INTRODUCTION

The assigned task is to study 2 trade or businesses in the Klang Valley and another place, with the condition that the studied businesses that must have been around for at least 10 -15 years.

Our group decided to study cafés as we are interested in the coffee culture that has gained increasing popularity in the recent years.

Our chosen café within the Klang Valley is AM PM Café whereas the chosen café outside of Klang Valley is Calanthe Café

An old traditional coffee shop located at Jonker Street, Melaka

Originally one store, Calanthe Café is now two combined stores.

Open everyday except Thursday. Mon – Wed : 2.00 pm to 11.00 pm Fri : 12.00 pm to 12.00 am Sat : 8.30 am to 12.00 am Sun : 8.30 am to 11.00 pm

There are two sitting places the customers can choose from which is inside or outside.

The decorations for Calanthe Café are more to traditional Chinese style.

There are lanterns hung at the awning of the roof.

Some pictures of their famous dishes are shown above the entrance to the cafe.

The furnitures are made of wood – you will have that feeling that you have travelled back in time back into the older days where mostly everything is mode of wood.

Inside the cafe, there are a lot of artworks. These artworks are either hung on the wall of dangling above our heads or just place on some shelf. They are very nice to admire.

Calanthe Café is famous for their 13 States’ Coffee where different states have their own coffee tastes.

This cafe is kind of dim as they want to give the nostalgic feeling to the customers who goes there.

•  AM PM Café Situated at a strategic location, situated at USJ 21/5, Subang Jaya

From the appearance, the café looks like it occupies only the first floor – it actually owns the whole block, all 3 levels of it.

This café has very good service and their workers are all very friendly and polite.

They sell western food, deserts and coffee, big breakfast style.

•  AM PM Café Main customer source: Workers around the area and family and friends around the neighbourhood.

Weekdays – they serve around 60 to 100 customers per day,

open from 11 am - 12 midnight.

Weekend – the café is usually packed with people. Customers that come a bit later have to wait outside the shop for empty tables,

open from 10 am -12 midnight

•  AM PM Café First floor consists of half air-condition and half open-air space at the entrance of the shop. Second and third floor only is only air-conditioned – there is no open-air space. The furniture on the first floor consists of wooden furniture only. On the second and third floor the furniture is more relaxing in nature, consisting of mostly sofas There are also board games in the second and third floor. These board games are free to play with.

COMPARISONS CAL ANTHE CAFÉ AMPM CAFÉ Coffee. The founders have a large interest and passion in coffee, have traveled across Malaysia and tasted the coffees in different states. All the types of coffee we brought into their restaurant and with each serving of coffee; customers may choose how the coffee is made and served.

Since the café concept is mainly based on breakfast dishes, their main products are Big Breakfast, Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Omelets, French Toast and Scones.

Since their café is located on Jonker Walk in Malacca, most of their customers consists of students and tourists from other countries and from other states as well.

Their location is positioned around other shop houses and housing areas. Hence, their customers mostly consist of students and families.

They do not see other businesses as their competitors. However, they do see the nearby cafes as potential competitor. These cafes are Old Town White Coffee, Starbucks and Geographer Café.

Mostly their main competitor is the next-door café, Coffeezzo. They see other cafes in the Subang area as their competitors also, but not affected as much in comparison to Coffeezzo.

ERE The atmosphere of the café is very natural and consists a lot

of nature elements. Most of the designs of the tables and chairs are uncoordinated and different, whilst also having vines and other plants scattered all over the floor with a stepping stones as flooring in some rooms. On the walls they painted many random designs and in the middle of the hallway is a small pond.

The atmosphere of the café is mostly relaxing and modern atmosphere with a few dim yellow lights to create a relaxing environment to the restaurant. Most of the tables of chairs are cushioned and arranged properly. The top floor is very family friendly with board games at one side of the floor.

RECOMMENDATIONS

•  Rent few parking spaces for customers so the customers do not have to walk so far to get to the cafe.

•  Put more chairs and tables for bigger families.

•  Provide special table and parking space for handicaps.

•  Buy next door shop and renovate to make a larger space for the cafe. They can hang big mirrors to create the illusion of larger space.

RECOMMENDATIONS

•  Rent few parking spaces nearby for customers who made reservations.

•  Build a ramp in front of the shop so the handicapped can enjoy eating at this cafe as well.

•  Prepare at least two high chairs for babies as their customers are mostly families.

•  Provide kids menu to attract children.

•  Create new signature dishes and drinks to attract more customers.
