LAETARE SUNDAY Today, the Fourth Sunday in Lent, is known as Laetare Sunday, a day of joyful anticipation. Lent is now half over and Easter is enticingly near. Laetare comes from the first words of the traditional Latin entrance (Introit) for the Mass of the day: Laetare Jerusalem (Rejoice Jerusalem) from Isaiah 66:10. With the prom-ise of Easter at last within sight, the austerity of Lent is relaxed a bit today. The vestments worn by the priest may be rose-colored instead of the more somber violet, and flowers may adorn the altar.

JOIN US FOR OUR PARISH MISSION THIS WEEK Monday, March 15 through Wednesday, March 18, in honor of the Year of Saint Joseph, the Basilica of Saint Mary is hosting a parish mission entitled: Guardian of the Redeemer, Protect and Lead Us! Conducting the mission is Father Wade Menezes of the Fathers of Mercy. He is preaching at our Masses this weekend and will celebrate the 12:10 p.m. Masses on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On those three days, he will offer a mission reflection follow-ing the 12:10 p.m. Mass and again at 7 p.m. He also will hear confessions from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon and before and after his evening presentation. SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUSE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY March 19 is the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The foster father of Jesus has been honored on March 19 since the end of the 10th century. He was declared the Patron of the Universal Church in 1870 by Pope Pius IX and Guardian of the Redeemer by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1989. March 19 also is the anniversary of the inauguration of Pope Francis in Saint Peter’s Square in 2013. In his homily that day, the Holy Father encour-aged everyone to care for each other as Joseph cared for Mary and Jesus. FEAST OF SAINT PATRICK No matter what our ancestry may be, on March 17 we all become Irish to celebrate the life of Saint Patrick, one of the most popular of all our saints. He was a 5th-century missionary who converted Ireland and, through Ireland, saved much of Western civilization. Saint Patrick is a role model for evangelization and should inspire us in the re-evangelization of our own culture, making the light of Christ shine anew in a world where He has too often been forgotten. DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET During Lent, members of the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy in the parish are leading a public recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet immediately after the 12:10 p.m. weekday Mass in the Basilica. Please join us!

Q: Why don’t we eat meat on Fridays during Lent? A: Why Friday? Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross on a Friday, so from the very beginning Christians have set aside Friday to unite their sufferings to His so they also may one day be glorified with Him. In fact, the Church recognizes every Friday as a “Good Friday” so we can remember and personally experience Christ’s passion by offering up a specific penance. (We also fast from meat on Ash Wednesday as we begin the penitential season of Lent.) Why meat? In most ancient cultures, meat was deemed a worthy sacrifice because it was con-sidered a delicacy and associated with feasts and celebrations. The “fattened calf” was slaugh-tered only when there was something special to commemorate. Since Friday is a day of pen-ance and mortification, avoiding meat that day is appropriate. The Latin word used to describe what kind of “meat” is not permitted on Fridays is carnis. It specifically relates to “animal flesh.” According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, that means abstinence from “land animals” – chickens, cows, sheep or pigs. Birds are also con-sidered meat. Fish, amphibians, reptiles (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are in another category and are permitted.

SPECIAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

A Mass for the Solemnity of Saint Joseph will be offered in the Basilica on

Friday, March 19, at 4 p.m. for our loved ones who have passed

away since March 17, 2020. Father David Dufresne will be the celebrant.

LENTEN EASTER EGG SERVICE PROJECT The Mother of Light Center (MOLC) in Alexandria hopes to fill about 7,000 plastic Easter eggs with individually wrapped candy and other fun items for its friends. CONFIRMATION CRASH COURSE The Basilica of Saint Mary’s

Adult Confirmation Crash Course is designed for adults (18-years-old and above)

who are practicing Catholics and have received other sacraments such as Confession

Participants meet once a week, for four weeks, with a priest to prepare for this beautiful sacrament.

In honor of the Year of Saint Joseph, the Basilica of Saint Mary is hosting a parish mission March 15 to 18 with Father Wade Menezes of the Fathers of Mercy, a missionary preaching religious order based in Auburn, KY. His mission theme will be Guardian of the Redeemer, Protect and Lead Us!

Father Wade will give the same talk in the Basilica during both the afternoon and evening sessions, so choose one session to attend daily. Additional confes-sion times with Father Wade are available on those days. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar during the evening sessions. The talks will be live streamed on our parish website. At the request of Father Wade, they will not be recorded for viewing after the session is over.

One Year of the Pandemic: A Time for Trust, Detachment and Abandonment

A new parish Podcast features a talk given March 1 by Alex Solsma at the Basilica of Saint Mary’s Theology on Tap, our monthly speaker series for young adults. His topic: One Year of the Pandemic: A Time for Trust, Detachment and Abandonment. This month marks the one-year anniversary of nation-wide shutdowns and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During his presentation, Solsma reflected on the spiritual themes he has felt invited and challenged to explore during this difficult time, including trust, de-tachment and abandonment. Solsma has served as Director of Communications and Evangelization at the Basilica of Saint Mary since 2018. Before coming to Old Town, he was a radio broadcast journalist, covering news and sports in Iowa and Wis-consin. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa and a native of Sioux City, IA.

PARISH MISSION 100 YEARS AGO! As we embark on our Saint Mary Parish Mission led by Fr. Wade Menezes this week,

we can look back 100 years at a parish mission held circa 1920, as described in the Alexandria Gazette:

“Last night Saint Mary’s Catholic Church was the scene of a beautiful and impressive ceremony, the renewal of the baptismal vows by the whole congrega-tion. Standing and with right hand uplifted they answered with strong and firm voice, the questions which are addressed to a candidate for baptism. This ceremony came as an appropriate conclusion to the services which have been going on in the church during the past week at which the people faithfully assist-ed and in large numbers received the sacrament of penance and holy Eucharist. “Father Doyle preached an eloquent sermon on the church into which we are initiated by baptism. Many non-Catholics attended the service and were much

interested in the sermon and the ceremony. The service every evening during this week will be for the special bene-fit of non-Catholics who may wish to hear a plain and thorough explanation of Catholic belief. “Many erroneous opinions regarding the Catholic Church will be corrected and a clear statement of her true posi-tion on most vital questions will be given. A question box is placed near the church door to receive the written queries of persons seeking information on religious topics. Many questions were asked by Catholics during their week of mission, and now non-Catholics are especially invited to patronize the question box. The answering of questions each evening at the beginning of the service at 8 o’clock is a most interesting and instructive feature of the missions. A cordial invitation is extended by the missionaries as well as the pastor to all non-Catholics to come and hear the lectures. Father Handley, O.S.P., of the Apostolic Mission House will preach this evening and Father Waters of Virginia, will answer the questions.”

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST The Basilica’s Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Kavanaugh #54, will host a screening of the movie The Passion of the Christ on Friday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in our Lyceum Auditorium. The film chronicles the final hours of Christ’s life. All are invited to attend, but please note that the film is rated R for sequences of graphic vio-lence. Attendance is limited to 35 people due to social distancing requirements, so pre-registration is required.
