Man Behind the Badgel When Sound came in in the 30’s the speed was too

slow and it was increased to 24 frames per second, fast enough to handle the sound and yet not too fast to waste the costly film. We have been that way for the last 80 years.

l Then along came Digital when Texas Instruments, a US company finally got the quality to be better than film with 2000 line resolution (HD TV 1080).

l Cinemas started experimenting with Digital about 5 years ago and during that time quality has improved more and more and prices are getting less.

l It is going to cost each cinema screen about $100,000 to install a single digital projector and say take Southland with 15 screens there goes $1.5m

l I am on the film industry board which has been dealing with the financial aspects of the problem for the past 4 years, the parties saving the big money are the Hollywood studios who currently pay about $2000.00 each time they deliver 35mm film to a cinema. Now it will cost them with Digital about $50.00 and soon it will be cheaper via satellite.

l Our Industry body has negotiated with the 6 Major Hollywood studios to pay around 75% of that cost, removing a massive burden from the cinema owners.

l A Digital file contains one film is about 300 megabytes.

l Now with 3D it Jumps to 600 megabytes. l Famous filmmaker Peter Jackson in 6 months time

will be releasing the HOBBITT in 3D at 48 Frames per second, a file of 1.2 terabytes. Where does it stop? Steven Spielberg is now doing a new movie at 66 Frames per second amazing quality.

l Now comes a bigger expense with 3D Sound and I’m now equipping the first cinema in Australia with this system of 3D Sound, an extra 25,000 watts, extra 42 speakers and a cost of $100,000 plus...the result is AWESOME.

What’s Hollywood doing about it l New Movies that are really looking great. Last week “THE AVENGERS” broke all records, over $40m in less than two weeks in Australia.

l To look forward to - Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows”l Sacha Barren Cohen in a laugh a minute “The

DICTATOR”.l The most awaited film Ridley Scotts “Prometheus”.l Not to be outdone Christopher Nolan brings bursting

out of the digital screens “The Dark Knight Rises, Batmans Back”.

l And Batman not to be outdone has his mate following in “The Amazing Spiderman”.

l Disney and Pixar have for the Families “BRAVE” a film about the Scottish Highlanders.

Robert Wardl Cinema Industry has

been alive and well for over 115 years.

l Lumiere Brothers invented the Camera and Projector in Paris.

l Along with others they came up with 35mm film which was decided to be the industry standard over 9mm and 16mm.

l It ran at 16 frames per second and that’s why it was called the Flickers or the Flicks.

l And if you want a real laugh don’t miss Mark Wahlberg in “TED”.

l There’s also ”MIB3” and Oliver Stones “SAVAGES”.l Baz Lurhman brings to life “THE GREAT GATSBY”. l And for the end of the year two amazing films which

I had the opportunity to view section Ang Lees “THE LIFE OF PI” and Peter Jacksons “THE HOBBITT” in HFR3D and for those that love the Theatre Hugh Jackman and “Les Miserables”.

Roger Fairlam

Roger was one of two members who agreed to give brief ‘Behind the Badge’ presentations following the unfortunate illness of guest speaker, John Moncrieff.

Roger spoke of his life in England before he migrated to Australia many years ago. A ‘Jordi’, having been born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Roger grew up in London. He hated school and left at the age of sixteen. Subsequently, he became and articled accountant and qualified through attending night school, as did many of his contemporaries. Roger was a keen sportsman and heavily involved in the sport of rowing.

He met his wife, Sue, on a blind date in England and later married her in Australia. Sue had travelled to England on the ‘Fairstar’ but arrived with two broken ankles after a severe fall on board ship during the voyage to England.

As well as working in accounting and auditing, Roger worked in the steel industry and later in building supplies and in property maintenance. He has also been secretary of a small publically listed company. Roger is once again working as an accountant and developing a new business in Brighton.

Roger and Sue have four children, two of whom are married and three grandchildren.

A Health Message fromTony RouseAt the end of the ‘Behind the Badge’ presentations from Roger Fairlam and PP Robert Ward, Tony Rouse delivered a health message to all Members.

Tony, a diabetic since around 1990 spoke of life with diabetes which, he says, affects more Australians than cancer, stroke and heart disease combined. He spoke of the changes observed by others in his personality and moods which led to their ‘encouraging’ him to have tests which resulted in his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes. Since then he had to ‘self-inject’ four times a day to control his insulin levels.

Tony says it is now fifteen years since he has tasted an ice cream and ten years since he has had a beer.

He encouraged all Members to have the blood tests that check for and diagnose diabetes.

IVAN’S HACKERS

Gents, Mark Trafford is away at a conference but will be back for Tony Hawkins farewell lunch at the New Bay Hotel from 12.30 next Saturday. All Hackers are invited and expected to attend to give Tony a good send off. We will also present David Kearns with his Venus Trophy (won last week) and David and Ian Cole with the Bruce Crossley inspired Venus Trophies which they keep. Saturday turned out to be Cameron Spence’s special appearance scoring a magical 37, with 6 pars. He, as we will all agree, is a model of consistency and just keeps on getting better. David Lee is also a big mover with a 43 including 2 Pars. We had a total of four groups playing, where the other scores were, Sven Eric 48, Graeme Wallace 48 (1 Par), Tony Hawkins 49 (1 Par), Daryl Forge 49 (1 Par), Ken Gallaher 51 (1 Par), Oswin Slade 52 (1 Par), Jim Donnelly 52. Paul Nicholson 54 (1 Par) Ivan Vojlay 55. Ron Stark 59, Peter Whitechurch 57, Ron Stark 59.Peter Whitechurch was happy with his improving form following his coaching classes, and no doubt we will expect that from Daryl Forge who was seen to go off for private lessons with head golf Coach Trevor Harrison, after the game. CHILDRENTOYS FOR

Taking gifts for children on overseas trips is challenging. Donations In Kind have received six pallets of toys that are perfect for this purpose. They are small lightweight bundles of joy that are ideal to carry on a plane.

These photos are from a trip that the Essendon Rotary Club made to Burma and highlight the pleasure that these gifts provide.

If a Club is planning a trip reserve some now. Or if a Club is looking for a great value for money project $20 will send 1-200 toys to an orphanage.

The Pursuit of Excellence

DG’s Weekly Message: From Networker 36 Building the Ideal Club In Rotary, every Club is different. There is no “ideal” Club model, but we know that successful Clubs share some things in common. So if we were to build an “ideal” Club or be bold enough to look at our own Club and say “let’s make this great”, where would we start? Let’s take a look. A Starting Point Some might think that members would be the first place you start. Let’s get lots and lots of members. But the truth is, you could start with hundreds of members, but unless you engage them and give them some sort of feeling that what they are doing is worthwhile, you would quickly lose them. A Club with even a few members can quickly grow if it has purpose and passion. These are the two ingredients any Club must find if it wishes to meet its potential. Unleashing Passion A Club that has purpose and passion has a message, a vibe, an image, a culture and a climate straight away that it can convey to the outside world. It says “we LOVE doing THIS” and immediately positions the Club as the place to be if others love doing THIS as well. Ask people anywhere about what sort of people they like to meet and they will often tell you “people who are passionate” - they are inspired by them. The same goes for organisations - people are more attracted to organisations that are passionate and inspire the same in them. The secret for every Club is to ensure your Club’s passions aren’t locked away only to be seen once a year during a momentary project and to ensure that those inspired by your passion are able to develop and pursue their own passions when they join your Club. There is no better way to increase passion in your Club than to help those with fresh inspiration to pursue something they are passionate about. Make it a priority to launch the dreams of your new members and you will likely soon see not just more new members, but more inspired and passionate long-term members. Convey A Purpose What is the point of your Club? If you can’t answer this question in a simple sentence or two, let alone a word or two, then you’ve probably lost the attention of those on the outside. Whether it’s stating that your Club “is the most efficient and effective way to give back”, that “giving has never been this much fun!”, or that you provide “A close network of people who help each other make the world a better place”, your purpose should be a clear reason why others would want to be part of your Club. Show Your Most Attractive Side Think of any advertisement you’ve recently read, watched on T.V., heard on the radio or have seen out and about. Marketeers have worked hard to bring you information wrapped in an attractive packaging with a clear call to action. They convince you that a simple formula exists: You + The Product = Ideal You. And they’re smart about it – they pitch the message to the target audience they wish to attract using attractive models that their target audience can relate to or wish to emulate. In advertising Rotary, we need to be doing the same – use attractive depictions of our “product” to attract our target audience. We won’t capture an idealistic and community minded 27-year old female who has a passion for ending polio by showing her pictures of someone she cannot relate to who is depicted doing things that don’t inspire her. Think about where you are depicting this image too - it’s not just your website, but your public projects, club meetings, brochures and introductory material, social media and everything else you do. If it ain’t attractive, it ain’t ideal. Always ask, is there a better alternative? If nothing else, remember that big warm smiles, happiness and a welcoming attitude are things that everyone can relate to, are attractive and are products that most people would love to possess themselves. Include them in everything! Don’t Forget a Call to Action Don’t forget to ask people to come and visit, to share their dreams with you, to volunteer alongside Rotary in your projects, to take part in your initiatives, to come and speak at your Club, to “like” your Club on Facebook and subscribe to your news feeds or to simply join your Club. It All Adds Up to a Simple Formula Decide what you want to be great at. Be passionate about being great at it. Do great things and do them often. Show great people the great things you do and invite them (in great ways!) to do great things too. ...and that’s the simple formula to an ideal Club.
