Paddy Michaelson - Member Behind the Badge

In his “Man behind the badge” talk Paddy started with an account of his early childhood in the Isle of Wight in Britain during the Second World War. This included references to rationing – which many people do not realise went on for many years after the War. It even included whale-meat “Snook” as part of the meat ration. There were also description of Air-raid shelters at home and at school. When visiting his grandmother it was simply “Under the stairs”. He also spoke of Sandown Pier being cut in half and having to climb over the anti- invasion defences at the beach in summer. After the War his mother re-married and the family went to Jersey where he had his secondary education on a scholarship at Victoria College. At the age of sixteen he applied for a cadetship with what, even for those days (1955), was the archaically named British India Steam Navigation Company. His interview (during which he was told that anyone intelligent in the ship only embarrassed everyone else) was in Southampton aboard the m.v. DUNERA - famous - or infamous - as the ship which brought the”Dunera Boys” to Australia. Despite being seasick all the way back to Jersey it was the start of almost exactly 51 years at sea. His indentures were in a format handed down for generations. In return for satisfactory conduct (which included NOT frequenting taverns or alehouses nor playing at unlawful games) he was to be taught the art and mystery of the mariner and “the business of an officer” in the Company’s steamships. Life for a first-tripper was not easy - but one was expected to cope with it. On 9th June 1956, still aged sixteen he arrived in Sydney 22 days out of Aden. It was the start of a life-long association and citizenship in Australia. When he passed his first Professional exams in 1959. He was flown to India and immediate culture shock - a deck passenger ship on the Bombay - Persian Gulf. He was the newest and most junior officer in the Company. The Persian Gulf was just as wild and woolly then but not so high-tech. The next few years were full of gathering experience and learning .It was particularly interesting in that for ten years he sailed with Indian crews and had to learn a not very pure form of Hindi. Experiences included playing cricket against the Basra pilots on a concrete field (not just the pitch) and losing - watching a middle aged man travelling North every two or three months and learning that on each occasion he was selling his new wife - burying at sea those who went on the Haj and didn’t make it through the Persian Gulf summer - attending the Nautical and Engineering College in Bombay where there were two Europeans in a student body of 498 - being thrown out of China in 1963 - and promotion to 2nd Officer in a ship where they navigated their way round the world with much the same equipment as Captain Cook.

In 1966 after ten years at sea he joined ANL. He left 32 years later as Senior Master. His original intention was to become a Port Phillip Sea Pilot but as the Line expanded overseas he was able to continue his seafaring and gain his Pilotage Exemptions which enabled him to enjoy both simultaneously. 1966 was a good time to join ANL as they got under way with a programme for modern tonnage and route expansion. Some things needed attention however. They recruited largely from officers of the main British companies who settled in Australia. In 1969, after trying to introduce a training format, he received a letter from Head Office thanking him for his efforts but stating that they were not conditioned to investment in training as they were used to having a supply of qualified and experienced officers on tap. He considers that containerisation put paid to that. One containership in 36 hours handled as much cargo as 5 ships together had each handled - each of which might have a week in port - there was not the social exposure leading to Anglo - Australian marriages. Prior to containerisation what is now the much criticised area known as Docklands was Victoria Dock with 26 berths. These berths were always full with at least half a dozen ships anchored off Williamstown awaiting a berth. The Melbourne Harbour Trust, from its grand HQ in Market Street, oversaw a community that had its own fire service, its own ambulances and medical services. At the heart of this were 10,000 wharfies who made their living from it - their income according to some unkind souls, “Ten quid a week and half the cargo”. After getting his first command he worked his way through the fleet, including three years based on the Pilbara taking iron ore to Japan in what was then Australia’s largest ship. It was while on this service that he saw a few holes punched in the Japanese reputation for super-efficiency in industry. In 1978 Australia’s first female cadet was appointed to Paddy’s. ship. There was a bit of a tizz to start with but she was soon accepted and went on to get her command before going into Queensland Pilotage. Since then women have taken other shipboard roles at all levels. continued page 12

Chairman Max Martin welcomed President Dale Hoy to the rostrum. Dale welcomed everyone and especially former Swiss exchange student Christoph Hagenbuch who was revisiting the club after 14 years. Dale then introduced his front table comprising‘Member Behind the Badge’ speaker Paddy Michaelson, Chairman Max Martin, Acting Secretary Brendan Kierce and Sergeant Damien Hellard. Damien had been in hospital the previous Monday for a thyroid operation and had rebounded strongly and it was great to see him at the meeting. Dale said we had approx 220-230 people at the Peta Credlin night the previous week and the feedback from people who attended was extremely positive. Dale said that on the back of last week Peta had agreed to do a short video on Rotary Student Exchange Program for the upcoming District Conference. Peta herself was a former Rotary Exchange Student to the USA in 1987. She also agreed to help Kerry Kornhauser through the Trachoma Program.

Clyde White - Winery Trip. Clyde spoke to us about thin trip on 21 May to St Helen’s Winery in Yarra Valley. He asked us if we had a preference with the meals - Entree and Main or Main and Dessert and the first option was adopted. For more

details see advert page 7 of this Bulletin.

PP Julian Goglia - Club Bowls Day. Julian spoke about this Sunday 26 February event and said the was one bowling spot available. He looked forward to seeing us all there.

Jodi Mills - Aviation disaster at Essendon airport. Jodi asked us to give a thought for the wives of the 5 men killed in the plane crash last week at Essendon Airport. She said and she and husband Ian have had a close connection with the aviation industry and really

felt the loss.

Pres Dale - Christoph Hagenbuch. Dale introduced Christoph and he spoke to us about his life since we had last seen him back in 2002. Christoph was disappointed that no one had taken him up on his offer of accommodation in his house during the 14 years. When he returned to Switzerland he had to finish year 12 and then he had to do military service. After that he went to the Swiss institute of Technology and studied

PP David Efron - Jack Joel. David said that Jack was still unable to get out of bed and asked to give his apologies for not being at the meeting. David said that he was now on the road to recovery and hopes to return soon.

Pres Dale - Meeting 1 March at Royal Brighton Yacht Club. Dale reminded us that the next meeting would be with the Rotary Club of North Brighton and would feature a talk from Gemma Sisia and Winrose of School of St. Judes, Tanzania. He hoped as many members as possible could be there.

PP Chris Tuck - Night of Stars. This event moved to Thursday 20 April was a very important fundraiser for the club and Chris said he wanted us all to support this event. He is in charge of getting Auction prizes and he requested that if anyone had an idea for a prize they contact him. In his year they came up with

the Les Twentyman tour of the ‘Badlands’ of Melbourne in the Western Suburbs which raised a lot of funds for the club.

Trachoma is an eye disease that is prevalent in the indigenous community. This is being backed by Rotary District and is Australia wide. Peta said she really enjoyed our meeting last week. On other news Dale said that PP Bill Howley was recovering in hospital after a quadruple bypass operation and has resigned his Treasurer position immediately. He is now in the recovery stage and we look forward to seeing him back amongst us soon. Also Ian Banks’ wife Sandra said that Ian had been admitted to hospital again and we wish him a speedy recovery. Dale then thanked PP Ian Mence for his hard work in procuring Peta Credlin to speak at our club. Ian has also informed Dale that Opposition Leader Matthew Guy will be speaking to us on 18 May and Stephen Conroy 1 June. They will be followed by Supreme Court Judge Betty King on 9 June.

IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

What an exquisite day for a walk on a golf course. Under the stand-in captaincy of Ron Stark, the game started as expected - with a balls-up. That gave us two teams of three and four players.

Our occasional Pre-Game Chipping Competition was easily won by Sven-Erik, a feat that exhausted him of every further chance to excel for the entire round. Sven was relegated to equal seventh place, joined by Ron Stark.

Arthur Hubbard easily won the Water Award. Not that he actually went in the water. Lake Arthur had been almost completely drained, exposing approximately 176 balls in the mud. Arthur managed to retrieve approximately 48 of his own balls before we alerted him to the fact that he was holding up the game. Well, he said they were his balls.

The Gong Award was completely redefined. Arthur Hubbard took an heroic swing, whereupon his ball hit the stay with a sound that’s seldom heard outside of Thailand. Notably, though, it was already his second shot. His ball richoched off the stay, hit a tree squarely and bounced back to where it started. Arthur’s third attempt to hit the upright failed, at which point, using his fairway wood, he proceeded to putt his way up the 12th fairway.

After Arthur’s only redeeming par, Sven-Erik unselfishly suggested a new local rule. Following a par by any player, the others in the group are entitled to hit off the following ladies tee. The idea was enthusiastically embraced by the others in Sven’s group. Whether from embarrassment or from the fact that pars were so scarce is undisclosed. Suffice it to say that the ladies tees were unsullied that day.

Jim Moore hung around after the game. And hung around. And hung around, long after the biscuits had run out and the coffee cups discarded. The nameless presenter of prizes was finally reminded that Jim had actually taken out the longest drive prize. And a well-deserved, if belatedly given, prize it was, too.

Award winners were: Sven-Erik: Pre-game chipping competition, David Bodycoat: NTP, Handicap and Cole-Vojlay trophy, Jim Moore: Longest Drive.

James Tisdall: Longest drive on the not-longest-drive fairway award. Note - this is occasionally handed out to allay depression and disappointment, as an alternative to the Biggest Game Collapse award. Don’t forget that our March 4 game will be at Elsternwick, where four tee-off times have been reserved, starting at 8:08 am. Ron Stark

HACKERS WEEKEND AWAY AT CAPE SCHANCK

In his Last 15 years with ANL most of his time was spent in containerships on the Australia-NZ-EAST coast USA run and on the Northern European service. From 1986 onward the latter run was via Cape Horn and Drake Passage. Some bright bunny had worked out that enroute to Northern Europe, the distance was only a day and a half’s steaming more than via Panama and with the delays there (plus the fees) it made sense to take the longer route. The run (occasionally West) about if they had cargo for Med ports was not without its incidents. These included (on two occasions) having a 40ft whale wrapped round the bow, and having to go astern to get it off; being chased by an Argentinian gun-boat off Cape Horn; meeting the ice field North of the Falklands; going into Jeddah in Saudi Arabia with a leaking 20 tonne bladder of wine; being given the once over every time they passed E of the Falklands by British Forces - and a dozen others. An observational note - many years ago it was possible to see Mt Sinai to the East when approaching or departing from Suez. Towards the end of his time with ANL Paddy notes that fumes from oil rigs often interfered with this. It was not unknown to meet rafts of plastic bags between NZ and the Horn. The council does not run a Tuesday morning collection in mid-ocean. Paddy left ANL in 1997, the year before they were sold to the French.
