Thinking of Cruising?Contact the “Cruise Wizards’.

Receive Qantas Frequent Flyer points for eachdollar spent on most cruises.

I am a storyteller who comes from an oral culture and our elders imparted their knowledge through oral storytelling. I therefore adamantly believe that stories have the power to transform our lives. I also believe it to be both a privilege and a duty to share our stories because when we do, we educate and empower each other.

There is a great wealth of stories within all of us that comes from our daily experiences, from the triumphs over our adversities and from the joys of our daily lives and when we share these stories we create not only a resilient and adaptable community but also a peaceful global world.

I came to Australia as a refugee from my war-torn country Somalia with four children, my husband and pregnant with my fifth child. Prior to this I had no experience of the Western culture and I was settled in Brighton, the whitest and wealthiest suburb in the South East. As a black family and refugees who had nothing you can imagine our turmoil! It was really difficult in the beginning and I sometimes thought that it was worse than the war back home, at least then we were dealing with something familiar and we were emotionally okay. My family and I did not really think we belonged in this community so we always went to the places where more of our ethnical communities resided and found solace in those faraway places. We realised in no time that this was not sustainable.

My pivotal moment of change came when my daughter Sarah who was born in the heart of this community reached the age of kinder. As I was naïve in the culture around me I went in search for Kinder for my little girl and expected to find one straight away. The first kinder we walked into received us with a cold reception and informed us that we had to go through a waiting list. I detected the coldness in the atmosphere but I was shocked when my four year old remarked later “Mum did they not want me because I’m black”. From then on I decided to understand this community, especially if I needed my children to grow and be the amazing people I knew they had the potential to be.

I started volunteering in community centres and worked in Brighton homes (to observe the Australian woman in her natural habitat) and I also worked in Age care centres. I’ve to say that my observations and what I learned through this journey has prepared me for the person I’m today.

I’m a passionate community worker who understands now that no two people live in the same reality, but I’ve realised that we can visit one another in our realities with compassion and I don’t mean compassion of sympathy or even empathy but compassion with true love. When we stop managing each other and start sharing our stories and resources is when we can make a difference in each other’s lives.

Our not for profit organisation RAW - Resilient Aspiring Women, is an initiative of sharing our compassion and resources to create a Resilient and Aspiring Community. With this project we invite all community members to take part. (When Ron Stark introduced us as Resourceful Aspiring Women, he was spot on) I’m truly privileged and honoured by your invitation to share my story with you!

I’ll leave you with the African Proverb: “It takes a whole village to raise a child”.

SERGEANT’S SESSION

* Name the film: In 1967, with the backdrop

of the American Civil rights movement in full swing, a film starring Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracey, Sidney Poitier and the

little known Katharine Houghton was released. Who can name that film? Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was correct however some were fined $1

for being too enthusiastic. The film was notable and ground breaking on many fronts, namely the introduction of the then rather touchy subject of interracial marriage, and the brave questioning of many stereotypes and preconceptions. Remember how shocked the parents were on seeing a dashing Sidney Poitier standing in their doorway. Like many parents they ended up warming to him once they discovered he was a Doctor;

* Collingwood supporters: Of course, with the exception of Collingwood supporters (and Collingwood Presidents) we have certainly come a long way since then in terms of racial tolerance. $1 fine to all Pies supporters;

* Anyone not going to Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner: This was the last film Spencer Tracey ever made as he died 17 days after its completion and it is the basis for Brighton Rotary’s annual “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” event. The Rotarian who dreamt up that name did a great job, because, just once a year this is everyone’s chance to step out of your comfort zone, learn a little more about the lives of fellow members and their wives, and enrich your Rotary experience. $1 for anyone not going to GWCTD. Next year let’s try to get at least double the participants as it is a very important event in our Rotary Calender.

* Sgt Chris: Had to fine himself because he thought the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was the weekend before;

* Brendan Kierce, Roger Fairlam and Bill Howley: At the Brighton Lunch held last Friday at the International Brendan, Roger and Bill were doing the back office for the event. They left the office for a very short time and three beautiful young ladies who were volunteers for the event polished off all their lunches! That will teach you to get side tracked! $1 from each was requested;

* Graham Gude: He was spotted having lunch with a very nice lady many years his junior on the waterfront down in Geelong last week. Sergeant didn’t fine him as getting across the Westgate Bridge and being in Geelong was punishment enough.

* PP Julian Goglia: He is heading over to Europe on a sailing holiday. $1 euro was requested so by the time he gets there that’ll be around $2;* Keith Cameron, Barry Hickman, Mac Chapman: All heading off

overseas soon so asked to pay up too; * Anyone else heading overseas: Anyone else planning on jumping on

a plane overseas in the next month or two? Pay a dollar fine plus an extra $1 for not booking through Bayview Travel;

* Tony Rouse: For wearing a 20 year old Jacket from Diamaru;* Ron Stark: He had trouble starting his car the other day and tried in

vain for about an hour until he relented and called the RACV. The spotty adolescent jumped in the driver seat and gently advised him an automatic car cannot be started with the gearshift in “Drive” ;

* Jim Donnelly: For not only coming in late but also proudly wearing another Rotarians name badge.

PRESIDENT’S REPORTPresented by President Peter Sherman

Graeme Watson: Graeme said that they had 52 people coming to the ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ and 6 hosts so it should be a great night. Meeting times were announced and he looked forward to seeing everyone at Milanos.

Mike Rundle: Changeover is coming and invitations have been sent out. Please let Mike know if you are coming.

David Smyth: Club should be proud to be supporting work in the area of Family Violence. The Club has donated $20.000 to Family Free Violence and David said he will formerly thank the Club when he receives the money.

SECRETARY’S ANNOUNCEMENTSPresented by Acting Secretary Stuart McIntyre

President Peter welcomed all Members and guests.

Peter particularly welcomed our guest speaker last week, Miriam Issa who was to tell us her story on migrating to Australia as a refugee and leading a very successful and happy life. A true story of the commitment of

the human spirit to overcome adversity. The Bulletin tells the background better of Mariam’s journey in some detail so I commend you all to read it before Mariam speaks.

It was a pure coincidence that the previous week we had one of the foremost academics speak to us on Immigration to Australia and the issue of Refugees in Professor Andrew Markus and with Mariam we had a real life story.

Last week had been very exciting for Peter. It started with a wonderful Brighton Lunch at the International the previous Friday. It was brilliantly organised by Geoff Bentley and we raised approximately $42,000. This compared with $32,000 which we raised last year. This will prove to be a great event in our Rotary Fund Raising Calendar into the future. A great credit to Geoff Bentley for his outstanding organising ability. Music was provided by the Chantoozies with the beautiful Tottie Goldsmith who was also our MC. Cathy Freeman was interviewed by her friend Tiffany Cherry and Cathy gave a wonderful talk on her experiences both as a famous Australian athlete and as an ambassador for the indigenous people at Palm Island. This event was held in conjunction with the Cathy Freeman Foundation and 50% of the Funds will go to Cathy’s Foundation which will be used to better the education of the children of Palm Island. Her involvement in this Event is a personal pleasure to Peter as Cathy is a great friend of his son. This amount exceeded our fund raising budget and we will now be able to expend the maximum amount that our Board allocated. This will be talked about at our Club Night. The rest of the week consisted of Peter travelling to Hong Kong on Sunday on Business and he returned the night before the meeting. He still managed a game of Golf while he was there. Business of course.

The downer was having to watch Collingwood get thrashed the previous Friday Night. Oh well that is Sport.

Ô Taking people out of isolation and making them part of something,Õ

speaker Mariam Issa explaining her work with RAW

Ô It was like cleaning beautiful castles with nobody in them,Õ

speaker Mariam Issa telling us about her first job cleaning Brighton houses.

Quotes of the week!Quotes of the week! As heard during the meeting 30 May:

PUB SIGNKaterina spoke to us about Mariam IssaKaterina Kons met Mariam Issa at a parent’s night. Mariam’s presence and self confidence in the room amazed her as she was a shy person herself. She got to know Mariam and heard all about her organisation for Resilient Aspiring Women - RAW. She also spoke about Mariam’s garden which brings together women of all backgrounds and share a have cup of coffee and tell their stories. This was something Mariam had experienced in her early life in Somalia. There people knew who their neighbours were for hundreds of miles.

APOLOGY: In last week’s Bulletin the item on the Pantry Dinner was incorrectly reported. PP Des Thomas has forwarded the following: “The ARH friends have raised/contributed over $150,000. The Pantry dinners/auctions over 14 years have been the medium for members contributions of over $110,000. Those members have added another $40,000 in personal donations to take the total to the $150,000 +.”

AFL FOOTY TIPPING

2013Round 10 Wrap Up: As we entered into the final game of round 10 we still had four tippers staring down the perfect 9. They were feeling pretty good about themselves but …………..if only the Eagles had won! Instead they had their wings clipped by the roaring Tigers.Susan holds on to top spot again with a very credible 7 but she must be feeling the hot breathe of some very competitive tippers breathing down her neck! It is starting to bunch up at the top but with the odd surprise still happening each week the competition remains very much up for grabs.

No report as no golf was played. It was a dark, wet and windy morning at Royal Brighton golf course on Saturday 1 June, 2013. What few cars were in the car park slowly drove off into the darkness and then I saw a black Mercedes pull up. Out popped one Ivan Vojlay who was already talking to the one other person in the car park - a young Irish man who was advising this was his first golf pass in 3 months as he has a wife and three young children and rarely gets to play golf. I said hello to Ivan and we both confirmed that neither of us had in fact brought along our clubs and so we go in for a coffee. Word comes that the course is in fact open and the Irish guy and few other madmen line up to pay for their golf. Ivan and I continue to sit drinking coffee when hello, in walks Cameron Spence, clubs and buggy outside and wearing his wet weather gear. In the end no Hackers played on Saturday as it was too wet. Ivan and I went home. Cameron drove down to National for a round.
