CANDYHAY WAI LENG

She is an interior designer of twelve years and forthose years, she has spent her time working withPalladio Interiors Sdn. Bhd.She started off as any otheraverage Sciencestreamed student until she piquedher interest to arts. Her in particular, she likes the lookof detailed drawings as to how they connect and servetheir function. Prior and during her degree, she startedher practical and assets training. After getting into theInterior Designing course, she was then more exposedto aspects of interior designing.

When she joined Palladio Interiors Sdn. Bhd., it wasstill a small company which comprises of only fourstaff members, including herself. Over time, throughaggressive marketing, and quality customer servicesand practices, they as a company have managed toachieve great heights within the construction industryand won multiple awards such as the MalaysianInterior Design Award (MIDA) in 2009.

hen questioned on why did she choose to work in Palladio Sdn. Bhd., Ms. Candy answered that sincethe company started off very small, she and her smallgroup of staff built the company together and over time, they built a close bond and that bond is still going onstrong even with new designers coming in. In other words, the company is like a family to her. Aside from that, personally starting with a small company gave her theopportunity to learn more and more as she goes along andgrow bigger. Hence, she is very happy to say that she hasmade the right choice.

W

one that she would recommend would be the Verve Suitesin Mont Kiara whereas the other is justregular offices thatare located closer to the endusers such as in residentialareas.

In total, though notentirely accurate, Ms.Candy estimated tohave been involved inat least thirty projectsover the past twentyyears. Two of herrecent projects, one

I n order to be an interior designer (or any other occupations), firstly, one needs passion. To quote Ms.Candy, “Passion is very important.” One needs to like thework he or she is doing. Secondly, he or she needs to behardworking. He or she needs to spend a lot of time toexplore and really work into it because there are so manythings to explore about. When talking about interiordesign,it's not just simply about lightings, furniture,

floorings, ceilingsand fabrics.Forexample,fabrics.There are manytypes of fabricswith their veryown distinct

textures and colours. There are a lot of things that playinto factor and one needs to really know the kind ofmaterials are suited for whatever occasions.

D epending on the projects interior designers are based on they are to work closely with architects but their job

lean more towards giving consultations to their clients about

design and finances. They provide consultations for clients and

endusers as well as those who are involved in the early stages

of construction such as the developers.

Interior designers work closely with all the consultants and

construction team—architects, landscapers, all the way to the

construction workers. Though it may seem that interior

designers only intervene during the final stages of construction

but in fact they are needed from the beginning and all the way

through out the phases (Pre, During & Post Construction),

working along side with everyone of the construction team in

every step of the way.

In preconstruction, they are required to have very detailed

drawings in order to conceptualise ideas and concepts as well

as to tend to problems before starting the construction itself.

At this point, communication amongst the construction team is

very important, as it is a necessity for each and every one of

them to understand the ideas and drawings conceived during

this phase. In reality and due to the common nature of clients or

endusers, however, lastminute changes would need to be

done. Hence, this is not where the ideas are finalised.

Interior designers spend a lotof their time on site duringthe construction phase, working alongside thecontractors and constructionworkers to keep in check andkeep on track of the project. They are also needed to takeinto account of whateverproblems the contractors andconstruction workers mayencounter and either quicklyfind a solution or move on tosomething else

“After Service” is a termused to describe the postconstruction phase. This issimply customer servicewhere the interior designerstend to clients’ or endusers’complaints. Should they beunsatisfied with the interiordesigners’ work, they wouldprovide support in whateverway possible, which wouldresult into ensuring theircustomer’s trust.
