Rotary Serving HumanityOur founder, Paul Harris believed that serving humanity is the most worthwhile thing any one of us can do with our lives. And that is how RI President John Germ developed the theme for 2016-17 - ‘Rotary Serving Humanity’. This theme is a perfect backdrop for us to showcase what we do in our communities and the wider world to help make them a better place.

As I travel around our clubs to see and hear the amazing work we do, I believe John Germ is correct, that we see the opportunity to serve for what it truly is. Not a small opportunity, but a great one. You might think that those opportunities are small, or that what you do doesn’t matter. But they’re not small and everything you do matters, especially to the people we help.

We must remember that as we embrace this opportunity we can only do what we can, when we can, with whatever time we have. You don’t need a lot of time to be a Rotarian, just the right heart.

THINGS DON’T JUST HAPPEN - PLAN BUT THEN DO!The objective this year is simple - for each club to be stronger on 1 July 2017 than they were on 1 July 2016.

We do this by working together, focussing on the actions that sit within three strategic pillars that have been our focus for more than two years. They are:• Strengthen the club. (Member development & retention)• Focus on & Increase humanitarian service work. a privilege• Public awareness. Promote what we do

In essence, if we have vibrant, active clubs that engage people with interesting projects and we actively promote what we do to our local communities, new members will come and existing ones will stay.

Not Doing it alone DLT It’s important that we know that what we do is no small thing, and we’re not doing it alone. District 9800 has a dedicated group of experienced Rotarians doing what they can to support every club in our District.• The Board - ensures good governance like any corporate board.• District Committee Chairs - includes avenues of service, learning &

development, public image and membership development.• Assistant Governors - Support the Presidents, clubs and are liaison with

all of the above, and helps develop cluster collaboration.

District Plans are aligned to support clubsD9800 has developed plans that are aimed at supporting clubs, including:• Continuing to support clubs in their membership campaigns. Being

invited to be a member of Rotary is an honour. It is the responsibility of every member to identify someone they know and ask them to attend an event or meeting. Just Ask!

• Conduct three Rotary showcase events to the public during the year that shows and tells the community what we do. (Bendigo, Echuca, Melbourne)

• To provide support to clubs in editing their stories for publication locally and beyond.

• To encourage Clusters to engage with the Rotary family comprising Rotaract, Interact and Earlylact clubs. This is an investment in the future and an opportunity to engage with their parents as potential Rotarians.

• To encourage and build partnerships with other stakeholders so we deliver better outcomes for our local communities. Business, Government, Non-Government and philanthropic organisations - these communities are all interested in the work of Rotary.

• Most importantly - to have fun doing it!

Promotion OpportunitiesThe following are important dates in the Rotary year that can be used as opportunities to promote what Rotary does:• The Rotary Foundation Centennial - All Year• Australian Rotary Health Hat Day - 7 October (supporting mental health

research) • End Polio Day - 24 October (plan an event)• Rotary’s Birthday - 23 February (plan an event)• Educational Vocational Training Team to Cambodia• Group Vocational Exchange with D3820 Philippines – Mid-February to

March 2017• District Conference - Shepparton 30 March – 1 April 2017

The Rotary Foundation Centennial - A One in a Hundred Year OpportunityThe creator of TRF, Arch Klumpf was quoted - “We should not live for ourselves alone, but for the joy in doing good for others.” This year we celebrate the centennial of TRF, the engine room that funds many wonderful local and global projects that change the lives of so many for the better. TRF enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. 100 years of ‘doing good in the world’ is a major milestone in the history of Rotary. TRF recently received a 4 star rating from the largest and most prestigious independent evaluator of non-profits in the United States, Charity Navigator, This recognizes sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust. continued page 10

Pres. Dale said that Barry had been up in Cambodia the last couple of weeks and said we would have a short video and speak to us about what happened during that two weeks. Barry said that last Thursday they received a documentary on their recent trip which was made by some students that we funded last year. The video showed some of the progress that had been made and Erik and Rithy have spent their time instructing the villagers and now they are able to maintain the filters themselves. Erik said the fantastic thing about the filters is that it only costs around $60AU in total to purchase all the materials involved to construct one of these filters. They have been asking the families who want a bio sand water filter to put in a very small $2.50AU to give them a great sense of ownership. The good thing about the villagers knowing how to construct and maintain the filters is that they have a great understanding of how it works. These filters will provide up to 25 years of clean drinking water and at the end of the day the villagers feel more empowered and feel like they are helping themselves. Erik said to date they have implemented around about 50 filters in these villages and there is still more to do. They currently have approximately about 770 families across the 3 villages and most of them don’t have access to clean drinking water. Erik finished by saying that the opportunity to help these inspiring people is right at our fingertips. After the video Barry said the film crew were Sammy Pearsons and Leon Rice who won a scholarship to make the film. Barry then spoke about the daily lives of the villagers and other improvements that had been made to their lives, the different crops that they now produce.

He praised Rithy for his wonderful work and Bronwyn Stephens for her driving force and of course Gerhard’s legacy. Barry said that what he had learnt out of the experience was what Rotary can do. During their time in Cambodia they visited the villages of Bossalla and Kroa Boa to see how they have progressed since our last visit. To suggest that we were overwhelmed by how hard the villagers have worked and capitalised on our assistance and more importantly embraced Rithy Lay’s agricultural teachings would be an understatement. Families who were previously n a terrible state, relying on 18 months of emergency food assistance - @ $1,700 per month from World of Difference - are now extensively farming their land both agriculture and livestock with many earning enough money not only to feed themselves nutritious food, they have been able to purchase walking tractors (49 purchased @ $3,700 each), scooters (30 purchased @ $2,300 each) and build themselves new houses with the revenue from the sale of their produce at the market. Wells were 80% full with crystal clear clean drinking water. Based on the success of the villagers work, the local government has even installed a 2km-unsealed road so that the villagers can more easily get their produce

to market. Without a doubt this pilot project has been a huge success for our club - and the other clubs in the district who financially supported the project, World of Difference - Bronwyn & Mark Stephens - and especially Rithy Lay.

PP Barry Hickman brought us up-to-date with work on Sustainable Communities in Cambodia

Chairman Dale Hoy introduced himself last week as he was wearing two hats last week - that of President and Chairman.

He then announced apologies and welcomed Rotarians and guests especially last week’s main speaker DG Neville John and wife Rebecca. He also welcomed Members’ partners Hatice Basarin and Maureen Hoy. He also welcomed visiting Rotarians Mark Stephens, Bronwyn Stephens, Josephine Saunders and AG Beachside Adrian Ranson.

Dale said we had an interesting if not controversial speaker Dr. Mervyn Jacobson the previous week and that he didn’t want to say too much about his talk except that he was a scientist, inventor, entrepreneur and artist.

Dale then said apart the key presentation from DG Neville John’s we were to have a presentation last week from PP Barry Hickman on his and Erik Vandenberg’s recent trip to Cambodia. Dale introduced Barry and a short write up of his presentation is on page 3

Alex Spear: Alex spoke about the problem that we have attaching the ladies badges to the badge board as they don’t have clips and he thought he had come up with a solution. He showed us a prototype which he had made from a piece of jam tin bent over and he was looking for a Member who knows a tinsmith to produce about 12 for him.PP Ivan Vojlay:Ivan said he received a message from Telstra recently related to shares and it asked if he wanted to sell them, buy them or make an offer and he had no idea what to do. Ivan asked other Members and they didn’t know either. So he spoke to resident stockbroker Wayne Sanderson and he introduced him to explain it all....Wayne Sanderson: Wayne said that anyone who was a Telstra shareholder would have received the pack that Ivan mentioned and this was part of the Telstra buy back timed for 30 September. Telstra is buying back $1.25B worth of equity but that was only 2% of the total shares on issue so they are going to he inundated by people trying to do it to get the franking credits. He says there will definitely be scale backs. Wayne said the options were to ignore it as you don’t have to do it or secondly tender all of your shares or thirdly you can tender part of your shares and on the tending you can either take pick various prices which is a discount to the market price that if you are happy to take a price between 6% and the maximum of 14%. Wayne said as it is to be scaled back he recommends we tick the box for the final price. If you have less than 880 shares then you have to tender the lot or none. Who should do it? - only those who are on zero tax rate in super mode or 15% tax rate.John Basarin: John spoke to the us about his return to the club. He said he previously left the club due to commitments that didn’t fit in with our Thursday meeting. He joined RC of Hampton and was President there. He said found it a small club so he returned. He looks forward to renewing old acquaintances.

Tony filling in for Secretary PP Tom Buxton who was away in Europe introduced the segment:

Polio UpdateIf the centennial isn’t exciting enough, we are looking ahead at a year that potentially sees the last case of polio. It has been over 30 years since Rotary officially initiated the campaign to eradicate polio and now we are closer than ever to achieving this. Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries remaining with the wild poliovirus and they are giving it everything they have, with all the help we can give to make this the year that polio finally falls. Three more years of vaccinations are required before world is officially recognised as polio-free, so our ongoing support is still needed.

District Conference The District Conference in 2017 will be in Shepparton, from 30 March to 1 April 2017. The conference theme - ‘Connecting Communities – Serving Humanity.’

Humanity is a quality we owe to each other. It embodies the idea of connection, of being part of a cohesive community that works towards the well-being of all its members and creates a sense of belonging, promoting trust, and offering equal opportunity to participate. The conference speakers will address matters of social inclusion and cohesion and look into how our communities are leading change through innovation and action; we’ll hear our future generation’s thoughts about building social capital, and explore how Rotary can play a part in maintaining and improving the open, cohesive society that we have worked so hard to build. The conference is for everyone, so bring your families and friends to hear how Rotary is working to help make our communities and the world a better place.

The Opportunities ahead• It was one person that had the idea of creating Rotary• One person that had the idea of creating The Rotary Foundation• One person who had the idea of eradicating polio• One person who founded Australian Rotary Health

Every Rotary project anywhere in the world started with one person who had an idea - and they developed and grew it by using the powerful network of Rotary to really make a difference.

Rotary is in the business of making a difference; of saving and improving the lives of those who didn’t get our opportunities; of restoring pride and dignity. We realise the difference a little of our time can make, what our skills can bring, sharing our talents, our knowledge and our experience with others, as we continue to change lives and our communities for the better, and together we will leave a polio free world to our children and grandchildren.

The future is bright, with a membership that is talented and diverse, with clubs now more willing than ever to do what it takes to achieve the most they can without compromising what makes us who we are - a values and vocationally based organisation.

I look forward to working with you in support of your objectives and wish you a successful year ahead of ‘Rotary Serving Humanity’.

IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

Ivan’s Hackers group welcomed Arthur Hubbard back from an overseas holiday and Arthur immediately produced short game form with his win at the Pre-Game Putting and Nearest-The-Pin on the course proper.

James Tisdall’s consistent Long Drives on the 7th and 9th holes were highlights, which helped to propel James to best score Off-The-Stick with 43 shots, from Geoffrey Bloore in 2nd place with 46 shots with, Arthur Hubbard and Ivan Vojlay, both on 48 shots, sharing equal 3rd position.

For outstanding overall performance on the morning the Vojlay-Cole Trophy winner was Geoffrey Bloore whose Handicap score, 30 shots, was 1 shot ahead of Arthur’s 31 with James Tisdall in 3rd position with 33 shots. Geoffrey’s round included 2 pars and not once did he enter a bunker.

Coffee, biscuits and review time. The Vojlay-Cole Trophy nomination committee was put under considerable pressure, main nominees, Arthur Hubbard, James Tisdall and Geoffrey Bloore vying for recognition. Arthur Hubbard had performed admirably with his short game, Handicap and Off-The-Stick scores, but meaningful points were discounted because of his inconsistency with his short game, when driving over his “Pond”. Arthur did not disturb a duck on the “Pond”. In James Tisdall’s case, we discounted points and will explain why, after we explain why to James, in due course. Yes, we added points for Geoffrey Bloore’s Brazillian Shoes marketing plans when he had obviously prompted Ivan to expel the virtues of buying one shoe and hopefully that would convince a purchaser to buy another one. A clever ploy Geoffrey and one which placed you in the winner’s position and we wish you well with the sales. Yes, there was more drama afoot (sorry about that), when Ian Cole joined us for the review. Ian had injured a knee the previous day and was concerned about his entries and exits from his favourite bunkers and we look forward to his return next week. John Carroll, “NaN” Trophy winner (clear winner in fact), Richard Sarell and Ron Stark all played steady golf and we look forward to next week at Brighton Golf Club.

Strategic Planning& Marketing

I am pleased to report that we had a successful Charity Golf Day at Woodlands Golf Club on Friday 23 September. The marvellous weather was only equalled by the great condition of the course, coupled by the attentiveness of their staff and quality of their food.

Seventy players joined us on the day for Golf and others for dinner.

We had very good support from our sponsors who fielded their own teams and also donated gifts and items for our Auction and Raffle. These activities were both well supported and proved to be the main contributor to our financial success on the day.

President Dale Hoy welcomed our guests and spoke about the numbers of Charities that our Rotary Club have supported. This I am sure encouraged a greater donations to our Auction and raffle. We were also pleased to have our Assistant Governor Adrian Ranson attend and lend his support by playing on the day

The golf competition provided great interest and the team headed by The Bentleigh House of Golf were once again victorious.

Michael Roberts did a great job as our MC and again proved to be a master auctioneer.

In conclusion I thank the members of our Committee for their efforts in arranging our Sponsors and Gifts as well as our other Rotarians who turned up and assisted on the day. Most appreciated.

Sponsors were: Mercedes-Benz Brighton, Bentleigh House of Golf, Beacon Lighting, Waverley Volkswagen, Patties Foods, Four and Twenty, Tsimos Commercial Real Estate, Trident Computers, Kirkhope Aviation, Kieser Specialist Training, Quest Brighton, Ratho Farm and PSC Insurance Brokers. Thanks also to Avenue Press for printing of the raffle tickets.

A successful day enjoyed by all
