SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Helix Electric deliv-ered the Department of Veterans Affairs (SFVA) Medical Center to the Army Corps of Engineers in December 2013, nearly five months ahead of schedule. The project was completed early despite significant changes to the contract and consider-able challenges related to the unforeseen conditions of the existing facility.

Established in 1934, the SFVA Medi-cal Center has a long history of conducting cutting edge research, establishing innova-tive medical programs, and providing com-passionate care to Veterans. The hospital serves more than 400,000 veterans living in Northern California each year.

SFVA MEDICAL CENTER ELECTRICAL UPGRADE COMPLETED FIVE MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

6795 Flanders Drive San Diego, CA 92121

Because of its age, the facility re-quired a system-wide replacement of all major electrical equipment as well as the replacement of over 400 electrical panels in 26 of the 31 SFVA buildings. Helix Electric was selected by the Army Corps of Engineers, San Francisco District as the general contractor to perform the $20.1M electrical system upgrade. Extensive pre-planning and procedural coordination was required to perform the system upgrade while the SFVA hospital remained fully operational.

Our scope of work included an up-grade of the primary and secondary elec-trical systems, improving system reliability and safety, and upgrading the capacity of the existing electrical power system from 5kV to 12.47kV. Additionally, the scope required the replacement of 15kV incoming feeders, metal-clad switchgear, sectionalizing switches, substations, and the replacement of over 400 distribution panelboards, switchboards, and motor control centers.

Helix received an “Outstanding Overall Rating” on the Army Corp’s Performance Evaluation and was highly commended on the quality of our workmanship, safety and health program, and the effective manage-ment of the project.

SAN DIEGO, CA - Helix Electric employees kicked off the new year by helping to make a difference in the lives of those in need throughout San Diego County. Helix partnered with Associated General Contrac-tors (AGC) of San Diego to host “Operation: Keep San Diego Warm” which began on Monday, January 6th and concluded Friday, February 7th. The event was a huge success with over 500 used coats, jackets, and other warm clothing of all sizes being collected! The items were donated to St. Vincent de Paul Village, a partner of Father Joe’s Villages located on a 3.5 block campus in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. The Village is the largest residential homeless services provider in the city. The facility serves families with children, single women, and single men including chronically homeless individuals, veterans, and people living with addiction and/or mental illness. Donations will assist Village residents living without shelter and the means to stay warm during the winter season.
