From tho figures presentecl in table 1, it appears, with respect to sex, that of the 7 states and tonitories in this group there is a forger proportion of males in 5, namely, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, and Illinois, and a forger proportion of females in 2, namely, District of Columbia ancl Georgia, as shown by table 6.

In the territory of Hawaii there is a very large excess of males over females in 1900, or GIL I per cent of males as agafost 30. 9 per cent of females. The males also constitute 5 7. 7 per cent of. the total population of Idaho and 52. 1 por cent of that of Florida, while in the District of Columbia and Georgia, in each of which there is a slight excess of females, the males constitute but 47. 4 and 49. 8

per cent, respectively, of the total population. rr1w proportion of foreign born in 1900 in each of the

7 states and territories under consideration is given in table 7.

'The foreign born element in 1900 constitutes very riearly three-fifths of the population of Hawaii, and comprises mainly Chinese and J ap:mcse. Of the remaining states and territories considered the largest proportions of foreign born are found in IWnois and Idaho, or about onefifth for the former and a little more than one-seventh for the latter. About one-thirteenth of the population of Delaware and of the District of Columbia, respectively, ancl a little more than one-twenty-second of that of Florida, is foreign born, but in Georgia this element does not represent much more than one-half of one per cent of the total population. In the consideration of the native and foreign born elements of the population in 1900, it should be borne in mind that at the present census Indians and other persons on Indian reservations are included in the statement of population, which was not the case, however, at preceding censuses. The inclusion of this element affects, in certain cases, the percentage of native and fo1·eign born, ancl this is particularly true of Idaho, where the Indian population, which is largely native born, constitutes between 2 ancl 3 per cent of tho total population in 1900.

The clist1·ibntion of the population according to the per~ centage of white and colored in each state and territory considered is shown in table 8.

Over 98 per cent of the population of Illinois in 1900,

and more than 95 per cent of that of Idaho, is white, while of the remaining states and territories, excltrnive of Hawaii, the white element eonstitntes considerably more than one-half of the population of Georgia allcl Florich, more than two-thirds of that of the District of Columl>b, and more than four-fifths of tha.t of Dehiware.

The colored element in 1900 constitutes a consideral1le proportion of the total popnfation of the DiHtrict of Columbia, Florida, and Georgia, ancl a somewhat less proportion of that of Delaware, comprising, in each cnso, mainly persons of negro descent.

There is a large colored element in Hawaii, made np of 25, 7G7 Chinese, 61, 111 Japanese, and 2.33 persons of negro descent, the entire colored element in 1900 constituting 56.6 per cent of the total population of the territory. The white element in Bawa.ii in 1900 includes, for census purposes, 37,G5G 1-fawaiians. or part Ifawaiians, 28,819 Caucasians, and 415 South Sea Islanders.

A final summary by percentages is presented in table 9, giving the proportion of the total population rcproscutod by each element of the white population in 1000.
