OFFICE OF THE BISH OP
M y dear Broth ers and Sisters in Christ, Lent 201 4
This year, 2014, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of a significantdocument of the Second Vatican Council, Lumen entium (Dogmatic Constitution on theChurch). The fifth chapter of this document is entitled The Universal Call to Holiness in theChurch . W e read in this chapter, Therefore all in the Church, whether belong ing to thehierarchy or are being cared for by it, are called to holiness. (L G 39). This statement is
significant because we are reminded that it is not simply clergy and religious who are called tolead holy lives - we are all called to be holy. This principal is not unique to the teachings of the
Second Vatican Council. M ore than three hundred years earlier a great saint had already writtenabout this in a popular sp iritual work .
St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) published a book entitled Introduction to the DevoutLife in 1608. This was a collection of many of his thoughts regarding the way to holiness and
was unique because, unlike m ost of the spiritual works of this era, the book was prim arily for lay
people. St. Francis was consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Geneva in Switzerland at a timewhen the diocese was experiencing the effects of the Reformation. M any Catholics h ad left theChurch and others were aggressively suppressing the faith. St Francis set about to renew his
diocese through patience, love and gentle persuasion. A significant aspect of this renewal wasteaching people that the pursuit of holiness was not jus t for priests, monks or nuns, but also forordinary people. St. Francis believed that true devotion only helps and never hinders faith
because it leads to holiness. He writes: When God created the world He commanded each treeto bear fruit after its kind; and even so He bids C hristians, th e living trees of His Church, to bringforth fruits of devotion, each one according to his kind and vocation....the devotion which is truehinders nothing, but on the contrary it perfects everything; and that which runs counter to therightful vocation of any one is, you may be sure, a spurious devotion. Aristotle says that the beesucks honey from flowers without damaging them, leaving them as whole an d fresh as it foundthem; but true devotion does better still, for it not only hinders no manner of vocation or duty, but, it adorns and beautifies all. Throw precious stones into honey, and each w ill grow m orebrilliant according to its colour: and in like manner everybody fulfills his special calling betterwhen subject to the influence of devotion: family duties are lighter, married love truer, service to
our King more faithful, every kind of occupation more acceptable an d better performed wherethat is the guide (Introduction to the Devout Life Ch . 3). For St. Francis true devotion isrooted in love of God. He believed that God is love and that the devou t life leads to divine
love. Just as a flame and fire are one so too are devotion and love.

Reflection Are you aware of God’s presence that is always
within you?
Do you live in the present moment by not beingoverly concerned about past mistakes or futurechallenges?
Do you pray and keep in the presence of God inboth good times and bad?
How vital is your relationship with God at thismoment?
Let nothing disturb you, nothing affright you; All things are passing, God never changes.Patient endurance attains all things;Who God possesses in nothing is wanting:
Alone God suffices. (St. Teresa of Avila) For the Ride Home by Ted Bergh © ParishVision LLC 2014.ParishVision.org
