EXPLORATION OF SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES

Am I my brother’s and sister’s keeper? Am I the world’s keeper? Would you like to explore and live spiritual principles in a deeper way? Would you like to read and discuss spirituality with other parishioners? If yes, please accept the invitation of the Social Justice Committee to join our monthly virtual discussion and reflection on spiritual principles.

Our discussion continues Tuesday, March 9th, from 7 to 8 PM, with a discussion of Chapter 2 of the Pope’s 2015 letter (encyclical) to all people of the world entitled “Laudato Si – On Care of Our Common Home”. It’s not too late to join us this month or any month:

April 13th – Chapter 3, May 11th – Chapter 4, June 8th- Chapter 5, July 13th - Chapter 6

You may buy Laudato Si in book format or download a free copy online. The discussions will take place virtually, via Zoom. The Catholic Women of Harlem would like to award a scholarship of $1000.00 to a student that has less-than stellar academic performance. To qualify for this award, one must be an active member of a parish with the pastor’s approval, one must be accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning, and most importantly submit an essay. The essay should recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you and what did you learn from the experience? All requirements must be completed and submitted by May 3, 2021. Please submit a cover letter requesting consideration, (must have pastor's signature), a copy of acceptance letter, and the essay. Lenten Revival in English This Sunday, March 14th, marks the One Year anniversary of the Coronavirus restrictions on our Parish worship. March 15, 2020 was the last time when either St. Charles Borromeo or Resurrection hosted Masses without any restrictions placed on attendance or physical spacing or masks or handshaking or fellowship or holy water or hymnals or bulletins. Although we continue to praise the God of Jesus Christ in the Parish, so much has changed in how we do that. There may never be a way to go back to where we were a year ago. We do better to think about doing a new thing and opening a new chapter in the life of this Parish. We might be helped by the REVIVAL which has been planned for the Catholic Churches of Harlem on Saturday, March 20th, at 6pm and Sunday, March 21st, at 3pm at St. Charles Borromeo. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity for Spiritual Renewal which fervent prayer, good preaching and good music can offer. A REVIVAL always offers a new vision for a way forward in our relationship with God. We are pleased to welcome Fr. Joseph Espaillat, Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua, as our REVIVAL Preacher. We also welcome the music ministry of Mr. BrVon Neal with our Praise and Worship Ministry and our Gospelites. The days of our REVIVAL will be available for attendance in Person at St. Charles Borromeo (please call ahead to indicate your desire to attend). You may also attend the REVIVAL online through the Parish website: scbrchurch.org Prayer and Consecration to St. Joseph: March 19 Pope Francis, recalling the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church, has proclaimed 2021 a “Year of Saint Joseph”. Being dedicated to the protection of Saint Joseph of the Holy Family, the Harlem Parish at 125th Street invites the everyone to join us on the 19th of March to celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, whom Pope Francis said is “a beloved, tender, and obedient father”. Ms Norma Marshburn Another of the towering figures of faith in our Harlem Catholic community has recently passed from this life to the next. Norma Marshburn was a committed, active and well loved member of the Parish of St. Charles Borromeo, Resurrection and All Saints. She passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2021, at Lenox Hill Hospital in the company of her loving sons, Howard and Ronald. Norma was so integrated into the life of the Parish. She belonged to the Altar Rosary Society, the Cursillo Movement, the Collection Committee, the Holy Sepulchre and the Catholic Women of Harlem. She a was formerly President of the Harlem Vicariate Council and a former member of the Parish Council. Norma was a tough-mind woman who loved this Parish and stood behind us in our advocacy and our prayer. I will miss her presence, particularly at Sunday Mass, very much. Her funeral will be at St. Charles Borromeo on Tuesday, March 16th, at 11am. There will be a viewing from 9:30am to 11 am in the Church. The funeral will be livestreamed from our website: scbrchurch.org In Need of a Cook If you have an interest in cooking, a talent for cooking and the time (3pm to 7pm) on weekdays. There is a home with three adults looking for a mature adult capable of providing supper meals on weekdays. Occasional shopping may be required. Este domingo 14 de marzo marca el primer aniversario de las restricciones del coronavirus en el culto de nuestra parroquia. El 15 de marzo de 2020 fue la última vez que San Carlos Borromeo o Resurrection organizaron misas sin restricciones impuestas a la asistencia, al espacio físico, máscaras, estrecharse las manos, compañerismo, agua bendita, himnarios o boletines. Aunque seguimos alabando al Dios de Jesucristo en la parroquia, mucho ha cambiado en la forma en que lo hacemos. Puede que nunca haya una manera de volver a donde estábamos hace un año. Es mejor pensar en hacer algo nuevo y abrir un nuevo capítulo en la vida de esta parroquia.

Es posible que nos ayude el REVIVAL que ha sido planeado para las Iglesias Católicas de Harlem el sábado 20 de marzo a las 6 pm y el domingo 21 de marzo a las 3 pm en San Carlos Borromeo. Animo a todos a aprovechar la oportunidad de la Renovación Espiritual que pueden ofrecer la oración ferviente, la buena predicación y la buena música. UN AVIVAMIENTO siempre ofrece una nueva visión de un camino a seguir en nuestra relación con Dios.

Sra. Norma Marshburn

Otra de las figuras destacadas de la fe en nuestra comunidad católica de Harlem ha pasado recientemente de esta vida a la siguiente. Norma Marshburn era un miembro comprometida, activa y muy querida de la Parroquia de San Carlos Borromeo, Resurrección y Todos los Santos. Falleció el domingo 7 de marzo de 2021 en el Hospital Lenox Hill en compañía de sus amados hijos, Howard y Ronald. Norma estaba muy integrada en la vida de la Parroquia. Perteneció a la Sociedad Altar Rosary, el Movimiento de Cursillos, el Comité de Ofrendas, el Santo Sepulcro y las Mujeres Católicas de Harlem. Fue presidenta del Consejo del Vicariato de Harlem y ex miembro del Consejo Parroquial. Norma era una mujer de mente determinada que amaba esta parroquia y nos respaldaba en nuestra defensa y oración. Extrañaré mucho su presencia, especialmente en la misa dominical.
