INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY

Jesus is the model of love and obedience. It can be difficult to be obedient. Temptations, deceptions and lack of will can contribute to our failures.

When we focus on what love asks us to do, however, we can overcome the obstacles to our desired choices and behaviors. Jesus serves as the model of love and obedience, and relying on him in prayer gives us strength to make the right choices. Genesis recalls the first sin committed by humankind: disobedience to God. The second reading from Romans explains how Christ came to counter that sin of disobedience with his perfect obedience. In the Gospel, Jesus remains perfectly faithful to his Father as he resists the temptations put to him by the devil in the desert.

It begins with ashes. The mark of the penitent. A public sign that we are about to embark on a

conversion of heart. It arrives quickly, nipping at the heels of the joyous promise of the Christmas

season. It arrives so very quickly that it nearly comes as a shock. A painful reminder that in our joy

we have strayed. A startling reminder that our lives, too, will pass quickly. So quickly that when the

number of days He has granted us have been expended, perhaps that, too, will come as a shock.

Lent. A time to turn to God. To repent. To prepare. Lent. Don't waste it.

Jesus, who remained true in spite of temptation, gives us the strength to do the same. We all

know it can be difficult at times to resist temptation. So many things require our time and

attention. And so many more things call to us with the voice of persuasion: promising to make

life less painful, less onerous or less costly. The struggle to make the right choices can be

difficult. Adam and Eve faltered. Given everything in the Garden of Eden, they were tempted

with the possibility of more, and so they committed the first sin of pride, which was

disobedience. They gave in to the temptation before them and set the course of Creation on a

new trajectory. They sacrificed the permanent and eternal unity with God on the altar of the

immediate possibility – false as it was – of being and having more. But Paul tells us today

that though sin entered the world and death came to all, God did not withhold his grace from

us and sent his only Son into the world to redeem us. Jesus countered that first sin of

disobedience with an act of perfect obedience – an obedience that would resist every temptation throughout the whole of his

earthly life. We all face our own deserts with their unique temptations. We find it difficult to obey our conscience and our own

moral compasses. But here’s the thing: we are not fated to disobedience. We have a choice, and we have a model in Jesus and an

advocate in the Holy Spirit. In as much as we share in the life of Christ – through the sacrament of baptism – we can refuse to let

our love be clouded by the empty promises of the devil. But we cannot do it alone. We need to rely on prayer; on the sacraments;

on the charitable interactions and shared faith of friends and family; on our relationship with a triune God who loves us; and,

ultimately, on the grace of our God. In the desert, Jesus prayed. He drew on his faith, and on the Scriptures. And he sent the

devil away. So let us look to Jesus and ask him for help. And be confident that he’ll show us the way.

ARCHBISHOP RICHARD SMITH MESSAGE FOR LENT 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we enter the holy season of Lent, I make a simple yet challenging request: spend time with the Word

of God. In our considerations of what we shall "give up" during these forty days, let us also determine

to "take up" the Bible and thus seek to be taught, nourished and challenged by God's sacred

teachings. He offers us his Word as a gift of love. Together with the grace He pours out in the

sacraments, His Word shapes, guides and transforms our lives along our pilgrim journey toward the

eternal life God wills for each of us. May we never tire of approaching the Word of God; it is an

inexhaustible font of wisdom and hope. Perhaps some time to read and pray with the Bible could be

created by the sacrifice of a favourite television program or other pastime. To anyone unaccustomed to

reading Sacred Scripture, a simple way to begin would be to concentrate on the Gospel passage

assigned for the mass of the day. Ponder even one line that catches your attention, and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten your

understanding of God's will for you that day. How might God's Word be calling me to love more deeply, or to make a small sacrifice

of myself for the sake of another person? I also ask that you consider ways to study the Bible with others, maybe through a Bible

study with family members or fellow parishioners. Perhaps you could begin, individually or as a family, to pray with Scripture

through the weekly mealtime prayers offered by the Archdiocese. Lent is a wonderful occasion of grace, a blessed time in which

each of us is summoned to a careful examination of conscience in the light of God's Word. As we open with reverence the sacred

page and ponder in humility its teachings, may we be led by God's love and mercy to the change of heart he seeks from us.

Yours sincerely in Christ,

+ Richard W. Smith - Archbishop of Edmonton
