busy business, Megan says. Itsreally important to us that our customers get the experience they arelooking for.

Splash therefore includes a kids menu accompanied by paper andcrayons along with vegetarian, meat, chicken and gluten-free options.

is located on the Cairns Esplanade, right in the heart of Cairns (Ground Floor, Trilogy Esplanade Apartments).

Another year has gone by, the dry season hascome and gone, the showers have yesunfortunately come again, and the holiday seasonis upon us once more. Time for celebration, timefor cheer, time for friends and family to be near. What better way to celebrate and show your lovethen to crack open a few bottles of wine?

There are a lot of gatherings over the holidays sobasically anything goes. Try and change it upthis year with a few wine cocktails to enjoy thehot summer day. Why not a mimosa forbreakfast? Add a splash of orange juice to asparkling wine, and a few fresh raspberries for agarnish. Its always a party favourite. In theafternoon, try mixing up a sangria for the beachand seafood feast. Take a bottle of white or redwine, mix it with ice, fresh oranges, lemons andlimes, a few splashes of Triple Sec, and maybe afew strawberries and grapes tossed in. Serve itlike you would a punch. Its a nice refreshingway to enjoy a nice bottle of wine with the saltybreeze.

Wine ReviewIf youre a plain and simple kind of a person anice sparkling wine will do the trick throughoutthe day as well as for that midnight cheers tocelebrate the New Year. One of my favouritesis the Sieur dArques Aimery Grand Cuvee1531. I did a blind tasting a few months backand this sparkling was paired to a bottle ofexpensive Champagne and most peoplethought this bottle was the expensive one. For$14.90 a bottle it is a bargain you will love. Itis a creamy, and toasty, traditional Frenchsparkling wine sourced from the oldestsparkling wine region in the world. How couldyou go wrong?

If none of these ideas sound good to you, thenwhen in doubt, crack those bottles youve beensaving for a special occasion! Have a safe andhappy holiday and a wonderful New Year!

    Happy swirling, glass filling
